Vietnamese-Cambodian institution draws fans with chicken wings & butter beef

"Though you can dine alone (you’ll be seated at a communal table), Phnom Penh is best experienced with three to five hungry, decisive friends. And it’s important to choose friends who won’t flinch at doubling up or going off-script at this flavour-packed Vietnamese-Cambodian fixture in Chinatown. The wings, golden fried and dusted with salt and sugar, are our favorite in the city, with a lemon-pepper dip and a deliciously messy scatter of fried garlic you’ll chase down to the last shard. Tied for top-billing is the butter beef. Ultra-thin slices, tender from the soy vinaigrette, feel bright and rich in the same bite. Everything here is great, and everyone else knows it too. There’s almost always a crowd lined up out front, even in off-peak hours. The menus are taped to the window, street-facing, which could either be preparation or torture, depending on your level of hunger. No matter what, you’ll want more than one order of wings." - Michelle Sproule

"A family-run Cambodian restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown, established by Chef Murray Huynh's grandparents as a way to bring a taste of home to fellow Cambodian refugees. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere and a menu that includes heartwarming soups, refreshing shakes, and popular dishes like chicken wings, butter beef, and beef luc lac." - Michael He

"It’s a classic, institutional Vancouver Cambodian restaurant. I’m sure every Vancouverite has heard of this place, but it truly lives up to the press every time. It’s authentic, yet innovative. I’m a sucker for the classic dry Hu Tieu but you can’t go wrong with their famous lemon pepper chicken wings. It’s truly a generational effort; their parents brought the Luc Loc so the kids can create the chicken wings. It's always my first stop in Vancouver." - Michael He

"A respected family-run Cambodian restaurant in Chinatown, offering a massive menu with nearly 100 rice, noodle, and soup preparations." - Michael He

"It was already a Vancouver tradition to join the queues outside this well-priced Vietnamese Cambodian spot in Chinatown — but then the restaurant scored a Michelin Bib Gourmand and the demand has only intensified. The menu is enormous, so save yourself from the agonies of choice and order the deep-fried crunchy chicken wings (with an amazing dipping sauce), the Instagram-ready platter of thit bò butter beef, and the beef lúc lắc with egg and rice. And yeah, okay, maybe some garlic squid too. Pro-tip: Wear comfy shoes for the line." - Nikki Bayley
