The 15 Best Restaurants In Savannah, Georgia

"While there are plenty of soul food spots in the historic district, Sisters of the New South is an option we really like in Victory Heights, with its bright blue tables and a tree mural on the wall. They serve dishes you might expect to see at a family gathering or holiday, like fried chicken and slow-cooked oxtails, all made from recipes that have been passed down for generations. It’s perfect for a casual lunch or dinner, especially if you add on some of the standout seafood options—like shrimp and grits and fried oysters with a side of collard greens and yams. Finish it all with some peach cobbler, caramelized to perfection with a crunchy crust." - caroline eubanks

Today I ordered collards, Mac and cheese, and fried chicken. I lost my receipt, a ,"young" lady who rang me up did not tell me my total or say thank you, this is due to lack of training 😉. The food was fair the greens were tender but very oily and cooked with a generous dossing of sugar. In my opinion (sugar) does not need to be in greens. I like my greens tender and flavored with cooking meat, no cooking meat was present in the serving of greens. I think some upgrades in presentation, and taste would be more appealing for dining in and another visit. Overall, its okay, the chicken and Mac were indeed flavorful. One of the waiters asked me if I was a first time visitor-she gave me a discount and my plate came out to $13, a nice perk.

Home cooking with WELL seasoned food. My family and I met a beautiful family visiting from Italy 🇮🇹 and they gave us a rundown on what to order. Just so happened everyone ordered something different and shared it with each other. So we did the same. All of it was so delicious! I ordered the baked chicken, which was very tender and moist, sweet potatoes were just yummy! The taste of a hint of marshmallow was a favorite of mine. The yellow rice was just right, and the buttermilk cornbread with green beans was amazing. My husband had the smothered pork chops. I tried 😩 not to eat his food up. My sons had fried chicken and ox tails. They ate every drop, so I know they enjoyed it. We will definitely be back.

Let me tell you the food was just like Guy described it. It danced on my taste buds. The seasoning was dynamic. The service was phenomenal. Good seating. Portions were too much for me. The atmosphere was one of a kind. Come from anywhere idc to get some of the best soul food the state has to offer! OMM

I was here 4 days ago for my niece birthday celebration from NC, it’s was 9 of us, some of us wasn’t happy at all with our food. I don’t ever have to go back there again, I got fried fish with cabbage, Lima beans and tomatoes and rice my fish had no seasoning my tomatoes and rice was dry no taste, my cabbage and Lima beans was good. I had sweet potato pie, no no no. And I was so disappointed in the cleanliness of this place, I had to ask someone to clean my table off the trash can was overflowing. It was like 6ish/ 7 in the evening but it breaks my heart to see this in a place of business. I saw a mop in the kitchen that was Black/dirty omg , I was scared to go in the restroom, I hope they get this together. Please take this as constructive criticism and not a bash.

Google
Went here because we saw Guy Fieri’s recommendation and their fried chicken is the best we have ever had! The place could be better; among all could be cleaner. I would like coming back to have more of their fried chicken.

Google
If you're in Savannah, and you want real Southern Cooking without the high prices and parking problems, make your way to Sisters Of The New South. Where do I begin? They have ALL the favorites. Fried Chicken, Smothered Chicken, Greens, Sweet Potatoes...erry' thang. What you also get is owner Kenneth Brown coming out to give the history of how he and his wife opened the Restaurant. Even better for me, I love spending money in places where the dollars go back into the community, paying for college students, working moms and more

Google
I really hope that the property owners consider investing in improvements to help attract more business. If you get a chance, definitely swing by and try the fried chicken—it truly is delicious! The quality of the food is outstanding, and the service is incredibly friendly, which really adds to the experience. It’s a shame that the location is outdated, but with some updates, it Would boost business.

Google
Service was excellent and the food was seasoned to perfection. If you are looking for a fancy place to dine this isn’t it but if you want great food this is the spot. Quaint spot with charm.

Yelp
It's definitely a YES for me!!! If you are looking for some down home fiddles like Grandma use to make, then this is definitely the spot for you.... Somebody definitely put a lot of experience and love in these recipes. I ordered the collard greens and mac & cheese with lima beans and baked chicken..... I wasn't a huge fan of the baked chicken, it may have been sitting all day and lost its moisture but everything else was BUSSIN!!! My dude got the collard greens, sweet potatoes with rice and turkey legs and he had no complaints, as a matter of fact, he was not evening speaking during dinner. Now this is a " hole in the wall " type of restaurant, with a cafeteria style buffet, so all of the foods are laid out for your viewing. The desserts looked amazing as well so I will be sure to try something another time. Check them out!

Yelp
You can't get any more country or soul food then you can get here. When in Savannah and you want a full belly of southern soul food you come here. I've never had southern soul food better than this place. I suggest you try everything they serve and you will not be sorry.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want soul food that tastes like it just came out of your grandmother's kitchen on a Sunday afternoon, this is the place! It was such a nice change to go to a soul food spot that wasn't sold out of 90% of their menu. Everything I ordered was available and tasted fresh. The owner was extremely friendly & hospitable. Highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the Savannah area.

Yelp
Drove there today after looking up places to go featured on DDD. A bit out of the way but went thinking we were in for a delicious experience. Can't rate the food. Walked in, looked around at how run down and dirty it was and left. On vacation and have no desire to be sick from something. If the establishment itself looks dirty you can bet the workers don't pay attention to handwashing or having a clean kitchen either. Very disappointing as I always trusted anything DDD recommends but I'd say until some major improvements are made don't waste your time and money.

Yelp
I have been to dinner at this restaurant two nights this week. Absolutely delicious food. Fried chicken and fried shrimp. Both were one of the best I have ever had. They seem to be very busy, so you have to wait a while. Sometimes they have been out of things. Last night they didn't have peach cobbler. Tonight no Lima beans. I'm hoping to try the peach cobbler before I have to go home. But the food is authentic southern food, and it's delicious. Everything tasted homemade.

Yelp
I needed southern food - and I mean REAL southern food, so we came over to Sister's after another choice was closed unexpectedly. This is a choose your entree and pick 3 sides at the counter kind of place. The food is served in styrofoam containers, even if you choose to sit in the little room next door to eat. Now, this is hole in the wall (my favorite kind of nondescript place!) - but the kind of hole in the wall that you know is gonna be good - and this did not disappoint! I had the fried chicken and got 2 pieces, drumstick and thigh. It was crispy, juicy, and cooked to perfection. Probably how grandma would make it, IF I ever had a grandma who made fried chicken.. the collards were great, green beans nice and smoky, and Mac & cheese was homemade and cheesy. Just what I needed for southern fix. I was not a fan of the cornbread - it was dry and lackluster, but when soaking up the collard likker, it worked. You won't go for the ambiance- but don't let that deter you from trying this place for old school southern cooking.

Yelp
The combined customer service is on point even over the phone. I just came in to get the poundcake but the food smelled and looked amazing (I just had other plans already). Still great on the second try (consistency) and I found out they sell them whole, so with my birthday being in 3 weeks I now know where I'm getting my cake from.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, & cornbread! It was worth the wait and drive from Virginia on our Christmas road trip 2023. Friendly staff !
google avatar

Dejja C.

Yelp
I'm gonna tell yall the truth, this place does not have the upmost best southern food. The chicken, good n crispy only thing is it lacked that good Cajun seasoning I was expecting. & Mac and cheese is definitely not up to my standards, wayy too runny like they're going in heavy on the egg and tasted as though it had some kind of seafood seasoning in it, to me, Mac and cheese should not have a seafood seasoning in it. Cornbread reminded me of cafeteria cornbread you'd get from a convalescent buffet, but ig it was ok, wasn't too sweet, so the flavoring was acceptable. Greens, not the best greens I've tasted. Yams, they were acceptable but definitely not the best I've had. Ribs weren't tender enough, it seemed they couldn't even nail at least 1 dish here. So I'm giving 3 stars for an average meal.

Yelp
Definitely authentic Southern fare at Sisters of the New South in Savanah GA. It is nothing fancy, just good Southern food. So, they serve the food cafeteria style, 3 sides 1 meat and then they weigh it. 2 plates with 2 sweet teas was $32 which for the portions was a steal. They don't have table service or servers, but they do have a seating area and on this Sunday there was gospel music. Had turkey wings, greens, cabbage, okra, Mac n Cheese, and black eyed peas between the two plates. Everything was pretty good and they come with a piece of corn bread. My only criticism was that all the sides with the exception of the black eyed peas were sweet. Still, the food was good and filling.

Pat H.

Yelp
If you want ambiance, not your place . But if you love soul food, it is. Excellent fried chicken ( I added their gravy and superb.) it's like a buffet line where you choose your meat and sides. Corn bread wonderful and sisters of the new south's banana pudding is delicious, my #1 choice in Savannah, GA Service was at the counter and was excellent.
google avatar

Nessa B.

Yelp
Well we wanted to visit because it was on Guy's TV show...Triple D. So we parked and went in. Set up like a lunch counter type, you read the options on the wall and get your meat and 3 (sides) or your meat and 2. The seating was in the next room and limited, but there was such a sense of camaraderie and friendly faces making conversation, it was a very nice atmosphere set up like a lunch room. The owner came over and talked with each group of diners as they finished their meals talking about their restaurant journeys. Definitely a must try if you are in the area.

Yelp
If you're looking for down home cooking, look no further than Sisters of the New South! Took the family there & everyone got something they loved! My son & DIL got fried chicken. They both agreed it was the best they ever had. My husband got roast chicken & enjoyed every morsel. I got smothered pork chops that were so tender, I cut it with a plastic fork! You pick 3 sides & your meat. The cabbage was out of this world. Put this on your list!
google avatar

Yelp
I've seen this restaurant on a famous TV show so I just had to try it.. The food just melts in your mouth and it was definitely worth the 3 hr drive.

Carema M.

Yelp
The food was amazing to me. The fish,Mac and cheese, yams and collards were amazing. The last at the front desk was very nice. I t was great! You definitely need to make a stop by there. You will not be disappointed trust me.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
Great service, the ladies were super nice, the fried chicken was the best I had in the city and the Mac and cheese was the same. Downsides, banana pudding cake was kinda dry and I only got 2 pieces of chicken which was a bummer, but otherwise, definitely recommend.
google avatar

Gabriela R.

Yelp
Mmm mmm delicioso! Came here from North Florida just for the drive and lunch and the food and service dis not disappoint! Fried chicken super juicy and greens soo flavorful!
google avatar

Rebecca P.

Yelp
$48 for 2 dinner plates for a hole in the wall place? I don't think so. The food was okay- green beans from can, Mac and cheese dry, cabbage was good, corn bread dry, beef oxtails- small pieces and tough. Mine homemade was far more tender and more meat. Turkey wings- um why would you serve 1 flat and 1 tip? The tip has zero meat ! It should be 2 wings for this price. Other places on my travels charged less and have far more! Sorry but I can't justify the quantity given with the price charged.

Yelp
Got to Savannah and the first place we ventured to was Sisters. Loved that there was no wait, food was warm and ready for you to pick whatever you wanted. Portion size and selection was great. We had Turkey wings, oxtail, fried chicken, ribs and fried shrimp. Every choice was delicious. They actually had somehow run out of cups and we were dining in. The waitress came over a few mins later and took our drink orders and bought us glasses and didn't even charge us. We had to remind her at the end. Also had a super surprise that made the experience even more amazing, as we met Telma Hopkins who came at sat at the table next to us. She topped off a great experience at Sister's.
google avatar

Todd G.

Yelp
The food and service was amazing! We will be eating there again the next time we go to Savannah! This food is like home cooking only better!!!!
google avatar

Nic C.

Yelp
Love them! Wonderful staff. Beautiful artwork right down to the restroom. Highly recommend the black eyed peas. They were open on New Year's Eve, and for a while after that, I was on a protein diet; they really came through! Add a little hot sauce, and va va voom! I believe the owner, a gracious and kind man, was recently featured on the local news. I look forward to trying more dishes now that my all protein diet is a wrap.
google avatar

Grace N.

Yelp
The restaurant was pretty run down and a In a deli format. Very authentic southern food, but there wasn't really anything special about it. I guess that's the appeal of it. It probably tastes just like grandma's food. As a newbie, it was a little confusing to know what was going on, but the employee helped me figure it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Was in Savannah for the 1st time looking for a soul food restaurant open on Sunday. Found SOTNS on Yelp. Exactly what I was looking for! Food was tremendous & authentic, portions generous, staff was welcoming. Mac & cheese & greens are must-trys. Didn't have oxtails that day but I would have liked to try them also. There's a cute seat-yourself dining room adjacent to eat in. Wish I lived closer!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hello, the service from the sweet girls working the counter was the best this place had to offer today. As a cook of southern cuisine, I expected some seasonings...not there. A lot of the entrees and sides were dark dried out from sitting out. There was a film over the meat and the yams tasted like canned yams. The red velvet cake was old and separating from the yellowish icing. I feel as though Guy was faking it when he visited this place. It is dim, dirty, very old, and not very good. The Sisters must be dead because I am sure they would not approve. I would not recommend this place when visiting Savannah, 2 stars for the 2 sweet young ladies behind the counter.
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
Smothered chicken, 8 Collards, 8 Roll, 9 Yams, 6 Only the yams would I skip next time. A bit too much warm spice, like nutmeg, allspice, those, which I personally do not care for, especially if overdone.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Food was great but the description of the Sisters Hot Legs was incorrect. Menu says it comes with Cajun fries and celery but it's just three drum sticks for $11. My only request is that they update the menu if that's not what you get cuz we were hungry!
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Perfect. Best restaurant for a working persons hot plate ((meat& 3sides) of soul food in Savannah & that's really saying something. A little off the main "drag" but conveniently near Forest Lawn & BONAVENTURE CEMETERY, if you are visiting or touring . Not fancy or posh (or pricey) , just low country cookin' at its best ! A meat and 3sides is the "deal" and let me tell you it's hard to choose , because it all is delicious perfection. Their fried chicken is so superior to most , it almost seems like a "new invention " ? Their smother shrimp is so amazing. They also have seldom seen offerings like oxtail , Turkey wings & salmon patties. All the sides ? I mean just Staaaahp? Don't miss the Mac and cheese as it's so proper but dang ..., choosing collards or butter beans or black-eyed peas or smothered okra or ???? Hard choices , my friends? One of the friendly people working here might offer you a little "sample" if you are waving between choice. Everyone working here seems to take genuine pride in welcoming a diverse crowd of guest to eat their delicious offerings.
google avatar

Debbie M.

Yelp
Food was amazing, fried chicken, cabbage, liver n onions, and the owner was very nice! You go up to the counter to pick your meat n three!! This place was visited by Guy of Triple D, but has gone downhill I think. Don't mind old furniture n old building but It really needs a good cleaning, I realize there is probably no extra money for sprucing up. But it would really help with business, cause the food would really stand out then!!
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
Great homemade food , great selection of meats and vegetables, I definitely will be back
google avatar

Maui W.

Yelp
On our way to Savannah, we went out of our way to drive here but sadly left a little disappointed: The good: The smothered pork chops was delicious. So was all the sides. The kids loved the fried chicken. The bad: The shrimp and grits were not good. The shrimp was very over cooked. They overcharged us for the fried chicken lunch special. They charged us the dinner price. When we brought it to their attention, they refunded it but not the right amount. We were too frustrated by then so we left without saying anything.

Ashley A.

Yelp
Delicious! Lots of choices, with great portion sizes. The staff was nice and attentive, checked on guests in the dining room and even gave us tips on how to make the dish at home! If you want some good soul food, this is where you need to go. None of the sides had meat in them, (for example - the greens) and I appreciated that because I don't eat pork. Even without the meat, it was flavorful!

clinton f.

Yelp
If you come here expect sloooowwwww bad service. Basic unseasoned food. And goodwill setup for seating. I literally have been on the toilet for days after having this food. It was over priced and half the stuff advertised was empty when I got there at 4pm. The staff gave rude service unwarranted. I sat with 7 other people with issues that varied from the same to delivery drivers who couldn't even get their orders because they weren't fulfilled or even made and the staff didn't even care to make it. My family ordered chicken and was told it would be brought to them but 30 minutes later and it never came . I grew up on southern cooking and you can certainly find better for your buck. Support a diff business
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
My review is from Deliveries only: Food is GREAT! Fried chicken.. yum. Chocolate cake... yum, all the desserts... yum... banana pudding... mmm.... Cabbage! whoo hoo. seriously, I could go on and on. the food rocks! Mac n cheese is alright. Iced Tea is good. Seriously, no issues with the food. BUT, BIG BIG BUTT! THEY NEVER GET THE ORDER RIGHT. OK, once in a while they get the order right. Id say 9 times out of 10, something is wrong with my order. If you order mashed potato and gravy. you won't get the gravy; for example. Today, I ordered: Fried chicken, yellow rice, corn, green beans, chocolate cake and an extra side of cabbage. They called and said that they're out of corn. ok. no problem. How about Mashed pots instead? Sure they said, and even asked what kind of gravy. What was delivered: Chicken, rice, beans. No potatoes, no gravy, no cake, no cabbage. Save yourself the trouble and just pick it up. Yes it means standing in line and dodging sketchy car traffic.

Yelp
The best fried chicken, yams and collard greens you can ever have! It's amazingly delicious!

Yelp
Wow it's about D&m time. I have been going to soul food restaurants in a few places including Savannah for the past few months. I have not written reviews because I give a place two times. Could have been a bad day. THIS place stepped up on the first visit. I had the fried chicken dinner with a side of ribs. The chicken brought tears to my eyes and brought back memories of fried chicken dynasties. The ribs were hands down good and had a real spicy sauce. I gave them a five because they are the best example of soul food I have come across being that I was practically raised by cooks who mastered soul food cooking. This place is the real deal and a perfect example of American Soul Food. BTW Mac and cheese are magically good.

Lisa B.

Yelp
Excellent food and portions. The customer service was outstanding. Nice indoor seating area. I highly recommend. The soul rolls were outstanding!!!

Gram L.

Yelp
Stopped by for a bite before lunch at Tybee Island- the pancakes weren't actually being offered on their old wall menu, and they didn't have red velvet. But the fried chicken was tasty and sweet potatoes were fragrantly cinnamony, and actually not too heavy. Cute wall paintings as well.
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
Great good! Mac n cheese was one of the best I've had. Fried chicken was juicy and tasty. Collard greens were good. I would definitely recommend!

Candace H.

Yelp
All I can say is WOW! And I don't mean that in a good way. We had a craving for some peach cobbler. We have been to this restaurant before, although several years ago. What happened? The peach cobbler was tasteless and $7 per serving before tax. The portion amount, if you could call it that, was so very small. Needless to say, we will not be back! I can make a better cobbler than theirs.

Nae L.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE! TV IS A LIE! This place was featured on Diners,Drive-ins,&Dives, but it is NOT as seen on T.V.! Either Guy Fieri is being paid to hype a certain number of places up in each state or this place has seriously took a nose dive when it comes to quality of food, service, and cleanliness. We finished our meals because we wanted to support a black business and we literally had not eaten anything since the day before. So, this was our breakfast and lunch. Oh my!.. how disappointing the whole experience was. First, we came in and it was at least 5 minutes before a young lady came out with a very unfriendly demeanor. Next, the selection of food was very unappealing. The buffet containers were mostly less than half filled and it looked like it at been sitting for a while. As I suspected the food was not even hot...it was lukewarm. We all sat down and ate very mediocre food in a very unclean dining room. There were dirty tables, overflowing trash can, and stacks of dirty dishes! We stayed because we knew we would never be back and wanted to just support a black owned business while in town. I feel really disappointed this place is representing black owned businesses in this area. It unfortunately adds to the stereotype that a black owned restaurant lacks quality. Do better Sisters of the New South!
google avatar

Marsha M.

Yelp
Listennn ---- This place is IT! 100% what I am looking for in cuisine, my absolute favorite meal in Savannah, and an experience that made my life better. I'm not joking, you need to try this place out. When you step in, the women who work here are living their lives and are not gonna put on a fake smile to entertain you. They are friendly, attentive, and helpful, and best of all not fake. They know their food is good, and they're doing their thing. The sides are plentiful and intriguing - I wish I had more time to try everything. I ordered the ox tail stew, with rice, collard greens and okra, along with friend chicken with lima beans, greens, and mac and cheese, along with peach cobbler. Everything I ordered was great. After the touristy nonsense of downtown Savannah I was dying for some real people and real food. Thank you Sisters of the New South for all you do!

Sabrina S.

Yelp
My first visit was great, second was acceptable, the third visit might be my last. I don't know if they overcharged or it's just the same food at twice the price after 3:00 pm. Rib dinner was $18, which was th three vegetables (same for all dinners) and three ribs. The food is good but inconsistent and the prices seem even more inconsistent.
google avatar

Gregg N.

Yelp
That was delicious! Grabbed a meat and three (turkey wings, red rice, lima beans, and mac & cheese) When I walked into the place, the menu was painted on the wall and the food was prepared cafeteria style. They serve breakfast too, but we went for a late lunch. Everything was like perfect. The wings were 'fall off the bones'. She poured a lil turkey gravy on the red rice... aww man! Excellent. The Lima beans were like a throwback. I haven't had any in so long! The Mac and cheese had a great mix of pasta and cheese. I would order exactly this again!
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Cabbage was great. But that was it. Chicken was ok. Mashed potatoes are instant, green beans taste strange, like lemon cleaning products, Mac and cheese was old, fried tilapia was very fishy....and came with no tartar sauce. Not impressed.
google avatar

Bridget N.

Yelp
All the sides tasted like they went from a van to the warmer to our plates. The menu shows a lot of meat options that they did not offer, and the chicken tasted like it came from across the street (kfc). The service also lacked basically everything, made us feel more like an inconvenience than anything.

Sherwood S.

Yelp
Great food and service. Came for lunch and had hamburger steak with greens yams and Mac and cheese
google avatar

Christine G.

Yelp
First time visiting from out of state and the taste of the food did not disappoint. Upon entering the place, I was taken aback a little because I feel like it could be cleaner in there. It looked dingy, between the dust and grimey residue along floorboards and in the corners, I was hesitant to order at first. But I figured I'd pray over my food and be ok. I ordered baked Turkey wings and 3 sides, however there were only wing tips left for a, so I added some fried wings to it. The turkey wings were the best I ever had, hands down. The meat was super flavorful, so tender, I literally was able to suck it off the bone. The fried wings were crispy, seasoned perfectly. The collard greens and sweet potatoes were delicious, however the Mac-n-cheese were a tad bit dry and could've used slightly more salt in my opinion. I was raving about the turkey wings and expressed my disappointment of not having more, so they gave me more wingtips and no extra cost and I inhaled them, literally! I would definitely go back when in the area again.

Matthew L.

Yelp
Found this in TikTok. 10 min or so southeast of Savannah. Food was amazing. Service was awesome. It felt like eating a freshly homecooked meal and it was a great experience. 10/10. I've never tried Oxtail, had that and 3 sides. Yams, Mac, and collard greens. 10/10!!! Definitely recommend if you're visiting Savannah.

Eric ..

Yelp
This place has Really good fried chicken and really good soul rolls also the owner(s) are really nice

Jason C.

Yelp
I did my research before visiting and the plan was to get the fried chicken and pork chop meal. However, didn't turn out that way. I inquired what was the hot selling items and was told everything but the liver lol... then slowly the lady went through the list, oxtail, turkey wings, chicken..... I decided to go with the oxtail and the fried chicken. The ordering system is that, you pick your three sides first and then your main. For the sides, I got the following: - Collard Greens - Green beans - Cabbage - Red Rice - Yellow rice I'll say it now, their green beans were the bomb!! The best I ever had!! I would definitely come back just for the green beans. Red rice was ok, I only tasted the tomato sauce flavor, under seasoned. The cabbage was good, collard greens were bit salty and mac-n-cheese was decent. The yellow rice was decent as well. The oxtail was delicious, the gravy was a killer... the smaller oxtails - the meat just came off, however the large oxtails, you need to fight for the meat. The fried chicken was awesome as well, perfectly fried... funny how this place is located right across KFC!! Few side notes, they give you a lot of rice, I feel like it's a waste, they should cut that in half. The corn bread was okay, sorry but I had better corn bread then their offering. As I ate, I did notice that the food became more saltier... Already missing those fried chicken and the green beans!!
