Mission-style burritos, tortas, vegan options & aguas frescas

"“These are Mission-style burritos, really big and just amazing. I’m more of a burrito bowl person, but when I first went there, I’m like, ‘Okay, they’re known for their burritos, let me have the burrito.’ They are so flavorful. All of the sauces are made from scratch. I do the Super Burrito. It has rice. I get it with chicken and cheese. All of the sauces. My husband gets [his filled with their] ‘drunken mushrooms.’ Their quesadillas are amazing. Their guacamole is amazing. There are lots of things for vegetarians. It’s just solid. There’s no work that you have to do to get it right at this place, which is the best possible way to do it.”" - brennan carley
"San Pancho is buzzing with people most weekdays, making it feel like the go-to spot in Takoma Park. The shop serves comfort food like California burritos stuffed with charred carne asada and shoestring fries, plus super quesadillas piled high with guac and melted cheese. Order at the counter before scrambling for a seat inside or on the patio—seriously, good luck after 6pm. The food comes out quick (like, under 10 minutes quick) and while it’s maybe the closest you’ll get to Mission-style burritos in the DMV, your San Francisco friend will still insist it’s not quite as good as anything back home. "I found that San Pancho, opened in Takoma Park by Cielo Rojo co-owners Carolina McCandless and executive chef David Perez, is a brightly decorated 980-square-foot Mission-style burrito shop featuring photographs of San Francisco taquerias; burritos come in six styles (regular, super, vegan, California, baby, and bean and cheese) priced from $9–$18 (or seven if you count the burrito bowl), with four breakfast burrito options served weekdays 8–11:30 a.m. and weekends 10 a.m.–12 p.m.; the California-style burritos use pinto beans, Mexican rice, melted cheese, lots of onions and cilantro, and flour tortillas that are made in Mexico and imported from Texas." - Emily Venezky

"After a breakfast taco craze washed over the D.C. area, the Californian co-owners of Cielo Rojo are ushering in the age of breakfast burritos. The Mission District-styled snacks sold out during the shop’s opening weekend after running out of its signature Sonoran-style tortillas. Breakfast burritos include chorizo, barbacoa, and vegan options that diners can “make super,” adding guacamole and sour cream. Round out your brunch with aquas frescas or horchata incorporated into cold brew and lattes." - Tierney Plumb, Emily Venezky
