Best Sushi Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Leo Nakano (son of longtime sushi scion Hirofumi Nakano) is the talent behind this intimate sushi bar, offering classic nigiri and familiar sushi rolls as well as flown-in-fresh Japanese seafood, found on the chalkboard of daily specials. Here, customers might find aoyagi (surf clam, served live), kinmedai (golden eye snapper), or Hokkaido scallops. Don’t miss raijin — a crunchy, deep-fried rice patty topped with spicy tuna, avocado, jalapeño, and garlic chips — and consider Nakano’s off-the-cuff omakase." - Nikki Buchanan

Leo Nakano’s tiny Ahwatukee counter channels Edo‑style restraint: excellent rice, minimalist toppings, and periodic fresh wasabi. Named to Phoenix New Times’ Top 100, it’s a locals’ pick for refined nigiri at fair prices.

So I normally go to another place here in Awatukee for sushi, which is very good decided to try someplace new and this place blew it away. The artistic presentation of the sushi the Customer Service, the smiling faces that very intimate ambience. Both my daughter and I loved it. Will definitely be coming back here versus the other place.

Popped in here by chance - delicious sushi, friendly staff, modern and yet welcoming interior! I was greeted warmly and when I asked, was recommended several types of nigiri! The fish was fresh and the ingredients full of flavor, and I loved the unique flavor combinations the owner has come up with! I came toward the end of lunch, and was the only one there.

the food was delicious and so well-prepared. My only feedback was the bathroom could use more cleaning!

Amazing fresh fish, amazing sushi rice. Carries a lot of special things not commonly found in Arizona, such as fresh REAL Japanese wasabi root and pickled wasabi root (though they do charge extra for it). Most ingredients are actually sourced/imported from Japan. Sea bass and aged halibut both stood out, some of the highest quality eel I've ever had, and a sleeper hit was the fried eggplant nigiri, delicious! Sushi chefs were working hard! but were still thoughtful enough to engage costumers in conversation and answered any questions we had. Overall, great atmosphere, very cozy and personable.

Best sushi we have had in the Phoenix area. Highly recommended. No reservations accepted and it is very small like 6 tables and a sushi bar w some seats.

One of my favorite sushi spots, does not take reservations on weekends but if you go on weekdays there’s usually not a wait. This place is so underrated. The house made chili oil is so good they need to bottle it up and sell it! Their eggplant nigiri is vegetarian sushi I can get behind

I cannot recommend this place highly enough to anyone looking for an authentic and unforgettable sushi dining experience. Every aspect of my visit exceeded any expectation — the service was appropriately attentive and everybody was friendly, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and, the food itself... I have not stopped thinking about my food. I can’t wait to come back.
