Google
Historical steak house in Indianapolis that lives up to its name. They pride themselves in the history. The servers are properly addressed as stewards and those that have tenure are actually listed on the menu. The shrimp cocktail is definitely a sinus opener since they use a LOT of fresh horseradish. Not for the faint of heart. The dry aged steaks were delicious and cooked to perfection. Portions were large and worth the price. Our server, Laura seemed too practiced and not genuine (her name was on the menu as a 5 year tenure). Merely using terms of endearment like 'lovey' or 'honey' seems a bit demeaning when you aren't looking someone in the eye or smiling much. She mentioned an assistant Jen, that i never saw during the meal. The food and cocktails made up for it ,though. Will be trying other steak houses next time I'm in the area to compare. Valet $15. Came in at reservation time and did not have a wait.

Wow… dinner at St. Elmo Steak House was an unforgettable experience! We were warmly welcomed by the hostesses and quickly taken to our table. We dined in the Card Room, where the ambiance was rich with charm. Our server, Richard, introduced himself with genuine enthusiasm and provided impeccable service throughout our experience. The World Famous Shrimp Cocktail lived up to its name—bursting with flavor and bracingly spicy, it packed a punch that brought me tears. I enjoyed the 28 oz. Porterhouse Steak with mashed potatoes, while my guest indulged in the 14 oz. Ribeye paired with a baked potato. Both steaks were cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and filled with great flavors. St. Elmo Steak House, the oldest steakhouse in Indianapolis, is a culinary institution that every food lover should experience at least once!

Google
This is definitely worth the visit! Food, wine and service were great. Good size portions. The cocktail shrimp are worth the hype! The reason for the 4 star on food is my soup was a tad on the cold side, but still tasty. The reason for the 4 star on atmosphere is there needs to be a dress code. It was mainly the younger generation coming in with athletic shorts and fu flip flops. Not what my expectations for all the hype and for a $500.00 meal.

My husband and I were in Indy for an Earth, Wind, and Fire concert. I made reservations for an early dinner before the concert. My husband is a steak and potato guy and I wanted to treat him. This was our first visit. It's been on my radar for years, but we are rarely in Indianapolis. My brother and his wife have dined here several times, as have many of our friends. I was excited to visit. There's little I can say that hasn't already been said about St. Elmo Steak House. It's an experience. From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in for a treat. We were greeted warmly and seated in a large, beautiful dining room. Our server, Tommy, welcomed us. He was great! We felt special as we had Tommy to ourselves for several minutes! Even after the dining room began to fill up, Tommy remained very attentive to our needs. He answered all of our questions, was very knowledgeable and was just fun! St. Elmo offers one appetizer. A shrimp cocktail with their famous spicy horseradish sauce. I'm not a fan of horseradish, but I did try it! Tommy warned us to take it easy because of the spiciness. It was very good. I'm not a beef eater, so I chose the crab stuffed shrimp. They were wonderful! My husband said his ribeye was one of the best steaks he has ever enjoyed. We loved the navy bean soup and the bread! I'm a big fan of bread!! We finished dinner with peach sorbet. TIP: If you plan to visit soon, the construction downtown Indianapolis is horrible. We had plenty of time, but be warned. We parked in the parking garage which is nearby. Valet parking is also offered. We're already looking forward to a return visit and we're requesting Tommy!!

My family recently moved from California to Indiana, and we chose St. Elmo to celebrate—and wow, what an incredible experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel truly special. Joel, our server, was outstanding—friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive and incredibly kind. Caitlin, the host, went above and beyond to accommodate our reservation and made the process seamless. We were especially impressed that Chef Corey took the time to stop by our table personally, and Kerry, the manager, made a warm visit to welcome us as well. Those personal touches really stood out. The food, of course, was phenomenal—but it was the hospitality that truly made this meal unforgettable. This wasn’t just dinner—it was a celebration, and the St. Elmo team made it feel like one. Beyond five stars. Exemplary. We’ll absolutely be back.

This is a must visit when in Indianapolis. For the shrimp cocktail alone. The cocktail sauce is Da Biznezz. Our waiter Richard was over the top. Very attentive. I had 2 people who had never been here. He took the time to explain everything thing to them. Spot on.

So first and foremost I'm not a huge state person. That being said the menu was outstanding, our waiter was fantastic explained all the different types of state. Made recommendations. But didn't push. We did have a reservation, we got set up in a upstairs room pretty much by ourselves. Food came out completely reasonable time some of the best sides I've ever had I highly recommend their mashed potatoes and their asparagus. Definitely a mainstay. Our waiter had been there for almost 15 years, highly recommend

Absolute coolest place! The food was phenomenal and the entire atmosphere is great. I think one of the things that makes it top grade is the amazing service. The entire staff are so personable. They really seems to love their job and enjoy the customers so it makes the experience fantastic and so much fun.

Yelp
The atmosphere of this restaurant is amazing! It was such a cool vibe. We sat down in the wine cellar. Really great experience for a group, all the servers are amazing! The food was delicious and so filling!! Their Shrimp Cocktail is famous, but it was too spicy for me. Loved their Filet with Bernaise as well, but it over the temp I asked for.

Yelp
I would avoid this place like the plague. The food was not good and the service was worse. It is too loud for conversations and they treat you like cattle. How can a steak house screw up a Manhatten, a rib-eye and a baked potato? This place found a way to mess up all three and also brought around something called bean soup, that was horrible. The prices and the reputation demand more, but they didn't deliver. Never again!

Yelp
Every time I come to Indianapolis we come here for St. Elmo's famous mega-spicy shrimp cocktail and a beautifully-prepared steak. Salads and sides were excellent too, as was the vibrant but convivial atmosphere. The one thing from this meal that was not appreciated was that our server tried to do some shifty up-selling on wine - for example suggesting a $40 glass when we were clearly a group seeking a lower price point. But apart from that we love St. Elmo, and that fabulous cocktail sauce!!

Yelp
Are you really a Hoosier if you haven't eaten at St. Elmo? Have you really, truly visited the Circle City if you haven't dined at this establishment? St. Elmo Steak House is over a century old. Many famous people and professional athletes have eaten here. I've lived in central Indiana for almost a decade, and I finally had a meal at St. Elmo. I'm glad that I've visited, but I think one visit was enough for me. I eat steak maybe once or twice a year, so I don't really know my way around a big piece of meat like other steak lovers do. I got the prime rib, which isn't always available every day, but it was available when I visited (a Monday). They asked me how I wanted it cooked, and I said, "What do you recommend?" And they said, "However you like it," so I ordered my prime rib medium well. It turns out that a medium well prime rib is way too overcooked! My prime rib was charred in lots of spots. It was fine, though, because I was sharing the prime rib with my children, who don't like a lot of pink in their meat. Prime rib comes with au jus and a horseradish sauce. The horseradish sauce was not at all spicy, and tasted more like an aioli. Speaking of sharing: There is no kids menu at St. Elmo, so if you bring your young children, your choices are to have your child order their own entree, or you can share your meal. St. Elmo also has shareable sides, which are more than enough for four people to spilt. They were perfectly fine with us just ordering entrees for the adults and sharing with the kids. We did end up getting a shareable side: the king crab mac and cheese. My kids loved the crab mac and cheese, which I was surprised and delighted by. I thought I was going to have to pick out the crab pieces, but they devoured the entire dish. My favorite part of the meal was my glass of red wine (Malbec) and the Caesar salad, which was cold, briny and perfectly dressed. It's so hard to find a decent Caesar salad anywhere, but you can find a great one here. I loved my salad and wine so much that I might be back to enjoy that combo again at the bar. Our meal ended with two desserts: the creme brûlée and the bourbon butter cake. The creme brûlée was amazing and simple. The bourbon butter cake was rich and decadent -- a gooey cake topped with vanilla bean ice cream. When you cut into the cake, it was steaming from just being removed from the oven, but the ice cream took the edge off a bit, and made the whole dessert come together. If it's on the menu when you visit, the bourbon butter cake is the thing to get. FYI for those wondering: St. Elmo does not validate parking anymore, which is a bummer. They used to, but they don't anymore for reasons. We parked right across the street at the World of Wonders parking garage and paid $20 for around two hours of parking. There might be cheaper parking elsewhere, but World of Wonders is very close.

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING SERVICE AND FOOD! We were in town for a cheer competition and it was my nieces birthday dinner. We didn't know what kind of dress code it was but the staff was 100% incredible--patient, kind and explained to us the menu thoroughly since it was our first time. We enjoyed our steak and soup dinner. I got the lobster bisque and it was rich and creamy!

Yelp
Impeccable service. Our waiter Juan was top notch. He helped us decide on the sauce for our steak. He checked on us often. There are sooooooo many employees!! Everyone was nice, smiled and seemed happy to work there. The ambiance is old school steakhouse. Very dark, ambient lighting and photos on the wall. Ribeye medium rare- cooked perfectly. 14 ounces- we shared this steak. Mash potatoes- delicious and smooth made with red potatoes Creamed Spinach- delicious. Creamy and flavorful. King crab Mac n cheese- small amount of cream but the Mac and cheese was creamy and decadent. Navy bean soup- delicious with a Smokey finish Bread basket- super fresh. Peppered butter and even included cheese strips for the keto peeps. Shrimp cocktail!! Get it! That horseradish is bomb!! Really great experience and I recommend 10/10

Yelp
Eating at the iconic St. Elmo's restaurant in Indianapolis is an unforgettable experience. From the minute you walk through the doors, you feel the energy. With no reservations, we walked in and found seats at their historic bar. Staff members greeted us and gave us menus, including the new Happy Hour menu. Locally made Barkeeps vodka was on special, so of course, I ordered a dirty martini. OMG, that martini was smooth. My husband had his sights on their famous shrimp cocktail. With big chucks of the most potent horseradish on earth, he ate every morsel of those shrimp til his forehead turned a brilliant red. I was anxious to try their lobster bisque. The bisque is velvety with many bits of lobster throughout. It was the best lobster bisque I've had. (Ask for it if you don't see it on the menu.) For dinner, I ordered the Chopped BLT Salad. The plate of salad was immense, and I dug in before I even remembered to take a photo. Damn. There were chucks of thick cut bacon, tomatoes and the vinaigrette was perfectly tart. St. Elmo's has been in the same location since 1902. While they are famous for steaks, they offer lighter options, too. If you're visiting, THIS is the place to eat. The servers are engaging and friendly. Food came out quickly. We found metered street parking, but they have valet parking as well.

Yelp
I'm in Indiana for a convention and all of the residents are telling me that I haven't been to Indianapolis until I've been to St Elmo's Steakhouse and had the shrimp cocktail. This restaurant is a staple in Indianapolis, it's been around since 1933, so of course I had to go see what all hype was all about. I ordered shrimp cocktail and a cup of lobster bisque. The lobster bisque was phenomenal which it should have been for $12 but it would have been nice to have some crackers or bread with it (but it was not). Now about this shrimp cocktail; I received 4 large prawns that were so fresh it seemed like they just came out of the ocean, but the shrimp were SMOTHERED in about a 1/4 cup of horseradish sauce so thick, spicy and strong that it made my nose run and set my throat on fire! Luckily I had a full bottle of water to put the fire out and to rinse off my shrimp. In the future I suggest that St Elmo's puts the cocktail sauce on the side. The staff was friendly and professional and the restaurant was clean and well maintained.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place doesn't have 5 Stars!!! It's centrally located in downtown and the oldest steakhouse in Indianapolis. Make reservations!! St Elmo's is an exceptional steakhouse where culinary mastery meets an unforgettable dining experience. Featuring perfectly aged, hand-selected cuts of beef, each steak is grilled to perfection and served alongside gourmet sides like a loaded mashed potatoes and innovative sauces. The elegant yet inviting ambiance, paired with an extensive wine list curated to complement every dish, makes St Elmo's the ideal destination for steak lovers and food enthusiasts alike. You must try their shrimp cocktail and be ready to wake up your taste buds . The cowboy rib eye is to die for. The drinks are poured VERY heavy . You might not have room for dessert, but order some anyway!! The service was excellent. You'll thank me later.

Yelp
St. Elmo's is an Indy must, and I was so excited to take my sister her for her birthday dinner after an Eras Tour weekend. We started with the iconic shrimp cocktail with a not-so-average horseradish sauce. Brace yourself, it's strongggg! Our server recommended that we also use the cocktail sauce in our complimentary bean soup, which was so delicious. For my entree, I got the crab stuffed shrimp, which comes with a bed of fresh linguine in a wine-infused cream sauce. The entree came with 4 hearty shrimp - by this point, I was already full. We also ordered a side of brussel sprouts to share, which also had bits of ham. The brussel sprouts came in a balsamic sauce and a red pepper flake garnish. Since it was my sister's birthday, she received the cutest St. Elmo's birthday card and a complimentary creme brulee for desert. The creme brulee could easily be split between 2 people. The inside of the creme brulee was light and not overly sweet, which was the perfect way to end our meal. St. Elmo's food is already top-notch, but the restaurant ambiance and customer service just adds another layer of elegance. Everyone should experience St. Elmo's when visiting Indy!

Yelp
So we've had many people tell us wonderful things about St. Elmo's steak house so we were very excited to try this joint out. We were greeted and escorted upstairs to a private dining room. From there we dived right into the menu. We ordered the shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, lobster bisque and the cowboy ribeye, with a blueberry white chocolate bread pudding. Here is my breakdown of each dish: 1) shrimp cocktail: very delicious- be prepared for the horseradish cause it shot up my nose and immediately cleared my nasal passages. 2) Caesar salad: very unique but very delicious. Tasted a little more sour than your usual Caesar but it had loads and loads of cheese! Yummy! 3) Lobster Bisque: my boyfriend really liked it but was a little too tomatoey for my liking! 4) cowboy ribeye cooked medium rare: very yummy I'm not usually a big fan of dry aged steaks so I stuck to your traditional ribeye and it was quite good! The sides are all delicious. Especially the mashed potatoes. I was a big fan of the mash! 5) blueberry bread pudding was huge and out of this world delicious! Would definitely come back again and try everything else on this menu!! Service was great too!

Yelp
I've been to Indy a few times and always wanted to try the iconic St.Elmos, but we are typically in town for football and I never took the time to plan ahead and make a reservation. This time I upped my game and made my reservation at the end of August for our trip in mid October. I was honestly a little shocked that I made the reservation 2 months in advance and they only had 4pm and 10ish available for a party of 4 on Saturday, but I was happy to snag the 4pm when I did! ( let this be your sign to plan ahead!) Since we had been taking about going to St. Elmos for years I honestly did not check recent Yelp reviews before making my reservation. Between the restaurants reputation ( mainly word of mouth/ listings on top 10 steak houses in the us on the internet) and the high demand for reservations ( which I thought was a indicator of a good experience to come) I was pretty hyped going into the experience. An hour or so before dinner I turned to Yelp to help me decide what I was going to order. I filtered to the most recent reviews and to my surprise there was an odd amount of unhappy customers lately. I honestly almost let the unpleasant reviews scare me away but I am so glad I didn't. Drinks: Extra dirty vodka martini with blue cheese olives. A simple choice on my end and a flawless execution on their end. Meal: Lobster bisque soup Steak-28 oz porterhouse Gorgonzola butter Baked potato The lobster bisque was to die for. I subitituted this for an up charge and it was worth it. The porterhouse is big enough to share which is what we did. We ordered a medium rare cook. It came out more on the medium side ( which had also been mentioned in other reviews) so keep that in mind when ordering. I added the Gorgonzola butter as a safety precaution, but the steak was very well seasoned so I did not use much as it was perfect without it. The baked potato was your typical baked potato. I wish I would have gotten more creative with my side order because there were other more interesting options. The other people in our group ordered the ribeye and fish special which was a sea bass. They were both happy with their meals. The portion of the seabass was a little smaller than anticipated.

Yelp
This is my second time visiting St. Elmo, and I've loved it both times. Our server, Glen, was wonderful and so knowledgeable. We started off with lemon drops and shrimp cocktail - the shrimp is horseradish hot, but SO good. We ended up placing a second order! All of our food was really good - I will say my potatoes and asparagus came out lukewarm, but they were still really, really good. I love old school steakhouses like this, it's a really fun spot to go and has a classic steakhouse vibe.

Yelp
Was the perfect date night to celebrate our anniversary. Patrick was our server and went above and beyond to make our experience great. Steaks were perfect and the famous Shrimp cocktail did not disappoint.

Yelp
Decided to come here with a friend for devour, we started upstairs and had a cocktail, I had a tasty vodka dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Then for dinner we went down to the basement (didn't know that was an option) to enjoy dinner! All of my food was amazing! Had a wedge salad, and then fillet mignon and mashed potatoes! Which were all savory/tasty and delicious. Our service was great, this is a must visit place if you live in Indy or are visiting.

Yelp
I had a wonderful time celebrating my Birthday at St Elmo. They were booked solid, but my friend and I were able to get a seat at the bar, and the staff took great care of us. I'm not a shrimp cocktail person, but they were churning those out of the back like nobody's business! My porterhouse was cooked perfectly, and was delicious. The Christmas feel from the outside to the inside really set the mood for a special meal and time with a great friend. It for sure is a little pricey, but def worth trying once and knocking it off the bucket list.

Yelp
A city steakhouse that cares. From the greeting at the door to a bartender grabbing my attention to point out an open bar seat and a drink recommendation, this place is top notch. My three things: 1) Ambiance is all there. This place has hosted anyone who is anyone in the NFL (NFL Combine is hosted just up the road). Old school wood bar, glass backed bar, and plenty of high end sports to choose from. I tried the St Elmo's Mule (4/5) and the St Elmo's Old Fashion (3/5). 2) Menu is concise and easy to order. I did the 16oz Aged Ribeye with a Pittsburg char (medium rare middle). They cooked it just like I asked and it was a solid piece of meat. Accouterments were the Navy Bean soup (5/5 best I ever had) and a loaded baked potato (large spud). 3) As I looked around everyone in there was happy and the bar area was hopping, plenty of staff working behind the bar didn't have to wait long for anything. Environment was loud but that's the bar scene on a Friday night. This was a punch list place for me and it was great met all my expectations. I have had better steaks for the $$ but this one was

Yelp
This steakhouse has a great atmosphere. The steak is good and prices are very reasonable as is their signature shrimp cocktail. I wish they had a better selection of appetizers. Their service is outstanding and will guide you through the meal making ffor a very pleasant experience.

Yelp
The steak was way too thin for a bone in ribeye and over cooked. It definitely needed the bourbon sauce to help it. Someone ordered the prime rib which looked great and I think next time I'd try that The mushrooms were good and the green beans were just bland. The famous shrimp cocktail was good. The horseradish is a bit much though. Be light with the sauce. The espresso martini was almost perfect. So delicious! Service was good.

Yelp
Came here on a very busy Saturday night with the Detroit Lions in town and all their fans. Got to meet Lomas Brown and Dan Miller. We sat right at our reservation time downstairs. Service was very good. Steaks include soup and a side dish. We ordered 2 shrimp cocktails. Probably a 3/5 due to the hype. Shrimp medium sized and needed more sauce. Ceaser salad was good. Porterhouse was sliced but fairly dry but tasted ok. Seared Tuna was good. Creamed spinach was ok. Baked potatoe was good. Crab Mac and cheese was decent as well. Butter cake for dessert was good as was the chocolate mouse pie. Prices typical of a steak restaurant. Ambiance was ok and a bit loud.

Yelp
Obviously when you go to St Elmo's expectations are high. We tried their brunch before the Colts game for the first time. It delivered! The chili was the star for me. The cup is a big portion and you get cornbread too. The sliders are very good as well. Bring the big bucks, but if you're going to STE you already knew that. Bloody Mary and Mimosas are good, but quite pricey. NOTE: Online they won't let you set a brunch reservation, but a ton of people did have reservations so you must have to call. If not get there early because there's only 10 first come first serve bar spots.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Must-go if you are in downtown Indy. Our server was so kind and they were especially helpful with my lactose-intolerance issue. Ordered the famous shrimp cocktail and flat iron steak with baked potato. It's the oldest steakhouse in Indianapolis, opened in 1902! The building is a historical gem.

Yelp
I was heading to Indy to attend an industry trade show with 1 coworker, and as soon as I found out, I made a reservation here at SESH (St. Elmo Steak House). I got an 8:30 reservation as we couldn't make it to 5:30 due to the flights coming in. I don't regret dining that late at all! We both love food (I'd bet me more than him) so we decided no holds barred. It was on the company dime but we went a bit overboard so we split it up a bit between a company card and some personal cards which the waiter made super easy. Speaking of the waitstaff, they were all amazing throughout the night! I'll say if you like a spicy shrimp cocktail, I haven't had anything even close to what they offer here. It's not spicy like hot sauce, more like wasabi due to the horseradish. I don't know what they do, but this is a great way to open up your sinuses before devouring more food. It's pricey at $20 for 4 shrimp, but I'd get it every time! The steaks actually come with accompaniments which is nice for a place like this. I ordered the Filet which came with a soup (bean and ham) and potato. I decided to upgrade the soup to Lobster Bisque and it was a great decision. The bisque was the lightish pink color and loaded with chunks of lobster. So good, especially with the fresh ground black pepper decorating the meniscus of the delicious cup. The crab Mac n cheese was also calling our names, so we did get that as well. It was amazing and one of the best parts of the meal. I ordered Mashed Taters and barely touched them as I was too busy with the other stuff! The steak... oh my... that steak! I put it in my top 5 ever! They cooked it to a perfect medium rare and it had a super flavorful seasoning. I sliced it up and devoured it. I shared a piece with my coworker who said it was way better than his ribeye. We also had some cocktails. The Elmo Cola was a drink that was their special bourbon with a glass bottle of Coca Cola. They brought it out with the whiskey and cherries in a glass of ice, then you added the cola yourself. Excellent cocktail. The Old Fashioned was also quite delicious. I think there were two on the menu and I had the one that was more traditional. It was packed, even at 8:30 (although by 10ish it was starting to clear out). I highly recommend making a reservation here if you're in town and like a good steak. If you don't go all out with apps, sides and cocktails, you can get out of this place at a reasonable price. You only live once, and since I don't live in Indy, I decided to get what I wanted and was glad I did. It was about $300 for two of us with all that food which honestly, wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. The steaks were in the $50 range on their own, so the other stuff definitely adds up. TLDR: For shame! But go here, get a filet, and thank me. 10 Stars for SESH!

Yelp
Great service at the bar upstairs AND at our table downstairs. Old timey cheers-like location. Famous people on the walls. Amazing food and drinks. We got the New York steak and filet both medium rare (one came rare). We ordered red wine, old fashioned, martini, New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. My husband regrets not sending his New York steak back because he ordered medium rare and he got rare- and didn't enjoy it as much as he could have- but my filet was perfect. I wished I got the garlic mashed. Bathrooms were clean and the right ambiance. Loved it. Will be talking about this anniversary dinner forever. Next time we'll just send the steak back

Yelp
3-4 stars How dare I rate the most iconic steakhouse in Indy anything less than 5 stars?! They didn't cook my $75 filet correctly. Also didn't cook my daughter's $75 filet correctly. Everything else was fabulous... the sides, the service, the atmosphere. But come on, don't charge so much for food you cant ensure it's cooked correctly. We spent $900 for 5 of us. Two of us couldn't finish our steaks. Not everyone likes their steaks bloody. The 'best shrimp cocktail' reputation won't last forever. Maybe they just had bad night. You decide.

Yelp
St. Elmos is an Indianapolis staple that has stood the test of time. We came in with a large group at 4:30 and they did a nice job with the service. Started with the shrimp cocktail, which was quite unique. It has a lot of horseradish and a bit of a kick but the spice doesn't linger. Everyone also gets a bread basket, which had pumpernickel, crackers and onion breads, all delicious. Entrees come with Navy bean soup and a potato choice, which made prices seem a little more reasonable. Soup was decent. My steak was a little overcooked. Their mashed potatoes were amazing - truly spectacular. We skipped dessert because we were so full!

Yelp
Well, I FINALLY made it to St Elmo! As a fan of historical locations, I was so excited to notice some signed portraits of Donald O'Connor, Lillian Gish, Sophie Tucker, Bob Newhart, and more on my way in and out of the restaurant. Rick was my server and he was delightful. I enjoyed a fantastic cocktail in addition to the shrimp cocktail. Both were heavenly! The bread basket here is also incredible. My steak and potatoes were preceded by a lovely navy bean soup. This was such a wonderful meal to enjoy. I HIGHLY recommend visiting this location any time of year!

Yelp
This is a must stop at least once when you're in Indy. So iconic, beautiful ambiance, great service and amazing food. You have to order the shrimp cocktail with the hot cocktail sauce, it is their signature dish. We had a St Elmo's virgin in our group and forgot to warn him about how strong the horseradish is. It's so good, but he took a very generous dip and said quote: "I thought I was gonna die." He was fine and went back for more immediately.

Yelp
I wanted to leave a glowing review for St. Elmo's on our 3-year anniversary, but unfortunately, I can't. We ordered the prime rib and requested it rare, but it arrived lukewarm at best. I was disappointed to have spent $50 on a cold steak and worried about how it would sit with me. On a positive note, everything else was excellent--the ambiance, our waiter, and the shrimp cocktail were all superb. However, when dining at a steakhouse with such a reputation, a great steak is a must. Unfortunately, St. Elmo's missed the mark this time.

Yelp
The steakhouse was awarded a James Beard Foundation Award for America's Classic. Opened in 1902, it is the oldest Indianapolis steakhouse. The place has an old school feel. While we were being seated, the server made small talk. What he said rubbed me the wrong way though. The rest of the dinner service was good. We were given a complimentary bread basket. There were 5 of us, but only given 4 breads. There are two different kinds and I enjoyed the one I had. The shrimp cocktail is a must- 4 jumbo shrimp served with their spicy, signature cocktail sauce. Spicy is right- the shrimp were smothered with horseradish. My eyes teared up and my nose burned. My steak came with navy bean soup and redskin mashed potatoes. The soup was comforting and I liked the pieces of ham. I went with the ribeye- fatty. I enjoyed my bf's New York strip more. While the steaks were good, they taste like any other steak to me. It was a lot of food, so we had leftover steak for breakfast the next day.

Yelp
Valet parking at front door for 15.00 and it's a really nice restaurant. Staffing is plentiful and your every need is met before you even know you need anything this is a elegant, romantic intimate place to take a great day to when you are trying to impress that, and of course always start off with their famous shrimp cocktail and who comes to Saint Elmo steakhouse without trying one of their perfectly aged and cooked steaks this visit I tried the Saint Elmo cola and oh my goodness I was happily impressed Finish off with dessert and your evening is like a dream. The service here is top-tier. It will make sure you have a wonderful evening.

Yelp
If you've never been, you need the experience! A group of six of us were traveling to a Notre Dame game. We stayed in Indy, and two of us had been to St. Elmo's and four had not. All of us had a great time, and with drinks and wine, it worked out to about $200 per person and all of us felt it was worth it!! We all started with their famous shrimp cocktail. The sauce clears the sinuses!! We all then ordered steaks. The picture is of my rib eye with a fully loaded baked potato. Others got a different rib eye which I missed on the menu. There is one that is thicker--go with that one. For dessert we had a bourbon bread pudding. Delicious!! The best part is the wait staff is friendly and fun and they will address you by name all night long. Love this place!

Yelp
Ok...I have heard about this place for years! It was always on the best steakhouses in America lists you used to see in the inflight magazines (RIP magazines!). I found myself in Indy staying literally a couple of blocks away and stopped in when they opened for a seat at the bar and bar menu (fun fact...apparently happy hour is against the law in the state of Indiana...who knew!). I went with the "world famous" shrimp cocktail, bacon and a 4 oz filet Oscar style. First...the shrimp cocktail. I am always wary of ordering seafood from a landlocked location...but hey...it is world famous. Uhhh...well...maybe to the locals. The shrimp was ok...clearly frozen...living in Oregon and enjoying fresh shrimp frequently...well...this was not that. But their cocktail sauce was supposed to be the show...they give you a LOT of the sauce and man is it strong. It's like horseradish married Chinese mustard...frankly way too powerful for my tastes -- but this seems to be a hit there for years so maybe I am in the minority on this one. Bacon was also just ok...nothing special. And the same for the very small steak....better than Outback but not on the same level of many of the other highly regarded steakhouses in the country...and I have been to many. If you are a first time visitor to Indy like I was I would still suggest giving them a try for the experience..:but temper your expectations with the food...it is not out of this world -- just decent.

Yelp
Always stop for a bite before heading out to Purdue in West Lafayette. The navy bean soup is worth the stop alone. Careful- that shrimp sauce is HOT. Exceptional pork chop and salad this round. Always consistent and positive experience with the service and the quality of the food

Yelp
Iconic steakhouse in downtown Indy. The winner here is the customer service, next the shrimp appetizer, no wonder is so famous. Now for the meat, my porterhouse was not tender. I can find more tender steaks at Publix. maybe I got a fighter bull and not a tender softy cow. Just my luck.

Yelp
Look around and you see that the institutions of American society are shattering. The Supreme Court cannot be trusted, bridges are crumbling, people are making fortunes from cryptocurrency and bitcoin. In an uncertain world, it is reassuring to see that a classic place like St. Elmo Steakhouse stays true. The decor is classic and transports one back in time. The staff is professional. Our server TJ did a fantastic job. He ushered us through a fantastic gastronomic journey. We did not use the valet service as we ubered. I will say, I wish they did not use tablets. I don't want to see any technology in this institution. Tipping on a handheld device felt wrong. The food lived up to the hype. Upgrading to the lobster bisque was the right move. Loved the hint of sherry, classic. Drinks were ice cold. Expertly made martini. Probably the best wedge salad I've had. The bacon was crispy and chunky. The steak was charred on the outside but perfectly rare inside. The porterhouse was large so we split it. Flavors of the sides were on point. I'll come back when I am in town and in need of assurance that things can remain steady.

Yelp
I had a wonderful dining experience with some fellow coworkers during one of their busiest weeks of the year because of the PRI show. The service was absolutely amazing.... probably the best I ever had. The lobster bisque soup was delicious with plenty of chunks of lobster. The steak was perfectly cooked with good flavor. Though my favorite part of it all was their famous shrimp cocktail that is so deliciously painful you keep on asking for more.

Yelp
Shrimp cocktail was to die for! Got the lamb rack and only wish it was cut up instead of presented as a whole rack to cut myself but was cooked to perfection. Filet was perfectly cooked and tender, as expected. Brussels sprouts weren't my fave, had a lot going on and wish they just stuck to more simple seasoning. Service was exceptional, answered all our questions and even gave us recommendations on where to go next. Very speakeasy type ambience, with varying degrees of outfits ranging from Buccees t shirts to cocktail wear.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this old school restaurant in Indy. I would come back, just to experience this again. The cocktails were special, the service was special, the LAMB was so special.... It was an experience. It took me back to a more elegant time, where people appreciated old school service and food. Not too fancy, just comfortable and "lived in" if you know what I mean. LOVED IT. Get the lamb.... For real.

Yelp
This is a destination restaurant. I eat there every chance I get. The food is of the highest caliber, the service is impeccable and the ambiance takes you back to a much simpler time. Tim O was our server. He was very nice and attentive. I had the shrimp cocktail and the ribeye. My son had the caesar salad and filet. If you are in Indy put this in the agenda.

Yelp
Great steaks but we could not find the revivatol. Also, I tasted notes of baby flavor in the coke. P.S last December I was accused of embezzling money from a childrens hospital

Yelp
An American classic and worth every penny. Enjoy the shrimp, the steaks and the service

Yelp
Fantastic dining experience. Although a meal can be quite pricy for two; it is completely worth it! Excellent service from the moment you walk in until you leave. Everything is beautifully laid out and made extremely clear. The waiter David was a gentleman and truly helped us navigate the menu. I opted for the filet mignon and it was not only cooked perfectly but also it was amazingly delicious. I also recommend having their signature navy bean soup and finishing out with a dessert if you still have room. This historic and cozy steakhouse should be a must stop for anyone that's visiting this city.

Yelp
One of my favorite date night spots in Indianapolis. Great menu selection outside of the steak

Yelp
F'n fantastic! Everything after this is basically the same idea... Two things: 1. I am 99.99% sure mobsters going between Chicago and New York City ate here on a regular basis. 2. At the bar for two are the best seats in the house. The service cannot be beat. The food is amazing. Forget about your diet for one night. You'll remember this experience for a good long time. The steak, sides, soups, drinks, and wine list are all good. Going with staff recommendations will never let you down. Dim lights, red carpet and wood give this place the feeling of the 1920's in the 2020's.
