Where to Eat and Drink on Convoy Street

"The traditional restaurant is decked out in basic décor but the service staff is there to warmly guide newcomers around the menu, which holds specialties like boiled beef or fish filet in hot sauce, mapo tofu, and shrimp with green chili and hot sauce." - Helen I. Hwang

The Best Way to Spend a Weekend in San Diego

"Pleasingly piquant Sichuan fare is ordered up by a dining room of mostly regulars who pack in for mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, and a whole steamed fish with dried chiles. Out of the way from downtown but worth a visit if you have a car." - Sophie Friedman

Convoy’s stalwart for bold Sichuan cooking—mapo tofu, cumin lamb, and chili-bathed fish—recommended by Eater and praised by San Diego Magazine. No frills, big flavors, and central to the area’s dining identity.

A flavorful, satisfying Sichuan experience with bold dishes, stellar portions, and great value. Slight inconsistencies in spice and occasional wait times prevent full five-star status—but if you’re craving spicy, authentic Chinese fare, Spicy City delivers reliably. You put your name on pad at door and wait outside. Food comes out super fast so you may want to stagger order. Or just order drinks at take time to review the menu. Note the in house menu has pictures of all the dishes. They also serve beer and wine.

A Must-Try Sichuan Gem in San Diego Wow, spicy city absolutely lived up to the hype! This long-standing Sichuan spot in San Diego was packed tonight – always a good sign – and the energy was fantastic. The menu is a dream for spice lovers and adventurous eaters. We were thrilled to find Braised Pork Knuckle (蹄膀, Tí Pǎng) on offer! It was incredible: fall-off-the-bone tender, rich, savory, and coated in that deeply flavorful, slightly sticky sauce. A real standout and a must-order if you see it. The flavors across our other dishes were bold, authentic, and packed that classic Sichuan punch . Service was efficient and friendly, especially considering how busy they were. If you're craving real-deal Sichuan in San Diego and don't mind a lively atmosphere (or potentially a short wait), Guo Qiao Yuan is definitely worth it. That Pork Knuckle alone is worth the trip! Highly recommended for a satisfying, flavorful feast.

Google
Fast service and authentic food, this place has all the classic Chinese dishes you’d expect. There’s usually a short wait on weekends, but it’s worth it. Staff is friendly and they’even pack up your leftovers for you. Only downside is the food can be pretty oily and tastes like it has a good amount of MSG. Still super flavorful, just something to keep in mind!

Google
A friend of mine and I always go here. It is our go-to spot for hot and sour soup as well as dumplings. The portions are very generous, and an entree can feed two people easily. The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly! You definitely should give Spicy City a try! Only issue is the parking can be a challenge at busier times, but that isn't the fault of the restaurant.

Google
food came out fast! a little too fast. boiled fish still my favorite. intestines were cleaned well. the other dishes, especially the tea smoked duck & cold cuts, were honestly mid.

I came here several times, and I’m always satisfied. Compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area, I like this place the best considering the taste and price

Google
This place has a big menu, they have a lot of different types of cuisines in China. We had a Stir Fry Shredded Pork, Stir Fry All Veggies and a Fish Head with Hot Pepper, they are all so delicious. They are better than I expected since this restaurant’s review is not that great. But from a real Chinese perspective, I think their food is good and authentic, I definitely recommend!

Google
Such a fun spot! Every dish is unique and made fresh to order. I had the Local Style Beef and the Hot and Sour Soup, both were absolutely delicious. 🔥 The service was excellent. In an area full of options, this place really stands out for its quality and originality.

Yelp
Spicy and delicious, with a very authentic taste that soothes my Chinese stomach. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Still extremely fast service. The food is always on your table in no time after placing your order. The dining area is fine. Not dirty.

Yelp
The service is only okay here, the food is good but there is always a communication problem when we come here. The ambiance is loud and it can be hard to have a conversation with friends we are sitting with. We ordered a variety of spicy items from veggies, dan dan noodles, honey walnut shrimp, dumplings, spicy lamb, hot and sour and fish soup. Everything was so good, some dishes were more spicyer than the other and had a lot of chopped up peppers. We did have an issue with using a Yelp coupon, they would not accept it and said they haven't used it in years. Not sure why the coupon shows up when we check in.

Yelp
Attentive and friendly service, the dishes we ordered are very tasty, not overly salty or greasy, and big portions! Inside restaurant is clean. There are parking spaces outside. We will come back to try more dishes!

Yelp
Spicy City is one of those restaurants where you know you're getting an authentic Sichuan experience the moment you walk in. The family style round tables, simplistic menus, and wait times on a Saturday evening say it all: get ready for some real spice. Props to the servers for understanding my semi-broken Mandarin and preparing a table of 9 with only a 30-minute heads up. I usually recommend the spicy boiled fish and mapo tofu at any restaurant serving Sichuan cuisine. However, Spicy City's dan dan noodles especially stood out to me! They nailed the mushy consistency and had a ton of flavor. For the spice-intolerable fellows, the twice cooked pork offers a savory taste with only a mild hint of numbing spice (although to be honest, if they can't stand spice, this is the wrong restaurant). If you want to play things safe, the fried chicken cubes are a crowd pleaser. I imagine I'll want to try new restaurants the next I'm in San Diego, but I might have to give this one a revisit.

Yelp
Spicy City on Convoy has to have one of the best names for a restaurant. It's blunt and straight to the point. I'll start off by saying that I can't really handle spicy foods. It's no bueno for me. I start sweating and before you know it I have the appearance of someone who just ran a marathon in high humidity. How I ended up at Spicy City was with the help of friends who convinced me that not all their dishes are spicy. So with that said, I rolled the dice and met up with my friends for lunch. This is my first time trying Sichuan cuisine as most of the dishes are well you know spicy. It is said that Sichuan food was developed to help people cope with the humid climate of southwest China. According to Chinese medicine, excessive dampness can negatively affect the body, but eating warming foods like chilies can help eliminate that moisture. The more you know! I left the ordering to my trusted foodie friends who assured me that they would order dishes that were not too spicy. And sure enough 5 of the 6 dishes were not spicy. Let me say that the food came out of the kitchen so fast. Each dish was amazing, packed full of flavor. You definitely need an order of rice to tame the mind blowing flavors. I loved every dish for its Sichaun flavoring. The table had ordered some specials from pork elbow, to pork belly which they only serve on the weekend. Completely satisfied with every dish and would certainly re order it again. Located in the old China Max center, parking is somewhat available but there is also street parking. The restaurant is small and can get packed but with the speed of the kitchen, wait times are not long at all.

Yelp
Another visit at spicy city with friends. This restaurant never disappoint us. Food taste is always consistent and flavorful. Their special beans are so good and I really like their homestead tofu and eggplant with spicy garlic sauce. Onion pancakes are good too, super soft and delicious, their service is pretty good too. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, this is the place to go, located at convoy street heaven for food lovers...

Yelp
The restaurant is a bit small, but it is where I like spicy food - when I am able to eat it. Due to recent food restrictions, can't do spicy food, but definitely reminscing about the spicy food here! They have prepped side dishes nearby the register, which you can get a bit cheaper if you pay in cash. They have jerky that they prep, which sells out quite fast, so you would need to go in the morning to try to get it. Other popular items include their spicy cured meat and Pork Ears. My favorites to get here are the Szechuan Style Spicy Fish, Spicy Fried Lamb with Cumin, and Deep Fried Chicken Cubes with Hot Pepper. Their dishes have a nice kick, and sometimes you just want that spicy fried indulgence with a bit of heartburn/mouth-searing bliss. I will honestly admit I need to eat my favorites with rice to survive. This place is not for those seeking gluten free/less oily options. Service is okay. Parking is a tad harder as the parking lot is small, unless you come during their off rush hours or look for street parking on the side. Understandably LA/Monterey Park/San Gabriel/New York/San Francisco have a plethora of more options in Asian food and probably more cheaper. However I would say that Spicy City is alright in San Diego, as we don't have the same plethora of options like other places.

Yelp
This is my all time favorite place for Chinese food. We visit at least once or twice a month. We had Szechuan food when we visited ChengDu. I would say this place is close to what i had in China. We've been ordering take out almost once every two weeks. Tonight was the first time we dined in since the pandemic. All dishes are delicious. The portions are big and very reasonably priced. We ordered: Spicy Chicken Dry Pot Chef's Special Green Bean Salt and Pepper Pork Seafood with Bean Curd Shred Pork with brown sauce and buns Special Sweet Rice Ball Soup I also like their stir fried rice cake with preserved vegetables and pan fried pork buns. I'm sure we'll be back very soon.

Yelp
Spicy City is one of my family's favorite restaurants. The food tastes home cooked which is quite nostalgic. Food is served family style so order a couple of dishes to share. Deciding what to order can be overwhelming as there are many options. Thankfully, there are pictures on the menu and in the restaurant itself. There are also cold dishes available at the front of the restaurant so be sure to wander up and check it out. My favorite dishes are the deep fried chicken cubes with hot pepper and dried fry string beans. Be aware that the chicken dish has peppers that will make your mouth go a bit numb and tingling. FYI, the restaurant is located in a very busy center with many restaurants so the parking lot is always packed. There's also street parking available.

Yelp
Was recommended this place by a co worker and I've been it before when coming to Bonchon. We ordered online so we didn't have to wait and it was ready right when we arrived! The parking lot is pretty small and some of the spots are really narrow and hard to get into. I'd prepare to park on the street during peak times. The mapo bean curd aka tofu was very good. It was my girlfriend's first time and she loved it. She also loved how much garlic was on the green beans! The juicy dumplings were delicious and the filling sauce was perfect and exactly what I needed for dipping. I can't remember the beef dish I ordered but it was nothing special. Not much seasoning just cooked beef with a little bit of a kick and no distinctive sauce or seasoning. We want to come back and try it again to find something else on the meat menu that'll be a lot better

Yelp
Spicy City is one of my regular takeout spots whenever I visit San Diego (also a regular spot for my friends who live there). The quality and quantity is just so good for the price. Despite the name, there are plenty of non-spicy options for our spice averse friends. We especially love the green beans, spicy eggplant, walnut shrimp an salt pepper fish. Staff always do a great job with our orders and are efficient on the phone. And when we have dined in on weeknights, we've been seated quickly. Always a highlight of the week getting Spicy City!
google avatar

Julz A.

Yelp
Location is next to a lot of other restaurants so parking is a little tough during peak hours of lunch time. We got seated right away and the staff were very attentive. So attentive that they let asked us what we wanted even though we had just sat down and had just started looking at the long pages of menu. The place does look clean and there were people eating which gave me hope and excitement. The serving was big which I was excited about. Everything we ordered was so so.. Fried Yunan Rice noodles lacked seasonings; it tasted like noodles that were boiled (it's not fried, like the title) and and was forgotten and served as is with bits of pork. so we decided to use the sauce from the Wonton Chili oil that we ordered and it helped with the taste. When we were putting away the left over, I mentioned that I will need the chili sauce to add to the noodles so it will taste like something and finally told her this dish tasted like it had been neglected from being seasoned. She took the dish back to be seasoned and this time, it didn't look so pale, and looked more stir fried , AND it tasted better but we packed it away. I'll put more details with the picture . The wonton chili oil was 6/10... Dumpling Inn is much better. All in all, I'll probably stick to the one next door , eastern Dynasty (even though they have smaller servings) if I'm in this area. nice staff though! Thank you!

Yelp
I was planning take my son to Lanzhou Noodlelicious but we hit during the time they are closed between lunch and dinner, so had to figure out a Plan B. Spotted Spicy City and the rest is history. No problem getting seated, friendly service. Ordered a bunch of different items -- from Dan Dan noodles (spicy!) to the onion pancake to dumplings and much more. All very good to excellent. We'll be back.

Yelp
As someone who grew up eating Chinese food, this place is a decent spot, but I still prefer Noble Chef & Eastern Dynasty (next door). Service was incredible, everyone was super nice and the food came out very quick. - The Snow Bean Leaf (Dou Miao) was the standout of the meal and the MP (market price) was $17.99 - The eggplant dish, while yummy and supposed to oily, this one was over the top oily - The pan fried pork buns were not juicy and actually kind of dry (tasty noodle house wins) - The fried chicken had a over the top taste of msg

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Spicy City for a long time now, and I'm so glad I did. We had the fried cumin lamb and sizzling beef. The presentation of the beef being transferred onto the sizzling plate really gets your appetite going. Food was served quickly, and it was easy to get the attention of servers for things like to-go containers. The price isn't bad for the quantity of food you get, as we had plenty of leftovers-- enough for the two of us to have another meal. The food isn't too salty, seasoned just right to be flavorful. I definitely want to come back and try the Szechuan style spicy fish that everyone raves about.

Yelp
I had heard so many good things over the years that I finally decided to stop by with a friend. They're very busy and the staff are efficient and straight to business. It's a small place with lots of tables so they seemed to be constantly shifting things around to get as many parties in as possible. No wait on a Saturday at 6 for a party of 2. The menu is giant but the pictures were appreciated. Despite the name they had plenty of nonspicy things. We got the sizzling fish, beef and broccoli, and the string beans. The beef was tender and had a good flavor. The beans were perfectly cooked and seasoned. When we left they quickly boxed the food and got the check taken care of and that was that. It wasn't the best Szechuan I've had but the prices were very reasonable for the volume. This particular shopping center is frequently awful to park in by about 7PM but it was good at 6.

Yelp
And oldie but a goodie! I first dined at this restaurant when I was in college in the area many moons ago. Since leaving the area after college, I haven't had the opportunity to return much. But on a recent work trip, I was actually visiting another establishment in the same place. I saw that Spicy City was still there and decided I would come back on another day to see if it was just as good as I remembered. I was very happy with my order of shredded potatoes with green pepper, dry sauteed string bean and homestead kidney. The portions were sizeable and the dishes did not feel overpriced. I had plenty to take with me for a meal the next day. Everything I ordered came out quicky and piping hot. The staff was friendly and attentive. It was a packed house at about 7pm on a Wednesday which was great to see. If I'm in the area again, I will definitely want to come back to venture into the cheek numbing options.

Yelp
I will start by saying that the food here isn't as spicy (or numbing) compared to the szechuan food in LA! BUT it was still very flavorful and delicious. We came on a Tuesday night (after Christmas) and it was BUSY! Every restaurant in the plaza had a wait and the parking lot was full. Luckily, there was a lot of street parking available if you're okay to walk a bit. We waited about 30 min or so and were seated at 8pm. They closed at 8:30, so once we sat and ordered, the food came out super fast! It's a pretty small place, but we were able to fit a high chair at our table with 4 adults. The ladies seem very stressed, could come off as rude. But a couple of the other male servers were more friendly. We tried the Mapo Tofu with "regular" spicy and it was barely spicy at all -- an enjoyable amount of spiciness, not much of the numbing feeling. The string beans with garlic were also good, super flavorful and the fried garlic was amazing. The eggplant with spicy garlic sauce was good, but I could probably skip it. The fried salt and pepper fish was super good! Big pieces of fish and super crispy. Overall, a good dinner spot if you're craving Asian food! And it's not too spicy at all, so I think anyone could enjoy it.

No Spicy No Life K.

Yelp
After 7 year we decided to give this place another try and now it is a one star restaurant. So disappointed. A sichuan restaurant that can't even make mapo tofu right...super low quality fish in sour fish...we ordered 6 dishes and nothing was good. Service was fine though. But super dated interior and menu. Btw, I do know what authentic sichuan food should taste like. Just look at my yelp name and you know what I'm talking about.

Yelp
We came here for dinner last night with some friends, and this place is so good!! Our server, Auntie Huay, is the absolute sweetest and recommended us some delicious dishes. This is what we ordered for a party of 7: Hot and sour soup ($10, rated 5/5): My husband said this is the best hot and sour soup he has ever had, and I have to agree. I love the taste of white pepper in this. Sizzling beef ($19, rated 5/5): Tender beef with a delicious sauce on a sizzling hot plate. I feel like everyone would enjoy this. Toasted fish ($33, rated 5/5): This dish is MASSIVE. The catfish tasted super fresh, and we loved how this came with a bunch of goodies like fresh veggies (potatoes, celery, napa cabbage, soy bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms) and tofu!! It's all soo flavorful and good after boiling away in that broth. Auntie recommended this to us; this is a must get dish!!! Beef chow mein ($13, rated 4/5): The texture of the noodles was perfectly chewy. I just wish there was more wok hei. Another classic dish that everyone would enjoy. Dan dan noodle ($10, rated 4/5): The texture of these noodles are also perfectly chewy. The sauce was a bit thick and not a lot of meat (if any at all) but still really good overall. Chef's special green beans ($14, rated 5/5): The green beans were fresh and cooked well. This is one of my favorite dishes in general, and this place did not disappoint! Wonton tossed with chili sauce ($11, rated 4/5): I have really high expectations for wontons tossed with chili sauce. This dish was not as good as the one at Din Tai Fung, but it was still good. Fried chicken cubes with hot pepper ($16, rated 5/5): Chicken was sooo crunchy, and seasoning was spicy and salty. Another must get dish! We all walked out super full and even had leftovers. Prices are fair for the portion size. Coming from OC, I am always skeptical of Chinese food in SD, but this place rivals restaurants back home. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for authentic, spicy Chinese food.

Yelp
Came at 1 PM on a Friday afternoon as a party of 2. It's in a packed plaza with other Asian places but it stands out with its phenomenal portion sizes, vast menu, and fair prices. The interior is a bit small and it looks like The restaurant was busy but fortunately there were some open tables. We ordered two dishes that could easily be shared amongst 3-5 people. Definitely a place to go if you want leftovers. So excited to come again and try their other dishes! Beef Fried Rice 8.5/10 - they didn't skimp out on the meat! Stir-Fried Pork Intestines with Pickled Chili Peppers 8.5/10 was worried it'd be sweet and sour sauce but it wasn't!

Yelp
Came on a rainy Saturday night without making reservations, and managed to secure the last table large enough for 5! The restaurant's interior, on the smaller side, exudes a classic charm reminiscent of family-owned Chinese establishments, sparking a nostalgic feel. Portion sizes were great, and the menu was a bit smaller/less varied than other Sichuan/Chinese restaurants I've been to, but still had a decent amount for diverse tastes at very fair prices. Value is definitely their strong point. While the spice level didn't quite match up to the intensity of Szechuan food in SF/Bay Area, the flavors were still rich and savory. The eggplant with spicy garlic sauce, while good, had a unique twist with a strong vinegar flavor that might not be everyone's preference. However, the cumin beef stole the show with its bold, savory taste. My only wish is for the dishes to pack a bit more heat and intensity of flavors.

Yelp
First visit was excellent! Found this restaurant on yelp and decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. The service was fast and the food was fantastic! I highly recommend the wontons in hot chili oil, those were my favorite. The nice waiter said that the restaurant has been open for 18 years under the same owner 10/10 recommend

Yelp
I love this place, my girl and I come here all the time when we're in SD. She has been a staple customer here for years and she officially has me converted. The first time I stepped in here with her, I was greeted by the friendly staff in Cantonese and at home right away. The service here is TOP NOTCH, especially for an old Chinese restaurant. Try getting the attention of staff at a Chinese restaurant in SGV, good luck with that bruh. Everything I've had on the menu here is ON POINT. From the friend chicken, spicy tofu, spicy dumplings, spicy eggplant, you get my point. They have non spicy traditional Cantonese dishes as well, if you're not hard enough to deal with the pain. I'll always come back here when I'm in SD. The portions are so big, there's enough left overs for the both of us for days! Best Chinese restaurant in San Diego bar none!!!
google avatar

Olivia P.

Yelp
The service and food here is excellent. The folks who work here remember you and that makes for such a warm dining experience. You can't go wrong with any of the food, it's delicious and flavorful. My go to dishes are the cumin lamb, the crispy spicy chicken, their vegetable dishes like green beans or eggplant, and my gosh they have a simple but divine dessert which is like a crispy stick with a chewy mochi like interior which rocks with their jasmine tea. Sometimes I just come for the tea and dessert. I've come back here time and time again and it's such a comforting environment, and I absolutely love the staff. If you love spicy flavorful szechuan food look no further.

Yelp
Shrimp Fried Rice, Spicy Fish, Garlic Pea Leaves Always one of our favorite places!!! Such good food, always excellent. The fried rice was a new order for us, and it was incredibly good!!!

Yelp
I went for lunch with my coworkers here and we ordered the Szechuan Style Spicy Fish, Deep Fried Chicken Cubes with Hot Peppers, and Soup Dumplings. Every single dish was absolutely amazing, but the Szechuan Style Spicy Fish stole the show--it had the perfect balance of bold flavors and heat, truly fantastic. The soup dumplings were soft and flavorful, and the fried chicken cubes, with their crispy texture and spicy kick, were just as impressive. The Szechuan peppercorns added a delightful numbing sensation that elevated the whole meal. The portions were huge, making it well worth the price. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying every dish on the menu. Definitely a spot worth visiting!

Yelp
In my opinion, spicy city is one of the best Chinese restaurants in San Diego. Usually we order the Mapo Tofu, the fried fish, and another dish that we are craving. This can be the eggplant, the panfried buns or the shredded pork. The food always comes out very quickly after we order. One gripe that I have regarding the food is the lack of consistency regarding the spice levels. I personally really enjoy the numbing flavors and sometimes the food is really numbing which I enjoy and other times, the food does not have that much spice. The service is very good. The staff is helpful and welcoming and quick. The restaurant's interior is on the smaller side however there are plenty of seats. It does get busy if there are a lot of people. Parking however is very difficult to find. There are so many restaurants in the plaza however there are not many parking spots so you may have to park a little walk away.

Yelp
First time here and didn't know what to order. Server recommend local flavor beef and it was so yummy! Their chili oil wontons were good too. Great dinner spot

Yelp
Solid Chinese food spot on Convoy that's in one of the easier-to-park plazas thankfully. Food: Family-style dishes so make sure to get a good variety of things to share. Tried the twice cooked pork for my first time and would definitely recommend it. Not the craziest Chinese food spot but a reliable one that genuinely has great variety. Service: Got seated right away for a table for two during dinner time on Sunday. Service was really quick and got our food equally as fast. At the end they packed up our leftovers for us which I always appreciate. Ambiance: Small-medium sized place. Definitely saw groups of 6-8 people so they'll make it work for larger parties despite the limited space and tables. Water: Red cups for water lol. Honestly didn't mind it and they refilled regularly but thought it was funny as I hadn't seen red party cups used at a restaurant ever (I think).

Yelp
Ordered door dash from here. Chow mein, honey walnut shrimp and fried rice. Super excited when it arrived and the portions were great but the food had no seasoning and tasted so bland. Panda Express would have been better after I tried this.
google avatar

Jaylene K.

Yelp
This is my family's favorite place in Convoy for authentic Chinese food with generous portions! Service is always quick and we especially love the cold dish bar. Interior wise, it's not the most aesthetically pleasing place, but honestly that's how you know the food is going to hit. In terms of inflation prices, you really can't beat the prices (and portions) here. There are traditional Chinese dishes here that lean more on the spicy side, and there are also more Americanized Chinese dishes if that's what you prefer. They definitely have a wide variety of customers which just proves how popular they are!

Yelp
I have only been here once. We went with a bunch of spicy food enthusiasts and ordered a while bunch of things so we had quite the variety of foods to try. I really enjoyed most things we ate and can't make a favorite yet. The service was ok, but the dining area was full when we arrived so they were pretty busy. It was really crowded and a bit noisy but worth the experience. The lazy Susan helped all 10 or so of us to get a bite of everything.

Yelp
This is our favorite schezuan restaurant in San Diego. We've been going here for decades. The flavors are on point. They are now Michelin recognized. Our favorites are the cold dish trio appetizers (pork ear, cucumbers, and bamboo), deep fried schezuan fish/shrimp/or intestine (spicy numbing peppers), fish and tofu in soy sauce broth, honey walnut shrimp but almost everything is good. The waitresses here are friendly and helpful but don't expect exceptional service here. It's a "hole in the wall" sit down type place. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Food here is amazing. Don't worry about the service. String beans are a must. My favorite is the local flavor lamb. I also remember loving the boiled fish here although it's been awhile

Yelp
Located on Convoy and Engineer and near the Honda dealership. This restaurant feels almost hidden with the number of businesses. It's in the same center as a construction zone of what was once China Max. Jeong Won KBBQ and Bon Chon are in the same center. Parking here is a hit or miss depending on time of day, but expect difficulty at night. I recall parking a block and a half away one time for this center. I used to get beef noodle soup when I was a kid. Nowadays, I get broccoli beef, dry fried green beans, salt and pepper chicken, and the fried chicken cubes in hot pepper. The green beans are so good that I could meet my vegetable goals everyday with this. I like to switch off between my chicken options to avoid getting overwhelmed by the spice. The interior decor feels like a classic family owned sit down Chinese restaurant, which is nostalgic for me. Service has generally been good whenever I've been here.

Yelp
We love eating spicy Chinese food and we tried several of these this year and out that this becomes one in the list we would like to go again in addition to Shan Xi Magic Kitchen. Wonderful staff and everything were quick., We got quickly seated greeted by a server, we ordered food quickly Cumin Lamb and Green Pepper Spicy Chicken. The food was good and would like to go there again to try more dishes. This place was busy which is one important thing I always consider. The business felt like family owned and run business with way too many items on the menu and some off-the menu specials too.

Yelp
Currently my go to spot for Chinese food at the moment. We typically spend around $70 for two people and have leftovers for a few meals. Broccoli beef: I was surprised by how tender the beef was, not gristly at all. The broccoli pieces were a bit too big/crunchy. I had to cut them smaller with a knife. This dish was pricey at almost $20. Green beans - so good! Large portion too. White rice - standard, extra charge for rice. They will ask how many servings you need. Salted pepper chicken - very good, second best to the spicy version since the chicken is more meaty/plentiful in this dish. Fried chicken cubes with hot pepper - my fav! I wish it came with more chicken though. Parking is a pain and they get very busy very quickly for lunch! I've only gotten to go so far, haven't eaten inside the restaurant.

Yelp
We had heard about Spicy City but were disappointed. Waitress acted as if we immediately knew what we wanted and we had to day "no appetizer" and ask her to come back several timed even though the place was empty. The dishes were straightforward but had some spice in them that we didnt like. We told her about not liking the King Pao but she didnt do anything about it. Dishes were not overly spicy. Waitress was pleasant but it was obvious we left the whole dish.

Yelp
02-10-23 -Fish with Tofu $14.99-- basa fish and tofu were good. Sauce needed a little salt. We added a drizzle of soy sauce. It was just right. -Intestine Dry Pot $16.99-- tasty intestine but a little oily for me. However, my company enjoyed the dish very much. -Pancake $3.99-- crunchy. -Cold Dish Three Mixed $12.07: cured meat--flavorful, pork--crunchy tasty, and peanuts--yummy with slightly coated sugar. -Rice $2 per order Note: If you order just the meat for the Cold Dish Three Mixed, it's $13 (not $12.07). Not much difference just wanted to point it out

Yelp
Although Spicy City at Convoy may seem low-key both externally and internally, the quality of their food is truly remarkable. The staff members were friendly and efficient, ensuring fast service. We ordered the following: - shrimp fried rice - steamed pork buns - spicy assorted seafood The authentic ingredients including the spicy flavors compelled us to consume more than we initially intended. We definitely plan on stopping by again.

Yelp
Having been here before my expectations have already been set pretty high. But this time was unfortunately different. As usual I got the Szechuan pork and asked for extra spicy and an order of the fried spring rolls. The pork arrived within 1-2 minutes. This tells me that there was a vat of it premade in the kitchen. It wasn't extra spicy like I asked and it just wasn't that good. The spring rolls arrived 10-15 minutes later. I hate it when the appetizer arrives AFTER the main dish. I am very disappointed and sad about this as this was my absolute favorite place and dish in all of San Diego. I am unsure if I will go back, but I know everyone has an off day so giving them another try is a possibility.

Yelp
Delicious Chinese food spot! We usually order takeout from here because they're fast, give amazing portions, and the food stays hot for over an hour. Everything we've tried here has punchy flavors and goes great with rice. We love the spicy boiled fish, cumin lamb, and snow pea leaf w garlic dishes the best! Calling on the phone to place the order went smoothly, and they were accommodating for nut allergies. They also called me to let me know the food was ready (I was running late)

Yelp
Came in here during what would probably be considered their slow time. I was recommended this place by several Chinese friends, and took that as a good sign. I definitely recommend coming here if you like Szechuan/Sichuan cuisine and that typical mala/numbing spice. The waitress, who was super nice, also recommend a couple of items that I think might be more to the American palette (honey wall nut shrimp, kung pal chicken, etc.). And I did get one of those dishes (sizzling beef) as well. Overall the food came out super quick and the service was really friendly. I will definitely be back since the flavors here are so unique. I guess maybe don't come if you don't like numbing spice, but you should try it at least once!

Yelp
My favorite Sichuan restaurant ever. The space is a bit small but I enjoy it that way and cozy. The staff are always so nice and helpful. I've been a regular since 2016 and the food has always been consistent. My favorites are the chicken cube with pepper, fried fish, sour beef soup and most of their side lol. The portions are huge that we end up taking it to-go.
