I'm torn between if to rate SumoMaya 3 or 4 stars, closer to 3.5 stars but not quite 4. First, I will mention that getting a reservation at a "regular" table is difficult; I booked quite far in advance since this was our anniversary brunch, and the only option was a high top. That worked out fine for us though (and maybe it's the only option if you a 2 person party?). Second is parking; the parking lot is pretty small so finding is a spot will take work. We were lucky to be able to pull into a spot when someone else left, but I'd say to be prepared to utilize the valet option. We arrived a few minutes prior to our reservation time and were seated immediately.
Our server came by shortly after and she did a great job throughout our entire time we were there. She mentioned that we had 2 hours available, we definitely didn't dine that long but you can stay that long.
We ordered our entrees first - the steak and eggs & chicken enchiladas. Then we ended up ordering all of the tapas options (other than the bacon and eggs). My enchiladas entree was delicious, I was quite pleased with the flavors and the pomegranate seeds on top was a nice touch! My husband thought the steak and eggs could've been better; the whole dish tasted very oily (not sure if they cook the eggs in oil instead of butter), the steak was tough, and the rice was lacking flavor. Definitely a miss there.
From the tapas, we thought the best one was the papas bravas ... super crispy potatoes, seasoned well, and a nice level of spice with jalapeños! Also good were the egg roll (although the sauce on top was a bit too sweet, would've been better with it on the side for dipping), rangoons (pretty basic but well executed), the pancake street tacos (the description sounded a bit odd but everything worked well together), and guacamole (also basic but tasted good). The edamame hummus was a bit weird and the sushi wasn't too great either. Just ok were the calabacitas (the sauce was a bit too ginger-y), mango yuzu yogurt, oatmeal brûlée (way too sweet for our taste), churros, and liquid cheesecake.
Everything was presented beautifully, it's quite obvious that even though they get busy, they definitely are attention to detail oriented before dishes come out. We were satisfied after the meal, even though we didn't particularly love any of the dishes. The reason for 3 stars and not 4 is because I would recommend this restaurant to others for this experience. It's fun, different, and you get to enjoy a lot of different things. For us, however, I'm not sure that we'll be coming back, at least not with the current brunch menu. If they had all new dishes, I would because again, it was nice getting to have a bunch of different items.
