Belle Isle Pizza in Detroit Has Been Sold to New Ownership | Eater Detroit

"A West Village takeout eatery that launched on the east side in 2015 in an 800-square-foot space formerly occupied by Garalino’s, Belle Isle Pizza began slinging its signature Detroit-style pies nearly eight years ago and has been praised by locals for its fresh ingredients, high-quality crusts, and friendly, neighborhood vibes. Two weeks ago John Kwiatkowski, a partner with the Detroit Optimist Society who runs several properties, closed a deal to take over operations from outgoing owner Leor Barak (who will remain the property owner). Kwiatkowski says much will remain the same, but he plans light renovations, to streamline the pizza-making process, and to market the spot to attract a new wave of loyalists; he hopes to use his experience running other local venues to remind the neighborhood of the spot’s greatness. We moved recently to the downtown area and have been meaning to stop by. My fiance loves pizza but I’ve never been one to care for it like that. Being a detroiter I have never had true deep dish it was amazing I enjoyed every bit. He loved the Stromboli it was massive especially for the price. When we first came in one of the cooks came to the window laughing and playing saying we won't let him get a break, can he please get a break? Now tonus this was funny and I laughed and said make sure that man gets a break. Now I got my food and it's clear he needed a break before making the order. First refer to the pinned pictures to see the sandwich I was sold. Half the bread had been smooshed or something so none of the items inside were on that end of the bum, all bunched up to one side..... how did that even happen to the bread, I'm so confused. Anywho, we were quoted 25 minutes. When we come in the sub and wings are done but we wait an additional 9 minutes for the SALAD! Why make the salad last so our hot food can sit an extra 9 minutes to get COLD!!!! HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?!!!!! So we have to warm up food we literally just brought. I just want hot, good food when I pay my hard earned money for it

Ordered 5 pizzas detroit style: cheese, bbq, spinach artichoke, lady in white, 7 villages. We also asked for a mix of garlic and parmesan crusts on the pizza, but I believe they forgot to do that as the crusts all looked and tasted the same to us. Order took 40 minutes and they came out hot and fresh. The crust is FANTASTIC. Chewy with perfectly crisp edges and bottom. The cheese pizza was very good, I just wish the sauce was a touch sweeter. The bbq was my least favorite; the bbq sauce flavor doesn’t really shine because it’s mixed with ricotta so that kind of “waters down” the flavor. The lady in white is ok, nothing to write home about honestly. The spinach artichoke was perfect, all you need to do is add pepper flakes or jalapenos if you can take spice. The 7 villages was also perfect. The mushrooms had a delicious roasted flavor and the arugula helped cut the richness of the pizza.

The hand tossed round pizza was okay, but nothing mind blowing. As far as taste, I compared it to a *slightly* better tasting Papa John's, especially in the sauce, but realize that's not setting a high bar. The pricepoint for the pizza is pretty good, though, as a large 1 topping will run you about $15-16, or one of the signatures will be $18. Get that and a side and you're looking at around ~$20-$25 and if you're splitting it, it's not too bad for a decently cheap movie night with a slightly-above-chain-tier pizza.

Unfortunately I can't leave a good review. I've attempted to order 3 times within the last 3 weeks in which they aren't open and it's business hours. I will say the 1 time they were actually open the pizza I have was really great. Really fresh. Maybe they need better management not sure but hope everything works out out.

Belle Isle Pizza is delicious and dependable. I haven't gotten a bad pizza yet, and the price is perfect. If I ever have leftovers, I throw them I. The freezer & then reheat them in my air fryer for crispy goodness. And the people are always nice- whether it's the delivery drivers or the folks behind the window.

Yesterday I ordered a pizza, was told 45 min wait time. I wait near door and time passes, and I noticed a missed call from unknown number. I call number and its the pizza driver, who is owner, telling me he's been outside for over an hour trying to reach me. I tell him thats not true, he proceeds to tell me I am now added to the do not serve list because I take too long to open the door. Now for context, I have been ordering food from Belle Isle pizza from when they first opened 5 or 6 years ago. The original owner, was engaging, friendly and a nice guy. Pizza was amazing. It reminded you of pizza from NYC, thin crust, with amazing sauce. Original owner sold business to new comer who definitely is not connected to the community. I will never order another pizza, and as of today I still have not received a refund from the pizza I did not get yesterday. Prior to yesterday, the last time I did have pizza from them, pizza was bland, crust over cooked and I only ate 2 slices. This new owner can't keep staff, and he is miserable. If you don't enjoy your job in the food industry it is reflective in the food!!!

Belle isle Pizza has provided excellent customer service and delicious food! I love their Detroit style deep dish pizzas and their cheesesteak sandwiches are soooo good! Recently, I ordered from them on the night of a snow storm which led to a power outage, leaving a longer than anticipated wait and a few errors in preparation. It was no big deal, but in the end, they gave me the entire order for free for the hassle which was a huge surprise and truly appreciated! Their food has always been delicious and well prepared. Highly recommended!!!

Last night weplaced an order and I got a deitalian dub, it was the worst thing I've ever gotten from there. It was dry..u asked for extra cheese I didn't hardly see the normal cheese. There was more bread than anything else. I'm totally disappointed!!!!!!

If you're not in the mood for jets, little caesars, or some other chain pizza, definitely visit Belle Isle Pizza. Their specialty pies are pretty great and their simple pepperoni is good too. The cheese has good flavor, but I'd like a bit more sauce. The pepperoni are a mix of old style and new - those grease cups are so crunchy and flavorful. I always call ahead, but they deliver in the area as well. Parking is free on Jefferson just outside. Inside is a little cramped since it's just a pick up spot but they're quick and polite.

We really love the fresh ingredients in the design your own, Detroit Deep Dish option. They are very close to us, and delivery by friendly drivers is usually less than an hour away. Feta, spinach and Italian sausage are our base ingredients and they have always been very fresh. I tried to do a walk-up order in on a Friday night last summer, they were so slammed that no-one could spare a minute to see what I wanted. I understood. I was not mad. I went home and ordered on their app and had my pie in 45 minutes. Strong recommendation from me.

I didn't realize how close Belle Isle Pizza was to my parents place. When we were scrambling to decide what to do for dinner, I decided to give BIP a try. I liked how you were able to order your pizza online. The website was pretty clear in the steps needed to order and there was plenty of comment sections to add any particulars that you need on your pizza. I was given a time of 30 minutes for the pie to be available. I walked over around that time and it was pretty much ready. The style did remind me of Jet's. I had pepperoni and mushroom added to our Detroit style pie. Overall it was good though I thought it could've used more mushrooms. Then again there is an option on the website to request extra so I'll have to remember to do that next time.

Belle Isle Pizza was amazing before they redid their recipes and reopened, now it's just another pizza place. Nain Rouge wings were the best in Detroit, the sauce lost its flavor and the meat itself was rubbery and under cooked. As for the pizza, crust is still good but what happened to the sauce? Before it was so present and full of flavor whereas the red stuff on the pizza I just ate was only there for visual effect. If the new management doesn't fix their mistakes we will be devolving back to Jets as our go to. 3 stars is probably generous but I am willing to err on the high side out of respect for what Belle Isle Pizza once was.

I've been a customer of Belle Isle pizza for years, buy with never do business with them again. I'm not sure if the young lady is new or what, but she made a mistake with my delivery order, and when I spoke to the manager he stated that I must have given her the wrong order. I ordered 2 12" steak and cheese and they delivered 2 12" Italian subs. He stated that there was no way she could have made a mistake and there was nothing he could do about it. They have make mistakes before and I've overlooked it. I couldn't overlook it this time, there's a a big difference between Italian and Steak and Cheese. I will never be back.

I ate my second pie from there today. The first time I got a cheese and mushroom round pie. The second I got the "Dearborn" deep dish. The cheese and mushroom for $13 was delicious and hit the spot. It was in the "very good" range. Great crust, fresh mushrooms (can tell they aren't canned or anything), solid sauce... I was pumped to buy another ASAP but this time Detroit deep-dish. Wifey doesn't like meat pies or pepperoni so we decided to go with one of the "neighborhood" pizzas. We chose the "Dearborn" because the idea sounds delicious. Unfortunately it isn't well executed, at least not this time. The chicken is dry. Too dry. Looks like ground beef. There is just something about this pizza that just falls flat. It's not bad, just "okay". Not something I would get again. For the same price, I could have had two of the delicious large rounds! We ordered online the second time which could be a convenience for some but it hits you with a $0.95 fee that isn't necessary. Next time I'll just run my card at the shop. I do look forward to trying other pies from BIP! Perhaps we can get back to 5 stars on the next one! Eyeing up the Mexicantown...

De-lish! My friends live nearby and this is their go-to pizza delivery spot. Their menu is pretty varied, especially the specialty pizzas, so go for something a bit out of the ordinary. We ended up with a few of the Detroit-style pizzas and we were really happy with what we got. The ingredient combos were great and there was a wide variety to choose from. The Dearborn was soooo good - it had schwarma on it! Schwarma! All of their specialty pizzas are named for neighborhoods in Detroit and they all reflect the ingredients of the cultures in those areas. I personally enjoyed the Mexicantown, too - my friends were skeptical but they enjoyed it, as well. Salad was a great accompaniment to all of the pizza we ate and the bill was pretty reasonable (definitely cheaper than getting Jet's in Chicago - and better, too). I can't wait to visit Detroit again to have some of this pizza again.

If you are downtown and you want Detroit style pizza that will rival the best Buddy's locations, you must try this place. They delivered to my hotel and it was hot, excellent flavor, and timely. I am a big fan of Detroit style and I have mixed reviews of Nickies downtown, but Belle Isle Pizza bled them away and I seriously can't wait to eat their pizza again.

Very convenient. They have coupons on the website you can use that are ok deals. I did large one topping for $10.50. I would give the pizza an 8 out of 10. I like the crust, and the mushrooms were fresh (not canned). Crust was the slightly crispy nice texture type. Sauce flavor is pretty mild nothing crazy or spicy. Crust seemed to have butter cheese flavor which was good, can't remember if thats how it comes or if you choose type of crust.

Love this spot. I've yet to have any of their basic offerings because i've been enticed time and time again by the neighborhood pizza descriptions. If you stop in for a slice they're fast but we usually call in and pick it up which works great. This is MY neighborhood pizza joint. We pass at least three other chain spots down E. Jefferson to reach Belle Isle. The owners are friendly, and really have a great neighborhood spirit. You can tell it is about more than the money for them. I believe they really want to make a difference in Detroit. That will earn my money every time. I have had the deep dish square, the round, as well as individual slices. All are great, and they offer a build your own menu, so that you get a pie just the way you want it. Their wings are also pretty tasty. I usually prefer the fried variety (theirs are baked), but they are great nonetheless. If you are in the area I would suggest you buy your pizza right here.

My neighbor pizza spot. I live in the Indian Village area. Take out order.. too cold to go out. A bit of a wait to place my order but the young lady was very professional and polite. I ordered a large Greek Salad...They accept credit cards for delivery. I was told 45 - 1 hour wait. I'll get back with how long it actually took. Well it took 28 minutes and was very good. A slept on gem, a diamond in the rough, I can't gush enough. I used to live in West Village (pre gentrification, I could never afford it now) and Belle Isle was always expeditious, efficient, and delicious, I could always count on a great meal! Once, I drunkenly ordered a small pie about an hour before they closed. When I arrived to pick up, the counter was deserted. After a few moments, an employee appeared from the back, clearly in the midst of those dreaded closing tasks. Once he had gathered my order info, he informed me that my pizza had been burnt, as the employees were closing shop for the evening and had forgotten about my wayward order (my words, not his) in the process. The employee took my name, phone number, and address, and promised me that they had a replacement pie in the oven for me and would deliver it free of charge. I only lived a block away and had walked to pick up, but still a sweet gesture, as he hadn't known that prior to asking. As promised, my perfected Supreme was delivered to my door in record time and free of charge along with the pizza they botched just in case I wanted to salvage it (I did). Wonderful, friendly service, consistent product, and a surprisingly extensive ingredient option list, I mean, what more could I ask for?

Excellent high quality ingredients yet affordable prices. I love how this place does something different yet respects the neighborhood. They are artesian quality without being obnoxious about it. They've only been open a short time and still figuring a few things out. Their deep dish is fantastic. If you like anchovies ask for the "Leor Special" it will not disappoint. Seriously the time they take on their pies sets them apart from the rest, from giving pizza extra time to rise to buttering the crust with real, herbed butter. You can taste the love! I look forward to trying all their signature pies and whenever I don't feel like being creative, you can't beat $1 slices. Love this place and excited to see an old joint brought back to life with a new twist. Bravo Belle Isle Pizza. Glad to have excellent pizza on the east side.
