8 Restaurants and Bars in Montreal With Cozy Fireplaces | Eater Montreal

"Everything is modern and sleek — from the decor to the plating of the food —at this BYOB option in Hochelaga Maisonneuve, where the menu is traditional French speckled with Quebecois flair (think a poutine with pulled pork and mustard cream). The floor-to-ceiling windows keep it bright, while the fireplace adds some warmth and ambience." - Erinn Blicher

The Best Restaurants in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve | Eater Montreal

"L’État Major undoubtedly favours classic French styles and flavours (lobster bisque, the Alpine casserole tartiflette, foie gras), but isn’t afraid to take a risk or two. Take, for example, its interpretation of poutine, made with pulled pork, mustard cream, and pommes dauphines (potato puffs). Open for close to a decade, it’s a quintessential Hochelaga BYOB." - Valerie Silva

The Best Montreal BYOB Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"BYOW impresario Dominic Laflamme (Le Quartier Général) is the co-owner of this busy Hochelaga bistro. État-Major nails the genre’s must-haves: Minimalist décor, open kitchen and a simple blackboard menu that accents crowd-pleaser proteins — like scallops, oysters, Gaspor pork, cerf de Boileau, lamb, and Stanstead rabbit." - Holly Tousignant

The Best Food Events and Deals at Montréal en Lumière 2020 | Eater Montreal

"Ariane Le Gal, known for her work with woodsy produce supplier Gourmet Sauvage will be at this Hochelaga BYOB for a special “forest to table” meal centred aroundQuebec’s boreal forests (so, expect berries and wild mushrooms). It’s $59 and goes down on the evenings of February 26 and 27. Alternatively, a three-course lunch service focused on similar boreal flavours (but without Le Gal) is on offer for a bargain $25, on February 20-21 and 24-28." - Tim Forster

Google
A BYOW in HoMa, this eatery was casual, noisy and simple, reflected in the unpretentious tables and chairs. It felt more like a neighbourhood diner than a fine-dining establishment. The appetizers, the boudin noire and the foie gras were excellent. Then, we experienced a significant delay, waiting over an hour for our main courses. My wife chose the tuna steak, while I opted for the lapin farci. The food was good, but it didn't have much character, lacking the depth and complexity of flavors we were hoping for. The waitress informed us that desserts would be complimentary to compensate for the delay. However, I later noticed that only one dessert was deducted from the bill.

Google
Casual BYOB French style restaurant. The menu changed from time to time but we can always find a dish we liked. For appetizers, the focaccia with goat cheese was delicious, boudin noir was smooth and flavourful! We had Arctic Char and steak as our main course, both were perfectly cooked and delicious! The crème brûlée and Pavlova were also amazing! Servers are friendly and helpful! We will definitely be back soon!

Google
An altogether beautiful meal with friends. We all chose different mains: chicken, trout, cod and venison all unique flavour combinations worked deliciously. Fabulous food. Service was friendly but uneven. Room for improvement. But definitely worth the trip to Hochelaga!

One of the best meals I've had in a restaurant. The steak was perfectly cooked to my liking and the sauce and mushrooms accompanying it were exquisite. I will definitely come back with friends.

Bring your own wine restaurant. French style. Changes menu fully every month or so. Update after a few months, they are getting much better with the menu items. This is our favorite restaurant for this summer so far...

Google
Delightful evening. Excellent, helpful service. Warm, comfortable atmosphere. Well presented French cuisine. I was also impressed with their timing: short waits between courses. Will definitely return and bring a group of good friends to toast with.

Exploring the city for new discovery, this place is a must go. Very impressed by the touch of plates. Every plate is special, has its own fragrance. The menu is on a board on the wall, very simple menu. They change their menus every once in a while, i must say, im tempted to go back !

Came to eat year with my parents, while they were visiting me in the city. We loved the food, the atmosphere. Had a very lovely time, so happy we found this place :). Will definitely be going back.

Yelp
If you like Quartier General, you will like this one as it's the same owner. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, great food, good service and it's a BYOW! Had a group reservation at 6 for a birthday and they said we had to leave at 9 which was very reasonable considering that most places will only give you 2 hours. All the dishes we had were very well executed in terms of presentation and flavour. The menu was very diversified and the chef was able to accommodate my friend who's a vegetarian. Took the short rib as an entree and it was fall off the bone tender! As a main, I had the piglet which was very moist and flavourful...no intense flavour there but well balanced with the vegetables which accompanied the dish. Friends also took the fish and duck magret also said that their dish were yummy. The dessert was the best part, homemade donut with ice cream and caramel sauce. The donut was fluffy and crispy. The caramel sauce wasn't too sweet and the ice cream was refreshing. Definitely recommend it. The table d'hôte was about $40...a bargain considering that I went to Europea the day before and didn't even come close to the excellent meal I had at Etat Major. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Great little restaurant on Ontario st. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Byow adds to their attraction. Most dishes were good. The duck magrais was hard and chewy. The octopus was very good. I loved the dessert. A nice french bistro with friendly service.

Yelp
Restaurant food very good to excellent. Don't go for 8:45 seating unless you bring a warm sweater of fleece. 6 PM seating you'll be ok. Waitress mentioned heating is reduced at night after 10 pm when asked why is it cold. Otherwise beef tartar, pork shoulder and chocolate desert were all very good choices.

Yelp
Victor/Eric should reconsider to learn how to offer basic restaurant hospitality when it comes to larger groups. There seems to be a lack of professionalism in the way he treats customers by the way they look. We reserved as a group of 8 but ended up being a group of 12 (multi-cultural). At first it was a good service but once our friends came to join our table, we started to notice stares and judgmental grimaces from our waiter facial expressions. We were all in our 30's and in the working class, some of us were tattoo artists, some were in the IT field and etc. Once our food came, our waiter never once even came to ask us if we wanted pepper, more bread, salt or anything at all. No follow-ups at all, we had to flag him down every time. Maybe you can say they were busy but the restaurant wasn't full. In addition, we had 2 people who were allergic to dairy products and we asked if they could accommodate us. He said No. At this point, we were already disappointed but we still gave him benefit of the doubt so we asked if the restaurant can do something special for our friend's birthday. He also replied with No. We have been to multiple restaurants in the past and "No"seems to be the first response that Victor had in mind from all of our conversations. (There were several ways to decline a request politely but his response were mainly cold Nos). Overall, if you're looking to celebrate a special occasion, I would recommend to celebrate elsewhere. I wanted to give our waiter some personal feedback in person but we were truly too disappointed to all the declines. Please learn how to create a great experience for your customers and more people will come back. If you continue to lack professionalism in this industry, it might be best if you retired from it.

Yelp
Best part of this restaurant is that it's BYOW! We weren't satisfied with the service. Our waitress seemed blaze and uninterested, borderline bored. Food wasn't great either. Duck was overcooked. The squash in the deer plate was undercooked & therefore difficult to eat. Desserts were small especially the mousse which was a few squirts. Last comment, although it's not under the control of the restaurant is the lack of parking around, especially in winter. It took us a good 20mins to find parking. Generally speaking, there are better restaurants in the neighbourhood.

Yelp
I ended up here on a spur of the moment decision and was not disappointed. It's an excellent little hip French restaurant in an area I didn't expect to find one. Our meals were beautifully presented and delicious. The waitress was outstanding and very knowledgeable about the menu listing from memory what seemed like endless detailed choices. It mirrors what I've seen and experienced in Paris. Dessert was outstanding as well. All in all I'd highly recommend it

Yelp
BYOB. Overwhelmingly great service with underwhelming food. Ordered the braised beef and beef tartar as entrées and lamb as main course. The braised beef was very tender served on a bed of cucumbers very salty capers and black olives and over cooked greens. The combination just didn't work. The beef tartar was tasteless and drenched in mayo. Both were passes. Main course polenta bed was great and lamb was grey and very tough and lacked seasoning. The great service doesn't merit the poor food. Kudos to our wait staff and shame on the chefs. Will not return.

Yelp
Amazing food and wonderful service...server was very patient and explained the menu to us in English given our poor French. Food was impeccable and very fresh ingredients. I loved the BYOW option!

Yelp
Great bring your own wine in mtl for a reasonable price. Service was a little bit slow,so that was annoying. Food was pretty good too, i would recommend taking the table d'hote for 14 more dollars.

Yelp
I was stunned to find such a great restaurant so far from the "standard" dining areas. The ambiance was charming, the food was tasty (and perfectly suited for fall) and the service was exceptional. Portions are full plates, but the quality is at a much higher standard than you'd expect for something so reasonably priced. I got the magret de canard, which my phone keeps insisting is "magnet" de canard. But frankly, if there were magnets in the dish, I'd tell the chef to keep doing what he's doing. Oh, and all main courses come with a soup or salad. Great spot. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to eat lunch in pouring rain. Found this place packed. They close at 2:30pm and we went in at 2pm. Food is very good. No wonder it was packed with locals into the closing time. The price is a little bit higher but not too expensive. The seafood salad is delicious. Steaks were cooked right. Spaghetti was well sauced. Simple french style food without pretentiousness.

Yelp
The service was excellent! The food was very good. The price is very good given then fact that it's a byob. A little bit on the noisy side but the atmosphere was great!! I would most definitely recommend this place to anyone and i will come back fir sure

Yelp
From the moment you pass the door, your nose will know you're in a great restaurant - whiffs coming from the kitchen will make you want to sit down and look at the menu as fast as you can. I went three times in the last month... The menu and the prices are different for lunch (and so is the chef, I've been told), but the quality and creativity are a constant. A few great seafood dishes on the menu, more than what you'd expect from a non-seafood restaurant, which is good! Meats and fish are cooked to perfection, everything is tasty, the service is friendly. A perfect balance between a classic approach to cuisine and a refreshing creativity.

Yelp
Lovely restaurant with wonderful service. It's BYOB, but there's an affordable little wine stop across the street. Parking was on-street and easy on a Wednesday night. Food was delicious, but portions were small. He was starving after his pork dish. I was just fine with mine (he is an eater).

Yelp
The resto just opened like a month ago. already a fan of their other BYOB (Quartier Général on the Plateau) food and prices are really amazing; 4 course meal for less than 40$ fantastic service, our waiter was very polite and very knowledgeable; explained all courses very well u pick a main dish add 12$ and u end up with: starter (soup or salad), appetizer, main dish, dessert u can go ala carte if u want, but really recommend the table d'hote mostly market cuisine, very simple in most case, but very tasty. i had a pied de veau (veal foot!!) wich is one of the best appetizer i'va had!! very difficult to explain (kind of pulled veal with a bit of fat, made in a fried square??!! kapish?!!) took the rabbit for main, same rabbit that they serve at Quartier Général, and it's always sooo goood; not dry at all, stuffed with yummies they only "letdown" was my baba o rum for dessert, it was good but not at the level of the other 2 courses. my GF had a duck tartare for app wich was excellent and the beef cheeck for main that was very good and tender, but maybe had a little too much fat? dessert was a chocolate type of cake/mousse/fondant wich was perfect for a chocolate lover! hands down the best BYOB in the area... and in my TOP3 in MTL

Yelp
We had an excellent experience here! As non-French speakers the staff was very accommodating and attentive, making sure we understood the menu. We sat at the bar with a birds' eye view of the chefs at work. The salad and squash soup were both wonderful, and the chef sent out a duck filet on bruschetta which was even moreso. We ordered the Arctic char and the mahi-mahi entrees and were blown away; perfect flavor pairings and both dishes were cooked perfectly. The chocolate ganache dessert was also divine. We would come back every night if we could!

Yelp
Really one of the best BYOB in Montreal. This little brother of "Quartier general" is a sure hit! Service is very professional, and well informed. Menu is varied and very well executed. It is in a rather remote location, but a fun area to visit, with easy parking. The prices are really decent. Bring on your good bottles, and you are sure to have a delicious great time!

Yelp
Great meal had pork someone else had the monkfish and the venison and shrimp suRf and turf. Wonderful flavor profiles and bring your own wine.

Paul M.

Yelp
Went there last night with my Parents. Recommended by the concierge of the hotel we staying at. Not in a touristy part of Montreal, but we were at the Botanical Gardens that was not far away. I think we were the only tourist there. I liked the restaurant a lot. Service was good and the food was very good too. I liked the way the menu was done, no meal would cost more than $40 a person for the full courses. We had the scallops and foie gras for appentizer and they were great. I had the Lapin (rabbit) was was good. My Parents had the veal and cod which was good too. Since this is a BYOB place, they do not sell any alcohol at all, so bring your own. I do recommend this. May be out of the way for tourist. Seems to be a great neighbourhood restaurant.

H M.

Yelp
This is a fabulous neighborhood restaurant in the Quebecois section of Montreal. We had an fantastic meal there about a month ago. Both the food and service were excellent, without being ridiculous and over-the-top. I'd go back in a nanosecond. Be forewarned: this restaurant does not have a liquor license. You need to bring your own wine. They have two seatings, so I suggest booking a reservation in advance.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I went there for our anniversary and this place was the perfect spot for us. Being young- I loved the BYO Wine policy as we could drink and have a good time without draining our pockets. The ambiance was very nice and that of a modern yet classy french restaurant. The 4 course meals were simply delicious and for once I felt like I was immersed in the taste. I felt like I was transported back to eating in a french restaurant Toulouse. Total for me and my girlfriend was under $100, for an amazing laid back experience with great experience. I would recommend everyone to try it out.

Lianet M.

Yelp
Great food! Very well prepared and presented. We had the duck tartare, the lamb and the duck magret, all very very good! Prices around 28 cad and it is BYOW. Great place for enjoying a nice dinner!

Clifford B.

Yelp
Went there 2-3 times and every time it was quite great, food-wise and service-wise. So I decided to go again tonight. Left a reservation on the answering machine during their afternoon break. The message says they'll call you back to confirm or state it's fully booked. Never got a call back. Called right now and they're complete for the night, and the guy who picked up admitted my message was probably still sitting in the voice mail, forgotten forever. WTF?

ML T.

Yelp
I have to say I had high expectations but I was disappointed .. So were my friends ... There was nothing to brag about... The food was tasteless and sides were nothing impressive... I love Le Quartier General from the same owners... Too bad .. But since it's new we'll see how it turns out in the future!
