Roast

"Roast is known for its British food and for promoting UK producers – which shouldn’t really come as a surprise considering its location in the heart of Borough Market. Ask for a table looking out over the bustle, and go for the Market Menu with bottomless prosecco." - Michelin Inspector

The Best Afternoon Tea in London | Eater London

"‘Very large’ are the words that best describes this one. Look at the size of those slices! And that’s only a quarter of what comes to the table! There are also finger sandwiches, savouries, scones served with strawberry jam and clotted cream. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan versions can be pre-booked. An excellent Borough Market option. £30" - Emma Hughes

Roast To Go Review - London Bridge - London - The Infatuation

"One of the many meals we’ve taken home in a doggy bag is a Sunday roast but, thankfully, that’s not what Roast To Go offers. This spot is the takeaway stall for Roast, the stalwart British restaurant in Borough Market. Although there’s lots on offer here, our go-to is the pork sandwich which involves crispy, crackling covered, roast pork. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli" - Jake Missing

Google
What a wonderful place in an even more wonderful setting. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we received first class service, nothing was too much trouble. The scallops and halibut dishes were both a taste sensation, I could not fault anything. Paired with a beautiful Albariño, this is what dining is all about. Not an everyday place and the price is reflected in that, but sure is a place to come if you want to be wowed or want to wow someone special.

Google
Right in the heart of Borough Market this place is an elevated oasis of calm above the frenetic buzz below. It is easy to miss but at the time of reviewing has a vibrant sunflower entrance as a land mark. Stairs and a lift are available giving the restaurant interesting views over the market below. Brunch was very good and there was no pressure to vacate our table. Both lunch and afternoon tea looked very good and I would be very happy to return to try either! Service was accommodating and efficient. Facilities were clean and white linen table cloths steamed smooth with a cordless iron….if you like that level of detail you appreciate this! My son’s only complaint was the amount of baked beans served in a minuscule pot was most definitely not sufficient.

Google
This was like a hidden gem inside borough market. Beautiful decor and equally beautiful cuisine. We had a private room so it was easy to chat; however, when the door opened it was quite loud out in the dining area. The service was top notch, prompt, clean, attention to detail - I couldn't ask for anything more. We started with some Scotch eggs and scallops, both of which were fantastic. Our entire table of 10 ordered the wellington and it came out looking and tasting amazing. Needed a pinch of salt, but that could be my American palette shining through. Fantastic sides with carrots, spinach, mushrooms and cheesy cauliflower. The drinks were great as well. I ordered the Big Ben and it was a hit at the table.

I had the pleasure of experiencing Roast’s Wimbledon-themed afternoon tea, and it truly exceeded expectations. From the moment we arrived, the attention to detail stood out from the tennis inspired decor sun flowers to the beautifully presented treats. The selection of sandwiches (halal) and scones was classic but elevated, while the themed desserts really stole the show: think miniature tennis balls crafted from mousse, strawberry tarts that gave a perfect nod to the iconic Wimbledon strawberries and cream, and a refreshing selection of teas. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the whole experience felt relaxed yet special ideal for both tennis fans and afternoon tea lovers alike. A brilliant balance of creativity, flavour, and atmosphere. Definitely one I’d recommend if you’re looking for something seasonal and memorable in London.

Google
We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch at Roast. We had the beef and lamb, both of which were very good and the meat was tender. The roast potatoes were deliciously crispy and we really enjoyed the mixed vegetables too. The freshly made mint sauce with the lamb was an excellent addition. All in all, a very good roast. The restaurant is light and airy and the view is over Borough market. The entrance way is a little over the top, in my opinion, with all the floral instagram style decorations, but the inside of the restaurant is less so. The formal dining area is quite nice. Riccardo, our waiter, was charismatic and friendly making the experience even nicer. We look forward to going back.

Google
A really great experience tonight. A bit pricey for my liking but with a good price comes good food. Got the roast beef dinner The Yorkshire was VERY dry to me but the gravy helped for sure! Not sure when I'll be back but would recommend for a nice night out. Dress code doesn't seem to be a thing however google had suggested smart casual. Staff were well dressed but locals appeared to think shorts and t shirts were good.

Google
This is a really nice spot for a traditional roast dinner. I don’t have much to compare it with, but I really enjoyed it. The servers were all very friendly and welcomed us kindly. We had a great table right by the window with view on borough market and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Google
This was a solid place for tea. The rules were a bit annoying to read on the menu and booking page but in reality were fine. Food was good. Tea selection was fine. Not very large but plenty of variety. Service is good. Scone is a bit too big. Tasted great but I’d prefer two smaller scones than the massive one provided. I will make it back here again.

Yelp
The food here was good and the service was even better. They were so friendly and kind to my daughter and everyone came by to just talk to her and keep her entertained. It was so nice for me, so I could get a couple of bites in in peace. If you know you know. I got the fish which was cooked okay. It was a tad dry, but the sauce helped with that. I wish the skin was crispier, but dish wasn't bad. I really liked the rice pudding. I could eat 5 of them! The rice was so soft and creamy. I really liked the sweetness of the dish and it went perfectly with the pear. I would say that food was a three but the service really helped this place get one extra star for me. Not to mention that 5/5 rice pudding I had at the end of the meal.

Yelp
Came here for a work dinner and it was a decent meal! The ambiance was quite nice due to it being on top of Borough Market but it was otherwise a standard upscale dinner spot. I had the beef wellington for the first time and maybe the last time. It was just quite thick.

Yelp
This place was great. Hopping on Easter Sunday and the roast beef was really good, yorkie was fantastic, roast taters were great and the Apple and Hibuscus crumble with custard was just amazing. I've been waiting a decade to finally try this place and it did not dissapoint. I'm holding back one star because about a month later I did Roast again with a friend, it was pretty good, we opted for a steak this time and well compared to US steaks it was just OK. The Ribeye was not impressive. The next night I went to the Devonshire for Sunday Roast and that was friggin amazing....separate review coming for that.

Yelp
We had afternoon tea here during our last day in London. This is a beautiful restaurant that is literally above the hustle and bustle of Borough Market. The staff were very professional and deferential, and the food and tea were amazing. The scones were the very best that I have ever had. The cost of afternoon tea was a bit higher than in many places, so it's definitely more of a splurge, but definitely one that you will remember.

Yelp
My lessons learned is that you should always go with a local's recommendation. My friend had wanted to book us into Hawksmoor for steak at Borough Market, but I was seriously craving Sunday roast. Since it wasn't Sunday, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Roast was both in the BM but also, serves a Christmas roast with all the trimmings. The service was pretty poor...the waiter was just so unfriendly and unaccommodating. Tried our best to interact with him as minimally as possible. The food was a 0. I ordered the beef roast which was the driest piece of meat ever. The Yorkshire pudding was the best part of the meal. I ordered the rice pudding which was pretty disgustingly bland....tasted like some you can get in a hospital canteen but just a big bowl of it. The manager took this off my bill which still came to 165 GBP for 2 ppl. Total waste of money. Don't let the festive decor fool you into thinking that the food is any good, as I did.

Yelp
Tea time here is awesome- love their scotch egg. Came back here for their beef Wellington. Of course it is delicious, but my another highlight is the side dish- truffle matched potato.

Yelp
One of the things I was most looking forward to during my trip to London was a Sunday roast dinner. But I was horrified to find out that Sunday roasts are typically only served ON SUNDAYS! The horror! I was only there for one Sunday and had no clue how I was going to choose from all the amazing options. Cue Roast! Welcome to the only restaurant in town that serves piping hot Sunday roasts EVERY DAY. There are other things on the menu, but clearly roasts are their specialty. I got the roast beef, which was amazing, and my husband got a delicious melt-in-your-mouth beef Wellington. Neither of us regretted our choices, the meat was fabulous! I was surprised to find that I liked the potatoes nearly as much as my luscious, perfectly cooked roast beef!. They had great flavor and a nice crispy outside. Service was friendly, the food came out quickly, and overall, this is a meal I will definitely remember.

Yelp
Checked in at 4PM on a Sunday for our reservation. The check in wait was too long for no apparent reason. We weee seated around 4:20PM. The restaurant has a very comfortable and delightful setting. It has a full bas we're patrons can be seated waiting for their tables. The services was painfully slow, it took us till past 5:00PM auto get our tea served and another 10 minutes before the food was served. The food was good ( I didn't say amazing). Had to ask for extra hot water for tea at least four times each time trying to grab someone's attention. Not sure I will return for an afternoon tea here with so many great options in London.

Yelp
This restaurant is so pretty and has a really lively atmosphere. Our service was okay, the server seemed pretty annoyed with us the entire time. The cocktails were bomb & super tasty. I didn't enjoy the beef Wellington, it was my first time trying so I think it's just personal preference. My friends got the roast beef which was delicious &. I would go there to get that dish again!

Melissa M.

Yelp
I made a reservation for afternoon tea for two. The food was well prepared, good quality, and very delicious. You get a lot of food in my opinion. The tea was also delicious and lovely. I opted for the tea and a cocktail. I ordered the Big Ben which was delicious and presented very well. Overall it was a delightful afternoon tea experience.

Yelp
I bought a voucher to use at Roast as an anniversary present for my wife. However, this was then followed by two close deaths in our family, and we were unable to use it till yesterday when we were told it was ten days past its validity and could not be used. And they would allow no extension no matter what the circumstances. I will never eat here again.

Yelp
We came here in 2016 and it was a wonderful Sunday dinner and we could not wait to return. Sadly, this time the meal was very disappointing and stupid expensive. To be brief, the yorkshire pudding was sad and flat, the roast cold and way too rare (ordered it med rare), and the serving much smaller than before. We shared an app, one cocktail, two meals, shared dessert and it was £130.

Yelp
There is not a better was to spend Sunday afternoon roast than the Sunday roast at Roast in Borough Market. A big bright bustling restaurant with great service starting with your welcome at the front desk, to ordering your first drink, to looking at that great big roast with beef, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. It's an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon with friends. Yesterday was my 4th time going over the past few years. Wander around Borough Market before lunch because the Market vendors begin to pack up around 3 pm.

Yelp
This is the one! Excellent food, service and ambiance. Great views of the market and really relaxing environment. Definitely need to try if your in the area.

Yelp
Well this was quite a letdown on most fronts. We booked a table almost two months ago. When we were seated, we found ourselves at probably the worst table in the space - right beside the bar with servers bustling on both side of us constantly. We would have thought that we would have been situated up in the main room near the windows, however there were two very large tables set for groups of 8 or 10 each, sitting empty the entire evening. We thought this were for later reservations but based on how they set other tables around us when we were leaving, I think they were just prepping for tomorrow's afternoon tea. Our service was quite bad. Our server constantly changed at the beginning. It's pretty unprofessional to be asked the same questions over and over. Plus they constantly leaned in front and reached across us to serve and remove dishes, in an almost comedic way. The Sunday roast menu was pretty lame. And to top it off they had just run out of Wellington, which was what a couple of us purposely came for. The ended up finding one left in the kitchen, so my wife ended up going with it at least, but I think that means she probably ended up with a subpar piece. Abd to top it off, it wasn't cooked enough and the dough still had a raw taste to it, still kind of pasty. 2 of us ended up with the roast beef and weren't very impressed. The texture was not great, almost mushy while still being a little tough to cut and chew. Plus the whole meal was quite bland and we had to add a fair amount of salt to make it somewhat flavourful. For this price we expected a much better experience.
google avatar

Elliot K.

Yelp
Terrible service, the waitress seemed uninterested in helping us and very rude. Plus she messed up our order and forgot to bring my order. Plenty of better options.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Thanks so much to the hostess for fitting us in, on a Sunday, without reservations. We ordered the 48-Day dry aged roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, so that we could try a typical English dish, and it did not disappointment! The meat was tender and the whole meal had great flavor! So glad we got to eat here!
google avatar

Savana B.

Yelp
Attentive staff, high quality food & drink, fancy atmosphere while still being fun! Would highly recommend.

Laura H.

Yelp
How are you called Roast, but you can't do a roast. Seriously, only got 2 stars because I did enjoy the decor and drinks, so probably good for a drink. However, 3/4 of our table had very overcooked lamb (after asking for medium rare). For this price point, most of the rest of the meal was mediocre. Just go somewhere else.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Awesome traditional roast dinner. Cooked to perfection. The yorkies were simply awesome with gravy. Will come back for sure.

Bob L.

Yelp
My wife and I had dinner at Roast tonight. We were seated and then basically ignored for the next 15 minutes. A member of the wait staff finally stopped by for drink orders. My wife wanted a glass of wine but there was no indication what wines they offered by the glass. When the list was shown, we ordered and our drinks were brought a few minutes later. About 10 minutes later, a different member of wait staff appeared to take our order. My wife ordered the roast beef medium rare, and I ordered the beef Wellington stating I also wanted it medium rare. Apparently I offended the sensibilities of the waiter (that was the last time he was at our table all night) as he stated "we only serve the Wellington medium rare." Our meals arrived about 20 minutes later. We had yet to see a member of wait staff in between to refill water glasses or see how we were doing (our water glasses were never refilled the entire meal, and no one ever approached to inquire how we were doing). My wife's roast beef was stringy and less than hot. Ironically, my beef Wellington arrived medium rather than medium rare and largely flavorless. The roast potatoes were so hard on the outside that it was virtually impossible to cut through them, even with a steak knife. At no point did anyone check in with us as we clearly were not an important table to them. We ate our meal and then sat as no one approached out table. Finally, the gentleman who took our drink order brought dessert menus, and my wife ordered the sticky toffee. She indicated that it was pretty good. Then another wait started as absolutely no one approached our table until I was able to get the attention of what appeared to be a manager. After waiting yet a few more minutes, he brought and just dropped off the bill. They automatically added a 12.5% "service fee" which would be hard to change absent making a big deal of it. I just paid it, but while tempted to express concerns about the service, I kept quiet. All in, including the service fee, the bill was £130. That is quite a high price to pay for mediocre food and miserable service. We had really looked forward to this meal but will not be back.

Yelp
Overall the food and service were nice. The tea was fresh and hot. The treats were rich and yummy. The scones were as expected/good. The sandwiches were mixed. I thought the chicken good but the cucumber and egg bland. The roast beef was warm. I was very dissapointed when I asked the head waitress of service (with shortish straight blond hair) before we were served not to bring us any salmon and she agreed with no issues. The food arrives all together on multiple plates and tiers. When we realized we had been served salmon, I asked our waiter if we could have egg salad or chicken instead. He went and asked the same head lady I had spoken too, pointed at us and she tokd him no. He told us she said the plates were premade. He felt so bad I did't pursue it. It was our only poor service interaction in a week of meals out in London.
google avatar

Sara H.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious. My husband and I both got the roast beef. We were there on a work lunch so just got a main each to be speedy. The service was a little slow which is the only reason they lose a star. The ambiance was lovely for lunch, we would love to go back and try a 3 course meal for dinner. Also wine was delicious. Looking forward to returning.
google avatar

Ivy Z.

Yelp
3.5/5 rounded down, because ultimately wouldn't recommend or return. Despite the pretty cool location overlooking Borough Market, Roast fell flat. My group ordered some raw oysters to start, our own entrees, and sides to share. I got the Beef Wellington, one of the specials of the day, which was a tad pricey at £34 (~$42). The beef was cooked a nice medium-rare, and was overall okay (not super flavorful but otherwise pretty tender and helped by the mushroom filling and accompanying sauce). However, I was surprised by how bad the sides were. The creamed spinach was fine but the roasted potatoes that came with my main were extremely dry and hard and the mixed market greens was the saddest bowl of veggies I had ever seen. I love vegetables but you couldn't get me to eat that - it was an unseasoned assortment of steamed (or boiled?) cabbage and brussels sprouts with one bite each of flavorless zucchini, cauliflower, and broccoli.
google avatar

Yelp
To be honest food wasn't that bad. Was acceptable in terms of quality. The roast I had in fact was quite good, despite the limited dinner menu on a Sunday night and then fact that lot of items were sold out. The sirloin roast I had was cook medium rare, just right for me and the cut was nice. The entire however was only alright with the poached salmon, slightly on he bland side and the veg didn't mix as well as I'd like. Dessert I had the white chocolate pudding and it was really good. The only thing that was odd was the peach source that didn't go very well. All in all the food there were lots to like, however everything was just 1 star shy of perfection. Overall deserves a solid 4 star. Now, why did I put a 3 star down if they deserve a solid 4 star then? It comes down to the fact that, they forced us to have last order at 6:30pm, when our booking was at 6:15pm. The rush was unnecessary and I personally think if that was the case it should have been clearly communicated st the booking!
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Very bright. We had a party of eight and they accommodated us well. Food was good... not sure it was great but had a wonderful evening. Service was average. All in all a good experience but could bring it up a notch to match their pricing.
google avatar

Yelp
We absolutely loved our tea time at Roast! It is £25 for tea time with the option to add champagne for £5 which we did. A great value for London! The location was also so convenient for my group. It overlooks Borough Market with gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows. The food and tea selection was amazing, as well. Roast did a phenomenal job accommodating the gluten allergy in my group, too. They prepared a full assortment of gluten-free options so everyone was highly satisfied! I would highly recommend this amazing value to a friend!

Yelp
Ah, the aggressively mediocre spot with the shine of a 5 star joint. I can only imagine how many people were duped by the classy veneer of this restaurant with it's own private elevator and glass walls. Anywhere else, the quality of this establishment would tank it rather quickly, but since they made the brilliant decision of placing it in a massive tourist trap all they have to worry about is getting people out the door as quickly as they come in. I met an old friend here for a drink so that we could catch up after nearly a decade apart. From the confused front desk to the hectic bar staff, we knew it was going to be a shitshow. Even seated AT the bar wasn't enough to get halfway decent service. If the food and drinks had made up for it then maybe my experience could've been salvaged, but alas... When the bartender doesn't know how to make a cocktail from their own cocktail list... that's a red flag. When the bar bites come out in micro portions... that's another red flag. When every waiter looks pissed off and every person behind the bar looks like their trousers have just been set on fire... get the hint by now? Overpriced and underwhelming would be my two word review for Roast. If anyone suggests coming back to this joint I'm going to politely steer them towards better ideas.

Yelp
We came here for our last afternoon tea in London. Such a disappointment to say the least. The service was awful and we had three different waiters...rude. The best part is that we were overcharged too.. will I recommend this place hell no.... I got a better service eating paella at the borough market downstairs....don't waste your money here....
google avatar

Rita M.

Yelp
I cannot, CANNOT believe I paid £100 for a roast dinner that was below the quality of a PUB's roast. DO NOT EAT HERE. The food was so so dry, mysteriously appeared 15 minutes after we had ordered (so it clearly isn't made upon order), unseasoned, tasteless, just downright terrible. We couldn't wait to leave. Avoid this place at all costs, the fact that they charge so much money for below mediocre food is highway robbery. It blows my mind that this restaurant was on a blog for best Sunday roasts in London.
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
When my bf said he wanna take me to a good restaurant I wonder what kind it would be. To my surprise a venue which is totally different from the restaurants outside the market. Generally good food and good service. Although they could sell harder about what is the best selling or what to add would goes well with our meal. The beef itself is tender and yummy but the pudding could be a bit over roasted. Would be better if more generous about the gravy. Would hope more gravy on the plate, a bit more thicker would be better.
google avatar

Lindy L.

Yelp
I guess they took the bad reviews to heart because I was not disappointed. My meal (beef wellington) and all the sides were delicious, perfectly cooked, artfully presented and the wait was not long (on a Sunday evening at 6pm). I'm American, so maybe my standards are low, but this will be in the top 10 most memorable meals of my life, and I have had some amazing meals. Granted, it was partly the location, service and obvious enthusiasm of the chefs and staff but the food was wonderful too.

Yelp
My friends and I went here for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago. Considering the price point and elegant, crisp interior with high ceilings and good views of BM, I'd love to give this place more stars but the lackluster service, some misses on the food and high price point prevents me from doing so. I have to give them points for a very creative vegetarian menu as well. The salad with cranberries was delicious and a decent-sized portion, and the truffle and burrata tortellini was rich but I think could have used a bit more truffle and the cheese seemed to be a ricotta more than burrata. The desserts though were fantastic. The chocolate peanut butter was sinfully rich and tasty as opposed to the much lighter strawberry panna cotta. The sticky toffee pudding was on point. My husband and dining companions enjoyed their meaty meals as well but no one raved about the food. The hitch here was the service. When I'm paying this much I expect to have more attentive waiters like I do in NY. We kept on having to ask the waiter (when he decided to show up every so often), to refill our water glasses even though I told him to just bring a jug. He never asked us how our food was, did we want anything else to drink, etc. I know service stinks in the U.K. compared to the US and this just exemplified it. Also at the end of the meal, our table was offered a toffee sponge dessert. It was pretty bland but our table agreed if we were going to be offered a dessert anyway we wouldn't have spent money on the aforementioned desserts. Overall, lovely interior but won't be returning.

Yelp
Went for their special summer menu for 30£ or 32 with a glass of prosecco and was pleasantly surprised. Starters: we all went for the scotch egg which was good but the piccalli was very sour for me Mains: we went for the roast lamb, pea tortellini and the pork belly and all were delicious!!! Desserts: peanut butter and chocolate mousse (very good and Im not a chocolate person) and the crumble (good but nothing special) Overall a great experience and I would go back and try Sunday roast!

Yelp
Ate there yesterday. Huge disappointment. Waiter brought wrong g&t to start. Then brought a second one that did not match the drinks menu. As to main course - I wanted the cheeseburger filet steak sandwich. The waiter told me they could only cook it medium well or well!!?? Couldn't cook it medium or medium rare!? Spoke with hostess and she was not helpful. Decided to order the pork belly BUT it was not a pork belly - it was a pork chop without the bone. Very little juicy fat attached. The wine by the glass menu doesn't even have a cabernet!!? Go elsewhere. These folks give no personal service.

Yelp
The Roast served food that was lukewarm and the "roasties" (potatoes) were the consistency of hockey pucks! I could barely cut one with a serrated knife so I gave up on the rest. My daughter ordered a beverage that arrived almost simultaneously with our bill and only after she mentioned the lapse to our very inattentive server. Four of us dined tougher and we had the same underwhelming experience. Disappointing. General tip for Americans traveling to England: I don't enjoy eating spicy food but favorful food is a must! The entire time I was traveling in London I wished I'd brought Lawry's seasoning salt across the pond. Thank goodness for the black pepper and ketchup packets that I found in the bottom of my handbag!

Yelp
On our last day in London, my family and I were sad we hadn't gotten to have a proper Sunday Roast. We arrived on Sunday, but the place we had gone was sold out. Anyways, trying to find a decent roast mid-week is harder than we thought, but Google and Yelp pointed me toward Roast. My sister and I both ordered the Roast dinner, which came with roast beef (obviously), a Yorkshire pudding, and rosemary roasted potatoes. I asked for medium rare, and it was perfect - nice and pink! The Yorkshire pudding was not bad, but devoid of much flavour to be honest. The potatoes were the low point for me; they were way too crispy on the outside and it made them hard to bite into. They also didn't seem to have a rosemary flavour, and instead I got a pretty strong taste of lemon. I felt like for the price of the roast dinner (35£) and the total cost of the meal for three plus wine (about 250$ Canadian, I would've expected a bit better tastes. The service was fantastic though and I can't fault them for anything there as our server was great.

Yelp
It's a great location, right in the heart of London in the ancient Borough Market and a walking distance to a lot of London's famous landmarks. The restaurant itself is nothing to write home about, just a big open landscape with an ugly bar in the center and tables scattered around without any particular plan. The noise level is literally deafening and if you want to have a conversation with your dinner party you're gonna need a pretty powerful set of vocal chords and a brain that is able to process the messages sent to you and discern them from the mighty roar surrounding you. Apparently if you visit any of the neighboring pubs and consume manly quantities of alcohol before you come to Roast for your dinner, that might help. Or at least, that's what the locals obviously do, judging from their behavior and the level of their voices. I had a suckling pig as my main course and that was - to express myself kindly - terrible. Rather than meat what I got consisted of pork shavings and crumbs obviously reheated and hardened in the process. This was swimming in an ugly-looking and foul tasting gravy and covered by a big blanket of caramellized pork skin, basically black in color. After the highly disappointing dinner which left a strange aftertaste in my mouth and stunned by all the shouting around me (some of the shouters less than three feet away) I thought I would ask for something sweet to at least have some good experience. After all, how wrong can you be about a cake or a pie. I ordered a date pudding with ice-cream topping and my was I in for yet another disappointment! The dry brown mass had a taste that you just could not define (beside the fact that it was nowhere near the dates) and the ice-cream topping turned out to be a lump of plain butter (WTF !?). Wow! On top of it all came the price! A glass of mediocre Malbec goes for 15 pounds! The service is highly efficient, fast and no-nonsense. To be fast and efficient, they have also eliminated courtesy and any other service element beyond the minimum necessary to execute the basic transactions. So, if you want my advice, there's plenty of restaurants in the area, go somewhere else.

Yelp
Booked online to come here by recommendation of concierge. 1) the only available seating was 1530. 2) the place was (and remained for our entire meal) empty minus another table of 2 (harbinger perhaps?). 3) The waiter was inattentive (didn't ask if a refill was desired or how the meal was at any time). 4. All the food, including so-named "starters" came out at the exact same time. 5). The food was less than mediocre (the only tasty thing was the heritage tomato salad); the roast beef was ho hum; the "roasties" were bricks that even the steak knife struggled to cut (these tasted as if either old or had been roasted, re-roasted, and then reheated again); the chips were similar to the roasties. For all this, you will overpay significantly. Please do yourself a favor and dine elsewhere!

Yelp
Roast is conveniently located above borough market with a fab view of the market! The food is delicious. They do a three course menu at lunch for 30£ (started, main course and dessert). I ordered the watermelon, mozzarella and tomato salad as the starter. It was good - refreshing and light. I went for the fish as the main course, which was delicately cooked and not over cooked! Hooray. Over cooked fish is the worst! Lastly, for dessert, I ordered the apple and raspberry crumble with vanilla custard. So yum! For an additional 5£, you can add a glass of prosecco. We did and it was worth it. Roast is also surprisingly kid friendly. They have change tables in the bathroom (women's only ) and high chairs. Kids eat free in school holidays!

Yelp
Excellent cocktails and beer, terrific friendly service, upbeat atmosphere. Modern interpretation of British cooking using well-sourced ingredients. Great view from the bar of the Borough market.

Yelp
In hindsight, I should've just taken care of all my lunch needs at the Borough Market downstairs instead of coming here. Wanted a traditional Sunday roast experience so made reservations here. I got their tasting menu but I was very, very disappointed. Not to mention their "best seating" was by a floor to ceiling glass window where the sun beat the brightest so I was basically sweating bullets throughout the entire thing. I couldn't even be mean about it because my server was so sweet. Their roast was not good. No flavor, just thrown together. The only saving grace was probably the Scotch egg which I tried for the first time but even that wasn't enough. Everything was just...so bad. The greens, the dessert, the entree...how is it possible to make everything from start to finish less than mediocre? Towards the end I was eating as quickly as I could to get it over with. I couldn't wait to get out of there. My server told me he hoped to see me again, but I hope I won't. I left a lot of food on my plate untouched. Don't fall for the "fancy schmancy" vibe they've got going on here.

Yelp
I happened to have been lucky enough while visiting London to have been randomly strolling through Borough Market on a cold Saturday, and looked up --- I saw what looked like a wonderful restaurant where we could sit and get warm over a few glasses of wine and some modern English cuisine. So, we asked some security personnel and market employees for directions on how to get upstairs and then made our way up in the elevator into a beautiful space with unfortunately, a very rude hostess. The Roast hostess was clearly dismayed that we would dare enter such an establishment without a reservation and didn't even offer the suggestion to wait at the bar or to sit in the open seating in the lounge area. She said, "You can try coming back in 45 minutes." She then answered the phone and we weren't able to get her attention again to ask if what we suspected was lounge seating was in fact open. It turns out that it was - thanks to the assistance from another server we sat down. From then on the experience was wonderful. Servers worked collectively and the Sommelier appeared promptly upon request and made several recommendations on wine and encouraged and offered us tasting prior to choosing. The food ranged from pickled herring and beets, to grouse, and lambs livers. Since I'm American and wanted to try something "British" that I'd never had before I went with the herring and partridge. The meat was a tad overdone but the saucier at Roast knows his/her stuff. My BF had the lambs livers and his sauce was possibly the most exquisite sauce I've ever had. It was layered in flavor and rich beyond belief. My sauce was also perfectly balanced and enhanced both the partridge and the brussel sprouts served with the dish. Roast had a broad menu but I'd venture a guess that their true focus is in meat and game so if you're a veggie you should probably not bother and just get some curry downstairs. This place is for serious diners and foodies. I'd recommend this restaurant to any locals who are into nouveau British cuisine, or out of town guests who would appreciate the experience like we did. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Yelp
I think I'd give this place a solid 4 stars. It's upscale dining but not fine dining and the price does reflect that (meaning on the more expensive side but not atrocious). If you can, I'd suggest going when they have their £30 set menu (appetizer, main, and dessert) - check online to see what times that is available as it is not available for all of dinner time. If not, you'll pay £25+ for a main + £7+ for dessert with an additional vat/service charge. Portion sizes are larger than typical London style though so again, the price isn't unreasonable when you think about it. I'd highly recommend their sticky toffee pudding - absolutely delicious! Their beef roast wasn't as bad as most reviewers make it out to be and their roasted potatoes are quite good with a nice crunchy shell but soft inside (apparently fried in duck fat?). Their pork belly is also quite good but as with all pork belly cuts, can be a little fatty. The view is nice as well if you're by the windows or under the glass roof. All in all, I'd say this is a good place for a nice splurge dinner/date.

Yelp
I saw Andrew Zimmern go to ROAST on an episode of "Bizarre Food" once and made a mental note to go there the next time I was in London. I love British food, which is probably odd for a Thai person, but mark it up to nostalgia for my youth spent mostly in England. The opportunity came in August 2010 when I had to go to the UK for a friend's wedding. Booked a table ahead of time. I loved the concept of the changing menus and seasonal ingredients etc. It was definitely a high end restaurant and the people on the tables near us looked like they could have been some politicians or VIPs. We got a very nice table by the big windows that over looked a couple of pubs below so we got to do a lot of people watching as many of them were standing drinking outside on the streets .... it was warm in August and they were probably the smokers. The menu choice du jour was all mouth watering but we all had to make a decision in the end. (see photos) I loved everything that I got. The only complaint probably was how expensive it all was; even though I didn't pay for the meal myself! And a little bit on the pretentious / snooty side. I do love gourmet and haute cuisine from time to time but if I have to break the bank to have it then I can certainly live without it. I think it is certainly possible to make very fine food at a reasonable price. Final verdict: Although I was very happy with the meal overall, I thought it was overpriced and a bit pretentious. It was great to get to try it once but I probably won't bother going back. Unless someone with very deep pockets wants to take me .... anyone? Just kidding.

Yelp
It's well situated, but service is lacking and the food is about average for its class while the price is above average. Food: had the braised pork belly with whipped potatoes. The belly was unctuous and slightly herbaceous with a crunchy, chewy skin. The fish & chips were pretty standard. Service: we didn't have reservations for lunch so we waited at the bar while tables started opening up around us. When we saw they weren't being filled, and the hostess hadn't notified us that a table was available, we asked again and were seated a few minutes later and given menus. The menus were blank. So we asked for menus with actual menus which were quickly provided. Thereafter service was fine, nothing memorable or outstanding. Overall, the food and service value didn't match the price tag.

Yelp
Apparently the British love beef, particularly for lunch on a Sunday. As I love beef, and brunch.. eating Sunday Roast in London was on our to do list during our visit. We wanted to try 'Roast' (what better place for Sunday Roast than a restaurant that's named "Roast) after seeing it featured on the Food Network. It is located above Borough Market, and you have to take an elevator up. The restaurant is contemporary and spacious - it felt upscale and polished. Our group made reservations for 11:30am a week in advance for a table of 3 and were seated promptly when we arrived. However, once the server came by, we were told, rather rudely, that lunch isn't served until noon and to just come back in 30 minutes. We weren't sure what to do, so we kind of just sat there for 30 minutes while no one checked up on us. It was rather difficult to get someone's attention, but once someone came by around noon to take our orders, all the three of us decided to go for their Saturday special Beef Wellington, a bottle of champagne, and Yorkshire pudding as a side. The Beef Wellington Special was a whole fillet of beef covered in pastry accompanied by three large roast potatoes. They never asked how we wanted the meat cooked, so the beef was tougher than what I would've liked. However, the roast potatoes were great, and the Yorkshire pudding was light, which I used to mop up the juices of the meat. At these prices (£25-30 per entrée) for Sunday Roast, I'd expect to be getting superior service and food. However, service was erratic and not friendly - the waiters had no interest in what they were serving or what we wanted. Food is only average - nothing to rave about. Unfortunately the bill automatically included a 12.5% Service charge. Will be looking for Sunday Roast elsewhere the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Sitting above the Borough food market eating here tastes and feels very fresh. Expect delicate starters and healthy portions of meat. The roast menu includes very good fish, meat and bird - when the description warns of possible buck shot you can't help to think the pheasant is fresh! The menu reads like grandma's country estate but presentation is west side. All items come with sauce and sides so don't look here for plain dishes. With a sensitive palette you may be bothered by all the salt. However, we ate here after a week long holiday in Paris and welcomed simple meats prepared in a more comfortable style. Restaurant is also comfortable albeit with white table clothes, pressed linen and a sharp staff. Eat by the open kitchen and watch your food take shape, by the windows peering over a bustling market, or on the raised platform to be center of attention.

Yelp
We walked here from Tate Modern and entered this Borough Market warehouse like structure. Entering the dining room you feel like you're on a film set. It's industrial and open. The main dining floor is raised overlooking the kitchen area and sat there you see all the hustle and bustle. I didn't get pics of my slow-roasted free-range pork belly with mashed potatoes and Bramley apple sauce, but it was just how modern British homemade food should be. Nicely cooked meat, lashings of gravy and potatoes you want more of. It was washed down with some nice wine. I'm can't remember if there was time or room in the belly for dessert. I do know that we walked along the banks of the River Thames back to our hotel. A perfect night. There are daily specials: chicken, liver, lamb, ham, beef...and the Sunday 3-course meal! All look amazing on the website http://www.roast-restaurant.com/roast-menu
