The 18 Best Salads In LA

"Your Order: Chinese Chicken Salad Stanley’s in Sherman Oaks doesn’t try to reinterpret the chinese chicken salad, but it does perfect it. Everything about this classic version is light, bright, and kind of impossible not to eat at a ferocious rate, from the juicy shredded chicken to the generous drizzle of tangy sesame dressing that coats every piece of lettuce. It’s also not weighed down by fried wonton strips—instead, crunchy rice noodles, slivered almonds, and a reasonable amount of mandarin oranges are showered on top. If you’re looking for more of an agrodolce feel, opt for Amy’s Grapefruit Salad, which swaps in avocado and is made with the same delicious dressing." - brant cox, sylvio martins, arden shore, garrett snyder, nikko duren

The 16 Great Restaurants For A Lunch Meeting In LA

"Stanley’s is a daytime spot in Sherman Oaks that’s refreshingly unpretentious. Its proximity to major studios and talent agencies makes it a reliable option for a Hollywood power lunch, but not the kind that requires schmoozing. You come here with coworkers you actually like—maybe ones you even consider friends—for a relaxed, rolled-up-sleeve meal full of things you haven’t thought about since 2004: turkey burgers, pizzas topped with sun-dried tomatoes, and one of LA's best Chinese chicken salads tossed tableside. " - jess basser sanders, brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

Stanley's - Review - Sherman Oaks - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Stanley’s is a casual all-day spot in Sherman Oaks that’s popular with families and Hollywood types talking shop over lunch. It also has a menu that’s fully stuck in the early 2000s: turkey burgers, chinese chicken salads, and pizzas topped with sun-dried tomatoes (when’s the last time you thought about those?). But the menu’s endearing lack of edge and innovative spirit is actually very pleasant. Stanley’s does classic lunch options well, including a beautiful grilled artichoke appetizer with chipotle aioli, a thick and juicy kobe beef burger, and, yes, the very popular chinese chicken salad—a near-perfect version with tangy sesame dressing." - Sylvio Martins

My first time here, ordered pork chops with applesauce. Came with sweet potatoes and two sides. Mashed was quite good and generous helping. Roasted veg was whatever. Two thin pork chop slices tasted like pancakes. Weird. Friend’s branzino was too fishy. My daughter was very happy with her chicken Cesar chopped salad. Hubby also satisfied with burger. Accommodated our dog which was very nice.

Was able to walk in and get a booth on a Tuesday night. It was definitely busy, but not packed. I started with the chicken soup. INCREDIBLE! The chicken was moist and tender. I don't know if they roast it or smoke it, but the flavor is incredible. And the amount of chicken they give you is insane! (Picture for proof) My entrée was the short rib. That I believe was a special for the night. . It melted in my mouth. Absolutely fantastic! And my water glass stayed full the entire meal!

Google
What a wonderful restaurant where you are greeted with a warm welcome and friendly service. As a recommendation for those craving a salad - my choice was the Amy's salad (filled with chicken, avocado, cashews and grapefruit). The dressing is light and very tasty. The warm bread that is offered is delicious - 2 slices and they disappeared quickly. If you have a sweet tooth, order the key lime pie for dessert. A perfect pair of tart and sweet. Highly recommend!

Google
🚨Free bread alert🚨 Stanley’s Restaurant remains one of the last institutions of America that has free bread - and it’s delicious too. Warm and yummy. Our drinks were also delicious and the turkey burger (not pictured) was life changing for me, but I’m also not a regular meat eater so take that with a grain of salt. The only strange thing was a customer at a bar taking up 3 seats (with her backpack and laptop charger) when there was a long line of people waiting 30+ minutes to be sat. I understand the staff might have get uncomfortable saying something but thought I would mention it.

Google
Nice spot to have dinner. The fish was perfectly cooked and the lemon sauce was delicious. Valet $9 if you can't find street parking.

Google
I went to Stanley's based on Google reviews and rating. Excellent food, the best place I visited in a 2 week vacation.

Google
A perfect lunch spot... The menu stuck in time, you know what, that is so great that they are not focused on being cool and incentive and now... Just excellent basics with a now twist that fits the bulk... Had a chicken taco salad that was perfect. Service cement. Place busy but we were not rushed. I had a hard time not going for the classics that were competing with my more healthy choice, but whatever you want that's real food and smoke and not designed just for show, this is the place. Enjoy !

Yelp
My mom is in town visiting so I had to take her to my favorite restaurant Stanley's. She thought the interior was so cute! booths were super comfy. The staff greeted us and complimented my moms outfit (so she was extra happy) Our server had the best personality! genuine, sweet and fun! she brought me two passion fruit unsweetened iced teas out at a time (cos she knows I drink a lot hahaha) the were perfectly full of ice like I love. Our food came out exceptionally flawless. the salmon is my fav salmon in the world. (and I've eaten salmon all over the world at thousands of restaurants) I stand by this statement! my absolute favorite! the Caesar salad has so much flavor and is the best Caesar in LA. The Mac n cheese is soooooooo gooooood! the bread and butter to start is always so warm and delicious! My mom loved it and already asked to go again before she goes back home. thank you for a great experience!

Yelp
A throw-back to the velvet lounges of the fifties, this place is our cozy go-to, almost weekly. With a beautiful shiny bar, lovely old-timey cocktails, and delicious home-made food at a reasonable price, my husband and I sit on our regular royal-blue settees like old movie stars, watching the world go by. It gets busy and bustling, so go early at night. For you jocks, there are also TVs showing sport (yawn). Badabing, badaboom!

Yelp
Oh how the mighty have fallen. I remember Stanley's from before they moved. Used to be pretty good. This was definitely NOT that! The ambiance is that of a diner, rather than the kinda upscale Boulevard eatery that it used to be. The food was a on the down side of mediocre. The bread was great! Nice and hot. Stingy on foil packets of butter... not even nice butter lol. But still, it was good! That's where good stopped though. We sent back the back the appetizers as they were TERRIBLE! The mac and cheese was liquidy and flavorless and the calamari was absolutely disgusting! Tasted like old dead fish. I only had a tiny bite after my friend asked me to taste it. She'd had a couple of bites. I spit it out Blech! We both had salads, which we decided we'd try. They weren't awful, but weren't great either. Service wasn't great either... Needless to say, we won't be back! Edit: And we both had stomach issues later that night. So.... yeah...

Yelp
Great service. Food is amazingly good. A bar friendly atmosphere. My boyfriend and I eat here once a week!

Yelp
My group of 3 went on a Sunday at 11:30am. Menu is extensive with breakfast & lunch items. Be sure to ask for their special menus. We ordered French toast & Huevos Rancheros. Food was very tasty. Portions were large. Total cost (food, 1 tea drink, tax, tip) was about $25-$30 per person. Service was friendly & satisfactory. Facility was clean. Free parking on several nearby streets & Valet Parking are available. I would return to try other entrees.

Yelp
We were here on Monday for dinner. Seated quickly as it wasnt to busy. It's a nice location with friendly staff. Parking is tough valet or street parking. Food was good and dessert. only reason not 5 stars it's because it felt very rushed. We had just ordered appetizers and server came back and asked "what do you want as entree." Everything we ordered came out at the same time so table full of food and not enough space. Yes. We probably will be back or order to go.

Yelp
Love their kale caesar salad and grilled artichokes. Stanley's also has my favorite grilled chicken breast - it's juicy, plump, and flavorful. They've been around forever and still my special treat for myself. Old fashioned quality standards. The best.

Yelp
Had the salmon salad for lunch today and it was delicious. Waitress was great. We sat outside, and other that the table being wobbly, everything was excellent. I wish the parking situation was better, but there isn't much anyone can do about that.

Lauren W.

Yelp
Local restaurant with delicious food. Kebabs and Chicken pasta are my favorites. Large portions and hot fresh bread. Easy for take out or dining in
google avatar

Yelp
Good food fine service. The Amy salad is a celebration for the mouth.. steak sandwich is killer.

Yelp
The food is always good here, but it is so noisy. It took almost an hour to get our food. The food's good but if you want to talk to who you're with, it's too noisy. I've been here many times. This is my last visit here.

Ron D.

Yelp
Food was amazing only to be out done by the outstanding service by everyone involved. I have been back already.

Yelp
Alright. Time to adjust my review. Stanley's needs to up their game. We order take out about once a week and dine in about twice a month and while some food items are still good enough like the Chinese chicken salad and burgers, certain staples are declining like the guacamole and chips rancid chips three time in one month. The guacamole not fresh at all like it used to be. Sweet potato fries soggy for take out and dine in. Zucchini noodles, were perfection until recently. Tuna melt!! Soggy. dine in and take out. These are items I have been ordering since the old location. A lot has changed.

Yelp
Large portions for the price, quick and friendly service. The food is delicious- try the Brussel sprouts with cashews- it's delicious

Yelp
Stanley's - on Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks Amy's grapefruit salad is amazing! - fresh delicious and healthy! Butter lettuce with shredded cooked chicken, fresh ripe grapefruit slices, cashews and avocado with a delicious light citrus sesame dressing. Your mouth will get a workout with all the chewing, but every last bite is so satisfying! The Lentil soup (garnished with parsley)is delicious with vegetables and lentils at a beautiful temperature - nice and hot. The sourdough bread also amazing and goes great with a lentil soup. Nice chew - nice crust! Really good sourdough! So many places have mediocre sourdough. I also had the "Cool as a Cucumber" martini. That was really good and it paired really nicely with Amy's grapefruit salad. I love that the salad didn't come out until I was finished with my soup. Make sure with the salad you give it a good stir with your fork has a lot of the delicious dressing is on the bottom of the bowl.

Yelp
Stanleys has great food and great service. Vanessa made great suggestions for my order including the Chinese chicken salad, Steak salad and the variety of tacos. The salmon is outstanding and the bartender Sam was very helpful. Thank you Vanessa and I will definitely be back. Dan H.

Barb S.

Yelp
I hadn't been here in a long time. Went for takeout grapefruit salad. Really good! As good as I remember. Will be coming back. Only reason not 5 stars is parking.
google avatar

Layla S.

Yelp
Came in with a client of mine and gave name for table. They indicated the table in corner would be available just need to be cleared. Several more people came in after me...the table was cleared and they proceeded to seat 6 other people before me. She then acted like I never gave her my name. Don't bring a client here...save the embarrassment

Yelp
My wife and I are big fans of Stanley's. We live close by, eat there often, enjoy the quality and variety of foods. When my brother and niece visit, they always insist on having dinner at Stanley's. I consider Stanley' be an upscale, moderately priced neighborhood restaurant. It is not a cafe, a diner or a coffee shop. At such places, paper napkins are appropriate. But Stanley's uses paper napkins. Evan a competitive restaurant down the street, The Local Peasant, which is a pub with limited menu focusing on beers, uses cloth. I implore Stanley's to switch to cloth. It is so classy to take a folded cloth napkin and place it on one's lap than to tear open cutlery wrapped in paper. It is my strong feeling that Stanley's use of paper napkins cheapens the facility. I implore them to switch touse cloth! Steve and Ruth Greenbaum, 4242 Stansbury Avenue PH6

Yelp
Parking is the only drawback. Other than that horrible experience Stanley's is a great place to dine with friends

Yelp
Heads up about extra money added to take out bill Start off saying the food is good. Always order Chinese Chicken Salad. But My friend and I ate there the other day. I got a salad and took one home with me. Said was $20.00 but I asked for more on the salad at resturant. I understand the uncharge. For Mandarin Oranges $2.00 Rice noodles $2.00 Another basket of Bread. $4.00 Very good bread. So I fully understand where the extra $8.00 on the bill. Now here is the point I don't get. The Salad to go was also $4.00 More expensive. I questioned the manager who was not very nice about explaining. Like I should have known, and he told me it's the container the salad was in and the little containers that the parts of salad went into since I asked for things on the side. I told him they should have told me about the uncharge so I could have decided. He told me the plastic is expensive and it's in anticipation of the tariff. So if you want food to go know your going to be have to pay more for take out. Not sure they do this but I have been told by others to bring your own containers for take out food. .

Yelp
This was a wonderful meal. I was lucky enough to meet the owner Gregg, who was very generous with his time. Our server Lynell was appropriately attentive and very helpful. I requested a non-alcoholic drink. Lynell asked me for some of my favorite flavors and brought me back a delightfully refreshing beverage with fresh strawberries and rosemary. I brought home the pesto, zucchini, noodles, heavenly. Just enough pesto to flavor the vegetables without overpowering them, beautifully balanced. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

Lucky B.

Yelp
I love the wings here. And kobe tacos. Been ordering from here for yrs. Today i tried the chicken noodle soup. Smh. Honestly. Thats not how you make chicken for noodle soup. They cut up grilled chicken threw in the soup and that made it completely bitter. I expected better. Especially for that price too.

Yelp
So we had an interesting experience. Hostess who was nice, sat us outside which was fine. We kind of felt forgotten at times, but it was nice to be on our own. Dinner - food was amazing. Had their grilled chicken pasta. Seriously, it was amazing. I rarely see cashews in pasta so it was a nice change and very delicious. My issue and complaint came with dessert. Their mousse is not really a mousse, it is similar to flourless cake. What was described on the menu was mousse; I wanted something cold, light and airy and what I received was dense and warm. My partner had the chocolate chip cookie pie which on the menu sounded like a pizzokie, but when it came out part of it was warm and cookie like and the other part felt and tasted like undercooked cookie dough. When we spoke to the server who was great throughout most of the meal but it took a turn when discussing the dessert concerns. We spoke to the manager and I even showed him what a mousse looks like which is what I was expecting. We explain the concerns of the cookie pie which he said it's meant to be cookie dough like. Hopefully, they take our concerns seriously and maybe just update the menu to reflect what the desserts actually are at their establishment versus what the rest of the world knows it as or reads it as. I would go back and have lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Food is excellent and our server iriana the best we had a great time highly recommended to try the salmon so delicious

Yelp
Ohhhhh, you have to try their Crispy Brussel Sprouts! These are really special and delicious! Still love their Amy's Salad and their Grilled Artichokes! Save room for their Blueberry Cobbler! (btw - valet is only for the dinner hours)

Yelp
My friend who recommended the Chinese Chicken Salad to me recently passed away. Not only was he a wonderful friend, he was a wonderful person. I will be visiting periodically just for the memories of the Chinese Chicken Salads

Yelp
This is a tough review. I've always enjoyed Stanley's, but it's been problematic the last few times. I ordered the ahi tuna bowl and it first came with the tuna not seared but like fully cooked. When they brought out new tuna, it was icy like it was cooked and put in fridge. Let's just say I haven't been able to eat tuna since. It's just overpriced for what it is. Stick to the soups and salads and it's usually good!

Cat ..

Yelp
Can't say I love this place as much as I did for decades in its old location. The new(er) location is smaller and a lot louder. However it still has a great bar, giant chinese chicken and amy's grapefruit salad and that fantastic sourdough bread. If you want upscale american food that isn't overly cutting edge at a reasonable price point, this is a good spot. Parking is not easy and they overcharge for the valet, so be prepared to arrive a little early and park at the lot about a block and a half away West on Dickens.

Andrea G.

Yelp
I hadn't been to this restaurant in many years. Definitely wasn't aware they had moved. Easy access, very pleasant service and the food was very good! A great spot to meet for lunch!

Yelp
Made reservations for Saturday night for a party of 9. We were immediately seated. The entire staff were wonderful including our waitress Sam and Martin, who assisted Sam. We started off with some appetizers- chicken wings and calamari. These items were my favorite. The chicken was flavorful, well seasoned and extremely juicy. The calamari was also delicious. Lightly fried and well seasoned. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was not too great. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. It was not only over cooked but actually burned to the point where I could not even break off a piece of chicken with my teeth. Although the staff was nice enough to remake it, by the time I got the replacement chicken, my entire party had finished their dinner. We also ordered a steak with mashed potatoes. We ordered it well done. It arrived to our table rare. When we showed it to our waitress, she immediately apologized and took the steak back to have it recooked. Unbeknownst to us, they took the very steak we had already cut open and simply put it back in the oven or on the stove. When we got it back, it was so dry - practically inedible. They should have refired a new steak. The cheese pizza was quite bland and the ratio of crust to cheese (and sauce if there even was any) was off. The burger was okay. Not bad but not great. I'm not sure what happened on this evening. We started off so well with the appetizers and it just went downhill from there. I really appreciate the wonderful service and staff, but was very disappointed with the food. Maybe it could have been good but seems like the food was made in a haste and without care.

Lori F.

Yelp
Ever since the new (and frankly rude) owner took over, this place has gone downhill fast. My family and I have been loyal customers for over 10 years, but sadly, it's not the same anymore. I've heard similar complaints from many friends and neighbors. The food quality has declined, the service is terrible, the noise level is overwhelming, and the prices have skyrocketed. Unfortunately, we'll be crossing this one off our list of local restaurants.

Yelp
The food is always delicious. My favorites are the Chinese chicken salad. They have a wide variety on their menu. Something for everyone. The bread is always warm and fresh. They always get their meals out promptly and the food is consistently good.

Logan W.

Yelp
Amazing experience! Llenelle was great. They take great care of my parents. I get why they love this place!
google avatar

Amie L.

Yelp
What a place! Stanley knows how to do it up! Every time we eat here / get a to-go order... this place is on point! This is probably the 5th time having Stanley's and I must say, they are consistent! Consistency is tough when it comes to restaurants... and it's understandable because different chefs, different days... etc but I truly feel like Stanley's is always striving to make the experience even better. We had the roast chicken which is my favorite, the way it's cooked is perfect! The flavor / seasoning is just right! The mashed potatoes have a balanced amount of gravy... not an overflowing volcano situation. My fiancé had the pasta and the grilled artichoke. Great sizes. Affordable pricing. A fabulous experience all around. I would go again and again!!!
google avatar

Mac S.

Yelp
Excellent service, and fun ambiance. Met up with some friends there for dinner and we enjoyed it. The food was good (I had a seared tuna), as I noticed a lot of people were getting take out from the location as well. Tip: Parking is sort of hard in that area (weekend evening). I had to park a block or so down the road.

Carina O.

Yelp
Great food, great service, clean and joyful atmosphere! The salads are delish. We also got a few desserts which were all good: Blueberry cobbler Mud pie Choc chip cookie pie Parking in that neighborhood can be tricky but they do have valet so not a problem.

Susan K.

Yelp
Food and service is great. Don't forget to look for Dario the valet! He is very kind and does a super job!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service good food!! Had shrimp tacos they were AMAZING!! Will be coming back for sure!!

Yelp
What a great experience and I would have never come here if a friend of mine didn't have me meet her for the Chinese Chicken Salad! Ironically unbeknownst to both of us we were having a mutual craving for this salad and we were both pleasantly surprised at how fresh the food was, a ton of chicken, with fresh almonds. The salad dressing is everything for the Chinese chicken salad and we ordered extra. There was so much I had to take the rest home. Great decor, it looked like an old diner before now it's a really hip environment with great art work on the walls. We were there for a while waiting for another person to come by and weren't rushed to get out. Very nice vibe. They have valet for $7 but I parked half a block away on residential.
google avatar

Sharleen S.

Yelp
So, I came here today during happy hour. Got the pesto chicken pasta, chips and guacamole, and my friend for the Margherita pizza. The guacamole and salsa had no flavor. My friend and I were confused but she saidbher pizza was great so it wasn't us. My pesto chicken pasta... I was so sad. It had NO flavor and the sauce was so saucy (which I'm usually okay with) but it was literally like water. I was so upset as I was looking forward to a delicious meal. In addition, there was small piece if chicken bone in there that I almost broke my tooth on... I dont know if it's a new or different chef but I was so upset.

Kristin D.

Yelp
Been a customer for decades. I am told there are newer policies in place as of two months ago when new owners took over - a policy that prevents one person from sitting at anything larger than a two top - even when resturant is dead. Hostess was rude in sharing this new implemented policy complete with eye roll. Refused to seat me but sat two customers at that same booth which makes no sense. The food is an average go to spot but when you calculate average food - staff attitide, below average service and rigid policy sadly this long time customer will be looking for a new place to dine. Too many negatives and too many other choices.

Juan Z.

Yelp
I've ordered the chop salad and the grilled artichoke several times now and they never disappoint. The food is great here and the service is always fast and friendly. This is a great spot to eat. It's always crowded in the evenings and has a nice ambiance.

Paul H.

Yelp
Very untoward people owning and running this formerly good business. They charge an extra four dollars for any salad to go. When called out on this they explained that the container costs four dollars extra. Absolute nonsense. Avoid.
google avatar

Lea Y.

Yelp
As anyone who lives in the Valley knows, Stanley's has been around a long while. I've often wondered if they are putting something in their food that makes you crave it. Like that delicious, garlicky salad dressing on their Caesar Salad, and that warm sourdough bread and butter. They've updated their menu items to keep it fresh but if you want to kick it old school in there, they always seem happy to give you a dish the way it was back in the day! Always friendly service, lots of nice booths to sit and chat with family and friends. It's a comfy ambience and the food is comforting too. For a casual bite in the Valley, Stanley's is STILL the place to be after all these years. LOVE. P.S. Treat yourself and order the Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie!

Rom M.

Yelp
Ordered uber eats tonight and had the most phenomenal meal! Their wings are probably the best in the US... so crispy with the perfect amount of sauce smothered and the most amazing dipping sauce! The wings should seriously be in a competition or voted "best of"!!! Also got the ribs which fall off the bone... so tender and tasty! Tonight we got it with their skinny fries and even with delivery they came hot and crispy. Their grilled artichoke and sauce is a huge winner too! Also very much appreciate that they always include the most delicious warm sourdough bread. This is a reliable dinner spot always.

Yelp
Very good. Food and service was excellent. Parking is a little bit challenging, especially for handicap parking, but street parking is available.

Pamela S.

Yelp
Great selection of salads, sandwiches and entrees. We have been going for 20 years, starting with their former location on Ventura Blvd. They never disappoint!

Audrey M.

Yelp
I went with my boyfriend and one of his friends last Saturday and the overall experience was mediocre. Food was underwhelming when considering the price. I ordered a chicken salad - to balance out my diet from the week - and it was $20... a little overpriced for just some lettuce, chicken, and avocado as the main ingredients (and no dressing)...but I digress... The server we had also had a bit of an attitude. I tried to consider the fact that maybe she just had an off day, but some things she said came off a bit rude. Lastly, when we got the bill there was an automatic gratuity of 20% on our bill. We were not told they would do this and it was only a party of 3!! The vibe of the restaurant was nice, but I don't think I will come back.
