The Best Japanese Food in Portland, Oregon and Its Suburbs | Eater Portland

"The sister restaurant to downtown sushi spot Ichiban, Takahashi is stocked full of tchotchkes brought from Japan by original owner Seiji Takahashi. Special dinner sets allow diners to get a taste of varied items like pork katsu, tempura, and fried rice — or go the comfort-food route with classic Japanese dishes like curry rice or oyakodon." - Janey Wong

The Best Restaurants in East Portland | Eater Portland

"This cozy spot on Southeast Holgate serves standard Japanese fare including tempura and ramen but has become an East Portland mainstay for its sushi. Surrounded by tchotchkes brought from Japan by original owner Seiji Takahashi, sushi chefs cut and assemble ingredients for nigiri, vegetarian sushi, and signature rolls. The restaurant’s weekly specials often showcase the whims of the sushi chefs, with things like salmon-and-tuna maki wrapped in mango." - Rebecca Roland

Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s Lents Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Portland has no shortage of sushi varieties, from Mitate’s vegan sushi to cured Edomae-style, but the Takahashi Restaurant occupies a singular niche as a remarkably homey Japanese diner. The menu features plenty of sushi, freshly sourced and tastefully prepared, along with a wealth of noodle, meat, and tempura dishes — including one shrimp, avocado, and cream cheese concoction helpfully named Cholesterol. Few out-of-towners venture east of 205, so when dining in, expect to rub elbows with neighborhood regulars catching up with the friendly wait staff and chefs." - Nathan Williams

11 Incredible Izakayas in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Takahashi has been an outer Southeast Japanese stalwart since 1985. While the homey restaurant features a handsome wooden sushi bar, there’s also a sprawling menu that includes Japanese curry, yakitori, and a vast selection of tempura—softshell crab, oyster mushrooms, string beans, and rib-eye are just a few of the items waiting to be battered, deep-fried, and served with ponzu. The restaurant is doing takeout and delivery."

This is such a good deal. Especially on Wednesdays, when it's 20% off! Our server was great, she even split it by couple right off the bat. She was super experienced and everything was super fast. ❤️Uni ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - perfectly buttery tasting - not salty - good price Seared salmon ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - melts in your mouth Jo roll ⭐⭐⭐ - little plain but filing Tokyo roll ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - little salty, tastes fresh - ultra savory because of the spicy ponzu ❤️Unagi roll with avocado ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - favorite Unagi I've ever had in my life - not too sweet California dream ⭐⭐⭐✨ - really yummy crab - not for me though Spicy salmon ⭐⭐✨ - not for me - didn't love the mayo drowning it Salmon belly ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - good but not super flavorful - weird cut ❤️Unagi nigiri ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - really good taste - savory - no bones

This was my mom's favorite place when she was alive. She used to take me here as a kid and I would sit at the bar and watch the moving train around the room. 20 years later, the train is decommissioned and there is a new owner , but the place is still the same. Love coming here on birthdays and special occasions with the family 🖤

Google
Wonderful dishes, the fish is extremely good quality. I hadn't visited before but now it's my #1 sushi spot. Definitely a tad pricey but worth every single penny. I'm so glad I discovered this gem so close to my house. I'm slowly making my way through all the menu. Definitely just visit at least once, and try their seared salmon.

Google
Nice, izakaya style restaurant with tons of sushi options. The service was great and the food came out quickly. The flavors and quality of the sushi was on par for Portland. That is decent, but nothing extraordinary. This is still the place to go if you need a quick sushi fix

Have been going to this restaurant for years! In my opinion the BEST authentic Japanese food in Portland. Has been and probably will always be! Whether sushi, bento or combination meals! Service is fantastic! The sushi bar is a great spot for singles or sit in the back if you want a bit quieter area!

Overall, my family feels like this sushi place is the best quality for the value that we’ve had in Portland, Oregon. And I’ve lived here 18 years, eating at many of the sushi places in town. Their prices are lower than most any other sushi place around and the seafood is always fresh. They offer discounts daily on most of their popular nigiri and Maki rolls. We had excellent hamachi, salmon, California rolls, creamy scallops… on this recent visit. Their tempura is excellent and they have a huge selection of it. With tempura prices starting as low as two dollars for two pieces. So we always get a variety of tempura, nigiri and Maki sushi rolls. They also have ramen and good large bento meals. Service is always very friendly! We often just do take out but on our last visit we took our sons out for a special occasion meal and enjoyed the renovated section in the back area of the restaurant. Lots of space back there with nice lighting and Japanese style wood tables. Very cool! Highly recommended!!

Google
4/3/25 2 stars🌟🌟 I have been coming to the takahachie restaurant since 1973. This is a nice little restaurant with great atmosphere and excellent food. The sushi chefs are top notch. They also offer a percentage of your meal off depending on what day and time you come. I've always been very satisfied with my food and service anytime I've been there until today. The two small tables were full and the waitress asked me and my friend to sit at the bar telling us we would get faster service there anyway. It took her 20 minutes to take our order. It took another 20 minutes for her to bring us our salad. 15 minutes later we received the three rolls we ordered but no tempura. We were finished eating our sushi and I was looking for the waitress to cancel the tempura order when she came out with it. By this time we were ready to leave. It took 5 minutes to flag her down for a to-go container. She was irritated, and came back 5 minutes later, tossed it on the table in front of my purse, and disappeared again. It took another 5 minutes to get her attention so I could get a second to go container. She angrily pointed at the first one. Not only did I have sushi AND tempura to take home but there were two of us. They don't bring the check to your table anymore, you have to wait on yourself. They expect you to come up to the cash register to pay your bill. It's not like this Sushi is on a train in a mall restaurant. This is a fairly nice bring your family sit down restaurant where they charge relatively high prices for their food. They have six Sushi chefs, one taking to-go orders waitress, a busboy, and one waitress for the rest of the restaurant. So you can expect little to no customer service. However she still expects a big tip. My guests went up and paid the bill with my credit card as I have mobility issues. I noticed later the waitress added an 18% tip to the bill without my authorization. I tipped the sushi chefs while I was at the sushi bar. We spent an hour and a half at this restaurant for three sushi rolls and some tempura that did not even come until we were ready to leave. We had a rude waitress, that we never saw, that expected a tip, and we had to cash ourselves out. Not only that, we didnt even get the percentage off on our food. All in all this was not a pleasant experience. This was 5:00 PM on a Saturday. Why was this restaurant too cheap to have two waitresses so the patrons could have some decent service. The food was great when we got it. Too bad the experience was ruined by bad customer service.

Yelp
Takahashi has been around in SE Portland for many years, We finally came on a Wednesday evening to try it out and got seated right away. On Wednesdays, many different type of sushi are at a discounted price. We tried nigiris and handroll, and rolls. My personal favorite is the hamachi nigiri!! It will literally melt in your mouth. The sushi was fresh and flavorful and I love the presentation. the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and was huge! There was a bar seating area and multiple tables to sit at. I can't wait to come back next time to try different sushi rolls!

Yelp
This biz has apparently been around a long time! They've been open since 1985, I think. I've driven by many times and finally got the chance to stop in. There is a small parking lot out front, shared with the other business in this tiny strip mall which include a weed store and a bar so it's often busy. There's a gravel lot to the side for overflow. Inside Takahashi, there is much more seating than you expect, as they have a back area. As a solo diner, I was seated at the bar which was not ideal. I didn't have a great view of the chefs making the food. There was also a fan running behind me (to prevent the neighboring weed store's smell from infiltrating, somewhat unsuccessfully). Orders can be placed by sharpie on a laminated menu, which I love. Staff was friendly and kept an eye on my water. Portion sizes per price were generous - I got a lot of sushi! I don't know if it was the highest quality sushi I've had but it was tasty and filling. I'd come back, especially as it looks like they do some promos and specials at different hours on various nights of the week.

Yelp
Takahashi has been a family favorite of ours for the last decade. They have wonderful staff and service and their food selection makes it a great place to go eat with the whole family. The restaurant is small so it fills quick during busy hours so expect a wait if you're dropping in during prime dinner time. Also be patient, with a smaller restaurant the wait time for food during busy hours can take a little longer. They serve a great selection of Japanese dishes and sushi. Their Uni pricing is hard to beat, and can normally be sold out (highly recommend a weeknight). Most sushi menus can be repetitive and similar but their menu has some nice specialties. Cho Cho is a great option for those looking to mix things up. I'd also recommend the Firecracker Roll, Seared Salmon, and Salmon Belly. I also enjoy their combo teriyaki plates and don bowls.

Yelp
Takahashi is an underrated sushi spot!!! The menu offers a variety of traditional and modern sushi rolls, but the real standout is their tempura. It's simply out of this world! The batter is light and crispy, and the shrimp and vegetables are perfectly cooked, making each bite a heavenly experience. Don't be deceived by the front of the store; the interior is cozy and inviting, and the staff is friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is perfect for a casual lunch or dinner with friends or family. The prices are very reasonable, and the portion sizes are generous. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food, especially given the unassuming exterior of the establishment. If you're looking for an excellent sushi spot with top-notch tempura, don't miss out on this hidden gem. It's an absolute must-try for any sushi lover!

Yelp
I came on a Wednesday night, parking lot looked full, but got seated right away! They usually give 2 menus: one that seems like their main menu and one that has specials. Honestly, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the options, but any of the sushi I've tried has never disappointed. Portions are big and generous. Some sushi is up to 25% off! For this visit, we tried the fresh salmon nirigi, extreme unagi roll, volcano roll and firecracker roll. My partner and I are a big fan of the hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri and now the firecracker roll -- mostly because of the Cho Cho! We personally could have done without the extreme unagi and volcano. The big thing about parking is if you plan on parking in front of the restaurant, it's hard to get in and out with oncoming traffic because it's sort of narrow. There is a gravel lot on the opposite end for more space. I saw a review mentioning that the restaurant smelled like marijuana (since there is a store next door), but I can confirm that I could only smell tempura being fried! Lol: There is also a sign from that dispensary that on site use is not allowed. Probably from this incident.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the sushi. It was fresh and they did not shy away from giving big portions. The uni was so creamy and the salmon toro was so fresh. I would definitely come back again. The ambiance was adorable. All the decor was giving vibes as if you were actually in Japan and the server was so nice. She made sure we were getting enough water refills and making sure we got all our food out. The parking is quiet small and it's right off the main road but overall it was so worth it.

Yelp
I tried to attend Takahashi several years ago, but the overwhelming stench of marijuana smoke compelled us to leave immediately after being seated. Takahashi is in a strip mall and is located right next-door to a dispensary, and the common building HVAC seemed to be a very unfortunate conduit for cross-contamination. While I fully know that this is no fault of the restaurant, it didn't eliminate that actuality at the time, and actively deterred me from returning. Based on an absolutely glowing recommendation from a close friend whose opinion I highly respect, I decided to give it another try with a close friend who also loves sushi. On this trip, there was mercifully no marijuana stench. We were told it would be a 25-minute wait, and we were finally seated 90 minutes later. We were seated at the bar, which was frustrating since we'd have much rather had a table, especially after waiting 90 minutes. Service wasn't great. The couple who were in line in front of us, who were seated ten minutes before us, and who ordered before we were even seated, got their food AFTER we got ours. Since we were seated right next to each other at the bar, we thought that the waitress brought us their food, but she confirmed that it was our order, and asked why I asked. That seemed odd, but I told her that those seated next to us had ordered well before we did, and she said that wasn't the case. Very weird. This was on a Wednesday, which turned our to be their weekly "discount sushi" day. There are two different discount levels, depending on what you order. This makes for a low price of the quantity ordered. Aside from the long wait, weird service, and disappointingly getting seated at the smallish bar, how was the food? Nothing exceptional. The rolls are competent, and there were no issues, it just didn't stand out. There are some curious rolls on the menu, such as the "fried chicken and cream cheese" roll, but that doesn't seem appealing if one's looking for authentic sushi. There is a large tempura menu, which is nice, but none of our tempura seemed particularly expertly prepared. The mushrooms were undercooked in the middle, and the tempura on the salmon was not light and crisp, but was rather on the soggy side, suggesting that it may have sat for too long after it was fried and before it was served. Parking here is TERRIBLE! There are a few spaces up-front, and a few more in the back and on the side. The condition of the lot is awful, full of pot holes and very uneven. If you're in the neighborhood anyway, or happen to be shopping at the outstanding and huge garden center next-door, it may be worth stopping in, but I'd not recommend going out of your way to visit Takahashi.

Yelp
ETA-I forgot to mention that anyplace that lets you add a ribeye as a side order is a double gold star in our book haha - seriously this is our new favorite sushi restaurant- love the extra wide wood counter to eat at, they're very busy ( a lot of take out orders!!) but in house service is still good... have had some excellent dinners - daughter says it's the best hamachi she's ever had, as well as the salmon belly and uni! Overall fresh good sushi and some interesting delicious nigiri!

Yelp
I'm so glad there's a good sushi restaurant in this part of town. The servers are all so friendly and the food is great! I hope they bring the train back eventually :)

Yelp
Takahashi is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in Portland. Before every visit, I tell myself to not order everything, but obviously that never happens. The service is always amazing and I always feel very welcomed everytime I visit. They always have smiles on their face and are very friendly. The fish always tastes fresh, I've never had a problem with the quality. The three pictures include everything that is a must get at Takahashi. The best item that gets us coming back is the roll topped with avocado and fried imitation crab. When you go in, make sure to write "kari kari" in the special orders box. If you're feeling adventurous, I definitely recommend the snake eyes. It's the combination of salmon eggs, tobiko, and a quail egg. You get creamy, salty, and rich flavors all in one bite. My last order recommendation is salmon belly. It will melt in your mouth which will make you melt in your seat. I would recommend getting here early since I've never had to wait for a table when I come early. This place would get a 11/10 rating if I could give that many stars.

Yelp
We have never had a bad meal at the Takahashi. It's one of my go-to spots when I need comfort food. I love love their nabeyaki udon, hubs loves the ramen, we always get some sushi. Fish is fresh, tea is hot and I always leave feeling better.

Yelp
We decided to give Takahashi a go since it's conveniently close, and while it didn't entirely bowl us over, there were some positive aspects. Going for takeout, the prices felt a bit steep, but the servers were genuinely friendly. The rolls we tried were decent, with a slightly off rice-to-fish ratio. One redeeming feature was the nice ambiance, adding a pleasant touch to the experience. While it might not become our go-to spot, I can see the appeal for those who appreciate a friendly atmosphere.

Kelvin J.

Yelp
Delicious, hot food, authentic flavors, served by healthy happy staff The decor is amazing, the ambiance adds to the experience and authentic feel. Thanks for living up to your reviews, we'll be back for sure.

Jacqueline L.

Yelp
Unbelievably bad service. And terrible atmosphere. We were seated quickly but the person seating us just threw the menus on the table-didn't explain that we would only find beverages listed on one of the three she put down. Which the server impatiently explained. We've never been asked to circle what we want on the dinner menu so again the server was impatient. She flat refused to do anything until I took the pen and made circles. Then she asked twice to be sure I wanted steamed rice, irritatedly explaining that she didn't know because - you guessed it - I hadn't circled it. Then she came back to say they were out of the beer I ordered and shoved a menu in front of me. When I started looking at alternatives she walked away. Finally, the next time she hurried past I said that water would be fine. The family next to us never made any effort to quiet their children and just yelled over them so finally, after the server's rudeness and the cacophony next to us I asked for my food to go. After all, it was never very hot anyway. That's when I saw that they expected me to pay with Apple Pay. Which I don't do. And pay for the beer I never had. More ridiculous events around how to run my card and take off the charge for the beer later we were out of there and happy to escape. This was so disappointing and different from our previous visits. Not sure if we're going back if that's how it is now.

Yelp
Well now...on the strength of some comments on reddit, we tried to hit Takahashi a few weeks ago. Got there some 6:30, there was no parking in front or behind the restaurant. Given the neighborhood, we decided to try another time. And we're glad we did! Came in last night right after opening, plenty of open seats. Service was quick, our order was taken. I'm no sushi expert - I just like to eat fish and rice. We had a friend with us who lived in Japan and from the look of contentment on his face, I'm guessing we did ok. We ate and ate and ate - there were no bad dishes. Spent around $100 (including a flask of "premium" sake) between the three of us and we had no complaints.

Yelp
Been going here for 18 years! It's delicious! Just go and try. Certain nights there might be a wait list

Yelp
This restaurant is so truly awesome! I am embarrassed to say that we have lived nearby for years, exactly four minutes away. Whenever I would drive by I always thought that it looked interesting and I love their sign with the retro design and lights. I knew we had to go one day, and when we finally did, I had INSTANT regret for not going sooner. It's such high quality and well prepared sushi. The spot itself is so cozy and unique and I really felt at home there! I was so impressed and curious, I sent a message to them on Facebook to ask about the history of the restaurant and they sent it to me! Just love this place and can't wait to go back soon to try more. We are committed to going at least once a month for a date night.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Staff was great! Place looked small from the out side but looks could be deceiving! There's plenty of room to host a party or a wedding!

Yelp
Best sushi in Portland with affordable prices!! Wait times can be crazy long towards the end of their opening times. Wait staff are super efficient. Huge cuts of fish. Always tastes fresh, could eat here daily! The parking is horrible though, so keep in mind if you park against the bar that's next door you could be towed.

Nile A.

Yelp
We've visited this restaurant twice and got the same server. Both times, she wasn't very accommodating and was pretty rude about my son's allergies. When I dine out with my family, I always let the servers know about my son's allergies to nuts. His allergies are life-threatening, so we make sure to communicate this with the server so they could let the chef know. If a server tells us that they aren't comfortable or aren't sure, we take it as it is and my son knows he can't order anything since it would be too risky. We don't ever ask for any additional accommodation, other than just asking the chef which food is safe and which is not. We let the server know that our son has severe allergies to nuts, and both times she responded very rudely. The first time, I let her know to please check with the chef and she basically refused, claiming she "didn't think" there were nuts in our order. The second time we visited this place, we asked about the chicken teriyaki and she said, "well I don't think there's any nuts in that. Unless there's nuts in the sauce, which I don't know? I mean, I don't think so?" I asked her, so is there or not? She responded saying she wasn't sure but doesn't think so. Again, in a super rude way as if she was annoyed that we would even ask. It wouldn't hurt to check with the chef, but not checking and accidentally giving a customer with allergies food that they're allergic to could be life threatening. Needless to say, we won't be back. Go to Yami Sushi instead. Way better customer service and food.

Yelp
Food was immaculate. My favorite thing, which I've not seen before, is that you can pick your own mix of goodies to tempura as opposed to the typical mix of 3-4 standard veggies. They have a list of over 20 items, many under $2 for 2 pieces. The nigiri was high quality, very fresh, and bigger pieces than other places in town. Simple 6-piece rolls are very reasonably priced and more expensive, larger rolls are enough to split with 2 or 3 people. We'll definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Very high quality on the plate, fun environment, funky and interesting! Point off for a couple service snafus: had to ask for soy sauce and proper utensils, and food reached the table at an uneven pace. No big deal; just not 5-star. Would definitely eat here again! Recommended for high-quality sushi and gorgeous tempura.
google avatar

Alan D.

Yelp
The meal was not that great .The sushi rice fell apart when picking it up. I thought the rice is very important part for sushi. Ramen and other dishes did not taste like Japanese food, but Tempura was good. I liked the atmosphere and the server was good, but I don't think I will come back to eat here.
google avatar

Romain G.

Yelp
Takahashi is hands down one of the best sushi spots in the Portland metro area. The quality of the fish is excellent, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the waitstaff are always friendly. I can't believe I've been going here for over 10 years and waited until now to write a review!
google avatar

Meagan N.

Yelp
Cozy and inviting. The ambiance here is amazing. It's a little chaotic but it works and it was great to admire the decor. As for the food, not the best sushi I've had in my life and I'm not sure if it satisfied my sushi craving. The salmon nigiri was pretty solid. My boyfriend usually enjoys creamy scallop but did not really like it. It was cut up very finely so it was kind of hard tasting that scallop flavor. The seared salmon was not it. It was basically cooked all the way through and thus not too enjoyable. As for the rolls, one of them had too much rice for my liking. The other, the waitress recommended the monkey brains. Not listed on the menu but probably one of the better things I ate that night. It was a large fried roll with tuna, avocado and crab meat. They were pretty busy so service was slow but it's understandable.
google avatar

Alix P.

Yelp
I have heard good things about Takahashi and I would definitely confirm to that notion after eating here for the first time. I would like to mention that as soon as I entered the restaurant, there was a man who was also waiting for his food that said he has been coming to Takahashi for 20 years. He said that the food here is really good and all the staff knows him. I came on a Wednesday which was actually the best day that you could go on due to the 30% off special discount. My meal was very inexpensive compared to what I get at other sushi restaurants! I couldn't believe it at first and I thought it was a mistake, however it wasn't. When I called and ordered my food to go, It took around 30 minutes for my order to complete. I ordered 5 pieces of nigiri: Sweet shrimp, Yellowtail, Octopus, Mackeral and Red Crab. I also ordered a spicy tuna hand roll (really spicy) and the Catapillar Roll. All incredibly delicious and meticulously concocted. The waitress was kind and the workplace environment was comforting. If I lived closer I would always get my sushi from here. I'll have to just swing by the Takahashi when I'm around the area.
google avatar

Brier C.

Yelp
Wonderful, as usual. The service wasn't up to their normal standard, so I took off one star. Freshest fish, good selection, and hubby got his tempura fix. Recommend getting there by 5-5:15, right after they open. It's big but gets crowded fast! We were there on a Friday. You could probably get a table arriving by 6 on the other weekdays.
google avatar

Lindsey S.

Yelp
Takahashi has always been the spot for quick, pretty good sushi. They used to have 35% off on Wednesday's for sushi menu , but I'm not sure if they actually do that anymore. The staff is friendly, and are always making sure you have enough water, want to order anything else, or are doing alright. The interior is rustic and homey; definitely not minimalistic and not trying too hard. I do like the train that runs along the ceiling - it's a nice touch. I've tried different things on the menu, but one that's always good and satisfactory is the futomaki. It reminds me of Korean kimbap, and is HUGE. I also always get tempura, because at $1.00 for two pieces of potato or carrot?! That's a deal. It's never overly greasy or too fried. It always has the perfect crunch and goes great when dipped in the tempura sauce or sweet chili. I tried the tempura banana the other day and wow, I will be getting again.
google avatar

Kayed D.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite sushi. Master craft! Plus the tempura is worth the trip by itself. Because it's so good, bring good conversation buddies...it takes a little time to arrive to table, but that's part of the experience with quality food. Honestly not only my favorite in pdx, but anywhere!

Yelp
Im a young asian boy, picky eater but not today. This place had me in my feels throughout the whole experience. Rrcommend this extreme unagi roll. So scrumptious.
google avatar

Oneo V.

Yelp
The sushi is good and the prices are great. I'm impressed by how well it held up for takeout considering how much we ordered. Some places have huge rolls and most of it is rice, but not here. The rolls are a good size with a good amount of filling and rice. Great meal and I plan on going back when I am back in town.

Yelp
Grilled Hamachi collar and agedashi tofu for starter. Followed with spider rolls and salmon, tuna, & hamachi sashimi. Full of goodness

Tenley H.

Yelp
You would never guess what's inside judging by the outside strip mall sketch decor. But inside its warm and inviting, with amazing decor and friendly staff. The sushi is stellar quality, and i love that you can order small amounts of tempura with only the pieces you like (ex only shrimp, only sweet potato, etc). Will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
Surprisingly great! Food quality, selection, price, service, ambience... everything was pretty great! Looove the interior, so many fun items with a lot of cultural hints. Bamboo hooks, metal fish, giant wooden brush, fun running lik train trackI will be back! Update: I have been a regular for a year now. And it never disappoints. I used to only love sashimi, but a few visits back I tried their tempura and oh la la are they good. It became my new favorite. Their tempura is also priced very friendly, you can get a piece for about a dollar. I typically order eggplant, oyster mushroom, sweet potato, zucchini, shrimp and chicken. They are all very tasty. I already said I love their sashimi. For maki rolls, I love Jo Roll, very well combined and balanced ingredients to give you a full delightful yum yum experience.

Yelp
Portland is known for having great food in random/bad locations. This one fits that bill. I typically come here for dinner. Parking can be a hit and miss depending on the day. The inside is old and could use some renovating, but even if no work is done, it will keep the Japanese restaurant feel, which I feel should suffice. For appetizer, I typically get the Agedashi Tofu. It's a really simple dish. Some restaurants separate the sauce and tofu and some like to combine them. This one is combined. For some reason, this restaurant has the best Agedashi tofu I've ever had( at least on the West) Most restaurants when they cook the tofu it comes out hot hot. To some people, that means fresh. To me, that interferes with the mouth feel. This one I think cooks it's cooked at the right temperature before it's served. I also like the onions on top for a crunchy and more flavorful finish to something bland like tofu. I also get the ribeye teriyaki, another simple dish they shine at. It's thin cut beef jerky like, but tastes like actual steak. The reason why I point that out is because some restaurants use short rib or super sliced up beef as Ribeye Teriyaki, which I don't like/prefer. For my main dish, I enjoy the Chirashi bowl. Their presentation passes the test. The fish also has never disappointed. And the rice doesn't feel like it's coming from a factory. Is Takahashi flawless? No, there are times when customer service can be sloppy, the wait time can be long, and there is no parking. But I think it's worth it considering how amazing the food is.

Yelp
Love this sushi spot! The atmosphere is on point and the sushi is some of the best I've had in town.

Yelp
We were in Portland for the weekend attending the Annual Tulips Festival. After a long day of touring, we decided to stop in for an early dinner. This place exceed our expectation & much more. The sushi was fresh and the service was excellent. We totally recommended. I will definitely come back here again when we are in Portland. Best chef & staff

Yelp
Best sushi for the best price around. Authentic, real atmosphere. Don't be fooled by the area it's in. It's top notch sushi, only place around where the fish is actually fresh.

Yelp
Still really good, maybe a little more $pendy then I would prefer (But that is probably safe to say about most restaurants). This is the first time I've been back in a few years, and I was impressed that they cleared the paint-covering-the windows off, so it is not as sketchy. Also, my hubby and I took a friend who has never been there before and we were surprised there was actually a Wait on a Saturday night--and a list to put your name down. We were used to basically OWNING the restaurant and just being able to walk in whenever sans crowds; but I'm glad to see them having more business of course! Also, one thing I really, really appreciate about this dining establishment is that they don't just look at a meal as an "In & out & dun & pay your bill" type encounter. We were there basically for 2 hours and it was more of an experience than a forced-dietary-interaction. WE had several courses and several bottles of sake and lots of jokes & interactions in between! It is more like how the culture of meals in Latin America....where they don't just GIVE You the bill at the end, you actually have to request it, because it is a gray area of how long the social interactions are happening and they just let you be and enjoy your meal!

Yelp
Do not judge a book by its cover! Everything I ordered was fresh and seasoned beautifully. I have passed this place a number of times. I remember seeing the parking lot packed with cars. So, on an easy slow Sunday night, I decided to treat myself to sushi. I ordered the spicy tuna hand roll, tempura oysters (came with 3pcs) - so lightly fried. Even after a car trip home they were a bit crisp. The unagi roll was damn good. The flavor from the grill with those fresh ingredients: cucumber /avacado, and the dragon roll ( the tempura shrimp with eel topping). When someone says sushi is sushi no matter where you go, it makes me shake me head. Things like fresh seasoned rice are important; fresh ingredients are mandatory; the tightness of the roll itself, if you pick it up does it fall apart. Even the temperature matters. All of these things were on point here. Nice service. Generous with soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. Clean. Inviting. I will be back. Hell, I wanted more today. But think I will save this place for my special Sunday evenings. Open till 9pm too. Oh, damnnnn! Almost forgot the salmon. Fresh slightly kissed off the heat salmon. My goodness, how could I forget that. Get the salmon too. Sprinkled pink Himalayan salt on mine. Sooooooo good. Thank me later.

Yelp
The food: AWESOME. They have some of the freshest sushi I've ever had here. There is also an array of tempura items, both vegetables and meat. The wait: OK. We went on a Wednesday, so all of the deal hunters were there (ourselves included) and were seated fairly quickly. The service: FAIR. She was slow as molasses and barely came by to see how we were doing. Overall: We will DEFINITELY be back and would gladly pay full price (as opposed to dealing with the Wednesday crowd).

Yelp
We've been a long time, loyal patron here for 27 years. My husband and I had great conversation at the sushi bar with the original owner and founder Seiji Takahashi. When he sold his restaurant to one of his old employees, we were worried that the restaurant would not be the same. I'm happy to report that fish quality had mostly remained the same. However, the service leaves less to be desired.. During Memorial Day weekend, we waited a full hour before we actually got our food. Our waitress was very friendly and apologetic. However, another waitress (I presume the owner's wife), came to our table and argued with us about the pricing of our beer order. (We originally wanted a large beer- our first waitress told us that they only had small size but she would charge us for one large for two small size.) I couldn't believe a restaurant owner would argue with us over $2 or $3, especially when we ordered $100 worth of food and a typical tip would be $20. It wasn't until I threatened her with no tip did she stop arguing. As a business owner- she should not be looking at minutiae and look at bigger picture in order to retain customer satisfaction and loyalty as a repeat customer. I'm hoping that she reads this review as I would like to continue coming back to this restaurant. But honestly, I'm not sure I want to be in the same predicament next time. I eat out at restaurants for rest and relaxation, not to get into an argument over trivial things.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant and extremely pleasant front desk. The place smelt delicious and had beautiful authentic decor. My family of 5 sat down and excitedly began to select from the delicious menu options. We were so excited to treat our Mom who was here with us from out of town to a local nicely reviewed sushi dinner. Our server, Teresa approached to collect drink orders and literally LOST HER MIND when one of our guest was without I.D. It was unreasonable and bizarre. Perhaps she was mad we arrived with a party of 5 after 8:30 pm. The particular guest had no interest in consuming alcohol....she simply smelled the sake upon delivery. Tereasa SNAPPED at our guest and asked her to drop the glass or she would need to remove the alcohol from our table. Our guest politely explained that she had no intention in drinking and the server continued to question her intentions. We completely understand what it means to cover your bases with OLCC. But her approach was so aggressive. It made us feel like she was profiling us. We decided to leave shortly after. Sorry to leave a bad review. It really is because of her tone and overall approach.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. Had large portions. The only thing was the MASSIVE FLY PROBLEM. The workers are kind and quick, but when I went to the restroom for five minutes I came back to two flies in my food! A good restaurant but needs to fix this issue.

Yelp
This place has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember and I've been here for 30+ years. I've been eating sushi for 15+ years and there's no place better than Takahashi. Even their steak is great, cant get better any where else in Portland

Yelp
I highly recommend Takahashi Restaurant for those who enjoy sushi. I stopped by for a quick bite of sushi and tempura and the food was great! The raw fish (tuna and hamachi) and the spider roll were my favorites and unfortunately they did not have any uni (sea urchin). The batter on the tempura was light and perfect and I left with a full belly.

Yelp
this place is in my hood and i have never eaten here and then accidentally got takeout from here two nights in a row! the first night we got a large variety of sushi to share and the soft shell crab tempura. the tempura was okay but the sushi and hand rolls were fresh and delicious and they give extra wasabi and ginger for free which i loved. then tonight everything was closed/busy so we got the teriyaki chicken dinner and it was huge and came with miso, cucumber salad and a sushi roll! they also gave me an extra roll! it was a feast! we loved it and will definitely be going back. remember to leave a good tip!

Yelp
I would like to give it 5 stars. But I noticed some things my first time going in that threw me off. I would give 5 stars or more to the front desk girl who was in training.. she was really helpful and professional. When I arrived I waited for my food to be ready. I noticed a girl sitting down wearing a black hoodie, glasses, and was training the cashier. As I was waiting the girl with glasses asked the new girl how much she gets paid.. (that's so unprofessional to ever ask anyone especially a coworker) Then she proceeded in asking more questions and suggesting things. She asked the new girl if she had a social security and told her that she could get unemployment if she said she wasn't working and just said she worked as a busser. The girl in training just seemed nervous trying to avoid but answer those questions at the same time. Especially being at work and with customers waiting for food. She told the girl in glasses that she's okay and wouldn't want to get in trouble with the IRS and the girl in glasses told her "They won't find out, trust me." I was waiting for my food in shock!!! She was putting her on the spot. Then I hear some of the cooks saying it's so hot in there using bad language that anyone waiting for food can hear. This was my first time going in myself. Usually my husband picks up food for us. Being in there with my toddler and listening to foul language at the same time hearing the conversation out in the open like that made ME feel uncomfortable and I was ready to leave. The place is beautiful from the inside and I would like to dine in after all this mess is over to see if the experience dining in is different then pick up. My husband really likes this place and I would like to go again. First impressions are everything! 5 stars for the girl in training! Even tipped her $5!
