Having worked in South Philly for many years, I have been by Steak 'Em Up countless times. However, it wasn't until more recently that I have eaten from there. The story all revolves around another place called Florida Style Pizza. A legendary spot spoken of in whispers still today known for their inside-outs, or what people from outside the area would call panzerottis. Until they shut down, Florida Style made the absolute best inside-outs around, and apparently they still do, because this is why I started going to Steak 'Em Up when I am in the area. Most recently was during a game day at a friend's house who lives less than a block away and we all decided to order one to enjoy.
While I cannot vouch for the majority of food from this place, the inside-outs are still great, but they lack a certain something that I cannot put my finger on. But they are still delicious. Fried, doughy pockets of delicious sauce and cheese, filled with any number of toppings that one might want. There's just something special about the dough, and Steak Em Up is keeping them alive; something I respect and will support. Everything else I've had here from fries to sandwiches has been passable, but nothing that I would be wowed by. I feel like if I lived right on the block, I would order here consistently, and likely about once a week or every two weeks just because of the wide selection, quality, and immense convenience and speed of cooking.
Be wary that when you do come here, this is a typical South Philly corner pizza/short order place, and it comes with that signature attitude that is attached to so many of these spots. It can be a good thing or a bad thing if you don't know what you want or aren't prepared for something like that. If you're a regular or live nearby, you'll never find a nicer group of people who will cater to your needs and eventually will likely come to know you and your order like family. I highly recommend if you are nearby, to order a few Florida styles and give Steak Em Up a try. You can get some good food, and partially relive a secret defunct Philly gem that only REAL neighborhood kids would have known about from back in the day.
