I arrived downtown before a recent Bucks game with tons of time to spare, so I started wandering looking for someplace to go. I was crossing Old World Third St. and almost stopped at the Italian restaurant next door, but then I noticed San Giorgio was open. I've read about their special Vera Pizza Napoletana certification (which means their ingredients, pizza making process, and oven are certified as authentic for Neapolitan pizza), so I figured I'd stop in and try to order a pizza. I ended up being lucky that they were willing to seat me without a reservation because I would be done in time before that party arrived. I got a seat right in front of the pizza oven and ordered one of their special pizzas at that time, the Americana.
According to the menu, the Americana is a star-shaped pizza with ricotta stuffed into the crust and topped with fresh sausage, cup pepperoni, mozzarella, black pepper, and extra virgin olive oil. I also noticed them putting fresh basil on top of the sauce while they were making it. I'm not sure if that's standard for all of their pizzas since it wasn't mentioned on the menu like everything else, but it might be given that that's pretty common ingredient in Neapolitan pizza.
It's no exaggeration to say that this is one of the best pizzas I've ever had and I can only think of one other pizza that would be close to as good or on par. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, the cook on the pizza was perfect, and every flavor had its chance to shine. Stuffing the crust with ricotta is such an amazing upgrade over mozzarella stuffed crusts from fast food chains and I wish other places would do it. The pizza's definitely pricier at $30.95 than any other pizza I've paid for, but it was worth every penny.
If you have a chance to sit in front of the pizza oven, request to do so. It's like getting a show with dinner watching them make the pizzas.
