Interlude

"The 240 acre, Grade I listed Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens were first planted in 1801 and are famous today for their azaleas, rhododendrons and even a wallaby colony. Within the grounds sits an Italianate mansion housing elegant bedrooms and this intimate restaurant. The surprise tasting menu keeps its focus firmly on the local area, with fabulous produce from deer to wild garlic coming from within the estate. The skilfully crafted dishes show good balance in their textures and flavours, and take on a creative, original style. The menu is presented in a shorter form at lunchtime." - Michelin Inspector

Ten of our Favourite Farm-to-Table Restaurants

"This intimate, elegant restaurant lies within the historic 240 acre, Grade I listed woodland gardens of Leonardslee Estate; first planted in 1801, now open to the public and famous for their azaleas, rhododendrons, and free roaming deer and wallabies. The ever-changing Interlude menu is guided by what produce is available at any one time in the vegetable gardens and what can be foraged from the woodland; these ingredients are then brought to life in chef Jean Delport’s skilfully crafted, highly original dishes." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

Great British Menu has introduced us to a range of chefs, some we have been lucky enough to visit. This year has to be the best one yet! It was the final heat of the series and Chef Jean Delport strolled into the kitchen. As soon as he was introduced as a Michelin starred chef celebrating South African cuisine, our ears perked up. Then he spoke... a South African accent! Intantly we were hooked. We had a patriotic favourite! All we hoped for now was that he would perform well and progress through the competition. And boy, did he do just that! I almost instantly booked a table for lunch, and within 3 weeks of the competition finale airing, we sat down in the bar at Restaurant Interlude. What followed for the next 4 hours can only be described as exquisite. The food was beautifully presented, lovingly prepared and wonderfully tasty. My favourite was the main course, Jean's GBM There and Back Again, an ode to Charles Ignatius Sancho, but the goat was changed to pork. The pork curry was gorgeous, the smoked rice with (I think) mushroom bernaise was epic and the quenelle of chilli pepper 'puree/paste' was stunning. It was super hot, but even with that heat, you could still taste everything on the plate. It was a fantastic show of skill allowing the heat to shine without overpowering everything. The chargrilled broccoli and okra with peanut satay was very moreish. The fruity, mixed spice dust on the fondant potato was like nothing I've eaten before and added a very interesting element to the dish. Love love loved this whole plate of food. The fish course and Rabbit meets Carrot course were also exquisite, but in reality I'd struggle to find anything I didn't like about any of the courses. I can honestly say that Jean and his amazing kitchen team, plus Anya, Helena, Simba and Ndosi and their front of house team were brilliant. We were very well looked after. The gardens around the house are great too for a before or after meal stroll. Some of the art displays in and around the property are fantastic. Let's not forget the vineyard there too... Make the effort and visit, you will not regret it. We will be back.

What a fantastic little gem. We were super excited to experience Interlude after following Jean on GBM. We started with a lovely little Sparkling wine tasting hosted by Simba Chitsato. The wine team were knowledgable and super friendly. Great to meet Ndosi who hails from my province KZN. Then the super lunch in the gorgeous dining room. Very creative and technically perfect dishes with a South African influence, which as a South African, I greatly appreciated. Quite possibly the best fish course Ive ever eaten. Jean was there, to our delight, and such a warm host. Only niggles we had on our table were, no offer to take our coats and nobody pulled out chairs at the table or offered napkins. Service details needed to get two stars, as the food is already exceptional. We will absolutely be going back soon.

Just incredible food and ambiance! The South African origin of the chef makes the food and the tastes so unique. Oh, and they serve coffee from my fave coffee company: Difference Coffee. I recommend Interlude to everyone visiting the area. The grounds and gardens are also magnificent. Unforgettable experience.

Interlude offers more than incredible cuisine, it is a complete experience & journey for the dinner. Incredible memories were made at our New years dining experience last night, we were made to feel so special at all times and every detail of our complex dietary requirements were meticulously remembered for each of us. Our warm welcome & expert non alcoholic drink preparation from Ndosi was absolutely wonderful & delicious, and Anya the manager ensured every detail and meal transition of the evening was immaculate. The food was absolutely exceptional: ingredients, flavours & textures even temperatures all made full advantage of & we loved learning the South African elements of our food! We adored the live cooking elements of the dishes, and the adding of sauces and garnishes at the table from the chefs who deeply impressed us. We felt very lucky to meet & learn from Jean Delport who prepared our South African dip in miniature hot pans and enthused about our course to us and left us with an overall excitement of understanding of the creative process that goes into each dish we experienced. We were deeply impressed by every staff member, front of house & chefs each able to give detailed explanation from the heart about each dish on our culinary journey. I must mention that Helena looked after us at the table beautifully. Simba was knowledgeable and kind and made my son feel really special and included at desert time (as he doesn’t like sweet desserts) by giving him a detailed explanation and tour of the cheeses which my son age 9 absolutely loved being given this time and explanation. I can’t recommend Interlude enough. This is a dinning experience you will never forget, it is truly special and the food, meticulous detail and kindness from all staff unparalleled.

I went to interlude for lunch with a comprehensive wine tasting of their new sparkling wine range. I have to say it is by far the best food experience I have ever had. This wasn't just a set tasting menu this was a journey mastered by chef Jean Delport, heightened by exceptional service and atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed how we transitioned through the rooms as we progressed through the courses.

This place is absolutely amazing! We celebrated mamma’s birthday and had an extraordinary experience that made us feel like family. As we arrived, we were greeted by adorable wallabies and surrounded by beautiful fields. The food was a work of art, and everyone was incredibly friendly. Thank you for the wonderful time.

Had a lovely tasting menu lunch at the Interlude at the weekend. The food was delicious, with phenomenal attention to detail, and the service excellent. It's also an incredibly beautiful place with amazing views and stunning gardens. The chiefs were all really friend and extremely accommodating as I don't enjoy fish, so they improvised brilliantly for me. Thank you again for this. It's an expensive lunch, but a real treat, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Special thanks to Chef Jess, our waiter Simba, and volunteer Graham (who drove us around the grounds in a golf buggy), you were all really friendly.

Gorgeously presented food and excellent service. Make sure you take the time to also walk around the beautiful gardens.
