Best Pizza in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"This nationally renowned South Philly pizzeria is unforgettable in its approach, style, and taste. They’re particularly known for Mexican pizzas, classic pies topped with ingredients inspired by Mexican cuisine, like jalapeños, chorizo, cilantro, lime, and more." - Annemarie Dooling

Where To Eat Mexican Pizza In Philly

"We’re big fans of South Philly’s San Lucas Pizza. Everything from their tacos and quesadillas to loaded-up huaraches is consistently good. We’d also start a fan club for the pizza here, especially the Pizza San Lucas and Pizza Alambre. The first blends stewed chicken, jalapeños, onion, and Mexican cheese, and the latter is a mashup of juicy steak, chiles, and melty queso fundido. And since most pizzas here are spicy enough to give your mouth a subtle burn, never leave without a Mexican Coke or bottle of Sidral from the fridge. " - candis mclean

Google
May be the best pizza I’ve had! I got the Al pastor pizza, it’s spicy, full of meat and cilantro and dressed with some lime it’s absolutely perfect! I ordered for pick up and it was super quick, I think it took about 10 mins max. The prices are affordable too given that this large pizza will be my dinner for 3-4 days! Mexican style pizzas are always top of my list, I used to go to Pizza Mixta and while that one is awesome this place may take the cake!!

Google
Off the wall mashup of Mexican and pizza but boy, does it work! These pizzas are loaded and are sensational, one slice will totally fill you up. Oh, and the Stromboli is also fantastic. Minimal seating at the restaurant itself, but perfect for to-go or perfect if you could just plop out of the table and consume it there.

Google
Crust and fresh toppings are unreal. Best Hawaiian pizza I’ve ever had. Al pastor pizza was amazing and very rich. Definitely ordering again.

Google

Recently came to San Lucas Pizza for lunch, i’ve been wanting to try it for a while now. The staff is vary friendly and accommodating, I order a cheesesteak and a plain cheese slice. The pizza was average nothing to really brag about still a tasty slice, the cheesesteak was simple but yet delicious a Philly traditional. Overall pretty decent food with reasonable prices definitely will return in the future some of the other pizza they make look very interesting.

Google
i love this place. tbh i've never tried their mexican pizza but i've gotten their chicken fingers so many times and they are scrumptious, just perfect chicken fingers. they're always fresh out of the fryer, perfectly crispy and soft on the inside, and not greasy at all somehow. also the place itself is super cute, i love the green paint and the plants and the touches of family. great vibes inside and the staff are all really sweet. one day i WILL try their mexican pizza bc it smells delicious inside

Google
Al pastor pizza, wow , everything I love on one slice. Guadijo sauce, a really nice amount of chopped cilantro, and a ton of meat on a Barstool approved regular slice thats nice and crispy. Really happy I found this place. Family owned and there definitely putting there heart into there food

Jenna Miele

Google
The pizza is unreal!!! Best crust/dough i’ve ever had. We got a half Carnitas, half Mexicana pizza and not a single crumb was left when we were done. We will definitely be back to try all the other pizzas!

Yelp
It wasn't what I expected, but if you want great Mexican food piled on top of huge slices of great pizza, come here! Service was friendly and the place was really small with limited seating. I'd also suggest calling ahead if ordering a whole pizza. It was really good.

Yelp
Ordered a pizza for delivery on a lazy Friday night. My husband and I shared a small Al Pastor and got 3 loaded slices each. The pizza was delicious but only seem to have chicken, onion and cilantro as toppings while I was expecting some pineapple (if nothing else) too. Overall a solid place to get take out/delivery in South Philly.

Yelp
Veggies Pizza $15 for 10 inches - Pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, black olives, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, broccoli, avocado Pineapple, Pepperoni & Jalapeño Pizza $14.50 for 10 inches Both pizza were average. Nothing special. Did like that the veggies had avocados. Asked for the pineapple one to be left in a little longer. Not sure if it was. Was still kind of soggy. Not likely to crave coming back but if someone else wanted to try, I would oppose.

Yelp
Slice, Slice Baby: A Fusion of Flavors at San Lucas Pizzeria! I had very high expectations for San Lucas Pizzeria, and they were almost all met! I heard about this place through social media, with many claiming it to be the best pizza spot in Philly. While I'm not sure I'd call it the best, it certainly offers a unique and flavorful experience. When you first walk in, you're greeted by a no-frills, mom-and-pop vibe. The dine-in area is tiny and feels a bit dated, but it has its charm as a classic corner shop. We opted for takeout, so I can't speak much to the dine-in atmosphere beyond that. Now, onto the pizzas! I ordered the Pizza San Lucas and the Pizza Al Pastor. The San Lucas Pizza was solid, but considering it's their signature dish, I expected a bit more. It was on the thicker side, which some might love, but I prefer a thinner crust. The flavors were okay, but I felt like the toppings didn't quite come together or could have used a bit more seasoning. However, the Pizza Al Pastor was the standout! The flavors were rich and well-balanced, and despite the thicker crust, it totally won me over. The toppings were plentiful and bold, and it was an overall delightful fusion of Mexican and Italian flavors. While it's not the best pizza I've had in Philly, I certainly wasn't disappointed. If I lived within walking distance, I'd definitely be a regular. San Lucas Pizzeria is worth a try, especially for those curious about fusion pizzas with a twist.

Yelp
Wow!!! The torta is made with fresh bread at the establishment what a huge delicious sandwich. We had a slice of Mexicana pizza and al pastor. The sauce is a little Spicey. Very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a scheduled delivery via grub hub for after a workout. I got the large pastor pizza as was only a few dollars more. The pizza got better with every bite! Pastor pizza seems to be their best seller and I can definitely see why. Also plenty of meat on each slice so it is very filling as well.

Yelp
Look at this! Looook at it!!!! Is it a pizza taco? Is it a Mexican pizza? The service was excellent (according to NYT the co owner), such nice people! 3 tables for sit down, which we didn't. It's housed in South Philly, I love this food! It is so different and fun!

Yelp
I applaud the uniqueness and variety of pizza options, but the crust is real let down. Pizza also was drier than desired. Can't comment on ambiance because ordered take out. Delivery service was good.

Yelp
Good place for Mexican-style pizza. Dough and crust was not that remarkable, but we liked the al pastor and the mexicana pizzas. Very affordable prices and the family who run the place is friendly and helpful. I can see why this would appeal to NY Times list-makers, as it is interesting and a good example of what Mexican-style pizza can be. However, I would wager most folks would not have place in their "22 best pizzas in the US" list. A nice and different experience from most pizza places in South Philly, but not really a pizza that I would crave or return to regularly.

Wayne W.

Yelp
Probably very good. We ordered from here after reading the reviews of their pizzas. Unfortunately, after we placed our order, we learned they will not modify a pizza from the ingredients listed on the menu, so we canceled our order. Too bad. We've never had a problem adding or removing ingredients on a pizza, either with or without a change in price, from any other place, ever.

Aaron W.

Yelp
My wife and I ordered a small pizza that looked great on the menu. Normally, a small pizza costs around 11 dollars at any comparable pizza shop. What we got was a personal pan pizza for $14.60!! These prices are insane and pizza falsely advertised on the menu. One slice of pizza 7 bucks, really?. We only went there cause Pesto Pizzeria on Broad st. was closed where we get a delicious Italian 10 in. pizza with around 3 toppings for 14dollars. We feel quite bamboozled, it wasn't even all that. Don't be fooled.

Leandra F.

Yelp
I think this place may be overwhelmed with more orders now that they got written up by the nyt as one of the best pizza places in the country, bc they are not always sticking to their open hours and what I had last night definitely didn't live up to expectations. We got the deluxe and the pineapple/jalapeño/pepperoni so maybe those were the wrong choices but honestly I would describe both as just "fine." Definitely not worth the hype, the steep price, or how long we waited for nearby delivery (about an hour and a half). The crust seemed slightly underdone too so maybe they're rushing. I may give this place another try in a while, bc of my suspicions that temporary overwhelm may be at play, but for now sticking with my nearby favorite la rosas

Yelp
From the outside, it doesn't look like much - like your typical South Philly corner store bodega. Honestly, from the inside it is also quite unassuming - but the pizza is excellent. The first visit was well over 6 months to a year ago, but only because I don't live in the area. The first visit we had the Pizza San lucas. Last week we got the Special San Lucas 18" Large pie comes to about $25 with tax. This pizza was soooo good. The crust is thin and crispy. Whatever they marinate the shrimp in is delicious, and the shrimp was legitimately perfectly cooked - very juicy and plump shrimp. You wouldn't think that shrimp, hot sauce, cilantro, pico de gallo or avocado would work on the pizza - but I assure you it does. This is one of my favorite pizzas I've ever had from any pizza shop at all. This would honestly be a 5 star review except for 1 constructive criticism. They leave the shell tail of the shrimp on the pizza, which makes eating the pizza a bit messy to pick each shrimp off to eat, then bite the pizza. I would love if I could just take a huge bite out of the pizza. Outside of that - it's an excellent pizza shop with friendly service.

Yelp
so-so crust with tasty Mexican toppings. tiny place best for takeout. super friendly folks

Yelp
Amazing Buffalo Chicken Pizza! Pizza was perfectly crispy. Called for delivery and they said 35 minutes and came exactly in 35 minutes! Will definitely be ordering more pizza from them!
google avatar

Zareena M.

Yelp
do not get the plain cheese. it did not taste like a traditional pizza, the sauce was not a regular marinara & the dough was fluffy.
google avatar

Gwendolyn P.

Yelp
We had a really nice experience here with slices of pizza that were ginormous and delicious! I made the mistake of thinking that one slice of pizza was not enough. Boy was I wrong! Plenty of leftovers. Well done San Lucas.
google avatar

Kathryn A.

Yelp
I was drawn to this restaurant through yelp. The set up inside is not what I was expecting. It looks like a pizza take out place where you speak through a glass. The pizza itself has good flavor, I see why everyone raves about this place, but the crust and bread is too doughy, thick, and soft for my liking.
google avatar

Aurelia M.

Yelp
This spot is like a hole in the wall to me. It's not much from outside nor inside. But for those who know where to get a real Mexican style pizza, this is where they would go instead of you know which. Their al pastor pizza is what a Mexican would dream of! Spicy, lots of toppings, and fresh limes, you could even request slices of avocado, what could be better? Oh I know, their ranchero pizza is just as special. I've tried their chicken buffalo, and bbq chicken pizza, both are also amazing! Their mozzarella cheese fries is so good, especially when it's hot. Delivery time may varies, sometimes it could take longer or faster, but it's worth waiting for. Love this place!
google avatar

Sari Marissa G.

Yelp
Tiny hole in the wall corner spot deep in South Philly offering tasty, very unique large slices, tacos and other Mexican inspired nosh like salads and cheesesteaks . No set menu to see online, you just have to go in and see what they're offering that day. *They do sell pies but we have only stopped in for slices. Hubs said his BBQ chicken was one of the best he's had! Al Pastor is another fan favorite. Hawaiian is a close second. There's only about 3-two top tables inside along with a tv so it's more of a grab and go situation. Slight language barrier, but the guys are always friendly. Prices are very reasonable especially for portion size. They DO accept cards. Unmetered South Philly style street parking. Definitely worth a shot if you're nearby.

Shayna M.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! so unassuming a hole in the wall. the pizza was awesome and the mozz sticks were other worldly.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
I'd they are in business, they were not when I walked a half mile to go here during their advertised business hours. Based on the appearance outside, it looks shut down.
google avatar

Raj D.

Yelp
Great local flavor, I've passed this place at least a thousand times, but the other day a couple of dudes were lounging a couple of blocks down the street eating some pizza from their van that they had gotten here. They were the happiest pizza eaters I'd ever seen, and the pizza looked loaded-it was chorizo with black beans avacodos, jalapeños and cilantro. They highly recommended this San Lucas, so I finally tried it. It was delicious. So much chorizo I could scrape half of it off for breakfast the next day. Jalapeños and avocados were fresh and flavorful. Don't pass this place by as many times as I have if you live around point breeze. Super friendly people there and great pride in their ingredients also

Yelp
Just moved to the neighbor and found this delicious take out spot! REALLY yummy beef and chicken burritos, and pizza is great too! It was a pleasant surprise...def gonna be my go-to spot for quick meals!
google avatar

N H.

Yelp
This place has awesome pizza but if you want plain like cheese or pepperoni pizza, this is not the spot. They are good at what they do - Mexican specialty pizza. Stick with ordering what they're strong on and you will not be disappointed. This little place is family-owned & operated. I've practically watched their kids grow up in the front dining area. Speaking of a dining area, it's really just for waiting, not for eating. Do yourself a favor and get your order to go. They have a small selection of domestic and Hispanic beverages, long distance calling cards, and assorted candy.
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
I like going to San Lucas Pizza because my experience has always found the establishment to be very clean and friendly with tasty-good food. Today I wanted something quick and lite, so I ordered the beef tacos for take-out. I was absolutely amazed when opened the package. They were authentic steak tacos accompanied with fresh limes and grilled scallions. The best I've ever had.... and always get the loaded cheese fries. This place is simply the best!
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
The only pizza I want to eat now is Mexican pizza from San Lucas! I can never decide which I like better- Al Pastor or Ranchero pizza, they are both so delicious. The Al Pastor has a little spicy kick to the sauce and they don't ever skimp on the toppings. I recently tried their regular Mexican food and I was not disappointed! The tacos are STUFFED, their salsas are great, and the quasadilla was the best one I've ever had. You know how they tend to be just a tortilla with dry chicken inside and a ton of cheese? San Lucas comes with crema and this amazing red sauce, plus fresh tomatoes and jalapeños inside, and juicy chicken. I tried delivery twice and it took such a long time but everyone was in love with the pizza, they said it was worth the wait. Try to pick up if possible.
google avatar

Yelp
San Lucas is tucked away in a poorly-lit neighborhood in South Philly, and if it weren't for my craving for really good pizza and Yelp, I would have never known about this hidden gem. While there aren't many reviews, I was drawn in by the incorporation of Mexican food with pizza and had to check this place out. I ordered the pizza al Pastor for take out and my only regret is that I didn't order a large (*I ordered the small which is plenty for 1 person and maybe even 2, but the leftovers are worth saving for all to yourself!) This pizza is ridiculous. They take normal pizza dough and magically created a new breed of pizza. It's really mind-boggling. I couldn't decide if was eating was a pizza or a taco, or... I don't even know- The spicy sauce perfectly pairs with the carne al pastor which is topped with melted cheese, fresh cilantro and red onions- a brilliant combination. We also ordered the Hawaiian, which was still better than the average pizza joint, but I'd much rather order one of San Lucas' creations unless you're craving a more 'traditional' pizza. And lastly, the prices are great. For two small pizzas, the total was $13.50, but it's CASH ONLY! We had to run to an ATM because we didn't realize this on our first visit. I'd have to say that this is one of the best finds I've come across on Yelp.

Siniyah S.

Yelp
The food is soooo good! Literally some of the best food in south Philly. The wait time was good, Idea for taking food to go. The food is authentic and seasoned very well.
google avatar

Lina K.

Yelp
Simply amazing, the food was great and succulent, the staff is friendly and gets everything right
google avatar

Alex X.

Yelp
Four stars for creativity with the eclectic toppings. Three stars for the pizza itself. I had ranchos pizza, which is better than average pizza because you get to play with trying to get all the toppings in your mouth without tipping over. I am not into Mexican food much because I have those unusual taste buds than everyone else. Lol. I might try something else next time. Maybe Hawaiian pizza. But for pizza itself, Im still a Lorenzo's (South Street) pizza girl.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
These toppings are nuts. If you've ever wondered what Mexican food tastes like on pizza, look no further. Genius. This shit is not expensive. The large pizza is ginormous, and costs about $16 with all the crazy special toppings (al pastor! but only if you like raw onions). I think it's more like $9 for a huge plain. Cheap and pretty good crust/cheese too, especially for Philly pizza. Can't speak for the sauce, the al pastor comes with deliciously spicy salsa roja instead of normal tomato. I will most definitely be back to try the Alambre: cheesesteak, bacon, peppers, and onions. Mmm. I'm salivating just thinking about it.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
The pizza is fantastic. Try the al pastor unless you have that cilantro soap taste thing.
google avatar

Zachary W.

Yelp
A friend who used to live in philly told us about a pizza spot off Snyder that he used to frequent 10 years ago that was incredible. He couldnt remember the name so we googled the area and this spot popped up. Not sure if this is the place or not but in either event his recommendation lead us here and we are grateful. Super light dough. Cheesy. Very delicious and affordable. Also as one reviewer mentioned they do accept credit cards. We just ordered the cheese pizza. Next time we will try something a little more adventurous.

Erin C.

Yelp
Everything was cold by the time it got here because apparently early the delivery driver decided to take two hours to deliver my food.
google avatar

Jenn L.

Yelp
3 words: Buffalo. Chicken. Pizza! I'm always hunting for the perfect chicken buffalo pizza and this place delivers just that! Yummy!

V K.

Yelp
This place is amazing with delicious pizzas! Their Mexicana pizza is a must have along with the Hawain. Friendly little gem and I will be coming back for sure!

zoe s.

Yelp
This is amazing pizza. Sorry... but probably the best pizza I have had in Philly...ever! The Al Pastor is my favorite. The Mexican burger is awesome also! The biggest hand made patty I have seen and jalapenos all over it! So good, so cheap and the people who run the place are very nice. Not a lot of room to sit in or dine, but great take out.

Sam F.

Yelp
San Lucas has great food, but their biggest problem is that they're never open. Almost every time I try to call and place an order there's no answer, they always open later than their hours say and close earlier than they say as well. Basically store hours don't apply here because they'll open whenever they feel like it. Get your business together and maybe try to open on time or stay open until your hours state instead of closing 4 hours early.
google avatar

Karenina W.

Yelp
I went there once, and it was amazing. I now go at least twice a week, because not only are the toppings incredible and the food delicious (beans, chorizo, and veggies on a light fluffy crust? genuis!) but it's also damn cheap! I can't believe this place has been open for 5 years and more hipsters haven't discovered it.
google avatar

Amina C.

Yelp
This was one of the most original pieces of pizza I'd ever eaten, and it was delicious. A huge piece of al pastor pizza with handmade cheese pizza on the bottom, hot sauce and the al pastor fillings that normally go in a taco on top. The toppings were super freshly made (I watched him) and he put a ton of the pork, pineapple, onion and cilantro topping. Putting lime on a pizza was odd but the taste was amazing!! Cannot be beaten for $3.
google avatar

Henry N.

Yelp
Have the best BBQ chicken pizza. Good price for any size pizza you wish to get and I'm a favorite of their cheese fries.

Shannon C.

Yelp
How can I nominate this for best pizza in Philadelphia (al pastor)? Seriously, I am addicted.
