"“When I was a kid growing up in Orlando, I haaaated Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, mostly because they denied the Shaq and Penny-led Orlando Magic a second-straight trip to the NBA Finals in 1995-96 season. But my feelings on MJ and Co. have softened over the years (in part because I’ve been dating a Chicago girl), and we’ve been loving The Last Dance, ESPN’s ultra in-depth series about the Bulls’ final championship run in ’97-98. It’s great, especially if you want to hear Michael Jordan swear, and even better with an order from Portillo’s. The Chicagoland staple only has two West Coast outposts, and the one in Buena Park is closest, but honestly, I’d probably drive to Arizona for a couple of their hot dogs, a large Italian Beef - dipped, obvs - and a slice of their incredible chocolate cake. (Yes, it has mayonnaise in it. No, that doesn’t matter). Also Jordan is better than LeBron. Don’t @ me.” - JM We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Oh my gosh, what an amazing sandwich that Italian beef was with the hot peppers the fries so crisp and fresh dipped into the cheese sauce that’s made with real cheese and don’t get me started on that chocolate cake shake how amazing the atmosphere is so cool there’s pictures and memorabilia everywhere You stand in line and you pay for your food. You wait to be called and you find a seat them indoor seating outdoor seating. They even have a drive-through if you have not been to this location you should definitely check it out. It has a very old diner kind of vibe to it. The staff were very nice and very helpful. The bathrooms were very clean and parking was very easy to find 10 out of 10. Totally recommend the food is absolutely delicious. The cake slice that we got for my daughter‘s birthday was still a little bit warm and so delicious. We shared a shake because it was just too much food for one person. We didn’t need to get the combo because in one order of fries with some cheese sauce, two sandwiches and a cake shake perfect for two people. They also have an app that you can join up and earn some points. Get some free french fries and a free cake slice for your birthday. This place is great. The shakes come with a whole slice of cake in the shake. Everything is made to order. The bread is super fresh. Can’t wait to come back and try the Chicago dog.

Google
The food was solid. I ordered the Italian beef with sweet peppers. Food came out pretty quickly. The interior design was cool, as it showed all the Chicago highlights. It really made me feel transported to the original location in Chicago. Pretty easy and convenient shopping plaza to enter, as it is next to the Walmart. There's plenty of parking and a drive thru too!

Google
The atmosphere is great and the food is delicious. There Italian beef sandwich, Chicago hot dogs and chili cheese fries are the reason I always come back. Don't forget to order the chocolate cake shake!

We ate at Portillo's today, and it was amazing! My husband really wanted a Chicago dog, and it was perfect. My son got chicken strips – huge portions, and he was stuffed. I had a simple beef sandwich with au jus for dipping; oh my gosh, it was delicious.

Google
LOVE. THIS. PLACE! I've had at least 4 different meals here and they were all amazing *note* You need to know hot to order what you like. They customize everything e.g. dry, dipped, soaked. I had their cheddar and beef croissant and added a polish dog to it and was in heaven (maybe could have had a little more cheese, but I'm not docking for that. Have yet to try, but have high expectations for the salads, but feel they are overpriced when you can get several options of fully loaded dogs for under $10. Although there are fewer options, i think the quality and taste is way better than Pinks.

Google
Overall, I felt really let down with my Hotdog. Not really at all like other Chicago dogs I've had. Visually, it was quite untidy - and it was cold on arrival and really soggy - you can see in my photo how one tomato slice is basically dissolving in moisture. Also, the Vienna was tough - it didn't have that soft, buttery "melt in the mouth" texture I associate with the brand - I found myself questioning if it was even a Vienna, and not just a generic, cheaper beef Frank. I love a good Chicago Dog - but despite having the right toppings, it felt "off", falling massively short of my expectations. On the plus side, lovely location, good vibes - just a sad dog experience, which given that this is clearly usually their specialty, defeats the purpose of the visit.

Google
My husband and I loved this place! My husband who loves Chicago dogs really loved their hotdogs! My daughter and I loved their chicken tenders and their strawberry shake and chocolate cake!👏👏👏 The atmosphere of the place is really cool too! It's an experience in of itself.

Google
You have to go here if you want an awesome Hot Dog or Italian Beef Sandwich. I guess you can just order it if you don't have one near you. This was my 1st time here and I loved it, the beef sandwich just melts in your mouth and has a ton of flavor that goes for the hot dog also. CHECK IT OUT YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Cindi C.

Yelp
CCS is always delicious. Chicken tenders were great. The gravy was greasy. Just a cup of grease to dip my sandwich in. Yuk! It wasn't just me 4 other people in our group had the same cup of grease instead of gravy.

Yelp
Wow! Thanks, Yelp friends Anton F, Shalini G, Steven W and Edward B for reviewing this fantastic little gem! Stopped in for a "snack" on the way to DLand. We were welcomed when we walked in and took a moment to visually absorb all the great kitsch and paraphernalia lining the walls. We by-passed the ordering monitors in favor of the friendly faces behind the counter, ready to help us with our order. Being a classic Chicago dog place, they of course had a Chicago Dog, but Hubs is a simple guy and requested a dog with just cheese and bacon. Presto! No problem! I went with a Greek Salad with grilled chicken, since they boasted about the freshness on the way in. Fries are de rigueur in our burger and dog book, so a side of those and - oh man, WHAT?!? A chocolate birthday cake shake??? Why YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU! Hubs was very pleased with his delicious dog, I was very pleased with my fresh and tasty salad and we both melted with happiness over our chocolate shakes. THE FRIES!!!! Ok, y'all, they deserve their own shout out to crinkles FRY-EYES!!!! And DO NOT SLEEP on the cheese sauce! Dang-O! Delicious!!! Lots of room for groups to spread out, but small tables too, for quiet conversations. Staff kept things tidy and moving right along. My one downer was we didn't get an order number with a "fun Portillo's call out." Not much you can do with the number 90, but we enjoyed hearing, '88, it's going to be great! Come get your order!' '91 you're about to have some fun! Your order is ready!' Want it on the go? They have a drive-thru! Seriously, as we walked back to the car I said, 'Well THIS would be dangerous to have in our neck of the woods!' Hubs agreed and then we both wondered allowed about how good their burgers must be. (sigh) You know a place is great when you walk away full, thinking about your next meal there. LOL So we look forward to our next venture to OC and will def include a a stop at Portillo's! Cheers! "CC"

Yelp
I've been coming to this Portillo's for a while now. Maybe not a frequent guest, but it always reminds me of my business trips to Chicago and the times I enjoyed Portillo's sandwiches there. This last trip I can say that the hotdog was exceptional good, or maybe I was just craving a good dog. The beef sandwich was tasty as well, but the dog was the best of the meal. Now the fries, weren't so impressive. They were just fries and kind of on the soggy side. Almost wish we asked for them extra fried. Overall this has always been a great place to share with friends. Enjoy!!

Bryan H.

Yelp
Can't believe I found this in Buena Park! I went to Chicago awhile ago and made it a point to try this place, only for it to be a neighborhood over! Italian beef sandwich: nice and meeting, a good juiciness for the meat, and strong meat to bread ratio! Chicken tenders and fries: nothing special to be honest, however the giardiniera was a pretty interesting flavor Hot dog: I don't have a valid opinion since I don't really like pickles or most of the ingredients on this hahah but just seemed like a hot dog Chocolate cake: rich and decadent, pretty good but something that needs to be shared otherwise you're gonna be diabetic When ordering you go to the counter and can pick it up when your order is ready! I like the interior a lot with the zany charismatic inside as well!

Michael-Anthony T.

Yelp
Finally had the pleasure of trying this glizzy all the people I know from Chicago talk about. I tried the classic hot dog and it was different. It had a lot of toppings, which is what I'm not used to when it comes to that wholesale warehouse business that sales them for $1.50. This hot dog is $4 more but it was pretty dang good. Definitely a go to for glizzy's. I don't know if it compares to the locations in Chicago, but I defiently thought it was worth the $5+.

Jolene M.

Yelp
Split the two hotdog meal with my husband. They allowed us to customize the hot dogs separately which was great. They have someone take your order and pay long before the menu board so give you a paper menu with no prices which wasn't ideal. A good Chicago style dog but perhaps a tad overpriced.

Jynelle Christine S.

Yelp
First time trying Portillo's and it did not disappoint! First of all there is plenty of seating inside and outside. There are two ways to order: on the kiosks or at the registers which definitely speeds things up considering how packed it gets. The service was also great, they are very organized with how they get the orders out! I got the #2 Combo which comes with two of their famous hot dogs and a side - so delicious!! Highly recommend!

James H.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the Portillo's in Chicago where I first had a taste of the awesome Italian beef sandwhiches. I was thrilled to see that they have a location in Buena Park. Ordering process was easy via the self kiosk. My favorite was the Maxwell charred polish dog and Italian beef combo with charred polish dog. I got it extra dipped and it was pretty soggy and fell apart when picking it up. Next time, I'll get the gravy on side. Prices are reasonable. A large drink, large fries, large Italian beef sandwhich, Maxwell charred polish dog and chili dog was $35ish. A lot of seating but when busy, can be hard to get a table. Huge parking lot and drive thru.

Maricel P.

Yelp
We finally made it out to Portillo's! After years and years of waiting the suspense is over! We dined in during lunch and if you've ever been here you know it's packed. Almost all the tables are taken, but the lines are not long at all and there's a drive-thru if you're not dining in. When you get inside if you're not sure what you want they have a self service station if you want to order on the little kiosk and see the menu. They have the menus posted up too, but sometimes at busy restaurants it's a bit overwhelming if you've never been there and there's a line behind you. The restaurant is clean, there's employees literally cleaning every station once customers leave. We ordered hotdogs, fries, onion rings and even the cheesesteak and the suspense was too hyped up. My expectations were so much greater. It's not horrible, the hotdogs were a hit, but the cheesesteak was not the flavorful. I would not go out of my way to come back but if I was ever in the area again I would give it another go. Parking is not bad at all. There's a huge parking lot so parking is not a problem at all. If you have not visited yet then I highly recommend you try it out for yourself. My only regret is that I didn't have room for dessert because the dessert looks amazing!

Yelp
A day at Knotts berry Farm capped off with a Chili day and a Chicago dog. Quick service, hot food, and a great atmosphere! What else could you ask for?

Brian L.

Yelp
Came here for a hotdog on my first visit and Italian beef with sweet and hot peppers on my second visit. Thought the hotdog was great. Italian beef was also great but it was crazy oily. Would definitely come back.

Tricia N.

Yelp
I love Portillo's! I honestly always come here for the chicken tendies, cheese fries and/or onion rings. I am obsessed. Their hotdogs and sandwiches are really good as well but I just really prefer their chicken tenders. Workers are nice and service is pretty fast in the drive thru. They also do not skimp out on the sauces like other restaurants with drive thrus, which I really appreciate! Highly recommend coming here for high quality fast food, it hits every time :)

Yelp
Portillo's is an American fast-casual restaurant chain based in Chicago. It specializes in hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches. I understand that this chain has 86 locations nationwide; the majority of which are located in the areas of Chicago and Northern Illinois. I also heard that the chain has a good reputation. Because of a project, over the course of a couple of months, I visited Buena Park regularly. I had several meals before writing this review. In my opinion, the best reason to visit is the Chicago dog. This is one of the few places where you can find a real Chicago dog--along with that intensely green relish. The hotdog casings have a nice snap when bitten into. For this reason, I would say that the chili cheese dogs with onion here are better okay. The Italian beef sandwich here is much like a French dip sandwich, with the addition of chilis (hot or sweet--your choice) for added flavor. The chocolate cake shake is supposedly a big thing. It is literally a slice of chocolate cake blended into a milk shake. But it's a bit too much for me, though. If I was to offer any insight, it would be this: A lot of fast-food restaurants have numbered meal combos. Here, I think they do it to facilitate faster order processing. I think a lot of us have been conditioned to believe that ordering a combo results in a small savings, versus ordering each item à la carte. But here, the combo price is the same as if you had ordered each item à la carte.

Catherine M.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Buena Park. The menu is very extensive and there's something for everyone. The ambience is fun and interesting. It really appeals to kids, the service I've had was always quick. I usually get the Italian beef and the hotdog; the hotdogs can't be beat. They're delicious. I also like to get a strawberry shortcake or a seasonal dessert. I'm really happy the Portillo's only 15 minutes from my house so I can go there frequently.

ash j.

Yelp
My first time having Portillo's and it was the best!! Italian beef with both sweet and hot peppers and I got the gravy on the side since I was eating it later. The meat was very tender and bread if soft. I'll definitely be going back to get that again and try other items.

Cameron K.

Yelp
I can't wait till' we get one of these in Houston! Best Hot Dogs I've found in a restaurant chain setting. The Chicago style Hot Dogs are the Bomb! We come to this location every time I travel for work to Los Angeles. Love the Chicago Dogs, the crinkly fries and even the Chocolate Cake is good. If you need a 'cheat-day' from you diet, this is the place for you!

David J.

Yelp
Had 20 beef sando's delivered to our ski vacation rental. Fantastic lunch for the family and friends. Great experience having them shipped to us while on our ski trip. Everyone loved it!!

Yelp
Few food experiences have made me more happy than when a friend of mine in California surprised me with an unanticipated visit to the recently opened Portillo's in Buena Park just south of Los Angeles, where I had been living for the past 25 years - totally without any Chicago style Italian Beef sandwiches or Hot Dogs. And then suddenly there it was - Portillo's. How happy that made me, as a hungry Chicagoan in exile. "Portillo's" is "Portillo's" is "Portillo's" is "Portillo's". And in the case of "Portillo's" in Buena Park, that is an excellent thing. "Portillo's" is Not Fast Food, but it is pretty close to it, being essentially a high quality Chicago style 'Street-Food' eatery developed from it's origins as a popular corner Hot Dog & Crinkle-Fries stand called "The Dog House". And even though I was just a kid at the time, I ate there more than once, and it served a darn good Chicago Dog. When one eats at a familiar fast-food place, like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Subway, or Kentucky Fried Chicken, one expects a meal that has IDENTICAL food found in every other branch of that restaurant as one will find in any other country in the world. If you get a Big Mac in Tokyo, you don't want your Big Mac to be Raw, or to have Fish Sauce on it. The same thing applies to every branch of "Portillo's". When you order an Italian Beef Sandwich dipped in Juice, you expect the same thin sliced beef, the same soft yet slightly crisp Sweet Peppers, the same Beef-Juice dip, and definitely the same chewy Italian Bread. If ONE THING is different, then it's NOT THE SAME SANDWICH: it's NOT PORTILLO'S anymore. If you love Portillo's, and you decide to grab an Italian Beef at the branch in Buena Park, I promise - You Won't be Disappointed.

Yelp
Went past 10am. The place is like an old diner. Very family feel. They have indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the counter then wait for your number to be called. Pretty good as they don't ask you a tip on the registrar. They also have a drive thru but that one is cashless. For cash payments, you gotta go inside. In anycase, food was pretty fast. We had the hotdog, beef , fish sandwich, and the choco cake. Drinks are refillable by going to the pick up counter and asking a staff to do it. The hotdog isn't as big as other places so you might want to order 2. That's why they have a meal combo with 2 dogs. It's topped with a number of veggies. The beef sandwich was kinda mid. It was served with a choice of side peppers either hot or sweet or both. the fish sandwich was surprisingly good. way better than other places. it had real fish meat. i would have to say that yes the choco cake ks bomb. Not too sweet and yet moist. I love it. Ambiance though, was pretty good. You can get your own ketchup, etc on a counter. Sadly, their toilet wasn't that good. It smelled like pardon the french ... urine all over. And this is just when they opened for the day. Paid around almost $50 dollars and it was a little too much for what it is. I did like the experience i guess for the most part. Shoutout to the cashier though, as she was friendly and gave good suggestions. I might drop by for a to go order, if i'm in the area but would probably just go for a dog and a choco cake... most likely skipping the rest.

Arie R.

Yelp
Chocolate cake - tasted weird this time. It's usually moist but it was dry. Not as dry as the caramel spice cake but still dry and not enjoyable. I've had this countless times and this tome of tasted minty, even though they dont add mint. Taste dry and off. Caramel spiced cake - dry and salty. No good. Would not recommend or get again.

Kev D.

Yelp
I went to the drive thru, Mark your days portillos. Asked for a large and received nothing but half an order. I know about the cheating a customer on sizes but man this is beyond obvious when I even splurged for a large cause it was going to be shared between 2 individuals I was giving it to as a snack once home. I was down the street at knotts and was like man been a minute lemme grab a meal otw home. Sandwich I also got was pretty weak as I was big backing eating and driving. Meat in the sammy was pathetic. Crazy spending $30 on a meal that's very poor on quantity when the quality and quantity was very good prior the past 2 decades. Guess times change and this is portillos stingy and cheap era. I definitely won't be back here for a long while as the disappointment is real

Dari P.

Yelp
On June 14, we went to Taste of the Town in Fullerton. Portillo's was there giving out sandwiches and plastic cards like the ones your credit card is made from. The cards said free sandwich at the restaurant. Each card had a unique code. No expiration date. We went tonight just TWO months later. Well guess what? The cards don't work. We stayed anyway and we each ordered a beef sandwich, soda, and onion rings and fries to share. The sandwich was loaded with salty unflavored meat. Bun was soggy too. Left most of it over. And we had to pay for it. Fries and onion rings were crispy and good. No reason to come back again.

Alex J.

Yelp
"Hi this is my first time, I was thinking of a Chicago dog but would you recommend anything else?" Cashier: "You should get the Italian beef, it's delicious!" Great let's go with that! Are the fries good too? Cashier: "They're amazing!" TL:DR - if Portillo's is really the representation of Chicago food in California, then this is a pretty embarrassing option to have. I didn't finish either sandwich or fries because they were that bad. They went in the trash. I ordered the sandwich "wet". But somehow the only thing that was "wet" was the soggy bread that was falling apart as I lifted the sandwich. The beef was dry dry dry. And extremely bland. The peppers were crunchy but not very sweet or spicy, they were just bitter. And the grilled onions were way undercooked. The fries were not cooked enough either, they were hard as if just thawed from the freezer. No crunch or crispiness at all. While the interior was just soggy. This place aint it.

Lani H.

Yelp
It's fricken' Portillo's and it's here in California!!! If you want a Chicago dog or an Italian beef sandwich, you can't go wrong here! They know what they're doing here and I've never had a problem for all the times I've visited. Chicago dog 10/10 Italian beef 10/10 Cheese fries 10/10 Chocolate cake shake 10/10 Location is convenient. It's close to Knott's Berry Farm, lots of parking, they have a drive thru (card only), and lots of indoor seating. This location has been under construction for a while. Something new is that they have an electronic kiosk to order food, as well as cashiers. Staff is always friendly and really good at getting my order down. I live in Los Angeles, so I need a lot of items separated to not get soggy food and they nail the packaging! Extra dip is in cups that haven't spilled in the times I've ordered and they're wrapped in plastic bags in case. Bags have nice weight distribution, so you don't have to worry about your food flying or tipping while you're driving. This location is just a cool vibe. The location has a lot of decoration to look at. People always seems chill, talking, having a good time. Like I said, if you want some Chicago style food, this location nails it!

Noly G.

Yelp
Love the food at this restaurant! It is always fresh and hot. The cut back on the staff is noticeable. However, I am still able to order and get my food in a timely manner. The restaurant is very clean. I wish they could fix the wind tunnel that is created whenever the front door is opened. It is hard to find a table that is not affected by this. It makes your napkins fly away and it lets cold air come whooshing in.

Bryan C.

Yelp
An iconic institution on the outskirts of the OC in Buena Park, I was duly impressed by the taste and comforting nature of the food here. I opted for the iconic hot dog and beef sandwich, and although it may not have the complexity of flavors as other sit-down meals, they both hit the spot! In terms of the ambience, the place appears quite cozy yet clean and efficient. An excellent first visit at this shop, I will surely be back.

Dang N.

Yelp
I was told by a Chicago native that this location opened up and it tastes just like its Chicago spots. I haven't had an Italian beef in a long time so went. Had the combo with everything and had it dipped with mozzarella cheese. It's ok. Nothing amazing. The meat isn't seasoned at all and the dip doesn't penetrate the center so it's pretty dry in the center with very little flavor. Wouldn't come back. 2.5 stars. Service was super friendly though.

Britney M.

Yelp
I love the convenience of the drive thru! Portillo's has pretty good food. And I like that you can hit the drive thru and still get the same quality of food. The service is good and quick. Ambiance is laid back. I enjoy the plant based options. I ordered a plant based hot dog, with bbq sauce. I skipped all the other fixings, just wasn't in the mood for those. The hotdog was great. And I also ordered some cheese fries, because why not? They were delicious too. And topped it all off with a sweet tea. Yum! That sweet tea was super sweet and I loved it.

Nicholas K.

Yelp
I asked for no green peppers. First thing I see on my food is green peppers. Stop rushing when there's two customers?

Erin T.

Yelp
YUM YUM YUM! First time at Portillo's and was impressed! I got the bacon cheeseburger, and added grilled onions. The meat patty had a lot of flavor and the burger overall was well seasoned. I also got a fries with the cheese sauce. So delicious & such generous portions! The line to order & the wait for food was around 20 mins. It was worth the wait! Definitely recommend.

Megan G.

Yelp
Chicago style hot dogs and beef dip sandwiches, we had dinner here after visiting Knotts Berry Farm. Large restaurant decorated in 1930's adverts and antiques, the food is a good value.

Pedro A.

Yelp
Italian beef, Chicago style. End review here. Lol. So good! Gotta get it dipped in the broth add giardiniera and boom. The hot dogs are solid as well. Fries with a side of chili. Mouth drooling right now.

Tracy F.

Yelp
Are you ready for an Amazon beef dip sandwich? This place rocks! Been coming for years. Even saw Jay Leno here devouring a Chicago beef sandwich Get the regular with spicy peppers. The large has a sausage included and not the same. Side of fries with cheese sauce is tasty! Cold beer served in iced cold frosty glasses. Alcohol line is separate so order your non alcoholic beverages with your meal. Their chopped salad is delicious too! We prefer the patio dining but the have indoor seating AND a drive thru option. We come here at least once a year.

Ken C.

Yelp
If I'm craving a Chicago style hot dog or italian beef sandwich, then this is our regular stop for both. Since 2013, I have been coming here regularly for both items. A lot of modern hot dog places in California try to get too fancy. Hot dogs aren't fancy - what's the saying about lipstick on a pig? I like fancy, but sometimes I just want a hot dog to be well made with classic ingredients. You also have to have a sausage casing that snaps. It does that here. In 2013, when I wrote my original review, I felt that the offering was not as good as Chicago. Is it? Maybe - maybe not; however, it definitely fulfills the craving and I'm good with that!

Amaka O.

Yelp
Literally in the drive thru line and I'm so pissed! It's 2025, for God's sake. Why do people have to be rude and treat you poorly because you're black and they're white! Why? Why? I just popped up to get some food, really looking forward to the hotdogs and the order taker, white guy, was so rude to me. BuT the car before me, he was so pleasant to them, because, you guessed it, they were white. I'm so angry, hurt and so disappointed. This took place at after 830 pm tonight, January 1st. To the managers of this establishment, if this is the sort of person you employ, shame on you and your organization.

Tiffany N.

Yelp
I think I've had this place bookmarked for over 10 years. I just don't know why I didn't go but I'm glad I was finally able to go with my family & friends. We met here for a late lunch & wow, so good! You basically order your food then go find a seat. There's tables inside & a huge section outside. The line goes by pretty quick. I got the #1 with a side of cheese sauce & a chocolate cake. My husband got the #1 as well but with hot peppers & my toddler got the chicago dog. Which I tried & wow, so good. The cheese sauce really pulled everything together for me. I think I could drink that sauce lol. The cake? Absolutely amazing. Reminds me of Matilda lol. Only downfall is that I wish they had Dr Pepper lol it would've really put the whole meal at a 10 for me

Kathy T.

Yelp
This is the closest Portillo's from San Diego, in Buena Park. The inside of this location pretty much replicates that of the Chicago environs and all their many locations, with a few changes. This one in Buena Park has a large California-style outdoor space or you also may dine-in. At Portillo's your selections are varied and vast. You have the famous Chicago Hot Dog, Chili Dog, Italian Beef, Chicken Sandwich and Fingers, Maxwell Street Polish Sausage Sandwich, Cheeseburger and Delicious French Fries. They also have added several Bowls. If it's Salads you're into, there are Greek Salads, Caesar Salads, and their famous Chopped Salad, among others. One of the things I always recommend is the Chocolate Cake. It's recipe contains mayonnaise, whose recipe is in honor of the 70's cakes my Mom used to make. The mayonnaise makes the cake moist. Also on the line up are Shakes, and one of the ones you must try is the Chocolate Cake Shake. They literally put a piece of cake in that shake, which makes it extra decadent and delicious! This is a Chicago thing, and if you grew up there like I did, you have to revisit at least once a year. By that, I mean that I usually order a box of Italian Beefs shipped to me for my birthday. Okay, also at Christmas time. You get a box containing ingredients for 8 sandwiches, including cryo-wrapped beef, the delicious bread, the gravy, the sweet peppers, and a jar of the hot peppers [Giardiniera]. Your box of 8 sandwiches comes to you completely safe in a box lined with styrofoam with ice blocks to keep it frozen until it arrives at your doorstep. And each box contains complete instructions to make the beefs in a fun and exciting experience. Hope you try this sometime! Go to: portillos.com to see what they offer. Don't be late!

Yelp
My bf is from Chicago and always told me about this place. Finally, we were in the area coming home from San Diego over the weekend and decided to grab dinner here! This was definitely not what I expected. He mentioned hot dogs and I thought of a tiny little hole in the wall or something but apparently it's a popular chain in Chicago! Wish they had more locations, especially up in the valley because this place was hittin the spot real good! Huge parking lot so that is a plus. They have a drive through which was actually very surprising considering how big this restaurant actually is. The line was a bit long but we hopped in. The decor of this place screamed classic Chicago which was really cool. I went for a classic Chicago style hot dog with everything on it. Might as well go for the full experience, right? We also got some crinkle fries on the side and 2 chocolate cake slices because they're known for it. We luckily found a table to seat for two considering how busy it was at this time (but maybe even all the time). Food came out super quick and it was absolutely delicious!! I wasn't sure about the tomatoes since I don't like tomatoes in general but it went well with everything. The peppers were a very nice touch and the pickle slice made it even better. Not my usual go to in terms of hot dog toppings and the missing ketchup was a little weird but it all worked out. I was worried about the crinkle cut fries but they salted it perfectly and it was super crispy and not gross at all! The slice of chocolate cake definitely is a must for dessert. Great spot and hope they open more out in the valley!! IG: @ammysalamii

Yelp
I've been watching a lot of The Bear, so it was only natural to seek out hot beef sandwiches and Chicago dogs. I came in around 8:00 on a Friday night and it wasn't terribly busy. My friend and I shared all the crowd favorites: -Chicago hotdog ($4.29): mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, kosher pickle, and sport peppers on a poppy seed bun -Italian beef sandwich ($7.89): thinly sliced homemade Italian beef on French bread with sweet peppers and hot giardiniera peppers -cheese fries ($4.19 for a large) + cheese sauce ($1.29 for a regular) -onion rings ($5.29 for a large) The Chicago dog was delicious - I loved the combination of the mustard, neon green relish, freshly chopped onions along with the sliced tomatoes and kosher pickle. For hotdog purists, the Chicago dog is most certainly not the dog for you. There's a while lot going on, however it makes perfect sense when you're eating it. If you order one thing, make it the Chicago dog. While I did love the hotdog, I didn't find the Italian beef to be that interesting. It just lacked any flavor despite the addition of the sweet peppers and giardiniera peppers. It was beefy and very plain. And even though we ordered the sandwich "dipped" (where the bread is dipped into the gravy) it still managed to taste dry. Portillo's is a good time for anyone looking to have a Chicago hotdog + Italian beef sandwich.

Yelp
Portillo's has been a great comfort food spot in Buena Park for years and a local favorite. I'm a fan of many menu items, from the burgers and sandwiches to the dogs. I mainly order through the drive-thru, but dining in occasionally is a treat with a relaxed, nostalgic vibe, fun decor, and clean space. There are indoor and covered patio seating areas. A few of my recent food orders were delicious and comforting: the "Famous" Italian Beef Sandwich, Double Cheeseburger, Chili Cheese Hot Dog, and Fish Sandwich. Don't forget the classic fries and onion rings. I only ordered a few sweets over the years, but from what family and friends remind me, the shakes, malts, and desserts are great sweet-tooth options. Cashless Drive-thru only. If you are paying with cash, you'll have to order inside. There is plenty of parking in the lot shared with Walmart. I've had good service for many years, and the food is on point. The staff is usually kind and prepares orders with care and speed.

Yelp
Great food! Service was fast and friendly. This place can get busy and the food is pretty good so often times there is barely standing room waiting for your order. There is seating inside and adequate parking as it is near the mall parking lot. We will be back for sure. Hot dogs are great. Bowls are great. Salads are excellent! I wish we had one of these closer to home.

Yelp
We haven't been to Chicago "yet" and I've heard some amazing things about Portillo's. Always wanted to try an authentic Dog with the neon green relish, poppy seed buns and to "run it through the garden". Plus of course the Italian Beef and the cake shakes! Lucky for us we were gonna stay in Buena Park and I made sure to ask to eat here while in town! Unfortunately I wasn't able to come down personally due to our hotel parking situation, so I can't comment on ambiance, but I'm sure it's awesome! So we got our food delivered. Unfortunately delivery isn't the way to go. Food was kind of cold, especially the fries and the cheese sauce. But it didn't stop us from enjoying the greatness that is Portillo's! The Italian Beef absolutely delivered! Made my wife say "next time, I want my own!" Proud moment for the both of us! The meat was tender, juicy and delicious! I had my sandwich dipped and some gravy on the side. It was fantastic! So much flavor! Just needed more hot and sweet peppers. The bread held up so well until the very last bite at the end. A little mushy from all the gravy, but still so good! Chicago dog was awesome! Definitely marking that off the bucket list! The peppers were nice and hot, the neon green relish did not disappoint! Dog had a nice snap with little resistance, it was a very good hot dog! I'm not really a hot dog person to be honest, but this, I would absolutely get again! Chili Dog was also very good! My wife preferred this over the Chicago dog. I personally preferred the Chicago, so now we know who gets to keep what to themselves lol. Fries were good but could've been "great!" Asked for well done and glad I did, they had such great crunch! Especially dipped in the cheese sauce! Only thing was they were cold. So that was very unfortunate. But will not skip on them. Onion rings were also very good! Nice crispiness, great flavor! Both shouldn't be passed on. Cake Shakes were good. Definitely not something I would get all the time. I would rather get a nice big piece of cake or a full cake than another cake shake. I got the Strawberry Lemon Cake Shake and my wife got the Chocolate Cake Shake. Mine was good, but i preferred the chocolate. I loved the strawberry flavor and would definitely get a strawberry shake! The lemon flavor was ok, but not my favorite. The chocolate was good! But probably better separate. All the cake is stuck at the bottom of the shakes. So you're getting more soggy cake towards the bottom than ice cream. Cheese sauce was awesome! Best idea for a side sauce and you can put it on anything! Especially if you need more cheese for your chili cheese dog lol. Overall we were both very pleased and excited to eat here! A place you should not miss! Anytime you're in Buena Park or anywhere that has a Portillo's, make it a mission to stop here and have a great meal!

Yelp
I went home thinking about this damn sandwich. It was just the best sandwich experience I had since Phileppe The Original. Italian beef sandwich - I got it with mozzarella cheese, and both sweet peppers and hot peppers. I would recommend this combination to everyone. I still smile when I think about the experience of eating this thing. Chicago-style hot dog was also amazing. Loaded with fresh tomatoes, kosher pickle, sport peppers, mustard, relish, celery salt, chopped onions on a poppy seed bun. Very authentic. Less than 5 bucks. Can't wait to come back and try the chocolate cake!

Yelp
No waiting on a Wednesday night! Ordered quickly by a man in a neck brace...DUDE! You shouldn't be working period! Kinda think this would be a liability issue w/Portillos! Being outside and taking orders it's a big risk, especially if you're injured so I have no idea what was going on with that and that was really not a good look for Portillo's. He could easily get hurt when he's already injured visibly. Other than that, he efficiently took my order. I swung around waited less than seven minutes and my order was ready. I was asked if I needed anything else and I said yes cuppa iced water would be wonderful and they were glad to provide it. No charge.

Yelp
Came across Portillo's Hot Dogs while working on a project close by. While this place was super busy during lunchtime my food was served within reasonable time! Overall the food was good but not great! Perhaps I should have tried their hot dog instead? I will definitely give them another try in the future!! Enjoy and Bon Appétit!

Yelp
So I'm new to this area. I stick to my Long Beach ground for EVERYTHING. I've always seen lines here and figured it was good or ok. Let me correct my self. This place is awesome. I've been coming back and back again either for fries , a burger a dog, oorrr,,, the famous chocolate cake that's a must have. A local comedian stated that they have a killer chocolate cake shake, I had to try and OMG must have. No lie, I actually found a burger here in the area. They have an awesome double bacon cheese burger that's on point every time. Thank you for the awesomeness and the employees you have that always have a smile. See you guys later this week for a slice of cake and a burger

Yelp
Lots of people rave about this place so I thought I would give it a try. Got food to go, so already I prepare myself that it's not going to look or taste as good as if I had eaten there. The chili cheese dog, it's okay but nothing to rave about. I don't like beans in my chili. The chopped salad, I only ate about 1/3, it was okay too but not awesome that I would want to order it again. Was expecting more for the price I paid.

Yelp
We went to a sandwich drive-thru, and while the chicken was crunchy and crispy, the steak sandwich was drenched in oil and way too spicy, making it difficult to eat. The fries had no salt and were completely flavorless. Although we enjoyed the chicken, the rest of the meal was terrible, which was disappointing considering the great reviews that led us there.
