Best Sushi Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Sushi chef-owner Hirofumi Nakano trained in Japan for 25 years before opening this comfortable neighborhood restaurant in Scottsdale, where he’s been turning out traditional sushi and other Japanese dishes for 20 years now. There’s a reason he’s still around. There aren’t too many surprises here, but who cares when the sushi is meticulously presented and on-point?" - Nikki Buchanan

Google
I had a chance to see friends from Prescott, so we met at Hiro to grab a bite. It's a small place with an amazing staff that knew the menu inside and out. There wasn't anything we had that we didn't love. Such good food and a fun time. Don't expect small bites. The spider roll and the Sedona roll are almost more than a bite, but so worth it.

Google
Awesome place and waaaay better variety than other sushi spots around town. Isn’t cheap but is high quality and better than the upper end of sushi in town. Got all kinds of things, favorite was soft shell crab (1st photo) that was a 10/10. 100% coming back, family owned, very friendly staff and seasonal changing menu.

Google
Super fresh sushi, great prices, and lightning-fast service! The fish was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the rolls were creative and delicious. No long waits, super friendly staff , perfect for a casual dinner. A hidden gem for sushi lovers! The edamame was a bit oily but the garlic was legit. The scallop roll was crispy delicious and the spicy crispy tuna was my favorite!

Hiro Sushi is top notch, but not in the way that you'd expect. Hiro's does not come in as a "high end" sushi restaurant, touting omakases and bespoke combo flavors. Rather, Hiro Sushi is more of an everyday place where you can visit casually with friends and family to enjoy just great sushi. Again, nothing about this joint is snooty or haughty. It really is a home-style sushi place where the chefs put their heart into serving you a great piece of nigiri and tasty rolls. The fish is fresh and thickly cut. The rolls are innovative, but more importantly, balanced. The side dishes like the miso-marinated seabass are not done in a stuck up way but as if your grandma would've cooked it for a hearty meal. Definitely tasty. And you can feel the care that has gone into the preparation. When you remove the formalities imposed by the structure of making, serving and consuming sushi, it really comes down to the love that has gone into the entire flow. And Hiro's absolutely gets this right. Now is this the best sushi I have ever tasted? Absolutely not. Yes, they are great. But not phenomenal. But then again, you do not judge your mom's food against a Michelin star meal, yet you love it more and lean on it every day. That is what Hiro Sushi nails. It is a very weird way of saying that you find comfort in their food but that is what it is. There is love and comfort in their sushi's and cooking. Service was a bit spotty as they were super busy and some of the servers seemed overwhelmed. But again, that's okay. Life's not perfect. And most of the times, that's the way it should be. If you are in Scottsdale, Hiro Sushi should be an absolute destination, more frequently than not. Will return.

Google
I tried this place because it share a name and star rating to my favorite sushi place (sushi hiro in Las Vegas, no relation) and I have to say the fish and the staff here are just as amazing. Def tied for top sushi place in the US IMO. The Toro Belly was amazing.

Google
Shhh tell no one of this spot - by far the best sushi in Scottsdale. A whopping 7 tables, 16 bar spots and lines out the door, Hiro doesn't take reservations and they don't need to. The food speaks for itself which is something I rarely say. And yes, there are a couple pricier spots that will give this place a run for its money (Uchi being one), but for the cost and quality, no competition. We are true sushi/sashimi people - not really into fried rolls or Americanized sushi - so we appreciate the thought and care that so clearly goes into the integrity of the fish here. Stellar food!

Google
Love this restaurant it brings me back to Japan. They have great nigiri the salmon is top tier. Get there early there often is a bit of a wait when they open, but it’s worth it.

AL

Google
They have amazing, fresh fish. The sashimi is refreshing, thick slices. I do wish as a first time guest they explained how to order at the sushi bar vs server. But that’s minor. The calamari and gyoza were bland. I love the presentation of the sushi’s too. The crispy spicy tuna was absolutely amazing. Even my spouse who doesn’t like sushi loved that one.

Yelp
Food is always good and fast. Very attentive service. The ambiance fits a nice casual dinner or family outting. We love it every time.

Yelp
One of our family friends recommended this sushi spot and they were spot on. The location is nothing fancy but inside the restaurant is cozy and inviting. They tend to get busy so check in on Yelp and get on the waitlist. We were seated fairly quickly and the sushi chef was able to provide his recommendations and also advise on what would be good to try according to our tastes. We had the Las Vegas Roll, Spider Roll, Lollipop and volcano as an appetizer. Out of all everything that we ordered, the Volcano and Spider Roll were the tastiest. The lollipop was wrapped in cucumber and it's an acquired taste. The Las Vegas roll was our least favorite. The fish in the rolls was fresh and didn't have any fishy aftertaste. The sushi restaurant didn't disappoint and would satisfy your craving for some delicious sushi. The only thing I'd say could change was the menu to have some sort of visual representation of what the rolls look like.

Yelp
We came here on a recommendation from a close friend. It is probably some of the best sushi we've had in the valley. All of the sushi is fresh flown in daily and the Chef studied in Japan to hone his craft. The bluefin tune nigiri was to die for and all of the rolls were delicious and not too overpowering I would recommend making a reservation if possible or showing up right when they open at 5pm. They are a small restaurant and it can fill up fast.

Yelp
We came here on a whim for a birthday dinner and had a great experience. We ordered multiple different kinds of sushi and sashimi, all tasted great and fresh. The server was very helpful with helping out the picky eater in our group. They then surprised our table with a birthday song and some matcha ice cream.

Yelp
by far my favorite sushi spot in AZ. sitting at the bar let us have the best sushi chef serving us and making our rolls right in front of us. we got plum wines and let him pick his favorites off the menu for us to try. everything was a solid 10/10. its such a small lowkey spot, not too loud, and not a lot of seating which was nice because it felt intimate and Japan inspired for sure

Yelp
This is the place we come to as a whole family because it's everyone's favorite. The quality is always top-notch. The service is always perfect. They've recently renovated and the place looks great. There is a long line so come early or be prepared to wait. The food is always very fresh And the quality is very consistent.

Yelp
So good. Every. Time. Incredible quality, variety, value and hospitality every time. Very busy so plan accordingly or get on the Yelp waitlist as you approach the restaurant. Not much more needs to be said. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words so check out the new photos and see for yourself.

Yelp
Date night! Our second time here and this place is still amazing! We were seated at the bar this time and we got to watch the chefs make all of the sushi. This place is always busy and rightfully so! The waitresses were attentive and the food came as it was ready. We were brave and decided to try their Wagyu sushi and it just melted in our mouths. It was such a cool experience! I wanted to try the cold soba dipping noodles. The sauce was great and the noodles didn't stick to each other so dipping them was easy. Then my boyfriend got the bento box dinner and this was so worth it! You get to choose two protein and then it comes with miso soup and a small house salad, rice and seaweed salad. To finish off the night we both got a sushi roll and they were just perfection. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Hiro Sushi Salmon Roll is a small portion of salmon but a good tasting order. Caterpillar Roll this is so precise, the caterpillar has antennas and eyes, very creative and fun Spider Roll very well made with a good amount of soft shell crab, this is the real deal. Teriyaki Dinner good generous amount of teriyaki chicken (all white meat), a little lite on the Teriyaki Sauce, but a good meal Teriyaki Appetizer is a lighter version of the dinner and is by itself, no rice or condiments, good size also. Top quality ingredients, fish, sushi. A big thumbs up

Yelp
Small, packed, and no reservations, but still one of the go-to sushi spots in town We squeezed into Hiro Sushi for dinner (literally, tables are that close ). The sushi was fresh overall, though the uni wasn't quite what we hoped for. But the bluefin tuna and toro nigiri was amazing. They open at 5 PM and there's already a line by then, so go early if you don't want to wait. It's not fancy, not spacious, but if you're here for quality sushi and quick service, this spot delivers.

Yelp
Great service and a wonderful cozy ambience for a sushi bar! The food was really tasty and I would go back there again.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is really good! I ordered the sushi dinner ($28) and thought it was well worth it. It came with miso soup, salad, a tuna roll, and 8 pieces of sushi. The sushi was fresh and tasted like it was good quality. We arrived a few minutes before open at 5 pm and we were seated right when it opened. If you come at 4:40 you can put your name on the waitlist early. If you come with a group larger than 2 people I recommend doing that.

Yelp
Been going here for over a decade. Always remained my #1 sushi spot in phoenix/scottsdale. 10/10 every single time. The sushi is always fresh and the food is always delicious. I recommend sitting at the bar with the sushi chefs.

Yelp
Hiro Sushi is one of our favorite date night spots in Scottsdale! It's super authentic, fun and always a good time. We love sitting at the bar and getting the omakase - it's fresh, creative, and you can tell the chefs really care about what they're doing. The staff is awesome. They are friendly, funny, and just genuinely great people. It's a smaller spot and gets busy fast, so definitely hop on the Yelp waitlist ahead of time because the wait can stack up, but it's 100% worth it.

Yelp
I have went past this location for several months and then decided to stop in for lunch, and I am glad we did! Hiro Sushi is a gem for sushi lovers looking for a cozy and intimate dining experience. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere, with a nice sushi bar that allows you to watch the chefs expertly prepare each dish. The sushi itself is incredibly fresh, offering a great variety of options to suit every taste. Service was another highlight, making the entire experience enjoyable from start to finish. If you're looking for a relaxed yet high-quality sushi spot, Hiro Sushi is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
There's no better place for sushi in Scottsdale than what Ricky and his team offer at Hiro Sushi. The place gets busy from opening till close, so at times you might be facing a wait time for up to an hour. Don't let that scare you away though, it is well worth the wait. Our favorite seating is at the sushi bar to see all the action of some of the best crafted sushi and house specials you ever eat. This is my 14 year old's favorite place after a round of golf or golf training on Wednesdays.
google avatar

Shiloh M.

Yelp
This place is fabulous. The service is impeccable. So helpful, polite and friendly. They even made some kid friendly chopsticks for my son! The dining room is small, so be prepared for a wait if you are there at a peak time. But it is worth waiting for. The sushi is just so good. Even just the shrimp tempura roll was next level.

Suzanne M.

Yelp
One of the Best sushi restaurants in town. Good vibe. Get there early! They are always packed!

Yelp
The place was definitely on the colder side, so heads up if you get chilly easily! The chefs were super friendly and made awesome recommendations based on what I like, which was a nice touch. No happy hour, FYI. The salmon nigiri was amazing--not super red, which is usually indicative of farm raised, and it just melted in my mouth. The Hotate (scallop) had a perfect hint of spice that took it to the next level. The Toro (fatty tuna) was also incredible, easily a 9/10 for me. The Negi Toro roll was more of a 7/10, but to be fair, I'm not usually big on tuna. I know, weird that I loved the Toro. One thing to know: no TVs here. So if trying to catch a game, no dice. Overall, super friendly service and great sushi--I'd definitely go back!

Yelp
Of the 10 or so Arizona sushi restaurants I've tried in the last few years, I like Hiro Sushi the best so far. I appreciate that they offer Kizami, pickled wasabi, because it elevates everything sushi for me. It's a little spicy, tart, salty and it's the perfect condiment other than soy sauce. Where I live, most sushi restaurants don't offer crispy rice spicy tuna for some reason. But AZ and SoCal have this dish in abundance. Hiro's version was quite good. The rolls and nigiri were also tasty and the rice was well prepared. The tako wasa was very wasabi heavy, so my spouse ate the rest of my piece of nigiri for me. The fried ice cream was okay. There used to be a place at Tempe Marketplace about 15 years ago that made the best fried ice cream. They covered the ice cream in a thin layer of poundcake then battered and fried it, but unfortunately they closed a long time ago. I'm still on a search for stellar fried ice cream, but for sushi itself I'll be returning to Hiro Sushi when I get back to town. We came here on a whim on a Sunday night, but luckily they were taking walk-ins. The two of us waited 45 mins to 1 hr. We walked around the small plaza a couple times, there's not much to see, but there are outdoor picnic tables and a 3 star boba place if you need to waste some time. Highly recommend making reservations or using the online yelp waitlist if you are able to plan ahead.

Yelp
Hiro's Sushi we will be back! We left it up to the chef for an omakase dinner. Our waitress asked our preference and we went with some appetizers, sashimi and some sushi. Fresh thick cuts of fish, presentation , ambiance was intimate and romantic.

Yelp
In a non descript strip mall, you'll find this excellent sushi restaurant, and I ended up here last week after a car maintenance appointment. I definitely like really good pieces of fresh sushi, and this place did not disappoint and made me pretty happy. I sat at the sushi bar, and the sushi chef helped to serve me. I first started with the blue fin, and this was very tasty. I don't really put any soy sauce on my pieces of fish as I enjoy it raw with a smear of wasabi. Next, I had the nanbanzuke. When I asked the chef what this is, he described it as kind of like chicken nuggets. I don't know thats how I would have described it, but it was tasty. It's really a marinated fish of your choice that has a coating that's been fried or perhaps pan-fried. This felt like a comfort dish, and I could have used some rice with it. The last thing I had was tuna belly, and that was just delicious! And I loved how it was fresh and a little fatty in texture. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'll definitely be back when I am in the area and want some nice pieces of sushi!
google avatar

Yelp
Can't go wrong with the sushi here. It's always fresh and the sushi rice is seasoned well, just perfection at its best. Every piece of nigiri or maki roll is always good and beautifully prepared. Servers are quick and helpful. As I have lived in Tokyo, I always feel like I'm in a little sushi restaurant in Tokyo here. The decor is minimalist just like in Japan. "Irasshaimase" is the greeting heard upon entrance. Only drawback is the place is small and no reservations are allowed. We got there at exactly 5pm which is when they open. Only bar seating was available as people were lined up way before 5pm. Oh well, guess we gotta be there earlier next time as I will done back!!! So, BIG TIP, go in early! The sushi here is well worth it!

Yelp
Love their chicken katsu and tempura combo! Very delicious and it comes with miso soup and salad! I love this place very fresh and tasty!
google avatar

Cemby K.

Yelp
Very small restaurant w seatings available at the sushi bar area. We came here for a friend's birthday party. Food and service was good and everyone enjoyed their meal. Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. Not pictured: Lollipop which was great and highly recommend. I would recommend this place more for a smaller crowd vs a bigger group.

Irene M.

Yelp
Best sushi in the valley! Love sitting at the bar seeing the masters at work. Looking forward to coming back
google avatar

Yelp
This place surprisingly had a very long wait, but the time went by quickly. Four stars because of its service that we receive by this very nice older Asian waitress top tear services by her very attentive and able to give feedback on menu. I played it safe. I went for the Las Vegas roll, which was really good. If you like cream cheese and deep-fried rolls, and then this is the roll for you. The eel was great as well as the spicy mayo with just a consistencies that I like them, not too thick, but thick enough. The shumai appetizer was delicious. Served warm and melts in your mouth. Flavors were great. I would like to go back and try some different options. I sampled my friends food, the rice and chicken and that was OK.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
I love this place! We were seated by the bar area and you're given a paper menu to tick off the options you want. The mixed tempera was hot and crispy. It came with this warm sweet shoyu sauce. The batter was light and really enhanced the vegetables. We ordered a variety of nigiri and they were so fresh and bouncy. The quality of fish was top tier! We also wanted to try a rice bowl dish so we ordered the pork katsu don and it was piping hot. The egg mixture had so much flavor and warmed the soul. The entrance wall of this small place was filled with photos of famous people too. We did come at a quiet random time so it was nice to know that this 'hidden' gem was actually super popular and for the right reasons.

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant and truly feels like an oasis in the middle of Phoenix summers! This was the first place we ate it when we first moved to Phoenix in the middle of summer. Ambiance is relaxing. You might be surprised about finding a great sushi place in Phoenix, but seriously, this is a great sushi place. We mostly ate sashimi, which we think is an easy way to assess how good a place is. The sashimi was fresh, and we particularly enjoyed the yellowtail (hamachi). The white fish was unexpectedly delicious as there was a delicious crunchy garlic sauce with it. You can order fresh wasabi for an extra $2. We also had the baked mussels which had 2 pieces per shell, which made it a much better deal. Delicious! They are authentically Japanese with a number of Japanese speaking staff. A person we trust who has been in the restaurant business herself told us that her Japanese friend, who once had a restaurant in Phoenix before she retired, still frequents Hiro Sushi and really likes the owners at Hiro Sushi. Hirofumi Nakano's son also created Sushi Nakano, which we are interested in checking out too.

Erin B.

Yelp
Hiro is absolutely amazing!! It is always super packed (for good reason) so prepare to have to wait a little for a table or place at the sushi bar. The food is always so good and the service is fast. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Always a treat to have a meal here!
google avatar

Cheska G.

Yelp
One of the best, if not the best sushi spots in the valley. Very quaint and intimate dining set up, it transports me back to Japan everytime I dine here. Great options of my favorite sushi. Quite pricey but very worth it for the quality you're getting. Service was great! Highly recommend it here.
google avatar

Tamster W.

Yelp
OMG this is on my Top Sushi place's on the West coast !!! It's Amazing !!! But you do have to get there early as it is a small location and fills up fast... we got there 15 few minutes before 5 and sat in our cars but literally at 10 min till 5 it was like a swarm of bees going back to the hive ... lol But well worth the wait
google avatar

Rick R.

Yelp
If I'm in Arizona, I'm going to Hiro Sushi every time. The quality of the fish, the temperature of the rice, the flavors, all perfect! We had a small wait of 30 minutes, but I'm from Los Angeles originally, 30 minutes, pshhhhhhh that's nothing for food and service that's amazing.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Some of the best sushi at a place you'd never expect! We love this for lunch or date night. It's super small but don't let that foul you on the sushi quality!

Yelp
We have been going to Hiro for several years since we moved to AZ. Though the sushi in AZ cannot beat the Bay Area, SF, Hiro was the best home town casual, sushi restaurant. However, the food has just been going downhill, the sushi rice was not up to par yesterday, it was a little too sticky. The fish pieces are at least 20% smaller since beginning of the year. My hubby had the sushi platter with the chef selected nigiri, some of the fish were dry around the edges as if the sushi chef didn't cover the pieces in the fridge case, or it was pre-cut; sitting too long. We also noticed that sushi chefs behind the counter have all changed since we first were there a few years ago, lots of turn over. I had the fried squid legs appetizer, it was over fried and dry. The amaebi was $19 for a nigiri (the usual 2 pieces). The shrimp head was over fried. I had to ask for the tempura dipping sauce. We also had the saba shioyaki, it was dried, overgrilled. Disappointed, it's going downhill. I guess the owners don't have to keep up as there customers waiting for table. As regulars, we do notice the slide downhill in food quality.

Yelp
Went to Hiro Sushi for the first time today, right as they opened at 5 PM. This place fills up fast ... and was totally worth it. I really enjoyed the sashimi which we complemented with some super fresh and water melting toro. I usually finish off any sushi meal with seared unagi. Saying it like it is - this place is amazing and Ricky our chef was very friendly. I will become a regular here as I liked the food, the atmosphere and it is only 5 minutes from my house.
google avatar

Kaelyn G.

Yelp
You know it's good when there's a line out the door. We waited a while for a table, but it was well worth it! I am not a sushi eater myself, but I was told that this is some of the best sushi in the valley. Very welcoming and friendly environment.
google avatar

Erika G.

Yelp
Wow! 5 STARS! They open at 5:00 and seat as many people as they can so we caught the next wave of tables and we're seated by 5:45/5:50 (DEFINITELY worth the wait!) The waitress was nice and answered all of our questions about the menu and took the time to make some recommendations. You can't leave this place without trying the Crunchy Tuna. Every roll and dish was amazing, will definitely come back when I am in the area
google avatar

Hailey S.

Yelp
The hostess was very kind. She quoted us 20 minutes but only ended up waiting about 5. We sat at the sushi bar and there were 4 chefs making the food. It seemed to be a very authentic Japanese restaurant. We ordered a lot of food and everything was so delicious and made very quickly. It was one of the best sushi places I have eaten at and I will definitely be returning.
google avatar

Mellissa M.

Yelp
This place has some of the BEST sushi I have had! They are a smaller place so get there early especially during lunch and Friday night! You won't regret it!
google avatar

Hakan O.

Yelp
The best sushi that I ever ate in the US probably. Top notch Japanese service, nice atmosphere inside the restaurant. There was a waiting list when we went there but it was not too long and totally worth it. Must try if you like sushi.
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
I can't believe that I never been here all of these years. Very authentic Japanese food , friendly staff and nice atmosphere, I felt like I was in Japan when I was there eating lunch here with my friend. We both ordered lunch special it was $14.99 for three different flavors hand rolled of salmon skin, eel and avocado. This lunch came with salad and miso soup. Such a good price for plenty of food. Em the hostess was very friendly and sweet, thank you ! We will definitely come back for more.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
The worst thing about Hiro is how difficult it is getting a table or seat at the bar. I'd go more if they took reservations because the food is outstanding. It's a tiny restaurant but so popular they need 4 sushi chefs! I love the salmon sashimi and all the rolls are excellent.
google avatar

D K.

Yelp
Super fresh sushi, friendly service. Get there early because there was a line when they opened.
google avatar

Melody K.

Yelp
My friend and I haven't been here since 2015. We decided to revisit, glad we did. We've come here several time so far for lunch, each time has been very good both service and food. We tend to always try to get a seat at the sushi bar. In addition, we stay away from the lunch specials and just order what we like. My friend and I have had a lot of items our last several visits. The Hamachi Kama is exceptional along with the Oysters. If you are not a sushi eater the Nabeyaki Udon is amazing (keep in mind it does take a bit of time, but worth it). So far so good, as long as the food and service stay good, we'll be regulars!

Yelp
Great local sushi spot. Never disappointed with the food or the service. I need more words.

S. E.

Yelp
I've been going to Hiro Sushi since the owner opened his restaurant in Scottsdale; ages ago. I have always had a very good to great meal here. I don't get a chance to come as often as I would like for the past 10 years, but it is always a treat. I have to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT about my lunch yesterday. It was the freshest fish I have had in a long time, which includes a trip to Santa Monica in June. I had squid legs Karaage, as well as sake, hamachi and mirugai sushi. Everything was so melt in the mouth delicious! All the sushi was super fresh, sweet and tasty. The mirugai was the best I've had in a long time-tender, sweet. I was in heaven! Still the best! Thank you for taking such good care of me .

Yelp
This place is an absolutely hidden gem! The food and energy are five star! I've been coming to this place for over a year ( 1x month) and every time I leave without disappointment. The spicy ribbon roll is my absolutely favorite , with some cucumber added. Those looking for a tasty fish with the rice sauce and texture. This is a must try. I've always ordered the calamari appetizer and miso soup, which also has been delicious every time. And lastly , the servers and chefs provide a unique personal touch to your experience, which makes the overall experience a five star! This is a must experience if you're in the area
