A Guide to New York's Financial District

"New to the neighborhood but already one of the liveliest spots in FiDi, I watched crowds toss back Aussie beers, gawk at towering Australian patrons, and dance to DJ sets — a rowdy, buzzy addition from the team behind Chinese Tuxedo and Bluestone Lane." - Sophie Mendel

Old Mates Pub - Review - South Street Seaport - New York - The Infatuation

"Old Mates Pub is an Australian bar serving Australian lager and meat pies to a crowd of many Australians. If you keep track of every new hot bar opening in New York—or maybe that’s just us—you might remember this place as being the three-floor bar with lines (of Australians) out the door when it first opened. But since then, it’s calmed down a bit, which means there’s ample space for a table of coworkers, a few dates sharing burgers and beers, and groups of friends who crowd around the pool table in the back and guzzle beers in between rounds. If you want a real dive with a little more history and poorly functioning toilets, try nearby Jeremy’s Ale House. But for a fancier bar that has a dance floor, serves alcohol in real glassware, and has an ambient soundtrack made up almost exclusively of Australian accents, Old Mates Pub might just be the place for you." - Willa Moore

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"You’ve heard of Irish pubs and English pubs, but Old Mates in Seaport is an Australian-style pub. The monstrously huge space has housed various bars over the years. This time, there’s a menu full of pub food that incorporates Aussie meats, plus beers from Down Under." - will hartman, bryan kim

So I have been hearing about this spot since it started trending on tiktok and randomly stumbled upon it walking around near Seaport on a Sunday evening. The downstairs was lively and despite the tables being full the hostess was eager to find us a table upstairs so our group of 4 could be accommodated immediately. We were also greeted by an Australian host while we waited and he was quite friendly. We all enjoyed the old mates lager which was classic and crisp, and each dish we ordered was uniquely flavored and freshly made including the burger, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and grilled barramundi. The chippies aka fries also deserve a shoutout for their fun chicken salt seasoning. All of us were really happy with our orders and eager to visit again. While I can’t speak to the authenticity of this Australian pub, I can say the atmosphere is inviting and a great space to casually catch up with friends or watch a game

Food: the burger is definitely a top 5 New York burger. Worth a visit for sure. cheeseburger: amazing! AZ burger: just felt like too much was happening. Delicious, but the reg burger was better. Sept 2025: the mustard has improved!!! May 2025: I asked for a side of mustard and it was awful. Service is immaculate. The staff was so incredibly sweet and the vibes were awesome. Atmosphere: My only beef with this place is that it's not a great place to actually watch sports. The ceilings are too low and as a result so are the TVs, which means if you're not directly in front of the TV, you can't see the screen.

It’s great to see this space open after sitting vacant for what feels like over a decade. Very friendly service. Outdoor space indoor and an upstairs. I didn’t checkout upstairs but the first floor is huge and has lots of light on a nice spring day. The beers were some of the coldest on draft I have ever had which was great and gives me another reason to come back on hot days. The food was delicious. I only had the chicken Parma and it was very good. It tasted a little salty compared to what you get in Italian restaurants but I like salty foods so to me this was great. The Aussie burger looked amazing. Not going to lie the prices were a little high but you won’t be disappointed.

Food – Only tried the fries and fish tartare. Fries were crispy and spot-on, but the tartare was overly fishy and not something I’d recommend. Vibe – Went on a Saturday night around 9pm and the line to get in was super long. The place itself is pretty big with multiple rooms to explore, and there’s even upstairs seating for those dining. The crowd skewed very young—mostly 20-somethings—so it felt a bit off for me. Probably worth checking out earlier in the day for a different scene, but overall a lively, fun atmosphere if you’re into the nightlife vibe.

Google
Awesome pub at the Seaport! Really chill vibe, multiple floors, and great outdoor seating. You MUST get the cheeseburger 🍔- might be one of the best I’ve had in NYC. Ask if they have the Milo sundae and treat yourself.

Google
Great food! Great service! Great vibe! I reckon this place will do well and it deserves to! The barramundi and tomato fennel salad were delightful - fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and very flavorful. I’d definitely return!

Google
Started with the seafood linguine, which was so fresh I think one of the shrimp made eye contact. This was my boyfriends entree and I almost ate it all. The heirloom tomato salad with basil oil and harissa was a vibrant, juicy love letter to summer. And the steak tartare? Let’s just say if it proposed, I’d say yes. Love how it had little fried capers. He ordered this after I ate his pasta. Now, the Bloody Marys, what a star. Made with beet vodka which was so nice you felt like you were almost drinking a healthy drink, but no it's still vodka. They were delightfully thin (I hate thick bloody marys that are soups). I put down a couple. 10/10 would return and aggressively recommend to everyone I know. Old Mate’s is officially the best new Aussie restaurant in NYC

Google
They have a gluten free beer on tap that is so good and a dedicated fryer so they can make most of their menu celiac safe! It’s amazing as a celiac to have options!

Yelp
What's not to love about an Aussie pub! This is a true ny-take on an Aussie classic which is perfect if you're feeling like a taste of down under. Memorabilia on the walls will remind you of Aussie classics from movies TV and books or media. The TVs are always playing the footy. And you're guaranteed to hear an Aussie accent. The menu features some great classics. Including Bourke St bakery pies and sausage rolls. They also have an Aussie burger with "the lot" - i.e . Beetroot, pineapple and a fried egg. Chicken schnitzel and Parma, bangers and mash, and hot chips with chicken salt and wedges with sour cream and chilli. They have recently introduced a Sunday Roast with lamb, chicken or squash, served with crispy potatoes, veggies and a Yorkshire pudding. Trivia on Tuesdays is also a fun event! When they first opened it was really packed so you would often have to wait in line. It's settled back into a nice rhythm now.

Yelp
Destination authentic Aussie Bar for 30 somethings is as good of a time as you can have. We were 7 people on a Tuesday night and it was pretty damn fun. The food and service we had was excellent. Chicken Parma Calamari burger was good buffalo cauliflower was stupid All in all it was a great time.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic in every way. Huge bar. Great beers. PERFECT food. The chicken salt on the fries...best I've ever had. A cracking good time all around. This place is loud, like can't hear your mates loud, and the crowd is young. But Old Mates definitely lives up to the title of best new bar in the city. Bartenders are hot.

Yelp
Met up with a friend here and it was such a fun time! Devin G, a bartender there, was so sweet and was super lovely to talk to. Quiet but a very spacious pub that is the perfect HH meet up/early bites grab.

Yelp
Bloody fantastic! Really enjoyed the authentic atmosphere and the familiar range of Australian pub meals. Service was very friendly and while there was a line to get in, we were able to get inside fairly quickly (20 minute wait) and even get a table in the dining room upstairs. There is an impressive list of Australian wines and spirits. It's the real deal.

Yelp
I had a particularly bad experience here, where after commenting casually to another patron that the service was a bit slow I was kicked out. Other patrons (whom I did not know) actually intervened to tell staff that I'd done nothing wrong, but to no avail. I've had much more positive experiences at nearby pubs like Ulysses, TJ Byrnes, and Ryan Maguires which I would heartily recommend instead, and I will be telling my Australian friends not to come here if they visit.

Yelp
I came here with a colleague for dinner. The menu posted outside piqued our interest, but the place was extremely lively upon entering. There are several floors, and we went to the second level. We went on a Friday, and it was around 7:00 pm. It was super crowded, so I was surprised that we were even able to snag a table. Once seated, we order cauliflower bites. These were tasty but really hot (temperature). For our entrees, I ordered the fish and chips, and she ordered the seafood linguine. We both enjoyed our meals. I know my fish was piping hot--I'm pretty sure I burnt my tongue. Old Mates definitely doesn't serve lukewarm food. It's a cool spot, but it can get very crowded. The service was good, no complaints there. Old Mates is worth checking out.

Yelp
New, nicely setup authentic Aussie pub! Food was excellent. Meat pies were outstanding and the best deal on the menu ($14 each, super flavorful and filling). The fish tartare was beautiful, delicious, and great for a lighter pub option. Honey carrots were like candy. Showed up at 3pm for a late lunch, not realizing they were not open for lunch on weekdays. The staff was super nice to my daughters, offering them to use the bathroom and being very apologetic. Thankfully, there's a lovely little playground across the street, so we spent 45 minutes there and then returned. They sat us before 4pm opening time, which was above and beyond. Food came out fast for the hungry kiddos. It's right across from Pier 17, my favorite NYC summer concert venue. Will be back before shows and can't wait to try more of the menu.

Yelp
I came here on a Thursday night to grab a drink. Wow, it was packed! Lots of finance bros. Nice bartenders, but not necessarily cheap.
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
This was not the vibe, IMO. Although the bar is massive, it was packed, loud, and full of people who looked wildly young. I came with a large group of people and we left pretty quickly.
google avatar

Daniella G.

Yelp
I loved this place! It's way bigger than I expected--more than one floor and full of surprises. I didn't know what to expect from an "Australian pub," but I had a ton of fun. The oysters and burgers were both really unique and super tasty. Great vibes, good drinks, and a fun crowd. The place was absolutely packed when I went (way more than I expected), but somehow it was still easy to grab a table. Service was a bit confusing, but I went during their first week open, so I totally get they were still ironing things out. The staff was friendly, and the overall atmosphere made up for any hiccups. Can't wait for it to warm up so I can hang out on the outdoor seating!

Yelp
The space just like when it was Trading Post is three floors. They put a bar on the second floor, which was a great idea so you have used through the window windows of the South Seaport. I wasn't overly crazy about the menu, but it was limited the bigger menu wasn't available when I was there so maybe it has a more interesting selection. I just had the prawns which were very good and fresh. Brock Quinn the entire staff was very friendly, which gave you a more of a local flavor which is what the south seaport area in general gives you I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Ladies, sons of ladies and everyone in between. Let me start this off by saying I'm my soul, and by my roommates permission I have been declared an honorary Aussie. If you disagree I mean no disrespect, I didn't choose this life it chose me. Old mates pub is exactly that. A family I didn't know I needed to be part of, a community of stunning humans and some FIRE FOOD! We sat upstairs where the vibes were chill but made our way down to the bar to be in the hustle and bustle of a TwoUp Tournament I chose the perfect day the Anzac Game day. Honoring all those who have served in the Australian and New Zealand army corps *slay*. I had a Rekotderlig to start my meal and finished it with Brussel Sprouts that GENUINELY MELTED IN MY MOUTH. I wasn't mad. But was sooooo disappointed when I looked down at my plate and my meal... was finished. I vacuumed that sucker down and I have no regrets. I think it's safe to say that this is going to be my local pub... and I live in Jersey so you know I mean it

Yelp
Absolutely insane. The owner is an insecure manic with an ego problem. I was in the club. Having an OK time. Spent $300 on a few drinks and a burger, and then when I went down to their dance floor this ridiculous jerk runs out of the back and starts harassing me because I'm close to a TV that they had on the wall. He kicked me out of the club straight away "time to leave. Time to leave. You're slapping my TV time to leave." Completely Ludacris. There is absolutely no world in which I'm abusing this man's electronics. I tried to talk to him about it. I'm a technician and I work with electronics for a living. His ego issue completely ruined my night. They kicked me out of the club. After spending over $300 personally (and I was with a large group) They ruined my evening. He's an irrational behavior was completely inappropriate and embarrassing for both me and himself.

Yelp
Was it the best parmi and Pavlova I've ever had? No, but it wasn't bad. The parmi, chicken salted chips, all the Aussies and kiwis, the triple j hottest 100 playing... it all had me craving home.

Yelp
Easy seating and great location but the indifference (entitlement??) of our waitress (thin blonde) was noticeable. Response to every question was curt: Water- over there. Ranch? No. Lettuce on burger- No (actually there is). Bloody Mary? -No. Service starts with offering suggestions and guiding the customer, no but you could consider X. Food: burgers were quality, recommended! Kids pasta drenched in butter, gross. Yea, I still tipped solid but ya all still going to get the feedback. Cheers Mate!

Yelp
Came here and sat at the bar, food and drinks were good but when the bill came they had the wrong drinks on it. Not a big deal but it was a pain for them to fix it, and then when I credit card bill came I noticed they doubled charged me as well. Overall, good food and drinks but watch your bill.

Yelp
It is almost impossible to find a cold beer with good head in NYC. Old Mates finally fills the void. We went as a group of four on a Friday night and it was pumping. We managed to jump on to a high top with two other customers. Although super busy the food came our quick. New York prices but worth it if you like good beer and Parmis

Austin L.

Yelp
Very scenery / nice folk / hot people but pretty annoying place to hang out / good Guinness

Yelp
Went for the Knicks game last weekend and had a great time! Food was pretty good, it's def bar food but it was really good! Ambiance was 10/10 for what we wanted, and service / staff was great. It does get pretty backed for games, which could be great or not depending on what you're looking for!

Yelp
An Aussie pub brought to life in the City - the vibes are fantastic, the drinks/beer menu/food are all great. The servers and bartenders are friendly and accommodating. It's worth a trek to check it out. Been once and will hopefully be back many times in the future.

Yelp
Best Pub in New York. The service is top tier, will be back without a doubt. Shoutout Clippers legend Patty Mills who's part owner!

Yelp
No Sunday roast green menu only I was duped I want the place to do well ............. Menu was suspect didn't even have fries

Chris H.

Yelp
The Asian bartender is hot and makes the best cocktails. Please tip this is not Australia this is new York.

Kevin B.

Yelp
The music is terrible here and so is the staff. If you want bartenders to disrespect you come here
