"Open for: Lunch, dinnerPrice range: $$There’s Chinese food in Milwaukee and then there’s Sze Chuan. Word has spread quickly about the West Allis cult favorite, inspiring spice-seekers to make the trek away from the lake to enjoy cumin pork knuckles, dry pot intestine, sauteed spare ribs, pork kidney, or any of the many things from the massive menu doused in tongue-numbing, mind-altering Sichuan peppercorns. Know before you go: If the menu seems daunting, take cues from neighboring tables. The regulars know what’s good." - Todd Lazarski

After living in Asia and reading reviews, I was eager to try Sze Chuan. This is one of very few places that has crispy squid with chili. It was excellent. I ordered the spicy dumplings that were tender and flavorful with garlic, though the broth was very soy forward. I was first delighted to see & order and then absolutely horrified attempting to eat the dry chili chicken. The flavor is exactly as it should be, but there is no chicken, except TINY TINY fingernail size BITS that are so rubberized you'll pick them out of your teeth for weeks. I advised that the ratio of pepper to tiny chicken was an unpleasant error and was advised, "That's how we make it." (And although I didn't eat, but 3 bits was charged full price). I watched nearly every other table eating orange or sesame chicken and cannot for the life of me figure out why they would not use the same NORMAL size chicken pieces. (And when you see the photo, ya gotta ask why they waste so much pepper.) Each main dish comes with white rice, but I was served only one and had to request the second.

This is a 4.0-4.5 for me. The good is closer to authentic food than Americanized versions. The flavors might not fit what you typically expect from Midwest takeout… With that being said. Everything we had always good. The kung pao chicken was delightfully sweet and funky and slightly sour. The dry pot ribs were very well seasoned. The fried rice was good, but a little too moist for my preference. It was more of a hibachi moisture level rather than a traditional fried rice. The lo mein was decent, but not exceptional. The dumpling appetizers were quite good. The restaurant is a little on the small side and it smells of roasted garlic and sesame oil. The service was good.

Cramped Chinese restaurant that flips tables pretty quick. Service is ok, they don't really have time to wait on you hand and foot, or to clean empty dishes off of your table before they bring more. Food is ok. We had the General Tso chicken, brazed pork belly, vegetable lomein, black bean noodles, some tofu dish my wife wanted, and pot stickers. General Tso and pork belly were ok, I didn't like anything else. My wife liked everything a little bit, but nothing really special about it. We did both agree on the pot stickers - they were handmade but the dough was really thick and off-putting. Rating 3-stars for my wife because she said she'd go back. I, however, would not.

Without a doubt, the best Chinese restaurant in Milwaukee. Don't miss out on the regional specialties. I particularly enjoy the basil eggplant, and any of the Chow Fun noodle dishes. The Chow Fun noodles are cooked at a high heat which imparts a smoky and slightly charred flavor. The entrees have a good level of spice and all of the produce and meats are top quality. One of my favorite restaurants I've ever dined at. If any of you remember the old East Garden on Oakland, this is a worthy successor.

This is my top-rated Asian restaurant, and I can't count how many times I've been here. I've recommended it to many friends, family members, and even people from out of town. Whenever we host or eat with groups, we always come here. I've tried so many of their dishes, and I've never been disappointed. If you want authentic Asian food, not the Americanized version, this is the place to go. If you want my dish recommendations, here are a few favorites I always order: * 013 Beef Tendon in Chili Sauce (麻辣牛筋) * 049 Braised Pork Belly (糯香红烧肉) * Kung Pao Chicken (宮保雞) * Salted Fried Fish * Mapo Tofu or Tofu Stone Pot Most of their appetizers are also delicious, and they serve the food very quickly. If you can't eat spicy food, I recommend asking before you order. Some dishes are spicier than what you might find at most American Asian food restaurants. For example, the Mongolian Beef is spicier than usual.

It was our first time came to this restaurant, and their lady was so mean to our. We asked for some recommendations and they were so cold to us and said there’s nothing to recommend and left. We ordered the noodles that are very common, they made it taste weird. We wonder if we can get this refund or exchange to differently dashes. They were so rude to us and refused to do anything. As you can see the picture, it meant to be clear broth but they made it with soy sauce. This is a very obvious mistake. I can be sure as a native Chinese that this restaurant is not legit. Not recommend at all.

Zero doubt this is a 5 star establishment. Sure, maybe you could argue the atmosphere isn’t 5 stars, but honestly, who cares? The food is out of this world. Their menu has literally a couple hundred options so going there for the first time can be overwhelming, but our server was extremely helpful and we even chatted with the people sitting next to us and got some excellent suggestions. Beef wraps, Beef Chow Fun, sliced beef and chili pepper soup (very spicy), and green beans. If you like hot, definitely try the soup, but honestly everything was incredible. Been thinking about going back all weekend and we were just there on Friday. Definitely going back within the week.

First visit. Started with pan fried pork dumplings. Absolutely enormous with great dipping sauce. I ordered the lamb dry hot pot and it was fantastic. Huge portion with a definite kick. My companion was unsure what direction to go as she didn't want spicy. The salty pork ribs she picked seemed more of an appetizer than an entree. Limited cocktail menu but we enjoyed a sparkling sake split. Restaurant recommended by a well known Milwaukee chef and all my friends who tried it really raved about it also. Pretty busy on a Tuesday nite, popular.
