Smokey Chance BBQ - Review - Culver City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Where can you find a 300-gallon smoker? At Lowe’s, perhaps, but now also at Culver City’s Citizen Public Market. Smokey Chance, the food hall’s new barbecue stall, smokes prime brisket for 14 hours then slices it to order on the counter. You can order half or quarter-pound portions of smoked meat a la carte, or as a platter with beans, cole slaw, and pickles. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Cathy Park

Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Smokey Chance BBQ is firing up its 300-gallon smoker on Saturdays and Sundays at Citizen’s Public Market starting at noon. The specialty is Texas beef brisket from chef-co-owner Jeff Chen that’s smoked for 14 hours until unbeatably tender. Sides prepared by Derrell Smith, co-owner and ex-NFL player, include a savory tallow cornbread, potato salad, and smoked pinto beans topped with white rice. The jerk-spiced gochujang barbecue sauce makes for a tangy accompaniment." - Cathy Chaplin

I was greeted with a wonderful BBQ smell when I came in the Citizen Market. To my surprise the smell was coming from a brisket restaurant. From how everything looked I was excited to try the Brisket Cheesesteak. And they cut the meat right in front of you. All that aside unfortunately this has to be one of the worst cheese steaks I've ever had in my life. The brisket had absolutely no flavor and was covered in BBQ sauce. The meat was tender but was like no seasoning was put on it at all. Sandwich was dry, and hard to eat despite having the sauce. I could barely taste any cheese. I was expecting something completely different. Staff was great and friendly and even brought food to me while I waited. I just couldn't eat that sandwich and not be honest.

This food was so good! I had the brisket cheese steak and the cornbread with the Calabrian honey butter. I love BBQ. I came here with high expectations and they did not disappoint. The meat was so soft is just melted in my mouth. And the sauce and cheese combo packed such a huge flavor bomb. But what really took it over the edge was the addition of the chimichurri sauce. I often forget about the side sauces. Unfortunately, I did not remember until I was almost done with my sandwich. I wish I would have remembered from the start! The staff is so friendly and they created a great vibe with the Gospel music on Sunday. Not only will I be back but I'm making sure I bring people with me!

The brisket was so incredibly tender. I’m not usually a sauce girl but I really like the sauce. Nachos were super tasty as well! Can’t go wrong with jalapeños, cheese, and red onions. :) The shop is located in the Citizen Public Market (super cute!) where we were able to easily find street parking.

I tried Smokey Chance BBQ at the Crow comedy show on June 4th. The BBQ was absolutely delicious—a real treat! The atmosphere was fantastic, with a friendly host and a beautiful venue. The comedians were great! 👏👏 Thank you for such a wonderful evening.

Spent most of my life eating southern barbecue and I've been missing it since I moved out to LA. This place makes me feel at home with a refreshing twist. Everything I tried here was amazing. Cornbread was top tier and the brisket was just perfect. Let me know once I can get some hush puppies and I will be here every day.

Google
High quality meat, great light touch smoking, not super rich, but tender and delicious. The potato salad is maybe the best I’ve ever had, LA beats the Midwest in the category of potato salad? Unlikely, but yes.

Google
Best brisket I've found in LA (I'm from the south) and the employees are so kind, you can tell they put their heart and soul into this concept. Give it a try!

Pulled pork, brisket, potato salad are fire! Love their sauces too!

Yelp
I had the 1/4 lb brisket and it was really tender. I enjoyed it and the sliver of fat was great. It paired well with the bbq sauce. If I were to come back, I'd get more of the brisket. Fills a good niche in citizen public market. The staff were nice and the wait time was very quick (less than 2 minutes).

Yelp
tldr: Solid brisket, great accompaniments. Public Citizen Market is always a treat to visit. I can't wait to come back to try the rest of the menu. -- Food The menu here is pretty small - brisket only and you can get a combo plate, loaded nachos, or a sandwich. DineLA special - basically same as Brisket plate but it comes with a bit less meat and with a biscuit :) Potato salad - 4/5 Solid mash, lots of flavor. A bit too much mustard for me though. Brisket - 4/5 All the qualities of a great brisket: fork tender, well rendered, good bark. Lots of great things to say about it. If you like brisket, come here, you'll like this for sure. Pickles - 4/5 More Japanese style pickled cucumber than traditional American dill pickles (which I strongly dislike). They were really tasty and not at all vinegary. As much as I did enjoy them, I am not sure how well it goes with the more traditional American BBQ. Eating it with a chicken rice bowl though, YUM. Chimichurri - 4/5 They recommended the chimichurri as a side for the brisket and it's a great chimichurri. But similar to my note about the pickles, as great as the sauce is by itself, I am not sure I would pair it again with the rest of the meal. Meanwhile, if it was served with some Argentinian asado... I'd probably be drinking this stuff by the gallon. Rice and Beans - 4.5/5 My favorite side (the biscuit is a very close second). If I could buy a 1-2 pounds of it, I would stock it up in my fridge and eat all week long. So much flavor, perfectly cooked. The texture wasn't soft or mushy and I liked the bite. Biscuit - 4.5/5 This place is next door to Go Go Bird and walking distance from Honey's Kettle which have absolutely top-tier biscuits yet this place keeps up. I honestly can't pick a favorite and it's weird to say but if you like biscuits, Culver City is the hands-down best place to get them anywhere in SoCal (RIP All Day Baby in Silver Lake which was biscuit in contention outside of Culver City). -- Service & Experience Friday February 7th at 4PM. Came solo for a quick bite and there was no line so they assembled my food pretty quickly and I was ready to dig in. They were super friendly and we had a nice chit chat while they were preparing the food. -- Ambiance & Parking It's in a food hall with no dedicated seating but you can sit inside, you can sit outside, you can sit on the roof. There's a lot of options here. As for parking, there are many public structures close by. Some have the first hour free then it's like a $1-$2 per hour thereafter with a $12 max. -- Detailed Thought This place was awesome and I really really want to go back soon to try the nachos and sandwich!!

Yelp
Stumbled on this place in citizen market yesterday and they were giving samples of their brisket. One taste and my friend and I were sold. We ordered the loaded brisket nachos, brisket cheesesteak, smoked beans, and cornbread which came to about $60 including tip. The servings were generous and we both agreed the loaded nachos were amazing and a clear winner. Cheesesteak was also good but a bit too heavy for me personally to eat a whole one myself. The smoked beans were actually beans and rice and I didn't find them to have much flavor and would have preferred if it was just beans. They cornbread was solid and they add melted butter on the too which is perfection. Overall will definitely be coming here again and a bbq spot is just what downtown Culver needed for some variety. Important to note they are currently only open Fri-Sun so catch them on the weekends.

Yelp
For a small food hall, this place really out did itself! I'm always skeptical of bbq places since Texas because I haven't found anything close to it until I tried Smokey Chance! They have their smoker in the back and from smoker to cutting table, chef cuts it up and serve - it doesn't get better than that! Brisket was soft, juicy, and you can even taste the smokiness in it. We dipped the meat in their bbq sauce and that was delicious too. It didn't overpower the brisket. I guess that's why they named it like so - "Smokey with a chance of bbq" omg genius! Pickled onions and cucumbers were such a nice touch to the palate that I didn't know it would be such a great combo with bbq! We bought drinks and other sides from other stalls but this one was our main entree!

Yelp
Had the pleasure of meeting Jeff the pit master and owner. Super cool guy! Had no idea this place had been here for 3 months. My cowers and I almost ordered the entire menu (next time we'll get the nachos!), and everything was delicious! The fat on the brisket had been rendered properly and it was basically a soft pillow of flavor. The seasoning was not too pepper heavy, yet the brisket was the proper "meteor black" like rock color (see attracted photo). We all agreed that we will for sure be back to have more delicious food and support a local up and coming pit master! Thanks so much Jeff! It was so sweet meeting you my guy!

Yelp
All I can say is...WOW!!! This place did not disappoint, it was so good! We got their specialty, the Brisket Platter, which came with 1/2 lb of their 14-hour smoked brisket, smokey beans (topped with a generous scoop of rice), coleslaw, pickles and pickled red onions. The brisket was amazing, soooo smokey, tender and juicy!!! The meat was brought out from the large smoker in the back when we ordered, and it was served steaming hot. Of the sides, the beans were my favorite because they were also smokey. All of the flavors, including the sides, complemented each other perfectly and I could tell the ingredients were high quality. They have a house BBQ sauce and a house green Chimichurri sauce too. Both sauces were very tasty, but I liked the house BBQ sauce more. They also recommended the Strawberry Vanilla Olipop drink and I loved that as well! Portions were great and definitely worth the price for Texas BBQ. I totally recommend this place and can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Heard about this place via instagram and decided to head over. My oh my what a great choice for sunday brunch! Ordered the sandwich and the brisket (once I was given a sample the decision was a no brainer). The brisket was smoked to perfection for 14 hours. Str8 up just melted in my mouth. The sides were delicious as well. Chomped down on the sandwich and killed it within minutes. Ive never had such a perfectly balanced meal when it comes to american smoked meats but this guy Jeff who tends to the smoker know what the hell he is doing! Perfect balance of sweetness to saltiness to sourness and home for the win with the umaminess! And as a bonus kicker spiciness which i find a must! Great group of guys working as a team! Definately will be back!

Yelp
This is a great new spot, the bbq was delicious. I am a fan of brisket and I like how you can request the fatty or leaner portions. For me, I like the fatty meats. The meat is moist and flavorful. This is one of the few places in LA where the brisket is actually good. I would just advise to go there as early as possible in case they sell out. The price was reasonable considering the quality and texture of the meat, it was not dry and chewy like other places.

Yelp
A little bit of Texas in LA. Prime location inside Citizen Public Market in Culver City, which allows you to explore the town a bit, hit up a bar or Erewhon afterwards or simply sit outside to enjoy a nice sunny day. Service was 5 stars, these guys are nice and efficient. They kindly chatted with my friend while she was waiting for me. We couldn't help but take the brisket platters home and they did not disappoint. The brisket was tender, thinly sliced, and the sides, particularly the cucumbers and beans with rice were delicious. I normally don't eat beans but I loved this portion so much I couldn't stop eating and when I ran out, that only suggested one thing: I would come back for more. The sauces are delicious (the chimichurri fairs on the lighter side CA style, not greasy Texan style) and pair well with the brisket, but the special sauce is their signature and the best.

Yelp
The best smoked brisket in town hands down !!! I finally found the tastiest most tender brisket . So happy

Yelp
Smokey Chance BBQ is hands down the best smoked Texas bbq in town! The meat was fall off the bone tender, each bite was delicious and juicy, the aroma of white oak wood infused meat filled the plate, and it was definitely a treat to indulge in. Not to mention the side dishes were to die for, the coleslaw was tangy and crunchy and the Smokey beans and rice was satisfying and scrumptious. The brisket platter was only $26 which I find such a great value for the amount of protein given. The service was spectacular, I received my platter in just a few mins of ordering and the team was so nice and friendly talking about their passion for smoked bbq meats. They even told me that they do catering services as I would love to book them for our next office party. You can try free samples as well before purchase. I will definitely be coming back to Smokey Chance BBQ, they are beyond a 5 out of 5!!

Yelp
A Delicious Discovery! I was out and about, just looking for something quick to eat, and stumbled upon this Smokey Chance joint--what a find! The brisket was unbelievably tender, packed with smoky flavor and that sauce.... Money. I didn't expect to be blown away, but every bite was a flavor bomb. It came with a few small complimentary sides that had just the right tang to balance it all out. The friendly staff and relaxed vibe made it even better. I'm so glad I took a chance on this place-- it'll be top of my list when I'm back in the area. Thanks fellas.

Yelp
I found this hidden gem within The Citizen food hall of Culver City. The brisket was very juicy and tender, with a bold savory flavor. And not to forget to mention, the side serving of the tallow cornbread really complimented and sealed both savory & sweet flavors together! Jeff (Chef, Brisket smoker), Darrel and Darren were all very friendly and down to earth. I appreciated that Jeff took the time to share that it's always been his passion to cook and share his creations with friends and family. And, now he's able to share with the rest of the community at what he does best - smoke brisket! It's nice to see a homegrown business, who really caters to their customers, takeoff the way Smokey Chance has! Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Finally found a place with quality brisket! Ordered the brisket platter and it did not disappoint. The brisket was extremely tender and juicy with just the right amount of smokey flavor. The juiciness is what really makes this place stand out from others! The cornbread is also so unique as they use smoked beef tallow to make it. It has a super satisfying aftertaste with a slight kick at the end. We also got treated to a chocolate chip cookie that was just off the charts. They also use smoked beef tallow for the cookie and it leaves this wonderful coating in your mouth after just left me wanting more. Service is also great and the food came out super fast. This is my new go to for brisket!

Yelp
Was excited to try this place after trying the free sample. The sample was not bad. Let's just say the sample was better than my meal. The meat was too dry and not flavorful. Not to mention overpriced. Pros of this place is the staff. They were nice.

Yelp
it was so awesome meeting Jeff, Darrell, and Darren and trying their smoked brisket. I did not expect such great texas style brisket at such a small spot. If you're in the neighborhood trust me and don't miss out on this one

Grace T.

Yelp
Smokey Chance BBQ is delicious. The brisket is very tender and all the sides go well with the barbecue. It was so good, I asked them to cater an office lunch and a potluck during the holiday season. It was a huge hit.

Yelp
Very limited menu and their specialty is brisket which was very good. The only problem I had was the side dishes. Very skimpy, like just a small spoonful of potato salad. For $28.00 I think they could give you a little bit more.
google avatar

Hobart L.

Yelp
Great briskets love the taste would definitely come back here!! Everyone there are super friendly. Pricing is good. Place is very clean too. Hope to be back here again soon.

Yelp
Great bbq spot that specializes in smoked brisket. That's the only cut of meat they offer but the meat has a perfect balance of meat to fat ratio. They do a good job with their sides as well. I had the beans and rice. I'm not a big fan of beans, but the beans were surprisingly addicting. There were chunks of smoked brisket in the beans, and it was well balanced when eating it with the rice. I also enjoyed their potato salad and pickled veggies. Smokey Chance BBQ is located in the Citizen Public Market in downtown Culver City. They are currently opened on Saturdays and Sundays only from 12pm-8pm, but I heard they will add more days in the near future.

Yelp
I knew this place was legit when the sweet smell of smoked BBQ permeates the Culver City air! Got the brisket platter and it was divine! It came with coleslaw and a scoop of white rice with beans. The meat was tender and juicy. It kinda reminded me of the briskets you get in Austin, Texas. Can't to return to Smokey Chance get my BBQ fix.

Yelp
Brisket was tender and flavorful. Didn't get a chance to try the nachos but will definitely make another trip to try it.

Yelp
Amazing bbq! Brisket was cooked to perfection and the meat was super tender. Potato salad, rice and beans sides were delicious. This hidden gem is a must try!

Matthew R.

Yelp
Brisket from heaven. Originally wasn't planning on going to the market for barbecue but had a sample of their meat and was blown away. The owner puts a lot of sweat into his product - and it definitely shows. They have sauce available, but honestly the flavor of the meat without it is incredible. The store is inside of the Citizen Public Market - so there is a lot of foot traffic and fun while enjoying a great meal. They also do takeout if you aren't looking to dine out.

Eric P.

Yelp
What a great addition to the Citizen Public Market! Last weekend I was craving some BBQ while in downtown Culver City and stumbled across this joint. Let's just say Smokey Chance did not disappoint. They should call it Smokey Promise! I got their brisket platter, grabbed a beer from a separate vendor, and had a feast on their market patio. The flavor sensation brought me back to a memorable Austin trip. Hats off to this barbecue joint! BBQ done right. Also a note, the public market is dog friendly. I was able to walk my lab-pit right in. Smokey Chance is located in the back of the market. Woof!

Melissa C.

Yelp
The meat here is delicious--so tender and packed with flavor! Cooked to perfection. The service was friendly and efficient. Definitely a must-try spot if you're craving something amazing!!

Janine B.

Yelp
Had the platter. Loved the smoked brisket. Super tender. Sides were really good. Is a legit BBQ spot. I think they could expand their menu.

Killer K.

Yelp
The food was decent but the 1 star is for them skimping me on the brisket platter. There's no way my portion was 1/2 pound, for that they've lost a customer and I'll never recommend this place. $28 for few skimpy portions that were mostly fat.
