Best Sushi Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Some people are purists about sushi, but for those willing to walk on the wild side, there’s the Mexican sushi at Sushi Sonora, made with ingredients that stray from the austerity of traditional Japanese variety. Here, customers eat rolls stuffed with beef, ham, chicken, bacon, yellow cheese, and cream cheese (lots and lots of cream cheese). For something completely wack, try the Hot Cheeto, stuffed with tempura shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, and cucumber, rolled in crushed Hot Cheetos and covered with nacho cheese. This one has multiple locations and a midnight close on the weekends." - Nikki Buchanan

I LOVE THIS PLACE , I always come here with my significant other . This is our go to whenever we don’t know what we want to eat or don’t want to worry about getting bad food or service somewhere else . They NEVER go wrong the food always comes out fresh they’re very attentive and sweet . All of their workers are great people and so is the owner . If you’ve never tried Mexican sushi this is THE SPOT , it’s affordable and they give you an amazing amount I usually cant finish a whole roll . I love it and I think if you’re looking for a place to try out Mexican sushi you should come here . You just have to experience it for yourself to understand what I mean . It’s flavorful and their sauces are also amazing (I’ve tried their fried rice and most of their sushi’s) . On weekends they also sometimes have live music or other small businesses outside which I think is also amazing it’s just a very welcoming happy place . Never had issues :))

I went on Tuesday, they have a promotion buy 2 rolls get a 3 free well I ordered 10 rolls and I was expecting 5 free rolls and made every excuse in the book to not give me the rolls. That is illegal advertising I did everything to give them a chance to make it up and they wouldn’t, plus they started to catch an attitude. The biggest thing was because it came in a platter they said it doesn’t qualified - keep in mind I was charged 10 rolls 5 on each platter - and the platter comes with no extra things only the roll and what it comes with so I don’t understand y they wouldn’t respect the promotion - that is like $100 in Rolls

Google
We always enjoy coming to this location. Personally think they are the best location out of the other Sushi Sonora both in quality and service. The meals are large and not too pricey and the staff is always super friendly. They also have a great promotion of 3 for 2 on Tuesdays which is awesome. We came with a large party of 6 and they were very attentive and our food was great. I especially like the Cielo, Mar, y Tierra. A great place to get Mexican sushi and a personal favorite.

Google
INCREDIBLE place! Great atmosphere, wonderful service, absolutely AMAZING food. The Vaquero roll was the winner of the night, but the Dinamita and fried California came close! Would give 10 stars if I could and can’t wait to go back!

Google
We had seen some Sonoran style sushi on tiktok and after discovering the line and prices were longer than mile we decided to go to this local place instead and so glad we did. Food was great and the prices allowed us to vary our selections more. We had some deep fried hot Cheetos crusted roll and another steak roll that were both very good. Hot Cheetos was our favorite!

Google

Google
No curb appeal but the food is good and the service is polite. Also it didn't take long for our orders to come out. The green beans with hot sauce and lime I hadn't ever had before and will not have again. Just not a good idea in my opinion. The sushi and beef lo mein were very good! I will definitely order them again.

Yelp
Great and friendly service from the staff. We also enjoy their Tuesday 3 for 2 special on their rolls. I've always enjoyed eating at this location or ordering to go. Their sauces are good and they have a variety of rolls and other dishes to choose from. They have some tables inside and a few outside as well. It's a no nonsense spot for a good meal. The rolls are large and great for sharing.

Yelp
This place is very great! Clean! Service is always top tier, the ladies are kind and very attentive! Food never disappoints, I try to get different kinds and they are always sooo bomb! The only down would be the edamames are not the same like they used to be years ago! Please make them like in 2018-2019 please! Still one of my favorite spots for sushi!

Yelp
I ordered some sushi on DoorDash.. never again from this spot they gave no teriyaki sauce and some weird watery soy sauce the rolls were full of cream cheese not good at all go to señor sushi that's where I shoulda gone

Yelp
Make sure you get the wings for appetizer! They're always perfectly sauced and crispy.

Yelp
Food was okay. Service was pretty bad. Wanted a margarita but was told the bartender didn't come in for another hour. So we waited. Drink prices weren't posted and we were charged $16 each. That's a little pricier for the dumpy ambience of the place. Not a very nice neighborhood either. Won't return. We thought we were going to a different place with the same type menu.

Yelp
We were feeling adventorous and decided to try "Mexican Sushi". When we entered, we were the only patrons there. There was a language barrier that made communications a bit difficult. The waitress was pleasant and I'm sure trying her best. We ordered 4 separate rolls, two of which were fried. One of our biggest complaints was that the two waitresses were in conversation with the chef and were incredibly loud. It was as if there was no awareness that customers were present and having problems hearing each other. The rolls were huge in size and looked good. The size was difficult in getting them eaten in one bit. There was 5 times more rice than other ingredients. Lacking in flavor, we finally gave up after eating only 1 1/2 rolls. We will not be returning.

Yelp
This is not how you make a salmoncito roll they basically scammed me didn't even bake my roll I say they stole from me because I paid for something I didn't get

Yelp
Saturday, January 16 3:45pm There are fish bones in the food. We ordered a salmon roll and found many fishbones in it When we found the first one we decided to let it go but the second got stuck on my palate so better to let you know this can be dangerous (pictures attached). If you are going to cook fish you need to learn how to handle it. Pro:

Yelp
This sushi is amazing. Every time I come into the restaurant I'm greeted by the friendly staff and most importantly a clean establishment. I recommend you try the "Flamed Salmon" and "El Rey". Both these rolls have exceptional flavors and just the perfect amount of rice. Whether I'm dinning in or ordering takeout Sushi Sonora is always my go to. 10/10 recommend

Yelp
food is always good , never disappoints! very great customer service & very fast trying to get everyone's food out , i can tell there food is made with love & will continue to come to this place !

Yelp
I really paid for a half ass order of Guamuchilito ? Cheap on the aguacate don't you think? Never buying from here again. Rather go further away and get mine from señor sushi.

Megan W.

Yelp
I love the Celio,Mar y Tierra sushi! The employees are really nice and the price is good!

Yelp
Was hesitant to try this out, but my other half insisted on it. He ordered a fried sushi with chicken, steak and shrimp in it and I had the teriyaki chicken dish. Mine was really tasty, but a little on the sweet side. The restaurant itself was nice. A little hole in the wall Hispanic place. They had the hobbit movie playing on the television, so that was fun to watch while we ate. We were greeted in Spanish when we walked in, but since I don't speak it, the waitress was happy to speak English for us. All in all, great little find. Next time I'll be a bit more adventurous and try some Mexican sushi.

Yelp
This Mexican sushi place is small. What we ordered seem to look a little plane compared to other Mexican sushi places we've been to, but the flavors were good. I'd like to try a couple more rolls off the menu.

Yelp
I was in Phoenix, AZ this past weekend visiting family and I've been wanting to try this place because friends and family rave about it all the time and I 10/10 recommend going to sushi Sonora. The rolls are a reasonable price and the service was spectacular. The roll I got was El Rey. Will go back for sure next time I'm in Phoenix.

Yelp
I was introduced by this place from my parents. And every since I tried there sushi it's been my #1 spot ever since. If you want some good Mexican style sushi THIS IS THE SPOT!!!

Yelp
We were looking for tacos but the place was still closed so we walked across the street to this place trusting in the name. I'm from Sonora and haven't found the legit taste Im looking for in mexican sushi here. I ordered the Mar y Tierra and asked if they had it available in Tempura the girl said yes they dip it in tempura then bread it, it was all breading. Then my son ordered the sonora roll, no carne asada it was just carne made on the skillet with no flavor. Portions are big but flavor not so much. The Tampico salad was dry and over chopped. My unsweet tea tasted like algae it may have been sitting there for a while. The bill for everything we ordered was considerably high compared to other Mexican sushi places, I can say I much rather wait until I go to Mexico.

Angel Y.

Yelp
Worst sushi experience ever. I always try new places and this place was not it. Ordered two Vegas rolls thinking they wouldn't mess that up but when the food was ready it had no flavor at all. It wasn't crispy. I didn't even finish the food and we spent about $35 which went to waste. Would never come back and do not recommend at all.

Ariel F.

Yelp
I'm ALWAYS satisfied with the yummieness that they prepare may God bless the hands that prepare this food

Yelp
Hubs and I decided to try a new sushi place today for lunch. We were VERY disappointed! We should have not even parked as we pulled into the parking lot. I am a handicapped person who walks with a walker. There is no 'sidewalk' ramp to go into the restaurant. You must step up to go in. Forget it if you're in a wheelchair! The place is definitely a dive place. However the tables were clean. Service was ok. The food? Oh gawd, where do I begin? I have NEVER ever eaten sushi with a plastic fork! No chop sticks were offered. No wasabi was offered either. 80% of the rolls offered had cream cheese in them and were $12.50 a roll. They put cream cheese in a California roll, and even called it a California Roll. I ordered mine without cream cheese. It would have been ok if it tasted good but it didn't. No avocado too. The other roll I ordered was a Crunchy Roll. It was a tempura shrimp roll that was deep fried! It was terrible! I ended up picking out the shrimp and just eating the shrimp. My hubster ordered the vegetarian roll which he said was tasteless. He also ordered the spicy edamame which he said was "just ok." The only thing that would have been a positive was their rolls have like 12 pieces in them but not a deal when the rolls don't taste good. This is not a true sushi place that I'm used to. Please be cognizant of what to expect when (or IF) you do go. Don't waste your time or money!! I had no give it one star because zero stars is not an option.

Yelp
Worst sushi I have ever eaten by far. I ordered i spicy tuna roll for 11.50 and got a half rice half fake crab roll. They were sooooo cheap with the tuna and it was only in half of the roll: fishy and disgusting. They gave me a scoop of dry fake crab with like no mayo?? Also included a cup of chipotle mayo and some unidentifiable bitter sour brown sauce. I really want my money back.

Carlos P.

Yelp
This is my own personal opinion. Not saying Mexican-sushi lovers are wrong, just that it's not my cup of tea. The Mexican flavors get severely dialed down by the mostly tasteless seaweed and sushi rice. The Asian flavors are too subtle to reveal themselves through the very strong sauces. The crab mush served with everything is tasty, but not enough to warrant the premium price reserved to medium - high quality sushi. At 11-14$ per roll, one could expect better than battered rice and a sprinkle of unapologetically bad carne asada. Clean place, great service.

Yelp
I found a hair in my food and i went back and one of the waiters or whatever they are laughed and said it was mine, like wow i didnt know my hair was light brown, i dyed my hair BLACK a few months ago

Brayan C.

Yelp
Very bad costumer service I had called them 20 min ahead, so I get there and they haven't even sent the order in so I had to wait 20 min again and than I had asked manager Arturo what's taking so long and he said (with and attitude) you can cancel your order if you would like to. So very bad costumer service

Yelp
This Place Is AMAZING ! I Only Come Here For My Sushi Because They Are The Best. So Far I Have Probably Tried About Half Of The Menu And I Have Yet To Be Disappointed. I Have No Idea How I Found This Place But I Am Glad That I Did. When I Found It I Was A Little Skeptical About Trying The Latino Sushi Rolls But Boyyyyyy! They Are Much Better Than The Traditional Sushi Rolls. I'm In Love. The Live Bands At Night Are Great. This Place Offers A Chill Vibe. I Spend About 2 Hours (sometimes more) When Ever I Come Just To Take A Load Off My Feet.

Anthony B.

Yelp
Me and my friends brought our own drinks into the restaurant due to health concerns and they denied our service and they made us eat and wait outside in the heat.

Ariza G.

Yelp
Decent service but the sushi taste like soap and burnt. Seems like no time or effort was put into the food.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
No, no, and no. Just don't. If you're looking for good sushi, go somewhere else. I get the whole Mexican sushi concept, but this was just bad. I will leave it at that. Take it for what you want. Feeling adventurous and want to see if this yelper is wrong? Be my guest. You'll be $40+ poorer and will curse yourself for not listening. Two stars are for the cleanliness, but honestly, good service and cleanliness should just come with any dining establishment.

Merritt E.

Yelp
Not a bad spot. Unassuming. Interesting take on Japanese/Mexican fusion. Great find for the area. Came here for lunch and enjoyed the dynamita roll

Joe E.

Yelp
it says curbside but woman who answers does not speak English, I had to lie and tell them I was sick in order for them to bring it to me outside, very annoying

Alejandro D.

Yelp
Food was nasty and really over priced no flavor I orders bone less chicken wings and they gave me cut up chicken tenders dipped in sauce the sushi rolls had no flavor very dry DONT GOO \\\
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Tried the sonora roll, it was the bomb!! :-),carne asada, avocado, cream cheese, rice, deep fried!!
google avatar

Cristian M.

Yelp
The bad reviews are odd, I've been coming here for 3 years and absolutely love the sonoran roll. Sometimes the waitress doesn't speak great English but food is very good.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
I don't know why this place has complaints. At first, I felt the prices were a bit steep so my party of three ordered only 3 rolls with intentions of going elsewhere. We all love cream cheese and almost every roll has cream cheese so that's a win in our book. Then the rolls came, they were HUGE, more than double an average roll at any other sushi place. The potano was so so so good, it's in my top 3 best rolls ever. Then, they don't put any sauces on the rolls they bring them in condiment bottles so you can do it yourself (another win!!). They bring eel sauce, a chipotle mayo, and an orangy-citrusy sauce and they were all excellent. Each roll also comes with a little (imitation) crab salad and julienne raw carrots topped with scallions. It's small, only about 8 tables but one of my new faves and they stay open till midnight. My only complaint is that the restrooms are outside.

Maria B.

Yelp
Ok not too much fun of mexican suhi. Love the Japanese sushi period..... dont like the fried sushi prices are way to expensive and not even good food. I won't be back because too expensive, no happy hour and don't like fried sushi sorry not a good place for me to eat

Patricia R.

Yelp
Pretty good. Definitely interesting, especially if you choose one of the rolls that's very different from what you'd get at a conventional sushi place--like the roll with carne asada. Service was good. The rolls are probably twice as big as the sort of roll you'd see at a conventional sushi place. We didn't expect that. A single roll was very filling, especially my battered-and-fried roll.

Frida P.

Yelp
I absolutly love this place. I LOVEEE everything on the menu
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
This place was absolutely horrible. Its overpriced, dry and does no justice to prove just how good sushi can be. To make matters worse I found a eyelash in the roll that I ordered. Definitely never coming back here again.

Zuleica M.

Yelp
First time trying sushi and really impressed with this place! Extremely addicting delicious food. Always craving it. Love the cielo mar y tierra sushi, chipotle sauce, and yakisoba. Never seen a staff work so well together it's kind of weird? BUT it definitely helps customers feel comfortable when ordering their food.

Rose G.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! They have regular sushi or if you wana kick it up a notch, they also have Mexican styled sushi. The place however, is fairly small. I would have given it 5 stars if they had happy hour or a better drink menu.

J In AZ G.

Yelp
Seriously GOOD Sushi! My family and I are lovers of sushi and happened to be in the area and did a search to find this place. As we pulled in, I actually pulled out because it does not look like much of a place at all but I was overruled and turned back in. I am SO glad I did. We left out of there over stuffed and totally satisfied for under $40 for all of us. Not sure why others have said they were over priced but I do not feel that way, especially when you are getting unique fusions of huge rolls. Absolutely loved it and we will definitely make the trip back over that way just to eat good fusion sushi!!!

Sophia A.

Yelp
Yes I'm Hispanic, greeted in Spanish and I replied in English, was treated rude from then on. I ordered and asked if he can make it spicy, he said it's a little spicy already. I asked well can you add spice. He said not really....lol seriously. You cant add a jalapeño? Some sriracha? Besides the crab mixture was not flavorful. Guy was rude, greeter (cashier) was not inviting. I recommend Senor Sushi if you want a culture mix with good food and kind service.

Moni D.

Yelp
I agree this Sushi is over priced. The Sushi isnt too bad except for the California roll which was dry..It tasted like the ones in the chinese buffet. .However Cielo Mar y Tierra was ok...I still think Senor Sushi serves the best Latin Sushi it isnt cheap either. ..But its worth paying
