The Restaurant Labor Market Has Never Recovered From COVID | Eater

"Co-owner Grace Glennon describes how hiring expectations and realities have diverged since the pandemic: "We’ve noticed new hires inflating their qualifications and demanding a higher starting wage," she says, adding, "Then when they get into the actual job, many of them clearly don’t have the requisite skills. I never saw that happen before COVID." - Adam Reiner

I’d Gladly Spend My Entire Day (and All My Money) at Afternoon Restaurant in Gainville | Bon Appétit

"Opened in fall 2017 as a refreshing addition to a neighborhood previously known mostly for a supermarket and drive-thru burgers, this sun-drenched café was founded by Grace Glennon and Kyle Spor after time living in Portland. Its thoughtful, curated aesthetic—beautiful tile work, handmade ceramics, a strong record selection, and an abundance of natural light—creates a mellow, sophisticated lunchtime oasis. The food focuses on seasonal, carefully prepared dishes, from a Dutch baby with Florida oranges and thyme maple syrup and shakshuka with homemade sourdough toast to cold-brew slushies and a rotating pastry case; a limited Friday–Saturday dinner service highlights farm-fresh produce and bright, citrusy cocktails. Overall, its variety, attention to detail, and welcoming atmosphere make it an ideal place to while away the day." - ByZoë Sessums

Google
Overall decent place, however this would for me be a take out place not a sit down and eat place. Let me explain that statement. Food was incredible, potatoes were so crispy and tender at the same time. Cinnamon roll was actually nicely frosted and sugar started caramelizing on the bottom which was great! My husband’s burrito was also great and my turkey club was filled with fresh ingredients and very generously lathered with sauce, bread was good too. When it somes to service and general feeling of the place is where “afternoon” falls behind. We were waiting to be seated/talked to for a while in the small entrance while people were trying to come in and out, our waitress was okay but she definitely entered our personal spaces every time she was there. Place is pricey, my husband’s late was $7.50, which is very steep for caramel, shot of espresso, and cup of milk. They also have a big fly problem, inside and outside which i thought was because of the nearby farms, however when i looked at the map, that was not the case. Bathrooms were decently clean. To sum it up food- delicious and fantastic, service, ambiance and vibe can use some work. P.S My ratings are based on whether I believe I could make a better or healthier version at home. If food/drinks/service impress me, I’ll be happy to come back. If not the stars reflect that.

The flavor of the food AND drinks here was truly amazing. The flavors were very impressive. The staff was very attentive and answered all questions regarding some fun menu names. Best matcha I’ve had in a while too!

I can’t recommend this place enough. We visited Afternoon on a game day so we knew it would be busy and we were able to get right in. The staff were all so friendly. The atmosphere was perfect and the food and coffee was amazing. I got the Americano with vanilla, they make their own coffee. For food my husband got the turkey club which you could taste each ingredient in it. All the flavors pair so well together. The best club we’ve ever had. And I got the breakfast burger. Absolutely amazing, we loved the jam on the burger made the perfect sweetness. The food was so refreshing and everything that went past us looked good. 10/10 recommend stopping here if in Gainesville

Edit: Didn’t want to hold a grudge so I returned a while after writing this review and can happily report that the service has gotten much better! I've been to Afternoon many times, but after nothing but disappointment every time, I will not be coming back for a long while. My biggest problem with Afternoon has always been the service. Whether it's at the pastry window, the counter or the table, I have consistently had a subpar, if not downright bad, experience. I've been left standing around waiting to check out or to get seated, as I was ignored by the staff, even when the restaurant was visibly not busy. I don't expect my waiters to be slap-happy about waiting my table, but when I walk away every time feeling like I was inconveniencing and annoying the staff despite pouring my own water and ordering once, something is wrong. Afternoon, you guys have a great business here, but the service has not gotten better in the 3 years I've been coming here. I reluctantly went back a few times because friends wanted to check the place out, and every time I hoped I was proven wrong, I was not. Please, either hire people who are actually good at customer service, or teach it to your staff.

I mean look at that lovely plate. Afternoon served up a tasty meal. I ordered the hash. The produce was so flavorful and delicious! The potatoes were out of this world crispy crunchy and the fresh dill was bountiful. The eggs were nearly perfect. My critique is this: I do think that the menu solicits this dish as having sautéed veggies and a brown butter hollaindaise sauce which were largely lacking. I received more of an aioli topping drizzle, but the dish was quite dry with very few veggies or sauce. I’m not sure I would order this again, although I would return to Afternoon to try something else. More of a potato bowl than a hash. I like that they prioritize fresh, local food, and that does make the flavor of ingredients stand out, but there are some composition elements that could be improved. I’m looking forward to what else these guys cook up!

Afternoon was a hit for Sunday brunch - busy but a comfortable atmosphere - service was great, Brittany and Olivia were attentive and so pleasant. The food was excellent. The crispy potato’s are always delicious, and the special mushroom toast reminded me of home. The food is fancy but affordable - and feels elevated while still casual. Would definitely come back!!!!

Google
I had never been there before, but I had a great time:)! Even though they overlooked a small detail and I had inquiries concerning their menu, the server was kind, and I'm satisfied with everything overall. My partner and I were blown away by the meal there, especially the smoked salmon! Without a doubt, I'll return. Additionally, don't rely on the online menu as it may change periodically.

Afternoon: A Hidden Gem for Elevated Comfort Food Afternoon is a delightful little spot that offers a unique blend of casual dining and gourmet flavors. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a modern yet cozy ambiance. The menu is a delightful surprise, featuring creative twists on classic comfort foods. I was particularly impressed by the pancake. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the presentation was stunning. If you're looking for a place to enjoy a delicious meal in a relaxed setting, Afternoon is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
It was my first time visiting Afternoon and it's a great spot for brunch and lunch. It was a longer wait to sit inside than outside but they had plenty of fans to keep you cool outside. I got the salted caramel latte and I thought that was good. I got the afternoon hash and it was delicious! I definitely stopping here for brunch.

Yelp
I went here for the first time this past Sunday. It took probably 25 minutes to get our group of 3 seated (original estimate was 15 min so it was close) in the last hour they were open. We grabbed a couple coffees for the wait and camped out on the tiny bench by the bathrooms. The restaurant is super cute but it's pretty loud inside. We put our order in with a waitress who was basically trying to run away before we could finish adding our last item to the order. I split two sandwiches with a friend because we couldn't decide what we wanted and this gave us two options. One was the breakfast burger with a fried egg on it and the other was the turkey club. The sandwiches were great. We didn't get any sides with them. The third one of us got a salmon toast that was gigantic and a market salad that looked fresh and wonderful. No complaints on the food. It did take forever to get our order. I'm not sure if they have an undersized kitchen and it's always like this or if this visit was just abnormally slammed. All things considered it was a nice experience.

Yelp
Finally, finally, FINALLY got the opportunity to try Afternoon. After hearing so many wonderful things about Afternoon, seeing pictures/posts on social media, etc. I made my way over to see what all the hype was about. Afternoon is a quaint brunch eatery serving up some unique, fresh dishes. They pride themselves on using high quality, local ingredients, as well as making very good coffee and pastries. It does get busy and you will most likely have to put your name down to wait for a table. With that being said, I would recommend arriving early to get your name on a waitlist, especially on the weekends. My friends and I arrived around 11:30 on a Saturday and had to wait roughly 30 minutes for a table for three. While we waited, we checked out a local plant shop called Serpentine that was near by to kill the time. When we got a text our table was ready, we promptly made our way over and seated right away. The inside is cute and they offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was very sweet, but she did rush us to order a little, no big deal though. It was hard choosing just one thing to order and did take us a little while to make our decisions. Their menu does seasonally change, as do the pastries they offer. They do have specials and offer Dutch babies on the weekends, as well as cinnamon rolls. One thing I was disappointed by was the wait time for our food. It took probably between 30-40min for our food to come out after we ordered it. This was slightly frustrating. I do understand that they make everything from scratch and it is all prepared fresh to order, but this wait seemed a little long. It appeared that all the tables around us had to endure this wait as well. I ended up starting with a pastry, our server recommended the guava and cheese turnover. There was only one left, so she snagged it super quickly for me, which I appreciated. This was PHENOMENAL. Super flaky and buttery with a sweet guava filling that paired perfectly with cheese. A wonderful pastry, seriously couldn't praise this turnover enough and would highly recommend. Then we ordered our mains, I went with the Afternoon Hash with a side of Johnny Cakes. The hash includes their crispy potatoes, sautéed veggies, brown butter hollandaise, 2 eggs (your style), and choice of sausage or bacon. I went with scrambled eggs and sausage for my protein. As stated above, the food took a while to arrive, but when it did, oh boy was I excited to dive right in. My hash was fabulous. The potatoes were excellent and I can see why so many people like them. So crispy, with the perfect amount of seasonings. The sausage had a great savory, fennel taste to it and wasn't dry at all. The eggs were scrambled just right and the hollandaise tied the whole dish together. There weren't many sautéed veggies, but nonetheless the dish was a hit. The Johnny cakes were like cornmeal pancakes. They were a more savory than your traditional pancake, but were delicious with the maple syrup. My friends all enjoyed their dishes as well and agreed that we must return! We wanted to try a dutch baby, but weren't interested in the current flavor they were offering, maybe next time. Overall, Afternoon is a great brunch establishment in Gainesville serving brunch like no other. They had a great menu and there is surely something for everyone. Everything we ordered was great with the best flavors. Their pastries are a must and compliment the meal so well. My hash was one of the best breakfast hashes I've had in a while and I cannot say enough good things about those potatoes! My only reason for knocking a star was due to the really long wait for our food. The service is decent, but could be more attentive. The interior is cute and there is a nice ambiance. Cannot wait to return and explore more of their menu, and try their coffee too!

Yelp
Use to love this place but has changed too much and took away what made it good. Some menu items are gone, no counter service anymore so food service is slower to be brought out. If you are the owner and read this please take into account what really worked before. The biscuit was cold and hard, burrito was flavorless and took forever to come out. The crispy potatoes and scone were the only things that are good.

Yelp
Went here 2 different times, both with similar experiences. We came on the weekend and were seated fairly quickly. Unfortunately, the food took over an hour both times to arrive, and the menu was out of the few items we really wanted to try. While the vibe is very cute and has a great atmosphere, the quality of food itself is subpar at best. For those who enjoy quality matcha, this is not the place. It was very milky and not strong. I got a Salmon Toast, and the bread was so rough, it hurt my jaw. The prices are also extremely steep for the portion of food you receive. If you do come here, I would say it is more for the vibes and photos than the food itself. However, sometimes the presentation will differ depending on the day (e.g. glass cups, plastic plates, etc). My favorite thing would definitely be the coffee, which is very tasty and worth the cost. Overall, I would only come if you have time to spare, as they are often backed up and really busy.

Yelp
Came to this place after a UF graduation. Compared to other restaurants in the area it seemed pretty chill and nice. They don't take larger reservations, it was 8 of us. The servers were fairly nice and were able to seat us outside due to our part size. The food was really good and the space was cute. Would recommend for a simple afternoon lunch.

Yelp
We still love this place. Ingredients are always super fresh. Great flavorful meals all around. I will say the acoustics leave some to be desired, and with a loud table next to us and the way sound carried, we could barely hear ourselves. My mom also got a cafe con leche, and it definitely tasted like their espresso machine has seen some burnt grounds and not been well cleaned. However, the food never disappoints and we will always beat a path back to this place.

Yelp
Love coming here and every visit is such a treat. I got the chicken salad and burrito and split the potatoes with my bf. I also had a salted caramel iced latte with whole milk. Everything was delicious. The crispy potatoes are always a must for me. I love that they have seasonal offerings and they are always changing up the menu depending on what's in season. Service was good but server seemed to be annoyed at us because we were taking awhile to order and looked bothered . Other than that you can tell everything is made in house. I loved the chicken salad and I'm by no means a lover of them but this one changed my mind. Loved the pickles inside and the rye bread took me by surprise in a good way. Their potato chips that come with it are addicting and sliced thinly, it's amazing Joe they make their own instead of resorting to bagged. I love the way they make their eggs fluffy and everything is just simple but elegant. This is one of those must visit brunch places in Gainesville.

Yelp
Overall: Pleasant new surprises with service. Food has remained the same, which is good. The rearrangement with seating has made the experience of going to Afternoon more pleasant. Service: The biggest change that I love! You no longer order at the cashier and try to find a place to sit. They will seat you now! Plus, they come to you for your order. Amazing! Food: As my previous experiences, the food is the same maybe slightly better? Not sure about that because I used to feel it was hit or miss and never consistently but I'll need to go back a few more times to really see consistent change. This time I tried the French omelette, which is a omelette given with sour cream! It was interesting. The omelette was cooked really well (as in not under or over cooked). I also ordered potatoes on the side, which could've been crispier. Ambience: I believe the rearranged searing to accommodate more ppl inside so it was nice!

Yelp
While enjoying a little "get away" from home, we chose to have a very late breakfast/early lunch at Afternoon just north of the City Center. The reviews were mixed, but we gave it a shot because it claimed to be pet-friendly (we have a service dog) and prefer to support those with similar values. We were promptly seated and our drink order was taken by our server, Mya. Not sure what the building was originally, but the interior was bright, clean and open. My wife got the Classic Breakfast and I got the Turkey Club. Everything was super fresh - the turkey, the bacon, lettuce - all very fresh. The eggs, bacon and toast were all perfectly flavored as you would expect them to be. Absolutely wonderful meal and delicious food.

Yelp
This is one of my go to breakfast and brunch places in Gainesville! Definitely has the hipster vibes. The people working here are super friendly and I love the simple yet quaint ambiance. The food is solid. I got a salad here last time, and really loved the bacon jam and the vinaigrette. The bacon jam provided the right balance of sweet and salty while the vinaigrette provided just the right amount of sour zing. This all contrasts well with the bitterness of the arugula and richness of the poached egg. Yes, getting a table can be hard at times, and parking is not always ideal. But I think if you are in town, do give them a try :)

Yelp
Iced mocha was yummy! I came in at 3:15 and was not greeted for a good 2 mins although many staff members walked by and then I finally got sat and the table was dirty. I was alone and ordered quickly and there was a group of people who came in after me. My waitress was nice and explained the menu to me thoroughly but it was weird hearing the staff talk loudly about people coming in late and how they hate this and that from customers... the French toast was soggy and wet. The omelette was great tho. Please save the customer comments until the staff is alone!

Yelp
Bring your sunblocks -- Those very strong kinds of sunblock with SPF 70, 80, or 100+ and be ready to park yourself for a while because the waiting line canbe long especially on two Sundays we have gone there:) Once you make it to the entrance, you will be given a menu to look over and then wait in line again inside to order:) Once you placed your order after the wait, you have finally made it to the promised land!!! Pick a table and slump down on the comfy chair and feast your eyes with all the wonderful foods other people are eating or cruise around the tables of other people confirming that you have made the right choice about your food!! Everything there is so tasty so there is really no bad choices here! Just close your eyes and point at the menu and you will get something you will enjoy eating;) Yes, it is that good!!! My hubby made a joke while we were waiting in line putting the sunblock on that the restaurant is called The Afternoon because you get there in the morning and get in in the afternoon:) Yes, he is a funny man:))

Yelp
Everyone at Afternoon is always so welcoming and nice. Opted for outdoor seating and didn't feel hot despite the sunny and 80 degrees weather. The food tastes amazing and I can't wait to work my way through the menu.

Yelp
This place is so darn tasty! Simple yet good! This particular visit I said outside with a friend and it was so nice! Now they have waitstaff so long are the days where we are getting up and ordering in line ourselves! OMG game changer! Love it what a great addition to the restaurant. Outdoor eating is usually not my thing but on this day it was perfect! No bugs or flies and the weather was not too hot either. I got an iced matcha with half an avocado toast and scrambled eggs. I got half because I thought half meant one slice but it actually means half of slice smh ‍ did not know that but that's what happens when you assume so don't be like me and ask! Waitstaff was attentive and quick and food was delicious despite my half piece of avocado toast. I'm already ready anticipating my next time!

Andrew C.

Yelp
Comfortable vibe bustling with activity. Food was modest but a bit light on value. Biscuit and homemade Jam took the cake but was served cold which was not preferred. Potato salad was meh and flavorless. Felt like yesterday's baked potatos, lightly smashed and thrown in a bowl. Wonderful smiling and attentive service with comfortable outdoor and shaded seating.

Yelp
I'm in from Tallahassee and stumbled upon this place. Brunch, service, and the restaurant are all great. It's casual but nice. The selection is good and we will definitely be back.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in Gainesville. One of my favorite brunch spots. They always have fun drinks, and the Dutch baby and potatoes are some of the best in Gainesville. Great atmosphere, and always crowded so make sure you get there early!
google avatar

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite places in Gainesville to eat breakfast right now. Not only is the food delicious but the vibe within is fantastic. I've eaten here many times and love how the menu occasionally changes with new updates and new dishes to try. Today we tried the Mushroom Tartine and the Turkish Eggs. The Turkish Eggs were full of fresh herbs and spices that had me happy with every bite. The Mushroom Tartine was full of garlic and the mushrooms were delicious. Next time I'm going to go back to my classic order of the Crispy Potato's and the Chicken Karaage and Johnny Cakes. A tip to the wise there's usually a pretty long line during the weekends before 11 so if you're trying to have a fun breakfast, visit on the weekdays! Can't wait to come back!!!

Yelp
AWESOME! Service was genuine, cheerful, and helpful. Housemade bacon excellent, Lyonnaise salad really special, and omg they nailed the French omelette! I wish I lived nearby. This place would be a regular stop!

Yelp
Afternoon is a cute breakfast spot in Gainesville - that's much needed. This restaurant actually used to be home to my childhood hair salon, so it's cool to see how they converted it. I went around 10am and there was a good crowd there. When ordering at the counter, they give you a large glass bottle which I love because it guarantees you will stay hydrated and will not have to wait on someone to refill your glass. However, when getting my glass for my water - I did receive a dirty glass but they were nice about replacing it. If it's a nice day, make sure you get a spot outside as it's nicely covered with fans. I ordered a green juice that consisted of kale, cucumber, lemon, parsely, and celery. It was pretty good, definitely had been juiced that morning so it was fresh. I have been reading the Yelp reviews about the shakshuka and had been dying to try it out. With the help of the staff, I ordered it with feta as suggested. The food came out pretty quickly and I was excited because I couldn't wait to dive in. The shakshuka is this Middle Eastern based dish with gently poached eggs in a delicious chunky tomato sauce. First off, the tomato sauce is filled with spices, peppers and onions. Not only is it aromatic to the nose, it aromatic to your taste buds. The toast that comes with the dish is a great addition to scoop up the poached eggs and the sauce - including the fresh feta cheese. The fresh herbs were a great touch to the dish. It's such a simple but satisfying dish. I can't wait to come back to order this item again and try out something new like the Dutch baby.

Yelp
I brought my mom here because my friend told me about it and I thought she'd love it! The place was crowded but the line wasn't too long. It was our first time there so I was asking a few questions, and unfortunately the girl taking our order at the counter wasn't very helpful. She seemed disinterested and rushed to take our order, which is the only downside about this place. We decided to sit outside because the weather was nice and they have it set up really cute out there. Our food was brought out quickly and it looked beautiful and was delicious! Everything tasted fresh and was, to my surprise, very filling! The menu was a lot smaller than what I was expecting, but they definitely proved that they specialize in what they do have. They had a good amount of pastry selections which were also really tasty. The coffee was a little too sweet for me but it was still good.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Third try was a week day lunch with friends and we sat outside. It may have been the perfect 70 degree spring day, the company, or it truly has gotten better. I could eat that mushroom tartine all day! On average the food is a 3.5, the ambiance outside was a 4/5, overall a 3.5/4 from me (if there were table service would bump it up a little)
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
First impression is very nice, small, and cute place but the smell inside is strange. I prefer to sit outdoors for this restaurant for sure. I also order a coffee and found out you have to add your own sugar and milk to the drink, which I was not a fan of. The coffee itself also did not taste good which was disappointing since I specifically went for a brunch. I will say the food is decent and I would not have high hopes for this place, although many of my friends enjoy the food here. Certain dishes have strange portioned sizes so I would ask an employee what they recommend. But for Gainesville this place is not too bad.
google avatar

Beli M.

Yelp
I have been here several times, but my last brunch was disappointing. The sourdough toast was very hard bite to the point that tasted burnt. The potatoes are supposed to be crunchy, but this were also overcooked. It was a busy day, but I would love for this place to have more consistency in their food preparation because it's expensive. My breakfast alone was $30.00 including tip.

Yelp
Afternoon has a great variety of options, tasty food, and good service contributing to the overall positive dining experience. However, the slightly higher prices and the portion size of certain dishes prevent me from giving it a perfect score. Nevertheless, it remains a highly recommended brunch spot with its enjoyable ambiance and presentation of the food. I tried the vegetarian roti wrap, which turned out to be a refreshing and balanced dish. Topped with lettuce, pickled veg, and radish, and filled with beans, it offered a nice combination of sweet and savory flavors. However, I did feel that the portion could have been a bit more filling considering the price. I also ordered the butterfly lemonade which was served in a good-sized glass and was purple from the type of tea. The flavors were subtle and pleasant, adding a delightful touch to the meal. Including the tip, my total came to around $22.One of my friends decided to try the almond croissant, which was also tasty but on the smaller side. It would have been great if the portion size were a bit more generous, but the flavor made up for it.

Yelp
Brunch-ing in Gainesville, FL this morning and stopped at this delightful spot called "afternoon" (@afternoonbaking). They specialize in craft coffees, made-from-scratch pastries, and some really creative brunch dishes like this one. This is the Chicken Karaage and Johnny Cakes, a Japanese/Southern fusion spin on chicken and waffles. It's chucks of Japanese-style fried dark meat chicken and cornbread pancakes topped with honeycomb brown butter, and fermented garlic honey. The chicken was crispy, tender, and juicy. But my favorite thing was the cornbread pancakes. It had real corn in the batter and with that honeycomb butter and garlic fermented honey, it was so delicious. Sweet, nutty, a little tangy, engaging, and most of all, not boring. Each bite had a little different taste than the bite before. Overall, a great dish. Next time you're in Gainesville, definitely hit this place up.

Yelp
The food is always delicious here and the service is pretty quick! You do usually have to wait in line, but after ordering the food always comes out pretty quickly. They have some really great options on the menu, it's always hard to make a decision! The whole place is super cute and a wonderful vibe. Definitely a great brunch place to go to with friends!

Yelp
I was on vacay looking for dope brunch spots and stumbled across this little gem. This cafe was right up my alley w| their green efforts & hippy vibe. Their customer service is excellent as well. Steak & Eggs had such a nice plating and it was tasty as well. Chicken Karaage & Johnny Cakes was SO good. The cakes are more savory than sweet so it's a nice balance. Now for the sleeper dish: Lemon Ricotta Toast. Wow!!!! I didn't expect the flavor profiles to be sooooo fire. It was nice and creamy w| a splash of citrus. It was heaven! If you're ever visiting Gainesville for a Florida game or etc make sure you stop by! follow for food adventures

Yelp
Ordered Shashuka... couldn't even eat more than a mouthful. Terrible taste- too much cumin n onions. I felt like I was eating curry. Very disappointed. Food pictures look better than what came n tasted. My partner had their sausage n eggs for breakfast n only mediocre. Nothing to shout about. First n last visit

Tasty food served with a smile, in a pleasant setting to boot - but way too expensive for what you get. I am vegan and as their non- meat options are pretty limited I ordered the daily special (tacos) and asked for potatoes instead of meat, they charged me an extra buck for a "special order" even though they offered this substitution. I also ordered a latte and they asked if I wanted simple syrup. I said yes and they charged me an extra $1.75. Unless you like paying $8 for espresso with warm milk, look elsewhere.

Yelp
This is one of my new favorite brunch spots in town. Each time I've visited, the food has been tasty and hearty, with fresh ingredients and a nice presentation. This is also one of the few non-coffee shops where I will order a drink, as many other brunch spots in town only serve regular coffee and not specialty lattes. I only wish they included specials here and there, as I'm getting close to trying everything on the small but mighty menu! On my most recent visit, the mushroom tartine really impressed me. The bread stole the show, with crispy edges and a soft middle, and the local oyster mushrooms were delicious.

Yelp
My friend and I had a nice breakfast and visit sitting outside. The light traffic makes this outdoor seating area more enjoyable. Ordering was simple and the food was good. The chocolate croissant was smaller than upper crust but had more chocolate. They make a good poached egg.

Yelp
A very quite eatery by the street, clean and simple, with indoor and out door tables, with college music in the background -:) Good service and food. The salmon is fresh, however, two small dark pieces tucked under is inedible and unamusing. Love their tea saucer - they provide it for the tea bag.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, definitely best coffee in Gainesville! The breakfast is also a must have. The service is super friendly and the ambience is super cozy. I feel so happy and welcomed at afternoon.

Yelp
No wait on Saturday afternoon. Kimchi salmon melt sandwich was wonderful. Lovely, quiet, cool outdoor seating area. Have already recommended to friends.

Yelp
FABULOUS!! We rolled in and weren't expecting much but that was a mistake! From the accommodating service to the excellent food this was a 10/10 experience. The food is fresh, well prepared, and savory. Ate every bite and we are hoping to comeback again for more. MUST TRY!!

Yelp
Small portions, but every cute and tasty food! I love the shatshuka I just feel I always need to share an appetizer because it's not a lot of food and normally a long wait.

Yelp
The ambiance of this brunch lunch restaurant is fantastic but I would not go here for food. The shakshuka and Dutch baby I ordered were both burnt. The portion size for the shakshuka was incredibly small as well. The service was not amazing either, the lady who took my order did not pay us much attention and stared us down when she wanted us to order. I would not come here unless you want to spend $28 on a small breakfast and bitter coffee!

Yelp
Food and the vibe were great, service was very subpar. Came in with a party of 6 on a Thursday morning around 11 and although we were sat immediately the waitress took around 20 minutes to get to the table. She then just asked what we wanted and was annoyed when my girlfriend wasn't ready to order food as she hadn't even ordered her drink yet. Coffee then took 15 more minutes, followed by food another 20 after that. The food and coffee were very good, but the service was completely terrible. When we received the check there was a 25% automatic tip on tables above 5. Ridiculous that we weren't informed. Won't be coming back.

Yelp
We were a party of 6 and it took over an hour to get our food. It is one thing if the kitchen is backed up and the staff apologizes for the wait, but instead they would constantly say it would come out in the next 5 minutes over and over again but it would never come. When my breakfast sandwich finally came it was supposed to come with "pickled onions" on it but instead they added raw onions and pickles. I refused to pay for it. I do not recommend coming here. I went last year and it was actually good. Unfortunately, the quality and service went significantly down.

Yelp
I love the food and the vibes at this place. You have a to wait in line for at least 30 minutes before you sit down every time. After that, service is great and you get your food pretty quickly. The burrito was delicious, I recommend!!

Yelp
This is my first time exploring the food scenes in Gainesville and who would have thought that this place had so much hidden potentials! If you are looking for a nice way to start your morning, then look no further and come to enjoy some delicious breakfast at Afternoon! Hell even if it is smack during 3PM, the real afternoon, I would still eat breakfast at this place. First off, they have free refills on their regular coffee, so that's already off to a good start for me. Second, their pastries are absolutely delicious. You can't really go wrong with any of them. Finally, try their shakshuka! I am by no means a vegetarian, but I absolutely fell in love with this dish. The tomatoes were perfectly spiced with a strong hint of cumin (one of my favorite spices). The eggs were perfectly baked. Dip that toast into some of that nicely melted yolk and top it off with the spiced tomato paste and you will be sent to food heaven. Highly HIGHLY recommend their shakshuka if you are here! Parking is super easy since they have a parking lot right next to the restaurant. The restaurant was packed that morning, but we were still able to find parking spots that day.

Yelp
We chose this place since the pictures of the food look great. Unfortunately, the service was so bad that we are going back. We waited over 30 minutes for the food to arrive and when it did it was cold which means it was made and just sat in the kitchen until the waitress decided to bring it over. No one came to ask us if all was ok and if we needed anything else. I had to actually get up and ask for the check and then go to the front to pay and seeing the waitress just standing there and having a chat with one of the kitchen staff.

Yelp
I'm new in town from San Francisco, and I was just looking for a simple lunch place where I could eat and loaf a bit while I waited for something else and luckily found 'afternoon'. First off, the vibe of this place is wonderful. I love that the women who operate the restaurant actually spin records for music. I admit that walking in the door and hearing Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot might have juiced the stats a little as it's one of my favorite albums of all time, but they really don't need it: This place is great simply on its own merits. It's counter service but It's still service with a smile. Oh yeah, and the egg and cheese sandwich that I had was delicious!
