16 Restaurants Worth a Drive Out of New Orleans

"Friday’s lunch special at Suire’s Grocery & Restaurant in rural Kaplan, Louisiana is always the same: an irresistible stew of local turtle meat simmered for hours in a dark reddish-brown gravy, shiny with the gleam of a well-polished family heirloom. The family-owned spot in Vermillion Parish is famous for plate lunch and staples, long a must-stop for families heading west along the coast to stock coolers with food for their hunting and fishing camps. The Suirre’s are geniuses at rustic, Cajun cooking, smothering, simmering, frying, and baking hearty platters guaranteed to satisfy. If you have a cooler, pick up frozen versions of many of the kitchen’s specialties." - Beth D'Addono

Google
I tried the famous Turtle Sauce Picante and the Shrimp Stew. Both were very tasty and delicious. My only complaint would be that I wish there were more pieces of turtle in the plate lunch. We went on Good Friday and it was very busy and a bit hectic. The poor ladies working there were doing the best they could, but were definitely overwhelmed. This place is a must try!

Google
Out of this world fried catfish and potato salad. The Turtle Sauce Piquante was excellent. Similar to a braised beef stew, tangy and tomato forward. Would absolutely recommend.

We saw this place on an Anthony Bourdain episode and knew we had to try it. We drove 3hours from New Orleans just to try it and it was our favorite dining experience of our whole trip. The ladies working were really friendly and made us feel comfortable and right at home. We ate the crawfish ettoufette, oyster po’boy, and the best pecan pie we’d ever had. I wish I had 5 stomachs so I could’ve tried everything on the menu!!

Google
You won't leave this place, Hungary. The food was delicious, and the portions were. V llĺgenerous. If you're looking for fancy, don't go. If you're looking for good food, this is the place. We will be back.

Google
This is an old time grocery and restaurant type place on the outskirts of kaplan Louisiana. I believe they have been there since 1976. The people there were very friendly. Walking in here feels like stepping back in time. They have a vast array of options to eat. Their specialty is turtle sauce piquant. I tried this dish and it was very very good. It comes with a fried catfish fillet a roll and a piece of lemon cake. We also had the seafood platter and the daily special plate lunch which was spaghetti that day and we got a piece of pecan pie which they sell by the slice or by the entire pie. They also make excellent triple Decker BLT sandwiches. Everything was excellent. I plan to go back and get some of their items they have in the freezer section such as brisket and corn soup and shrimp stew among other things

Google
A totally awesome and delicious treat! Can't wait to bite into my fig tart. The nicest, kindest people you'll ever meet. This is now my favorite place!❤️

Google
This place was on my bucket list. We made it a priority to visit and eat here. And it will always be a memorable occasion. We ordered shrimp po'boys, fish sandwiches and a few sides. It was a pleasure to meet the friendly owner and listening to her describe the items on the menu. Great experience!

Google
Not much to say about the food here except that its nothing particularly special. What there is to say is that I spent the same hour and half (that is not a typo) as everyone else waiting to order and receive this very mediocre food. I had high hopes but definitely not worth repeating.

Yelp
SUIRE'S is an icon of quality & taste. In fact, it has grown to ''institution'' status for those living in or visiting the rural Vermilion Parish prairies. My Family lived in South Crowley, with a second home at Intracoastal City, so I ''discovered'' this wonderful place early. The Grocery has a ''deli'' which serves wonderful country style plate lunches; to-go or eat-in. Sandwiches are also made to-order. The distances folks travel for lunch plates testify to the unique quality & taste. Worth a long side-trip; don't miss Suire's ! Plenty parking, little shade. Various drinks & groceries are sold. If in doubt, call ahead; see: https://suires.yolasite.com/. Rick

Yelp
The food is authentic Cajun. The atmosphere is wonderful. Sweet people working there. Love places like this. The meal was delicious. The tart we took home and warmed up was out of this world.

Yelp
Home cooked Louisiana Cajun food. Lots to choose from on the menu. They also have the same items in the freezer so you can take it home and cook it when you're ready to eat. Lots of fresh pies and hot cookies made throughout the day.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!!! Crawfish pistolette's and the shrimp etouffee with gumbo, incredible. Wonderful assortment of sweets and desserts. Do your self a favor and just get a whole pecan pie to go. I regretted only getting just a slice after I took the first bite. They also have a lot of menu items frozen in meal size portions with a side of rice! Perfect for a bachelor traveling in an rv like myself. Take the time to stroll around and look at the photos and articles on the walls. I went thru six states in the south looking for a home cooked Cajun/creole experience, my quest ended here.

Yelp
Fantastic food at great prices. everything is served on styrofoam plates and bowls which may put off some people but if that changes your mind about eating here, that's your loss. My wife and I shared the seafood platter at 19 dollars and that included a catfish fillets, breaded oysters, breaded shrimp, crab patty, oyster patty, a bowl of shrimp gumbo, shrimp etouflee, choice of potato salad or green salad, a roll, a piece of cake and french fries, all cooked to perfection. Many items on the menu such as gumbos and pastilles are available frozen to take home.

Yelp
Excellent. I would go back. Great Cajun food. I drove from SAN DIEGO just to eat there.

Yelp
Best turtle soup I've ever had! The ladies are great! The crab w mashed potatoes were also terrific.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this little slice of Cajun country! Miss Joan and Miss Lisa are simply the sweetest ladies who are continuing on their family legacy. Anything you order here will be hot and delicious. The atmosphere here is welcoming and everyone just sits with anyone to eat. Yummy plate lunches that will fill you to the brim and fresh baked goods that will satisfy any sweet tooth. In a hurry call ahead and they have it fresh made and waiting for ya. Need a drink or just something to snack on they have that too!

Yelp
I'm from Kaplan and grew up always knowing the owners of the little catering place next to Suires. Passed by this little Cajun heaven all my life. I have lived in Baton Rouge, Missouri, and I'm back home at the moment from Sacramento my recent home. Today was the day I stopped in after browsing on Yelp for food. I had the shrimp Po Boy and some fried Gator. I always have loved Gator blackened or fried this was the best fried Gator I ever had any where in Louisiana. The shrimp Po Boy was yum nice big shrimps I will be back to see if they turtle sauce piquante is better than my paw paw!!Good food so glad to be a little bayou Cajun girl when I'm eating my native foods.

Yelp
This place is HANDS DOWN the best food in Louisiana. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park and our camp host, Curtis, told us to check this place out. It's a beautiful little country store with a small restaurant inside. We ordered a variety of items and shared. Everything was amazing. The crayfish Etoufee was great! Joan waited on us with a gusto of enthusiasm. She offered great conversation and History about her families little hidden gem. The Pecan Pie was to die for TRULY! We ended up taking a whole pie to go (even though we are dieting) Joan told us they usually sell around 300-350 pecan pies the month of November but a newspaper article that was published about their place pushed sales up over 700 the month of November. We could have sat there all night and talked with Joan and the other customers but we will make it back to Suire's again and again. (Or they do mail order their Pecan Pies) Sisters from Michigan with 7 dogs

Yelp
Checked out the ratings before we went. The restaurant lives up to their high rating. I got the shrimp etoufee dinner - came with a heavenly piece of fried fish, a dinner roll, and a bonus piece of chocolate cake. My husband got the fried shrimp dinner. It too came with the bonus chocolate cake. We each had the gumbo starter. Another great bowl of gumbo. The restaurant has homemade baked goods. We tried the fig cake, the fig tart, and the pecan pie. They were wonderful. I will say I would describe the tart as a filled cookie, but it is the best filled cookie I have EVER had.

Yelp
Awesome, friendly place! Great desserts.. had the fig cake and pecan pie.... stopped twice in one weekend...pistolettes were fantastic... on our favorite list for sure!!

Yelp
I've heard of Suire's many years and how people come from all around. The owners are NOT friendly. Not at all. The employees look beaten down by ownership. The food was not good. Time is not taken with the food. It is all very quick dishes that shouldn't be. I've tried the burgers they are ok. Crawfish ettoufe it has a VERY vinegar taste. Spaghetti ver quick thrown together. Dessert OLD not made fresh daily sold me a brownie I could break on cement. Why??!!

Yelp
Best place in Vermilion parish if you want home cooking the way mawmaw does it! Literally everything on the menu is delicious from their burgers to plate lunches! Don't forget to grab a desert! The fig tarts and pecan pies are the best

Yelp
I've been to Suire's grocery two times. Both were amazing. Between the authentic Cajun cooking and wonderful staff this place deserves 10 stars! I was amazed when they told me the didn't know who Anthony Bourdain was! Ha, no way. They quickly learned. This should be your first destination in Cajun country. 100% good food all da time. Great! Would go again and again and again till my wheels fall off

Yelp
2016 update: Suire's remains king of Acadiana flavor. Previously I mentioned that this place was worth a dedicated trip to Louisiana. I did just that, simply for the pecan pie, and I am already thinking of my next visit (from california). The turtle sauce picante is superb. Wow. I've visited many, many places throughout the region and this place is something special. Cajun, bayou, seafood, shrimp, crawfish, gumbo, etouffee, authentic. Get lost in the latest edition of Bonnes Nouvelles with a forkful of Louisiana long grain and you will be suspended in a timeless heaven. 2013, Fall: Some of the best gumbo I have ever had. I dream about their homemade pecan pie. Worth a dedicated a trip to Louisiana simply to experience the local flavors and hospitality of this unique and original dining spot.

Yelp
This place is awesome, it is out of the way but if you are in the area it is worth a stop. They also have frozen pre-cooked meals so you can take some Suire's home with you. We love the turtle sauce piquante. They have lots of homemade desserts as well. You will not leave hungry!

Yelp
One of my best lunches ever. My wife and young son decided to try Suire's since we were out in the area, and I had read good things about it. I decided to try the turtle sauce piquant and a bbq burger. I have had sauce piquant before, but this was the best I've ever had -- large pieces of fresh turtle meat in a spicy red sauce with rice, served with a tasty piece of fried catfish, dinner roll, potato salad, and a small piece of cherry chip cake. I loved every bite. The burger was obviously a pre-made frozen patty, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was pretty basic, just the patty on a bun, topped with a "Jack Miller"/"Pig Stand" style bbq sauce. In case you don't know what that is, it's a unique onion-based BBQ sauce that is popular throughout Acadiana. For dessert they had numerous homemade offerings -- varieties of cakes, pies, and tarts. I had been advised to try the heavenly hash (a thick nutty brownie topped with melted marshmallow and a thin layer of chocolate frosting), so I got 2 slabs of it. I also tried the peanut butter balls, fig cake, and cream cheese bars. All were good, but the fig cake stole the show -- it was excellent. I'd also like to point out that the women who worked there were extremely friendly and very enthusiastic and proud of all the accolades that Suire's has received. This place is definitely off the beaten path, but if you're in the area (or even if you're not), I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Had turtle sauce piquant the other day. Holy moly was it ca c'est bon! You must go and have their lunch specials. You will never regret trying new things if you have never tried Cajun food. By the way, the pecan pie is some of the best in the south. Eat up Acadia!

Yelp
The best Cajun food in the area, hands down! Everything is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection! Joan and her staff are all so super polite and helpful! I went in with my child and ordered several plate lunches, Joan actually put what she was doing on hold to help me carry them out of the store to ensure nothing spilled while I was carrying my son. She didn't have to, but she insisted! I always recommend Suires to anyone in the area asking for Cajun food!

Yelp
Suire's Grocery 13923 La Highway 35 Kaplan, la 70548-6637 Phone: (337) 643-8911 We went to a grocery store called Suires for breakfast. their motto is "If you want country cooking, come to the country." And this WAS the country. There was a man there in his overalls with no shirt under it and with his fat white belly hanging out all hill billy style. If this is not the country, then I don't know what is. Totally random, but it was an unexpected surprise since the food was so good, cheap, fast and the service friendly. We walked in and it looked like something out of a movie - fishing tackle side by side with the Sunny D and frozen crawfish. We ordered enough food for an army. We got piroettes - fried bread stuffed with shrimp and crawfish, seafood fettucine, spaghetti, fried alligator, potato salad, yellow cake, gumbo, beef and corn stew, and pecan pie which I ate first before all the food. The alligator tasted like fried chicken for the most part except for I got one piece that tasted like swamp water. That was a little gross it was like rotten seafood. Gary, Binh's bro in law, a LA native said that happens when they don't clean the alligator correctly. Great, I just ate swamp ass alligator and I'll probably get the runs now. The piroettes were super fried greasy goodness. The spaghetti was meety. The fettucini was extra cheesy like mac n cheese. The beef stew and gumbo was a big hit with the boys. The potato salad was really eggy just the way I like it. The yellow cake was moist and fresh. But my absolute favorite was the pecan pie. It wasn't too syrupy and it was chocked full of pecans. Homemade pie is the best. You have to try this pie!

Yelp
Best Cajun food in town are in the country.no matter what you are hungry for.And if you want to do a party the do catering also

Larry L.

Yelp
Country business at its finest. I had the ribs, jambalaya, corn and okra for lunch. Generous servings, large selection of food and sandwiches. Some of the best Chicken Salad sandwiches around. It is a country store & restaurant. Nothing fancy but the finger licking food!!
google avatar

Jeremiah F.

Yelp
Had no idea where to go... Honestly very nervous as I am used to bright lights and too many options. However, was beyond pleased to run into this little Cajun gem. Kudos to you Suire's!

William W.

Yelp
This place is way out in the sticks, but it's well worth the drive. Food is always fresh and tasty. I usually grab a burger or fried shrimp. The little one tears up the spaghetti. Just a little country store with phenomenon food. Good thing is that they have pre made food in frozen containers so you can avoid the long drive and just serve up some tastiness at the house. Fabulous turtle dish also.

Yelp
Delicious meal in a very out-of-the-way location. I stopped in on my way back to Lafayette from a birding excursion at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area, having seen a mention of Suire's on the Vermilion Parish website. Had a very delicious plate lunch (well, dinner really) of fresh sausage with gravy over rice, plus black-eyed peas, cole slaw, a roll and a piece of cake. I also bought a piece of pecan pie to take home, but the dinner was so filling I haven't gotten to it yet! This was a great experience, and the only downside of my visit was that I was traveling solo and could only taste one kind of food...I would have loved to try about eight other things on their menu. I really wanted to get a few pistolets (bread rolls filled with things like shrimp, etc.) but couldn't possibly make room. Super friendly owner, and of course, a whole grocery store full of other local/regional specialties to take home, including frozen homemade items like etoufee, piquante, gumbo, etc. Highly recommended for both food and down-home atmosphere.
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
This is a classic small town Cajun grocery/lunch spot. It is on the far outskirts of the larger city of Lafayette, but well worth the drive. This is place is clearly an integral part of the the nearby towns and hunters/fishermen who spend a lot of time on the coast. If you want to experience an authentic plate lunch and and dessert, this is it. The seafood gumbo is some of the best I've ever eaten, and there are plenty of other options like crawfish etoufee or po-boys. You can get all kinds of sweets, like the popular pecan pie and fig cake. Hands down, 'slap ya mama' good.
google avatar

Yelp
If you really want local flavor, there is no better place than here! It looks like a somewhat weathered corner grocery but when you walk in you realize it is so much more. I grew up very close by but haven't lived in the area since 1976 (the year this business was founded...) so the accents and cooking smells as I walked in transport me back to a much simpler time in my life. There are about 7 tables capable of seating various sized groups, but though busy you shouldn't have to worry about waiting. The menu is pretty varied and extensive; credit cards accepted. The prices are VERY reasonable. If you have an aversion to styrofoam bowls. & plates , then leave. That is the ONLY thing to know about here! I had the seafood platter ($18.95). It came with a very thick bowl of shrimp gumbo with rice & potato salad on the side . Full of flavor! The rest of the dish was fantastic, especially the shrimp & crawfish cakes! To be honest, nothing we had was even close to mediocre as the worst measure of the food. It was just all something to be savored as a great meal! The rest of our group also found everything we ordered was far better than any high end restaurant you would find in a bigger urban area! If you are ever near the Lafayette or Abbeville,LA area, take the short 30 minute ride to this place and dive in.

Yelp
Just a little shack of a restaurant/convenience store. If you didn't know what to look for, you would drive right by. That would be a HUGE mistake though...This place puts out some great food! Their Turtle Sauce Piquante is quite literally life changing! Their gumbo is nice and traditional. The steak tips, rice, and gravy is very tasty! They've got some good fried seafood on the menu as well. Definitely make this a stop on your South Louisiana food adventure!

Cynthia E.

Yelp
Worth the side trip!! Stopped here going from NOLA to Houston. The sisters were incredibly sweet and the food is awesome!! Do not miss the Turtle Sauce Picante and the fried catfish that came with it was by far the best I HAVE EVER eaten! Can't wait to go back!!

Aubie O.

Yelp
My first visit was today. The food here was fantastic, the people were friendly, and the atmosphere is full of charm. I had the crawfish etouffee which I found to be very good. The meal came with a cup of gumbo, a piece of fried fish, and potato salad. All the sides were tasty. The potato salad had a unique consistency, almost like a mix between traditional potato and egg salads. It was very, very good. If I lived in the area I would eat here all the time. Highly recommend!

Rj G.

Yelp
Some of the best Cajun foods here. Everything you eat here is good!! Home cooked meals!!

James D.

Yelp
Great Cajun food with plenty of local flavor. Great crawfish and shrimp étouffée. Try the pisstolettes (sp?)

Alicia L.

Yelp
My husband goes here every morning after his hunts and his family frequently goes here for meals. I love just about everything they have. I am not 100% familiar with all of the foods from the area, but when I do eat something that Suire's also cooks, it is either just a good, if not better. Sadly, no one beats my husband's grandmother's cooking! Love this place and would recommend it to anyone who asks!
