This Bayside gem serves up Shanghai specialties like irresistibly juicy soup dumplings and perfectly crispy Peking Duck, all in a cozy, bustling atmosphere.
"This second, more luxuriant branch of a Shanghai dumpling specialist in Flushing (Shanghai You Garden) offers some of the best XLB in the city, with some particularly crabby pork-and-crab examples, in addition to other venerable Shanghai types of buns and dumplings. It has also jumped on the mega-XLB bandwagon, offering an outsize example (shown), one to a steamer, with a plastic straw to suck a huge quantity of soup out. The dumpling skin is super thick, resembling more of a bread bowl than a dumpling." - Robert Sietsema
"This Shanghai restaurant in Bayside, Queens, serves the best soup dumplings in town. Smaller than usual, they’re thin skinned and bulging with a delicate gravy. With a fuller menu than its Flushing branch, it features a range of Shanghai specialties, including small plates, noodles, soups, and bigger feeds like braised pork shoulder, sweet and sour sea bass, and eel in hot oil." - Robert Sietsema
"Shanghai You Garden is named after the Yu Garden in the Old City section of Shanghai, which borders one of the longest-standing xiao long bao spots called Nanxiang Bun Shop. At their Bayside location (the original is in Flushing), you can choose between 10 varieties of xiao long bao, all dyed with different colors so you’ll be able to tell what you’re eating from the exterior, tender skin. Our favorites are the classic, bright-yellow crab and pork (which taste noticeably crabbier than most other versions in the city) and a giant thick-skinned version where you slurp the soup out of a straw. Get a bunch, cheers with your friends, and then proceed to suck out the meaty soup out of a gargantuan straw. Make sure to order a plate of pan-fried pork buns that have a thick exterior and crispy bottoms." - Hannah Albertine
"The best soup dumplings in town are found east of Flushing in Bayside, Queens, at You Garden Xiao Long Bao. It’s an offshoot of the elegant Flushing You Garden, and dumpling master Zhou Jianhua, who once worked at the legendary Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao, presides over the dumpling program. The soup dumplings are not particularly large, but bulge extravagantly with amazing broth. Also, don’t miss fried bean gluten, sweet sticky rice roll, Peking duck bao (though not a Shanghai specialty), yin-yang soup, or lion’s head meatballs. 4107 Bell Blvd., between 41st and 42nd avenues, Bayside" - Robert Sietsema
"The new You Garden Xiao Long Bao in Bayside adds a few exemplary dishes to its downtown Flushing menu, some in a soup vein. This wonderful potage ($15.95), enough for four to share, is configured in a yin yang shape, and thus must be carried across the room very carefully by the waiter. It tastes of crab and cilantro, and the minute you’re finished eating it, you’ll crave another bowl." - Eater Staff
