The Best Mezcal Bars in Austin

"Owner Jose de Loera turned what was his East Austin Mexican restaurant Takoba into this counter-service bar that serves up Mexican spirits, which includes a wide selection of mezcals. Customers can order flights of spirits for a boozy educational experience while admiring the large mural dominating the back wall and munching on bar snacks like nopal cactus fries and tacos. Neffi, who was formerly a stray kitten rescued by de Loera, roams the bar. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Clara Wang

Seven Spirits - Review - East Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Seven Spirits is a cocktail bar on East 7th Street. The drink menu is largely agave-based—including a few frozens—and there are a handful of flights if you want to learn a little more about mezcal, and write the whole night off as an “educational experience.” There’s also a small food menu where you can get tacos, empanadas, and tostadas, or an order of guacamole topped with salsa macha and toasted grasshoppers." - Nicolai McCrary

New favorite place in the neighborhood. Very cool vibe with awesome patios in the front and back. Great food, delicious cocktails and frozen margs, solid draft beer selection, and service is always friendly. Plus, you can't beat their happy hour specials... $3 Electric Jellyfish and $5 mango habanero margarita. Seriously!

I have had the best experience ever here. No bs. I met one of the owners, Jose, super legit, one of the real ones in town. The service was superb. Bar tenders told me about the concept of the bar, the 7 different spirts that comes from México. *I had "The Spirits Guide"* y'all should check it out. I havent even had this experience in México. This is a gem for the east downtown. Then I had 2 amazing beef tacos for $2 effing dollards!!. Dude, the "Spirits Guide" comes with cheeze, chocolate, chapulines and orange slices, plus 7 shots for $35, and then 2 huge tacos for $2 dlls! there's no better deal in town. Y'all should definitely come and check it out, hands down!

Seven Spirits is the best kept secret on the east side! I've been here a couple of times for happy hour (4-6pm for the curious reader). Unreal prices, $5 for a frozen cocktail, $3 Electric Jellyfish, you can't beat it. The space is also super cool, the back patio feels very jungly (definitely a few mosquitoes but they've got you covered with bug spray which is clutch). Lastly, the two times I've been Chance has been the bartender and he's an awesome dude. He's super friendly and remembered all of our names, so much so that when a buddy joined mid way through he assumed that Chance and I knew each other. 10/10 would recommend. I hesitate to leave this kind of review because I don't want to blow up the spot but honestly these guys deserve it. Thanks for a great time and here's to many more! Cheers, John

Seven Spirits is my favorite mezcal bar in Austin! I come here at least once a month and always have a good experience catching up with their amazing bartender Chance. They have delicious carne asada and al pastor tacos, which is not surprising as this business is from the makers of Takoba. They also have unique appetizers like guacamole with grasshoppers, cactus fries, and ricotta empanadas. The name of the bar comes from the seven spirits (liquors) of Mexico: tequila, mezcal, sotol, pox, bacanora, raicilla, and charanda. They have cocktails that highlight each of the spirits, mezcal tastings, beers (Mexican and local favorites like Electric Jellyfish), and mocktails that aren’t just juice! My favorite cocktails are the Monkey Business and the Meztik, though I’ve tried them all and have yet to have a bad one. Their frozens are also amazing on a hot day! They play a good mix of Mexican rock, cumbias, reguetón, and American music. Best of all, they just kicked off their Latin Nights on Thursdays with great drink specials. On other nights, they have both a regular and late night happy hour. They have a dimly lit interior, which is perfect for date night, as well as an outdoor patio with string lights. Regardless of where you sit, the ambiance is warm and inviting. 100% recommend this mezcal bar over others in town that can’t even speak to what they’re serving.

Fantastic selection of Mexican spirits carefully explained with a map and tasting notes. Excellent service, delicious cocktails and great specials and happy hour deals (4-6 Tues-Fri). Highly recommended.

I came here to check out the Cinco de Mayo festivities! It’s such a cozy spot. The bar service is a bit slow in the front, but they usually have a back bar that’s a lot more accessible. My Paloma was delicious along with the guacamole. The carne asada tacos were bland but a big protein portion.

Me and my boyfriend came here for his birthday. The bartender was amazing, very knowledgeable about the drinks and was very fun to have a conversation with. The drinks were spectacular and the food was very impressive! We got the pastor taco and empanada and both were 10/10 — the pastor taco had pineapple on them just like how they do it in Mexico! I’m not a huge drinker but I got the Mango Habanero frozen, I love the spicy after taste. Took sips of my bf’s drink as well — he got, Marquesita and if you’re into sweet drinks this is for you! He also got Meztik which was smokey and citrusy which is not my cup of tea but my bf said it was great! This place is very new so we didn’t have to wait for seats. Would definitely go back!

Google
Super hip bar with lots of good looking people but without the pretension and WITH a friendly and fast and generous bartending crew. Tasty little tacos, inventive drinks. And beer on tap for the lunkheads like me. Great back patio. Awesome place to meet up with friends who live in the neighborhood. Also great to return after a treatment down the road at Chulel Corrective Bodywork! Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
This place is so cute! The bartender explained they offer seven different varieties of tequilas / mezcals and other similar spirits and the drink menu looks incredible! We came for the happy hour which is EVERYDAY !!! From 4:30/5 to 6 pm!! They have $3 electric jellyfish (insane) and $5 frozen mango habanero margaritas (delicious) The patio is huge - lots of tables and so nicely set up! The succulents between the tables are such a cute touch - also dogs are allowed on the patio outside! Honestly our new spot for happy hour and a nice patio to bring our pup!

Yelp
Visited Seven Spirits for the first time last week for there first anniversary event. The 77 cent Paloma's were cold, delicious, and on point. It only that, I tried their pork belly tacos, which were a little pricy (I think $14 for 2 tacos?) but worth every penny.

Yelp
How have we been sleeping on the best happy hour in Austin?? $3 beers every day from 5-7?! And kind service from bartender, Chance? See you tomorrow.

Yelp
An incredible new bar that opened recently on East Austin! Had the great privilege of experiencing their grand opening. The staff and owner are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The drinks are unique and delicious! I think I tried almost all the drinks and I enjoyed all of them! I really enjoyed the MEZTIK in particular, but be aware of the spice from the habanero bitters! I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the tacos are. The fish tacos were sooooo good. I would come back for this alone! The tuna tostada was another highlight of the night too! I love the look of the bar and they had a nice outdoor patio too. Support your small businesses!!

Yelp
Really enjoyed this new spot. Came and saw them the first few days they first opened up, and typically, during the soft opening, you'll see a lot of issues. However, this was the opposite with Seven Spirits. The owner, David, was there and sat with us and spoke to us about coming up with this concept, their future plans, and then told us what to order. The amount of passion and thoroughness that went into Seven Spirits is super impressive - all the way down to the acoustics & volume of the music in the spot. we tried guacamole | 10 - chips, salsa macha, chapulines (grasshoppers) roasted carrots | 8 - pepita salsa verde *these were amaaaazing* cuban torta | 11 - pork belly, honey ham, pickle, muenster, dijon, bolillo roll This is a crazy statement, but those carrots... were some of the best carrots I've ever had. Holy moly. And to think they were from a bar is hilarious.

Yelp
This gem is relatively new to the East side so it is a great place to grab a cocktail on a Saturday night without waiting in a line. That said, the cocktails are worth waiting for. My favorite is the Meztik in which several flavors complement the mezcal base. Another stand out creation is the Tamarind Negroni. If you want dessert try the Marquesita which manages to taste like strawberry cheesecake due to straining through Greek yogurt. The food menu is short but includes some great items. The guacamole has added texture from roasted grasshoppers ( you wouldn't recognize them if you weren't told). The Cuban torta is delicious with pork belly instead of roast pork. The decor is very stylish and the staff are knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. There is a small front deck facing a side street so it is a cool place to hang out. The only negative is that they use plastic cups for water. Enjoy Seven Spirits before everyone discovers it and it is overrun.

Yelp
A proper idea for a bar can be ruined when the service and staff don't mean the bare level of decorum.

Yelp
Wow cocktails have gotten pricey! Maybe I don't go out enough. This relatively new bar is cute and has a good vibe. There's an indoor space and outdoor patio. The bartenders unfortunately were not welcoming and not very helpful, but the drinks were good. My favorite was the frozen guava lava. I also got the Sonoran sour, which I probably wouldn't choose again but it was a unique drink to try once. $35 for two drinks is steep to me, but it must be the new going rate downtown.

Yelp
Intimate spot to grab a drink away from the crowd on East 6th. Chance the bartender was spectacular & recommended the empanada's...SO GOOD. This is THE place to go if you like tequila.

Yelp
This was the first time coming here. As we were looking at the menu deciding what to order we were suddenly sprayed in the face with water from the bartender. The bartender's reaction was first giving us a small napkin. As he saw us leaving the bar, he came over to speak to us about the menu. After speaking with us about the menu, he said our drinks would be free due to the fact that my shirt and face were soaked from the water that was sprayed moments before. After my fiance ordered her drink free of charge he turned to me and asked, "alright cowboy what do you want?" After making the drink he looked at me and said "I'm going to have to charge you for that one." To our surprise after stating our drinks were free, we had to pay for one after being sprayed in the face with water and after we were told that both of our drinks would be free of charge due to the incident. We do not recommend coming back here.

Yelp
The music, ambience and drinks. A hidden gem!! Excellent spirit selection focused on tequilas and mezcals. A bailar!!

Yelp
We got here early waiting for some friends and were immediately greeted by David who was so friendly and attentive. The whole menu looked amazing and it totally was. Drinks have quality ingredients and the food leaves you wanting more. You NEED to try the Al pastor and carne asada tacos! Don't skip out on the carrots too. They are on the menu for a reason. We were always fans of Takoba and were sad when they closed but this place and the ambiance here is perfect. Plenty of space and AC. 10/10 will be making this my home base bar.

Yelp
Best guac I've had in.... Possibly ever. Frozen drinks were on point, not overly sweet, just the way I like it. You can tell they use fresh ingredients in both drink and food. Not sure if they've changed out staff (Ive read a previous review) but the night I went, bartenders were attentive and welcoming. Clean, comfortable spot

Yelp
Patio has some vibes. Drinks so-so. Bouncer is the friendliest person there. Both bartenders were absolutely miserable and unfriendly, couldn't answer questions about drinks, and just stared into space while you ordered. Left at the same time as 3 other parties, everyone outside said they were leaving because of bar staff.
