Like all dim sum spots, the kitchen at Sun Kong excels at some dishes while others fell a little flat. I'm tempted to give Sun Kong five stars on the sheer excellence of their tofu pudding. It can also be called Douhua, Doufuhua, or a long list of other names. Regardless of its name, this is one of my favorite dim sum treats, and it can be surprisingly difficult to find... especially in the midwest. Here, the server masterfully scooped out large silky petals from the cauldron of steaming hot custardy tofu into waiting bowls. It was gorgeous. On the flip side the char siu pork that filled the steamed and baked pork buns was on the mushy side. My kids love pork buns, but on future visits we will skip these entirely. But that is fine, because there were so many other tasty treats available. The dark horse was the Chau Chau Style Dumpling. These thicker skinned steamed dumplings were a textural delight, and definitely earned a spot on the table for a return trip, as did the Fried Dough Rice Rolls and Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice with Chicken. My pro tip, like all good dim sum places, is to arrive early. And by early, I mean when they open. Parking is tight, but we were able to walk right in and grab a table without any wait. That meant, we could relax with our first pot of tea and consider which plates we would select on the paper menu. I did have to ask about the tofu pudding as we had received everything from our original order, and were sitting around patiently waiting for this important dish to arrive. It just takes time to make, and the staff did a fine job at keeping our teapot filled until the cauldron was ready. Which, could be an argument for arriving a little later in the morning, but that comes with a different set of challenges. So glad to have made a stop into Sun Kong and look forward to exploring more of their menu down the road.

The dim sum was not fresh and tasted like leftovers. The prices are not cheap, and they do not provide itemized receipts when calculating your total. This practice makes it difficult to know if you are being overcharged or if there are miscalculations. The manager stood in front of our table, and the waiters walked by without acknowledging our need for water refill. They seemed to ignore us completely. We visited this restaurant based on online recommendations, but our experience was very disappointing. Do not go there!

You know... I have to say I am just honestly not a fan at all. Came here recently to meet with some relatives that I have not seen in a while and they suggested to come here to eat. I have not been to Sun Kong in about ten years? I have not been here since I was in middle school but this place has not really changed much. The food is still not great and service was extremely slow, even though we were the only table they had at the time. I found that most of the dishes we ordered were bland and warmish-cold. The food also did not go down well and my stomach was incredibly upset. There are better places in the area for Chinese food. Even Ming's down the street.

We came to try the dim sum per friends' recommendations. The food tasted great and did not disappoint us. We specially liked chicken feet, egg tart, steamed rice roll with shrimp, and steamed rice roll with fried crullers. The steamed pork ribs with black beans was kind of mediocre. Half of the dish was taro instead of pork ribs, not what we expected and not the same as other places. One point was deducted due to the extreme slow service of Shanghai soup dumplings and lack of service. When we were done with our meal, the Shanghai soup dumplings still did not show up. We had to wait for another 15min for it but eventually gave up...... The parking was another pain. We came early when half of the restaurant was empty. we were seated immediately, but the parking lot was full and we had to park many blocks away off street. The parking spots do not seem to match the number of tables and seats inside.

This is 1 out of 2 place left that I know serves dim sum in Malden. When I lived here few years ago, there were 3 places. On weekends there's usually long wait. We came on a weekday afternoon, was decently busy still, but didn't wait long. The food tasted fresh, but I was super disappointed because they didn't give me couple items from my order. All the food came out and I sat and waited for my sweet tofu and baked pork bun, but by the time we were done eating, still nothing. I didn't feel like asking and having to wait longer so we left. I do wish I had my sweet tofu.

We frequent this restaurant for dim sum. Some dishes are great and some are sub par but it certainly scratches the itch for a dim sum craving. The waitstaff is nice, I feel most reviews are negative due to a language barrier but it's not an accurate reflection of the service. The restaurant itself is very large with lots of tables but still expect a wait.

Maybe it's me but I didn't really enjoy my dim sum experience here. Went with my little sister Sunday morning. Wasn't busy at all. Service right from the beginning was already horrible lol I know they're used to serving older Asian folks but I wasn't greeted or offered tea/water like the rest of them lol was totally ignored for 5 minutes until I waved at a waiter to be seated. Once seated, I had to ask for EVERYTHING. Not overreacting at all. I had to ask for the menu, water/tea, and sauces. Anyways. Food - shrimp noodle was over cooked so everything was falling apart when picking it up. Shu Mai was also overcooked because the outer layer was mushy. Chicken feet was bland. Spareribs was actually decent because I like how they cook it with taro. Overall, definitely not coming back (was in the area for errands). It's rare for me to give bad reviews lol no disrespect to the other reviewers but in my opinion, you haven't had good dim sum if you think this place is AMAZING lol

My party of seven got dim sum - TASTE: 4/5 - decent spot. Highlights included classics like pork siu mai, turnip cake, and roast pork w cilantro rice rolls TEXTURE: 4/5 - wish the fried dough in the fried dough rice rolls was more fresh. Loved the crab claw: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside PRICE: 4/5 - each of us ended up paying $33 SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - good for lunch/brunch. There are a few more items, like salt and pepper squid, available 11am onward SERVICE: 4/5 - walked in at 10am on a Saturday and there were still plenty of tables open; our entire group hadn't arrived yet, but we were seated at a large table right away. We ordered from the dim sum menu; I think they had carts pre-covid. Very solid spot for dimsum - if you're in the mood for an authentic experience, this is definitely the spot to come to! We came on a Sunday at around noon the place was pretty busy - I have no idea how long the wait was as we ended up sharing a table with two other parties, but in hindsight, this was probably the right move to avoid waiting for too long. The place feels like a traditional Chinese restaurant and also is super bustling - definitely a lively spot,a Service was pretty quick and efficient with ordering, getting our food out, and drinks. Their portions are a little better than other dimsum options in Boston I think, like getting two rices wrapped in lotus leaves for one order was surprising but awesome. I would say they did a good job with most dishes other than the soup dumplings - definitely wouldn't recommend those. They ended up forgetting some of our last dishes, but in the end we were so full that we didn't need it. Overall, I definitely would come back if I'm in the area again and craving dimsum. Not the best dim sum I've ever had, but it's the best I've had in the Boston area. A bonus is that there is a ton of street parking around. This place STAYS busy, and there's a very good reason for that. I will be back

I thought I submitted my review for this place a long time ago, and it looks like it was in draft status. Anyhow, my family and I have been going to Sun Kong for years and their quality has remained consistent. The restaurant itself is conveniently located down the street from Malden Center. They have 2 parking lots on either side of the restaurant, as well as a few spots right up front. If you go during a weekend morning/afternoon, you WILL absolutely have to wait in line and fight for a parking spot. This place is popular! Food is amazing here. Very well seasoned food, good selection and friendly service. They have a bar (which I've never tried) and 2 dining rooms. Their dim sum is extremely popular, but their lunch/dinners are also very good! Anyone looking for good eats in Malden must try this place! I like Sun kong more than Mings.

Overall: one of the best dim sum places in the Boston area this place has it all. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because the service was stereotypically bad. Ambience/Decor/Service: i put this first because of the few issues. 1) no one at the front to collect names as all the Asian aunties/uncles cut each other to be "first" 2) no designated waiter/waitress so when we put an extra order in it got lost in all the translation 3) the design of the place maximizes large tables/ groups (8+) and leaves the rest of the 4 and below groups like ourselves waiting incredibly long. Food: when it comes to the staples this place rocks them all. Authentic (compared to the best of LA) Siu Mai, Har Gow, Chicken Feet, and egg yolk bun emphasize the taste and texture over the looks. The lesser know staples like radish/turnip cakes, pork spare ribs were a little more to be desired. Nonetheless very homely feel.

Would love to come back. You can park in their lot but it gets crowded so you may need to go nearby to parallel park on the streets. It's so worth the wait. Being friends so you can try tons of food. It's sosososoosso good. Sun Kong is further validation that all good real Asian food is only capable of 3.5 stars on Yelp.

The foods are really average. The texture of the beef balls are really fluffy. The taste is ok. All other dim sums are about the same as other dim sum restaurants. The service is really not that great. I originally placed my order for takeout thinking that there would be a long wait. However the waiter told me to have a seat and eat at the restaurant. I agreed with him. We sat down and waited for at least another five minutes without any waitress serving us. The ambience is ok. We sat near the exit door. We were able to get a seat as I was waiting for my takeout.

Delicious food, everything we had was good. Would recommend the steamed pork ribs (of any sort), beef congee, egg tarts (so flaky, just enough sweetness), and chicken feet. Also enjoyed the stuffed eggplant, pork buns, sesame balls, and soft tofu. The soft tofu comes with a gingery sweet soup that you can add to adjust the flavoring. It's VERY soft, goes down easy and delicious. We ordered about 14 dishes and it came out to less than $100 with tax (tip not included yet), which is honestly way more reasonable than I thought. Service was pretty quick, there were a lot of waiters around and everyone was masked. This placed did get packed quickly though and the parking was a bit of a challenge even though there's multiple street parking areas AND a parking lot. This place is popular to say the least. Overall kind of a hectic place to eat, be prepared to talk loudly and not let other people try to cut in line. Maybe drop a person off to get in line while you park lol

Best dim sum place in Boston! So authentic and this is the first place I think of when I think about going to eat dim sum in Boston. Also it's proximity to Boda Borg make it a great place to eat after questing away for a couple hours! A Hidden tip is it you should order the salted egg yolk custard buns! the inside is a little savory with the salted egg yolk custard, however when it's fresh and hot, the custard uses out and it tastes so good with the balance of sweet and salty! I expect a bit of a wait here whenever I come at a popular hour but if the wait is under 30 or 40 minutes, it's definitely worth it to me!

Came for dinner with my boyfriend and parents on a Sunday around 5:30pm. It was still early for dinner so lots of tables were available and our waiter came quickly. They were patient and knowledgeable with the menu as my dad ordered for the table. The General gao's chicken was our least favorite as it felt like a mix of batter and chicken, and not chicken battered. We dissected a few pieces and had trouble finding actual chicken. The frog was well seasoned but the pot had more garlic than actual meat pieces. We got two veggies dishes but they felt overly oily. The beef and peppers was tender and my favorite dish of the table, but overall the mean was subpar. The restaurant did get busier as we dined, so aim for an earlier dinner if you don't want to have to wait long. There's street parking right in front but also a small parking lot right before the restaurant/to the right of the restaurant.

This has been my go to Chinese restaurant ever since I was little. The quality has definitely stayed consistent and if not it has been progressively improving. Very fast service and quality food! This is my first time trying fried flounder because it was a special occasion. It is definitely a delicacy food and it was super delicious! They cut up the belly and steamed in so the meat is smooth and silky, and they topped with Chinese brocolli in white garlic sauce. With the rest of the fish they fried it so you get a nice contrast of silky fish meat and fried fish skin. Overall, this is the best Chinese restaurant in Malden. Everybody knows this is the og spot to go to!

Came in for the dim sum on a Saturday afternoon. We were relatively on the earlier side, like 11:30AM, and were quite lucky to be able to snag a spot by the window. We quickly compiled our order on the paper dim sum menu they provided and as usual our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We ordered about 10 dishes that came out to be ~$60. The shrimp with leek and chive dumplings were notable, the cha siu sou was also particularly tasty. Don't get me wrong - everything was really delicious. The order came out at a reasonable pace, about 4 dishes after 10 mins of ordering, then the next 5 dishes. The congee and fried dough took a very long time and came out last at the very end and by then we were quite full from the rest of the small plates, I probably would have preferred if it actually came out first but alas. tldr; come here for dim sum

We came Saturday at 12:30 pm for dimsum as a group of 5 and were surprised to be seated immediately. Service was a bit brusque, but efficient. They gave us the a sheet menu to mark down our order and a picture menu version with a subset. The sheet menu v classic carts provides the trade off of having your desired dishes freshly prepared (great for dumplings) v being able to pick and choose your dishes throughout the meal. We had the shrimp dumplings, shumai, egg yolk buns, vegetable rice rolls, fried dough rice rolls, taro dumplings, soft tofu, pork dumplings, sesame balls, lotus leaf chicken and ended up ordering way too much (we left with 6+ small boxes), so I would recommend the strategy of ordering less and adding to your order later. The shumai was so soft and juicy and, in general, I liked all of the dumplings. As a reminder, dimsum is not a great place to take your vegetarian friends (from our dishes, they were only able to have the dessert items and rice rolls) and most pescatarian dishes use shrimp (for those who are allergic to shrimp).

Definitely go if you want dim sum and you are north of downtown. That being said, it's a typical bustling dim sum operation in terms of food and ambience. Nothing fancy. Very convenient to have a good, authentic dim sum without having to drive to or south of Chinatown. For people accustomed to regular restaurants, service may seem hard to get, but it's actually faster and more attentive here than average for this kind of restaurant. Staff is very good, and we had an older guy covering our table who was excellent. Plenty of help around, though, as usual in a dim sum restaurant, you need to flag it down. But I found they were watching out for customers in need of service and provided it with a sense of urgency and responsibility. One factor in timing is that although you order off a menu and a cart comes to you with your order, the kitchen still works like a regular dim sum restaurant in that it makes dishes in batches. If what you ordered is sold out, you will need to wait for the next batch. Same is true in a regular dim sum restaurant. Here, they bring you your cart quickly with what is available and then will send other dishes from your order as those become available. Food tasted very good. People will find favorites on the menu and fault with other items, but nothing I tried was less than very good. My one request would be to get the food to the table warmer. Of course, fresh batches came out nice and hot. But many of the standard "first cart" items were not as warm as I would have preferred. Maybe it's just me.

Dim sum is probably one of the most authentic Chinese cuisines Massachusetts has to offer. Sun Kong is in the top list of dim sum restaurants. I remembered they used to have the small food carts that stacked with dim sum to go around tables for customers to pick before covid. This is even rarely seen in Canton, except in old dim sum restaurants. Those carts simply used to deliver foods nows, what a pity. But glad that foods still taste the same! I highly recommend chicken feet with black bean sauce. It was fried before steamed so it's chewy and soft.

Sun Kong is good for dim sum, and I don't have to go into the city for it anymore. It used to have push carts but everything is ordered on a paper now, during Covid. It's always fast and food is good. There is parking, on both sides of the building and very limited street parking in the front, but it can get busy on the weekends for dim sum where you may not be lucky enough to park there. If it's busy for dim sum, you need to take a number and wait to be called.

Really enjoyed the food here. Parking is available on both sides of the building and if you don't get here early, it will be hard to find a spot. Looking at other reviews and ask the talk about cleanliness, I was very worried about finding bug remains in my food. But thankfully, I did not find any. Because I was thinking that the entire time, it really decreased how much I got to enjoy this place by constantly worrying about creepy critters. I truly hope they build their reputation backup.

We came to Sun Kong for dinner and got a bunch of dishes to share family style. The Mayo shrimp was delicious and the walnuts were a nice addition. The shrimp was plump and the sweet sauce was very nice. The chicken wings were very crispy and this dish came in a very large portion. It had nice seasoning on it as well. The scallop fried rice was a very classic dish. The flavors were mild but perfect for pairing with out other dishes. The beef Lo Mein was definitely a favorite. Unlike many other places, the noodles were not as oily but still retained a great texture and delicious flavor. We got the clam dish with vermicelli noodles. This dish was also very tasty but the noodles did clump up a bit. Overall, Sun Kong is a great place to have some delicious Chinese food and we will definitely be back for more!

Solid dim sum. Everything from the steam carts was hot and fresh. The fried stuff in the carts were cold. We usually try the house special fried rice or panfried noodles to get a sense of the wok and the chef. The technique on the noodles was excellent, but not much wok he. Prices are relatively inexpensive and definitely worth a try.

This is the 9th place I have gone to for Dim Sum in the greater Boston area. In short, I would not go back. The food was mediocre but the service was awful. The crab claws were ice cold. We ordered a mussel dish which was not available until 11:30am (we were there at 10am) and we were charged for it but never got the dish... All in all, not worth the trip or the effort. If you are going for Dim Sum in Malden, Go to Ming's Seafood.

Sun Kong is an authentic Chinese food restaurant providing decent portions at fair prices. The food itself is pretty average and is comparable to Ming's right around the corner. There is plenty of parking on both sides of the building and on the street, however, it can get pretty busy on the weekends for dim sum. Service tends to be quite slow and inattentive, even on quiet days, but the food always comes out nice and hot. It's been a few years since we last ate at Sun Kong for Din Sun and we decided that 2 years was enough time to go with fresh and open minds. I think the last time we went I would have given them 3 stars but our experience shows that they have improved and we gave them 4 stars this time - was there a change in chefs over this time? We ordered Crispy Egg Custard, Shoo Mai, Shrimp Dumpling, RoSt Pork Rice Roll, Fried Crab Claw and Malaysian Style Sponge Cake. All of it was served fresh and hot! Honestly, the only bad part of Dim Sun was trying to get parking.

.If you are looking for a spot to satisfy your Dimsum craving, look no further. Sun kong in Malden has always been on my list (Pre-covid) , I finally got to try it a couple days ago and I loved everything, especially the Cantonese classic dishes stir-fried rice noodle with beef (干炒牛河) and shrimp dumplings (虾饺). If Dine-in is nerve racking for you (I am) given the current situation, you can rest at ease ordering from these two places. This place has transformed to take out only and pick up is simple with safety measurement taken into consideration. Everything we ordered: -Spare Ribs -Shrimp Dumpling -Steamed Beef Tripe -Fried dough rice rolls -Steamed pork with soy bean skin rolls -Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Beef

Came here a couple of years before the pandemic and had a good impression. Came again today for dim sum and am very disappointed! Many of the dishes we ordered were poorly prepared which really surprised me. Maybe it is because today is a weekday? The 皮蛋瘦肉粥 was thick with very little egg or meat; the 油条 was not crispy and not fresh; etc.etc. But the serving staff was friendly and pleasant.

Food is quick and decent dim sum place. I would come here when I don't feel like waiting in line at Ming's Seafood! Overall, great dim sum place!

I probably come here few times a month for dimsum. It's great and they have a parking lot on both sides of the restaurant and also street parking. If you come on weekends, arrive before 10/11am, or there's a line. The wait it not long, but it gets me anxious and hangry. But if you like, their takeout is just as good! It's a bit of a wait but you can eat at the comfort of your home too. Dishes range between $3-5 each. Best Chinese tapas. Few items I always get: (Cantonese translation) - shrimp rice noodles (Ha cheurng) - pork dumplings (siu mai) - salted egg yolk custard buns (lao xia bo lo bao) - shrimp dumplings (Ha gao) Some items that are slightly unique: - taro dumplings - fish dumplings - fried shrimp bean curd roll - spare ribs Also sip as many pots of tea as you like! Have the full dimsum experience with the carts being pushed around.
