Okay, so we just moved to Oak Cliff between Bishop Arts and Steven’s Golf Course back in June. We’ve made a simple routine booking a brunch reservation at a restaurant in the neighborhood, to get acquainted with what the new zip code has to offer. We’ve really been impressed with service and food at places like Encino, Written by the Seasons, and Paradiso.
So this week we lined up a reservation for 1:15 PM at Pillar. The menu looked promising, and Cam, our waiter, made a good first impression. The place was pretty empty considering most places have been packed when we visit, but we didn’t want to let others absence determine our opinion.
Well, after we ordered our food that was the
last we saw of Cam until he picked up our dishes and asked if there was anything else we would like? Well, had he delivered our food, or even checked on us while we tried to eat what they served, maybe he would have known so far we hadn’t liked anything, and we just wanted our check. I will say the coffee was good, and I did eat my entire plate-but honestly it was awful.
First, my partner ordered a fruit, yogurt, and granola parfait. Bland Bland Bland. I ordered the Pillar Breakfast Plate. You’re basic with sausage, bacon, a ricotta whipped pancake, and potatoes, and scrambled eggs.
When I ordered this I asked Cam to leave off the chocolate sauce for the pancake, and that the syrup and butter would be fine. He said it all comes on the side will you be okay with that, I
said sure.
Well, what he meant by all that comes on the
side was the chocolate sauce, the pancake the size of a tic tac toe “O” had no butter, had no syrup, just chocolate sauce that I said I didn’t want. The scrambled eggs, runny, wet, and I love scrambled eggs but with salt and pepper. There was none around and like I said we did not see Cam once we ordered. He never checked on us to see how everything was-not once- until he came to pick up the plates. They were not busy mind you. Maybe 5 tables and a bar with maybe 8 guest total. But I ate the cold, bland, wet, runny, eggs anyway. The bacon was basically beef jerky. Dry, brittle, and hard. The potatoes, cold, overdone. I like ketchup with my potatoes. Never got the chance to ask for any. But I ate them.
So when Cam did come back and took our plates we asked for the check. He drops the check off. No thank you, nothing just plopped the check
down. The manager picked it up and after running
the card thanked us. Passed Cam on our way out. No thank you, nothing. Just walked right by us.
Sorry, we will not be back to Pillar for any reason unless it closes and reopens as a new restaurant with better service and better food.
