San Diego’s Best Burgers | Eater San Diego

"Very little about this no-frills burger joint has changed since the 1970s, except that it’s become a bit more crowded due to its high-flying reputation. Proving that beauty often lies in simplicity, diners can order a perfectly greasy third- or half-pound burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese with pickles on the side and pickled banana peppers in a tableside pot. Be sure to swing by during lunch to enjoy the weekly special that runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday to Friday — a third-pound cheeseburger with fries, and either a soda or pint of beer for $19.50. No cash? No problem. The former cash-only pub now accepts credit cards. Know before you go: Diners must be at least 21 years old to visit Rocky’s." - Roxana Becerril

Google
Our favourite pub in San Diego. Very welcoming vibes. Great selection of beers. Very good burgers. Cool mixed types of people there. Dough is a great waiter & host. Feels like the ideal 3rd place to spend time with friends. Highly recommend!

Google
Casual, dive bar atmosphere with beer and wine. You can catch the game here, too. This was my first time back in over a decade. Everyone used to come here for the burgers. Today, I was disappointed with the burger and fries. I order a ⅓ lb. Cheeseburger. It was dry, no flavor and I ended with bun left because the patty was fat and small. the fries weren't any good either. I needed to add salt but even still. Sad.

Google
Very good burgers and actually not as greasy as the friendly and they taste better than they look. Very difficult to find parking waited 15 mins to find parking so I called get my order and a parking spot open up. I was kind of on a time schedule, either way it still took them 25 mins to get my order ready so I drank a beer and called my guest to just meet me there. I was told if you order online you can’t sit down. I had already paid 38 dollars for two burgers and fries and a beer and tipped $7.57. I guess you aren’t really welcome here unless they know they are getting tipped which I did tip. I was told three times and even warned that next time I would not be allowed to sit if I ordered my food from the phone. Mean while there were at least 4 open seating areas. Also the all gender bathrooms is the guys bathroom really but everyone can use it. They do have very good peppers and I will eat here again but it doesn’t feel like a no worries environment.

Google
Very simple menu; only four items so you know what you were getting. Burger was very good; tasty with tons of flavor. Good fries and good beer too. A lot of TVs to watch sports and hang out.

Caitlin Steinbach

Google
Cannot beat Rocky’s for a solid burger. Previously cash only, they recently started accepting credit cards. Indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is fantastic. The price reasonable. The menu short and perfected. Burgers. Fries. Beer. Wine. Don’t forget the hot peppers on the table. A must-try.

Shorty

Google
Burgers, fries, beer, and wine simple yet perfect and let’s not forget to mention the banana peppers on the table a must try. Reasonable price Staff is friendly plenty of tvs to enjoy some sports. There’s inside and outside seating

Google
Great bar and chill atmosphere where you can rock out with your homies. My cheeseburger was cooked to perfection. Juicy meat, crisp buttered burger and fresh vegetables with a side of fries to share.

Lucas Fonseca

Google
Best burger and coldest beer in San Diego. I am a loyal customer now, I go every week sometimes 2-3 times a week 😅

Yelp
I love this place. Huge delicious juicy Burger and crispy fries in a basket, small dimly lit bar with low ceilings, cold beers, sports playing on all the TVs, small tables, always busy for lunch. Service is super quick, no frills, and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the BEST Burger's and Fries in San Diego. What I love about this place: Friendly service, consistently perfectly cooked burgers that have crispy edges and exterior moist and medium inside, melted cheese, fresh vegetables and soft toasted brioche bun, with crunchy crispy fries. What is bothersome: lack of parking, popular so often crowded at times, cash only and the wait for the food. It's a local social pub atmosphere, classic rock background, with a tight close quarters bar. But still one of the best burger places in town!
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
A San Diego favorite. My preferred burger type is a double-pattied smash burger w/ camelized onions. But when it comes to classic burgers w/ a thick angus patty, Rocky's is hard to beat. Easy going vibes w/ good service at the bar. Large burger w/ that nice raw onion to give it that bite. The patty is well seasoned. The fries are great (hot and crispy), and that beer selection is pretty good. Street parking is hit or miss, but it's worth it. Plus you're not far from the beach. Summer is coming, see you at Rocky's!
google avatar

Alexandra D.

Yelp
I loved the fresh burgers and fries (although would have liked more seasoning on both) and I liked the simplified menu. It made ordering a breeze! The pub was crowded with what seemed to be several regulars. Everyone was enjoying their drinks and food. The servers were nice and friendly but I got lost in the crowd and didn't get timely service. Street parking was a little tight but I will definitely return.
google avatar

Imee C.

Yelp
Went here last Thursday for happy hour. They only have street parking. The place is also cash-only. We ordered 1/2 lb cheeseburger and an order of fries. Server was very attentive and got our food right away. The burgers, in my opinion, is one of the best in San Diego. This is why we've been coming back to this place for over 10 years. This is definitely a place I would come Back to every now and then. Just have to be patient in looking for parking
google avatar

Enrique G.

Yelp
Best Burgers in San Diego period! Bring cash and patience, no credit cards accepted and it takes forever to get your burger. But once you get it, brace yourself!
google avatar

Christine V.

Yelp
I love this place. It's just nostalgic from when I lived a block away and not much has changed. Great burgers and fries. I swear the beer tastes better here! But I held back and only had one. Service was fast and friendly. I love the old vibe and ambiance. It's holding tradition and keeping lots of people happy. I'll be back!!!
google avatar

Rebecca E.

Yelp
This was the second stop on our hamburger tour. Food is ELITE. Everyone in our group gave this spot a 10/10. Service was meh. The staff was really busy and seemed annoyed - except the bartender. The bartender seemed to be in a good mood. The interior is sporty with a lot of bar seating.
google avatar

nomi b.

Yelp
The best burger in town, love it here service is great and the vibe is so fun , I love by the block and I come here at least once a week for their amazing burger and fries
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
I Always try and search for the BEST burger in San Diego and always come back here. Ordered 1/2 & 1/4 pound with cheese, Basket of fries to share and was hot & crispy til the last fry. Cold beers on tap or bottles. Fight me but. Should be nominated hands down the BEST Burger joint in San Diego!!! They did open up outdoor seating on the sidewalk but still not kid friendly. They also have lunch specials Service is friendly have a beer while you wait I honestly think CEO's of hamburgers joints should come and enjoy these burgers. They might learn something lol.

Yelp
We came 5min after opening on a weekend, and it was already 75% full. I ordered at the bar and was served relatively quickly. The atmosphere was very much that of a sports bar, with a lot of TVs showing football games and a relaxed vibe. This place is CASH ONLY. Food: We visited here because their burger is listed on all the top burger lists for San Diego. The cheeseburger was definitely tasty and juicy, but I wouldn't say that it should necessarily draw people from all corners of San Diego county the way the burger lists imply. We came from far away, and even though we enjoyed the burger, we probably would not return. -1/2 cheeseburger ($11): As mentioned above, the meat patty was juicy. The raw onions overwhelmed the cheeseburger, but I had forgotten to request grilled onions (per the recommendation of other yelpers). -Fries ($5): Generous portion of crispy and nicely seasoned fries We did free street parking, and were able to find a spot within a one block radius. This was on a weekend
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Other than the busiest of times, I am always able to find a spot at the bar pretty quickly, I love that they have the outside area available for nice weather or bringing dogs, they are not as gruff as they used to be (both a pro and con) and their burgers take time so don't come in here on a tight schedule! But if you have time to chill, want a few beers while you watch a Padres game or chat with a neighbor while you wait, it's worth it! Split fries with a friend and tip the staff well!
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Living in San Diego, you hear about this place quite a bit. Their burgers speak for themselves. They have that backyard barbecue kind of flavor. Really simple menu, not complicated, so you're not going to have to spin your wheels and worry about what to order. Cold beer on tap on a nice sunny day with a burger and fries. Also, it's in Pacific Beach. So you're not too far from the ocean. Walking into the bar I kind of had a locals only vibe. But everyone was friendly and it was very easy to place an order. I went during a weekday, in the early evening. There was plenty of seating. You may have to park a block or two away depending on the time of day.
google avatar

Avelino C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 30 years. I think it's the best hamburger in San Diego Services consistent normal. This is very low-key place mostly local. Here are excellent and they have a good selection of beer. Have a very simple menu and they only accept cash.
google avatar

Samantha W.

Yelp
I can see why people hype Rocky's burgers. They really are very good. Juicy, seasoned well, cooked perfectly. Good amount of very fresh veg with the burger. Really delicious.

Cristina C.

Yelp
Been coming here for like 15 years MIN. And granted every other time never had IDs checked because the guys working know us by face, Walked in 4th of July and the bouncer or Burger guard asked for ID and realized we forgot one of ours IDs and before I could even get a word out the bouncer was a COMPLETE ASSHOLE literally said "GET OUT" before I could even say a word. (We were very nice and respectful speaking to the guy) I used to love coming here since I'm a local and always been treated great! but after being treated like absolute shit I won't be coming back. I even called to let the staff know stating "I'm sure you won't give a shit either" and basically the guy confirmed he didn't give a shit either. Smh! DO BETTER! TREAT PEOPLE WITH RESPECT WHO ARE TRYING TO SPEND MONEY AT YOUR ESTABLISHMENT.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
The food here is amazing. FRESH burgers. Simple but so dang good. Absolute must. The staff was friendly, kind and ready to serve.

Milo B.

Yelp
First time at Rocky's. Great ambiance. Dive bar with classic rock on the speakers. Cash only for an old school vibe. Simple menu. Beer, burgers and fries. Everything is made fresh, so the food was delicious and hot. Solid beer selection but nothing fancy. They know what they do well and stick to it. If you like spicy, give the peppers on the table a go. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Adam P.

Yelp
Super chill spot, lots of locals and a cool old school tavern vibe. Parking is pretty good for the area as well. Our server was incredibly nice and helped us find a seat (This place gets very busy, but it's worth it). The burger was great! Not a lot of places do a traditional pub burger anymore (smash burgers are fine, but this hits a very specific spot) and the fries were cooked to perfection. Really great beer selection as well. Will be returning next week!

Yelp
Roxy review , Watch Patrick Mc Bride at the rocky from 2 to 4 . Don't miss it . They have great drinks .

Yelp
a hole in the wall AND a hidden san diego gem. I brought my boyfriend here after seeing it come up a couple of times and we were in the area. We brought our dog and stood to the side while we waited for a table. The waiter was this cool older gentleman who was friendly and standing on business bc he was tending to everyone especially accommodating to our dog. He took our orders and made sure we were feeling comfortable. We ordered 2 half pound burgers and a side of fries. The burgers really are the BEST burgers in SD and i'm putting them up there with the friendly. My bf and i did think the half pound was a little too big and next time we will get the 1/3 pound burgers. but no complaints on taste, they nailed that

Yelp
My wife, Brother and I were craving a burger so we went to 4 different locations. This classic Rocky's cheeseburger will never let you down. On your way back up Ingraham you've got to stop and fill up before you hit the beach or coming home after a surf. The service was quick and efficient. A great place should have some cooking time otherwise you know something was rushed. The ambiance was perfect for lunch, it was dark and perfect for a Monday cocktail or brew. The burger was great. Fries were hot and crispy. There were several table side condiments to satisfy everyone's palate. If you're in the Pacific beach area, Rocky's is a landmark place to stop for some food and drink. Enjoy!
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
Iconic neighborhood institution. As you can see from their menu, they serve burgers, fried, and drinks. Comic sans font. Cash only. Don't forget your ID for admittance. Was busy even on a weekday evening. Service is no-nonsense and straightforward. We enjoyed our food and beverages. Would return when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Fun place to grab a burger. However, the bathroom situation is not fun. O the very worn door, is a note "warning handle falls off. Well......my suggestion to you is to get it fixed.

Yelp
I finally got a chance to visit Rocky's, a spot that's been the buzz among my friends for a while now. I must say, it lived up to every bit of the hype! The Burgers: Right off the bat, the burgers are the stars here. I tried the 'Rocky's Classic' - the patty was juicy, grilled to perfection, with just the right amount of char to add that smoky flavor. Topped with their signature sauce, crisp lettuce, and a perfectly melted slice of cheese, it was a bite of heaven. And the bun, oh! Fresh, soft yet held together till the last bite. Sides and More: Their fries deserve a special mention - perfectly crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and seasoned just right. The Bar Scene: Rocky's bar scene adds to the charm. With a great selection of craft beers and cocktails, it's a perfect pairing with their burgers. I enjoyed a local IPA that complemented my meal beautifully. Ambiance: The vibe of the place is casual and lively, with an eclectic mix of rock and roll and indie tunes playing in the background. The decor is a cool mix of retro and modern, creating a welcoming atmosphere. ‍Service: The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, offering great recommendations. Despite the busy crowd, our orders were served promptly, and the staff checked in often to ensure we were enjoying our meal. Conclusion: In summary, Rocky's is a gem for burger lovers. Whether you're there for a casual meal, a drink at the bar, or to enjoy a fun evening with friends, it delivers on all fronts. I'm already planning my next visit to try some of their other burger creations! Rating:

Yelp
Had a really good burger. Sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly. It's simple but I crave it and want to go back despite going a few days ago.
google avatar

Yelp
Voted as having one of the best burgers in San Diego, Rocky's is a small pub that seems to be filled with regulars. If there's a game going on, you can bet that it'll be a full house with standing room only. Cash only but there's an ATM machine inside by the bathrooms. We were a little confused when we walked in. I didn't know if it was open seating or if we ordered at the bar. Eventually, someone told us to just sit anywhere and came to grab our orders. I think if you're doing beer, you can go to the bar. The workers' attitudes were kind of nonchalant so I felt a little intimidated to ask what we were supposed to do. Now on to the burgers. Not the best, not the worst. I liked that the buns were crispy and the patty was really juicy but I don't think there was enough flavor. Between the 1/3 and 1/2 lb burgers, there was barely a price difference so of course we got the heftier one. If you like banana peppers, each table has a small jar that you can help yourself with. It was a good meal but is it the best burger in town? Not in my opinion. Would I come back again? Probably not. I'm glad I got to try it though!
google avatar

Arian B.

Yelp
Best burger in California. The meat is freshly ground and served hot. I have been coming here since I turned 21, so 13 years, and it never ceases to amazing me. Every time my wife and I can not decide on a place to eat we end up getting Rocky's. Very affordable for what you get. Make sure you do not forget your id it is 21+ and they are strict. Menu has 3 options: hamburger, cheeseburger, and French fries. They are experts at all three! Thanks guys for always delivering the #1 American burger.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
A dive bar !! Please remember that when reviewing lol. We stopped in to watch the Bills game tonight & grab some food. The service was not the friendliest, but it is what it is. I ordered: 1x 1/2 lb cheeseburger 1x fries 1x Pacífico The burger was really delicious but took a bit to come out. The fries were bomb, super fresh and a great cut. And the Pacifico was as good as always. I would come back!
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Best burger in San Diego, hands down. I'm here right now for the first time in 5 years and it's exactly as I remember it. Same great food, same people, same vibe. Never change, Rocky's!
google avatar

Neil E.

Yelp
A fav spot of mine to get my whistle wet and enjoy a good burger. After hanging out at the Pacific beach all day or playing volleyball in mission bay I always find myself here. This is definitely a locals spot but they take care of visitors well. They have a TV for the games, an intimate bar and tables inside, and a cool outdoor hangout area. If you're in the area drop in and get the beer, fries, and burger combo.
google avatar

I T.

Yelp
Best place for a classic burger. Hands down. Keep in mind that you need cash on you. It would also be a great addition if they had a good homemade ranch to go with the food.
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
Been here a few times. I tried it recently as it had been years since and everyone raves about it online. Took almost an hour to get my one burger. They don't take cash. People think it's cool when dive bars only take cash. At this day in age, it's to avoid taxes and only serves an inconvenience and appeal to hipsters and want to be locals. Food average. Soggy bun not worth the hype.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Maybe I need to diversify my burger portfolio more but I believe it's the best in San Diego. To put it this way, any time I am "forced" to get In-n-Out burger I always think of how much I miss Rocky's burgers in that moment. If I could eat it every day without getting complacent, I most indeed would. Simple menu, 1/4 or 1/2 half pounder with or without cheese. Fries optional. Make sure to tip the person who checks you out, you won't regret it. Remember this is a pub so it's low key decor. And most importantly CASH ONLY!
google avatar

Keith D.

Yelp
The greatest burger of all time? Maybe. You don't need a review...just go. It'll blow your mind Things to know A) super busy. We were there at 2pm and it was packed B) cash only C) not really a family spot, definitely more of a straight up bar scene though they do have outdoor tables. D) the waiters may seem rude but it's really that they are trying to get these burgers out E) stop reading this and go get that burger
google avatar

Trisha G.

Yelp
Always a delicious local spot! The burgers are always on point, the hardest decision is how much meat do you want! lb or 1/2 lb The owner is a true American Dream, working his way from bottom to top and giving it the love it deserves! The best part is the fact I can walk there from my house Thanks Fellas!

Simon A.

Yelp
The food was really good but the food takes really long time ti arrive and the place doesn't accept credit card, they didn't mention it when we ordered so I needed to go back home and get money.

JK H.

Yelp
Goddamnn the best burger out there, this place is a pb legend i once ate there with LT , and Philip rivers, they had they're OL on the outside of the table to keep things easy, but honestly if they are eating here duh, why would I not? Great place the bar tenders don't take no shiii, so be smart and order right. Great place! It used to fuel the San Diego chargers!
google avatar

Reena A.

Yelp
Best classic cheeseburger in SD. Fries are always cooked great too. Love the jar of hot yellow peppers on the table. I've had one bad experience a few years ago with a long wait and overcooked patty... but it's forgivable because I've had many great ones.
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
Food: Burgers and fries were amazing. This is not health food, folks. It's like gramma made it in her little fry pan and didn't bother to drain the grease. Bun is cheap white and falls apart from the juiciness, fries were hot and crispy yet fluffy inside. Just solid all the way around. Service: The service was efficient, he kept an eye on us but the personality was that of a moldy dish rag. We didn't ask for change out of fear for his scorn. He got and extra 5% for being intimidating. Ambiance: Little hole in the wall vibe, couldn't have been better. The only downside...places like this you usually feel super welcome and comfortable. The server made us feel like an annoyance. I'll be back but will do my best to steer clear of this particular servers wrath.
google avatar

Samir Y.

Yelp
Hands Dien the best burger in San Diego. Great ingredients, fresh toppings, amazing fries. Great beer selection too! Can't say enough good things about them!
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
Good, but not San Diego's best! They stick to the basics, and while I admire the simplicity, I felt the burgers were missing a great sauce. The grilled onions are a must if that's your jam. Beer selection was on point, there's something for everyone. They're still cash only, but an ATM is available!

Sarah F.

Yelp
Still the best burger in San Diego hands down! Fresh, juicy, and delicious! No gimmicks - just an amazing beef burger. Just remember to bring cash - no credit cards
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
I visit Rocky's Crown Pub quite frequently as I LOVE a good ol' fashioned classic burger. Located on Ingraham, the parking can be a bit tricky but if you get lucky, you're in for a treat! The pub is also cash only- so be prepared with some mula. There are also no vegetarian options (does not apply to this carnivore!) I must share a past experience here as it is the only way to describe how delectable this burger is. I was dining in with a friend and while he was at the bar, placing the order (service is so fast here) I was sitting at a community table with a group of slightly inebriated women... one leans over to me and we bond over our shared love of a Rocky's Burger. The defining moment in the story is that she says, "it's like the human version of the Krabby Patty". INATANTLY AGREED!!! Plankton would be dying to get his hands on their secret formula and by golly whoever the Mr. Krabs is of this establishment has done it right.
google avatar

Cody R.

Yelp
If you're looking for arguably the best burger in San Diego, look no further than Rocky's Crown Pub. The burger here is the epitome of a classic - delicious, juicy, and undoubtedly satisfying. The pub boasts an enticing happy hour during the week, offering deals that are hard to resist. You can enjoy a scrumptious burger paired with some of the best fries you'll ever taste and a refreshing beer, all at a discounted price. And speaking of the fries, they stand out on their own merit - crisp, flavorful, and the perfect companion to that burger. A few things to note for first-timers: The pub operates within a cozy space, but they've expanded to offer outdoor seating. Be prepared to show your ID - this isn't a place for the kids. Seating operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so try to time your visit strategically, especially since it can get crowded during happy hour and on game days. Service is versatile; you can either order at the bar or wait for a staff member to approach you at your seat. One key detail to remember is that Rocky's is a cash-only establishment, but they've got you covered with an on-site ATM. I wholeheartedly recommend Rocky's Crown Pub. Whether you're a local or just passing through, it's a taste of San Diego you won't want to miss.
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
This place isn't really a dive bar since it's nice both inside and out. But the fact that they only serve a limited selection of beers and food (just burgers and fries) brings this place close to the dive bar category. It's also cash only but they have an ATM right outside just in case. They open a bit earlier on Sundays for football and have a lot of TVs for the occasion. The service is also great as they have plenty of staff working and are very attentive. I'm not a regular like half the customers here but felt right at home.
google avatar

Bill J.

Yelp
The burgers are honestly the best of what San Diego has to offer. You don't get to choose medium rare or well done, but I'm sure you'll be happy with what you get. The burgers are charred on the outside and juicy on the inside. I'm guessing they use salt and pepper only, but o could be wrong. Cash only everyone! No credit cards.
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
My favorite burger of all time is from Rockys! You cant go wrong here. I've come here several of times with friends, family, and my boyfriend. All agree this is their favorite burger spot as well. Besides the burgers, i love the peppercinis they have on the side and their fries and beer selections are on point as well. I recently got take out from here, and their service is on point! They gave us extra ketchup and mustard packets and the food was hot and fresh. I can't wait to be back soon!
google avatar

DeLese B.

Yelp
First time at Rockys, and had a good experience! The service here is top-notch. We were greeted the moment we walked in and sat at the bar. There were a total of three people behind the bar, and each of them worked with us, but the one guy who was assigned to us was extremely helpful. Menu is simple and I love it. Basically do you want a burger with her without cheese on the burger you can tell they use 80/20 ground beef. It's your basic burger with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, with a spread of mayo. Pickles on the side! Burger comes out hot with hot fries. Choose a 1/3 or 1/2 lb. burger honestly I couldn't tell the difference between sizes. Only suggestion would be the burger could've used more seasoning, but a good burger! I was off work on Monday afternoon and went around 12:30. It was really busy! Overall good places to grab a burger and a beer.

I don't like leaving bad reviews but last night was a terrible experience, we sat down at the bar the bartender took our order, we ordered the two 1/2 pound burgers and two orders of fries after waitting for almost an hour we asked about our food, the guy had lost our ticket so they rushed into getting our burgers took another 10-15 min they send a really small burger and one order of fries when i asked the server (the guy with the long hair that thinks he is doing you a favor, BTW he is a terrible server) if that was the 1/2 pound burger he said; i didn't take your order and walked away, man you work at the place and you don't know how your food look like that's bad, terrible service and the burger was less than average, all that being said i will never go back to that place.
