Seven Spirits: Mexican spirits, cocktails, frozen drinks, tacos

"Owner Jose de Loera turned what was his East Austin Mexican restaurant Takoba into this counter-service bar that serves up Mexican spirits, which includes a wide selection of mezcals. Customers can order flights of spirits for a boozy educational experience while admiring the large mural dominating the back wall and munching on bar snacks like nopal cactus fries and tacos. Neffi, who was formerly a stray kitten rescued by de Loera, roams the bar. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Clara Wang

"An East Seventh bar that opened in September 2023, representing the continued growth of mezcal-focused spots in Austin." - Clara Wang

"Located at 1411 East Seventh Street, Seven Spirits opened in late July as a counter-service bar devoted to the alcoholic spirits of Mexico. I learned that alongside popular tequila, mezcal, and sotol the menu highlights lesser-known agave and regional spirits such as raicilla (from Jalisco), bacanora (from Sonora), pox (pronounced “posh,” a whiskey-like corn-and-wheat spirit), and charanda (a rum-ish sugar‑cane spirit). Cocktails and frozen drinks make use of those spirits — examples include the Marquesita (pox with strawberries, raspberries, and clarified Greek yogurt), a tamarind Negroni with raicilla, tamarind‑Campari mix, vermouth and Chamoy, and a frozen Guava Lava with mezcal, orange liqueur, guava, lemon and lime — and there are straight-up spirit flights as well. The counter‑service food menu features Mexican dishes like nopal fries, tuna tostada, a plethora of tacos (pork belly, carne asada, fish, etc.) and tortas (including a Cuban with pork belly and ham and an eggplant option). Run by Takoba owner Jose de Loera with operations manager Peter Ponce and co-partner David Blauer, the bar was created to honor and showcase these Mexican liquors; it occupies Takoba’s former back section while the front area is not yet in use. The space also includes bar cat Neffi, and hosts events such as a mezcal tasting on Saturday, September 30 from 1 to 5 p.m.; general hours are 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday." - Nadia Chaudhury
"Seven Spirits is a cocktail bar on East 7th Street. The drink menu is largely agave-based—including a few frozens—and there are a handful of flights if you want to learn a little more about mezcal, and write the whole night off as an “educational experience.” There’s also a small food menu where you can get tacos, empanadas, and tostadas, or an order of guacamole topped with salsa macha and toasted grasshoppers." - Nicolai McCrary

"A newly unveiled mezcal-focused bar at the same 1411 East 7th Street address opened in March ahead of SXSW, occupying the former Cantina El Milamores space. The bar highlights mezcal along with beer and cocktails and offers several of the restaurant’s food items—tacos, flautas, and chile rellenos—providing a casual drink-and-food complement to the main dining room." - Nadia Chaudhury
