Portland’s Best Seafood Restaurants and Food Carts | Eater Portland

"This tagged-up food truck in the Hawthorn Asylum cart pod may look more like a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater level than a chip shop, but the fish they fry inside is among the best in the city. Luxurious portions of rockfish, cod, and other seasonal catches come out of the fryer golden on the outside and perfectly tender within, and the same can be said for the skin-on fries. The menu has some interesting diversions like double-battered “burnt tails” and bouillabaisse, but unless you’re feeling particularly adventurous, a basket of true cod and pepper fries is the way to go." - Ben Coleman

Where to Find Knockout Fish and Chips in Portland and Beyond

"This Hawthorne Asylum cart is an under-the-radar hard-hitter, serving things like lightly battered Oregon-caught rockfish or albacore with thin fries tossed in a lively spice blend. The tartar sauce is a cool variation on a classic, thanks to the vinegar-y hit of pepperoncini in the mix. The fish Tall Boy serves is sustainably caught and sticks to the Northern Pacific, only sailing as far north as Alaska for standbys like cod." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
My first time trying Rockfish and it did not disappoint 🙌 the batter on the fish is not too heavy. I usually can't eat more than a couple fried fish but I tried every single one! My favorite was the cod (which was slightly meatier than the lingcod) and the rockfish which was also a slightly meaty fish! Highly recommend!! 10/10

Joseph Lee

Google
They serve FIVE types of fish, from rockfish, cod, tuna, halibut, and lingcod. All delightful and gave me a new perspective on different types of fried fish. Huge thanks to the owner for letting us try everything. Also the fresh lemonade is amazing!!

Brandon Duran

Google
Tried rockfish for the first time and it was excellent! Flaky, light batter and well seasoned fries.

Hillary Sanders

Google
Fries were pretty steamed by the time I got them and it took a lot longer than they said it would for the food to arrive. Fish could be a lot crispier. Maybe they do better when they are not busy though, they were slammed.

Rick Barksdale

Google
Decent fish and chips, although just how fresh is questionable. Food has great taste, but portions are quite small for the price. Disappointed they didn't offer clam chowder.

Michael Vogt

Google
Absurdly pricey! Fish, both orders of halibut and cod, were slightly “fishy” smelling which, tells me they were NOT fresh. The portion sizes were small ish considering the cost. Even though the courtyard was quite busy, nobody was eating at this establishment. The 30 minutes we were there we did not see a single person order from them. I guess the locals already know. There are way better fish and chips just about anywhere in Portland And why this place gets the hype of being a top rated establishment is beyond me. If you insist on trying it thinking that I may be wrong then power to you and I hope for your sake that I am wrong and it was just a bad day.

Google
So flakey and fresh! The fries were a liittle salty for my taste, but I still cleaned my plate. Appreciate the mayo-free slaw to balance the fried foods nicely. I had never noticed this cart tucked away in the corner, but it’s the best fish and chips I’ve tried in Portland so far, will definitely be coming back :)

Jonathan Hathaway

Google
Best fried fish on the west coast. No hyperbole I worked at one of the highest rated chippies in New England back in the ‘80s. The cod and chips I had from Tall Boy was the best I’ve ever had. Perfect batter. Perfect cook on the fish. The fries held up underneath. A decent tartar on the side. Fish and chips does not get better than that Want a true UK experience? Get your Tall Boy meal, head out the side exit of the Asylum, down the block to Away Days and order a pint of Bus Stop bitter. You’ll be living the life they could only pretend to on Ted Lasso

Yelp
The food here is amazing. It was one of the first places I ate when I moved here three years ago. The fish is fresh and the portions are a nice size. The fish, especially the Oregon Rockfish is to die for. Am the fries are delicious especially the pepper fries. The service is amazing and I've never had any issues. It's an outdoor area so the vibe is perfect, Definitely in the summertime. Everyone who comes and visits me in Oregon knows this is the first place I take them to. Give them a try. Best fish and chips in the state hands down!

Yelp
Atmosphere: Hawthorne Asylum has one of the best food cart pod atmospheres. Ample table seating, fire pits, a full bar. This is one of the better food truck spots to hang out at. Food: The food quality was good. I went with the White Sturgeon Fish and Chips. The fish was great and held together well. Also enjoyed the fries. However, I felt that for the price it was a pretty small portion. The fish pieces were quite small, especially compared to many other fish and chip spots and I felt like the fries were pretty skimpy as well Price: Average to slightly pricey, but when you factor in how small the portion was I'd lean toward the pricey side. While the quality was good, I'm not sure there was enough value there to return given the alternative options at Hawthorne Asylum Service: Food cart where you walk up to order Parking: Street parking

Yelp
The guy working the truck was super sweet and helpful in assisting me decide what to order. He recommended the halibut which was a great tip! The fish came out in about 8 minutes piping hot, crispy, and delicious! The fries were so perfect as well, which really makes the difference for fish and chips. Hawthorne asylums working class feel is always a treat, and every cart is worth a visit or 2.

Yelp
Affordable and top quality fish and chips--I agree with two other reviewers, the Best I have ever had! There are four types of fresh fish choices, outstanding clam chowder with fresh chunks of clams and a broth that was very well flavored with clams and not too heavy. The chowder also came with two freshly toasted buttery baguette slices instead of the cheap saltine crackers customarily offered by other places. The fish batter was really light and everything super fresh and hot. Friendly owner has been running this for seven years and made it through the pandemic safely. He clearly cares about serving quality food, even down to the homemade tartar sauce which is light and lemony, a real change from the thick processed packaged stuff. Even on a cold rainy day, this food truck court with about a dozen other trucks besides this one is very well sheltered with large high temp heaters and fire pits as well as indoor bar and restrooms. We will definitely return!

Yelp
I enjoyed all the food I got from them. I particularly liked the clam chowder. Good and creamy, with a strong clam flavor but not overpowering. I didn't get to taste any of the bread that came with it because my 6 year old devoured it (so I guess it was good). I can't say that I could tell the difference between the fish that I chose versus whatever is standard in fish and chips (despite the server assuring me I would), but I did think it was fresh and good tasting. I also thought the whole thing was well fried and not over battered. It did take longer to come out than they said, and just longer than I would expect at a food cart in general, but this was mostly a problem because my kid was super hungry and kept asking. Clearly they are making them fresh so I would expect it to take a little while.
google avatar

Ruben B.

Yelp
Fish and chips were incredible, I wish the fish was just a little bit crispier but the quality of the fish was top tier and you can tell the fries were hand cut and they were just the right amount salty. I can't wait to come back

Claudia R.

Yelp
This is the first meal I got during my recent trip to Oregon. This was the best fish and chips that I ever had. I still cannot stop thinking about how delicious the food was and wish I had gone back a second time. Food and service were great! 10/10

Yelp
Not usually a fish & chips kinda gal, but their cod slider was beyond anything I expected! The fish was cooked perfectly - melt in your mouth with a crunchy, light and not greasy batter. And the slaw?!! Lil sweet, lil sour with a kick. It didn't stop me from having a second, but the bun (which had an awesome flavor) could be JUST a little bigger. There's so much goodness going on with the fish & slaw, the bun kinda fell apart. Don't forget their lemonade - mint & jalepeno. Definitely coming back for more and the next time you hit the Hawthorne Asylum Food Carts, don't forget to grab a slider here - you won't regret it!!
google avatar

Yelp
YUM! Best fish and chips I've had in Portland. They even carry local rockfish. Extra bonus having locally sourced fresh seafood! Breading wasn't too heavy. Fish was tender and flaky like I enjoy. Fries were tasty and perfect. My husband and I were clamoring to inhale them all. The chowder was good, had a bit of spice (unexpected). Enjoyed it but would rank fish, chips then chowder in order of preference. Staff was warm in greeting.very helpful in helping me dial in my options as everything looked so good!

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch recently and got the small version of the Halibut. It was around 1/3 of a pound. Was fine for lunch but would too light for dinner. I really liked the light batter and the fish was very moist. I also liked the fries as they had good seasoning. I don't eat slaw but my husband ate it and said he liked it. He also dipped some fries in the tarter sauce that was homemade. The guy running the cart seemed hurt that I said I don't like tartar sauce and insisted I take it. Husband did say it was pretty good.
google avatar

Samyoul S.

Yelp
Nice people! Ordered and ate there because fish and chips is best fresh. Good value and cool to know where fish is sourced from. The slider was the highlight. Cod was crisp, everything worked. The pepper fries were great, too. However, the batter on the rockfish was a little soggy and fell off. Not what I expected, also I think it's a crime to charge for vinegar to go with your fish and chips. Will be back for the sliders

Yelp
My go-to for delivery hand cut & batters fish & chips, if I don't make it myself. Although I live about 4.5 miles of crosstown streets, it's still better by a good margin than a well-known, closer option...

Samantha U.

Yelp
i'm normally not a fish & chip gal but this was delightful, and the clam chowder was chefs kiss yummy. Service was great, didn't take too long. The heated seats&tables were also a plus!
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
You might be skeptical that great fish and chips can come from a food truck. I was too.... that is, until I tried them. Holy crap. The fish and the chips (fries) are excellent, as is the slaw, and there's a great variety of types of fish to be had and the price is super fair compared with the market. When I go to the Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod, I have 20+ options, and I don't *always* get Tall Boy, but I always know I am happy to go to Asylum because if nothing else appeals to me that day, I know I can always count on Tall Boy.

Yelp
Love the casual and comfortable vibe. Parking wasn't hard to find & free for 2 hours. The prices and quality were worth the drive. We tried the local Rock Fish and Chips and the Chowder. Both were delicious. The chowder was a bit chunkier and a tad chewy, but just take note of the different seafood in it ahead of time.

Joe H.

Yelp
Takes 20 minutes to put chowder in a cup. I think they forget about you here. I'm still waiting.
google avatar

Molli O.

Yelp
Nothing but great things to say about this fish and chips truck! Not only is the location great but their food speaks for itself. I've never ordered anything I didn't love! My go-to and usual order is the Halibut. It's pricy (but it's expensive anywhere, honestly) but so so so good. Their fries are also delicious and the tarter sauce just brings it all together! Definitely recommend if you're giving Hawthorne Asylum a visit.
google avatar

Allison H.

Yelp
Beware: long wait times. I ordered the fish & chips at 7pm and waited over 50 minutes before my food arrived. At one point I asked the person tending to the food truck if there was an issue and they rudely told me my food would arrive soon without explanation. All five of my friends had completely finished their meal long before mine arrived. There was no explanation why it took so long to prepare. Very poor service, and mediocre food.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the most delicious super fresh halibut gluten free fish and chips here, cooked and served by a very kind fellow! I think it's been 20 years since I had fish and chips and yes tears came to my eyes. So good! My husband and daughter had the gluten full kind and concurred they were excellent. We'll be back! Thank you!

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Best fish and chips I have ever had. Visited from Texas and this was the best food I had my entire trip.
google avatar

Krissy H.

Yelp
I can't say I was overly impressed by the food here leave it be the chowder rock fish and chips to the fries
google avatar

Anne L.

Yelp
Very light crispy batter! I got the 2 piece cod with fries. Very nice size portion with lots of lemon and tartar sauce. Delicious. The cole slaw was a bit disappointing though, but overall I thought it was a great meal. Will order again. Quick service, too.

Kara M.

Yelp
Food was really good. Had the rockfish which was great, not oily like fish and chips can often be. Fries were cooked perfectly. Problem was the portions were tiny. There were maybe 10 fries in the container. I order two piece and got 3 pieces of fish that were maybe 2 bites each. I left hungry and went home for another meal. Twice as many fries would have made me happy. Hawthorne asylum food carts are slick. Lots of covered spaces and they give you the buzzer thingies for when your food is ready.

Jolynn S.

Yelp
Great people and even better food! The rockfish and chips were amazing. The jalapeño lemonade is unique and refreshing as well. Fast service and a great atmosphere!
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
The lemonade was awesome. Unfortunately that's where it ended for us. I ordered the steamed clams. They took an extra bit to be done which was fine. But the final product wasn't edible. They tasted like they had gone bad and the sauce had very little flavor. The clams were mushy, mealy, and bloated. I would try the lemonade again because it's delicious. Not sure I would try the food after wasting that much money on clams.

Mabel E.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Cod was fried perfectly, just the right amount of batter - absolutely delicious. Also dug the Cole Slaw which wasn't mayo based.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
I ordered it in so it could've been a soggy disaster by the time it arrived but surprisingly it was still crispy and the fish tasted super fresh. The slaw that came on the side had cilantro if im not mistaken and it was a interesting addition to a traditional slaw and I don't think I can ever go back to the traditional slaw ever again lol. The tartar sauce had a jalapeño flavor kick without the heat and was delicious. But the stand out show stopper was their lemonade concoction with jalapeños. OMG I'd order this in gallons it was that good!

Chris A.

Yelp
We come to Asylum with the family for dinner a lot so that we can all get something different. This time I tried Tallboy. I'll start with the fish. They have a lot of different choice which I like. I got the Cod. It was perfectly cooked. And the fish was flaky and moist. Breading was light, flaky and not greasy. If I had one criticism of the fish it was I would have liked the breading a bit thicker, but that is being nit-picky. Overall very solid. Chips (fries) were delicious and solid. Basic chips. Coleslaw was good as well, although I felt like it needed a bit of salt or vinegar to brighten it up a bit. Overall solid. I'll be getting it again.

Yelp
As a pescatarian, I was delighted to find this cart in Hawthorne Asylum. There are multiple options for the fish & chips, of which I chose cod. I also ordered a cup of clam chowder. The Tall Boy Slider looks really good, and one day I'll be back to try it, but it was off putting to me that the cook was touching his phone and then handling food without at least sanitizing first. I decided to go for foods that either didn't need to be directly touched or that would be fried in hot oil before being served to me. The fish and chips was really good! I still haven't found any that compare to Luna Sea Fish House in Yachats (try it), but these really hit the spot! I got a two piece and thought I would likely still be hungry, which is why I ordered the chowder. Boy, was I wrong. The fish, though small pieces, were thick. I really felt like I was getting my money's worth of fish, but I also prefer a little more coating to fish ratio. The coating was tasty and crunchy, though, even when taken to go so I am overall satisfied! The fries are well coated in a salt and pepper seasoning that I thought was excellent, as I am a huge fan of highly-seasoned fries. The chowder is flavorful and doesn't even have bacon! It's been a long time since I've come across a good restaurant chowder without it. Like I said, the fish was really filling so I didn't even end up eating much chowder and will eat it for lunch. If I hadn't anticipated needing more food, this would've been a very inexpensive meal that I am thoroughly satisfied with. I'll be back for that slider and definitely have to try more items.

Carter W.

Yelp
$30 for mediocre three piece Halibut fish and chips (yes I'm sure I'm absorbing some of the supply chain cost) and heavily salted fries is not a sustainable business practice. Flying Fish's offering is a better value (and better chips) for a lot less price.
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
This is a food cart located in the asylum pod. The tables area is heated and covered. The fish is excellent, very fresh and well prepared. We love the chowder as well. We go at least once a month for our fish and chips fix.
google avatar

Alexis W.

Yelp
Best fish and chips + clam chowder everrrr! I was blown away. The fish is so fresh with the perfect amount of crispness. The clam chowder was by far the best clam chowder that I have ever had. Absolutely amazing food truck

Nakayla R.

Yelp
Food was just okay. Would like to try it again when I can pick it up myself so it's more fresh
google avatar

Gale M.

Yelp
Want fish and chips? Go to Tall boys. I was craving real Fish and chips after returning from the UK. I found Tall boys thank the gods. So close to the real thing. If the chips were not french fries I would give them 5 stars. The chips are good just not real chips. The fish and batter are perfect. Service is good what little I experienced on the phone. I ordered delivery so I can't comment on Ambiance.

Steve K.

Yelp
Really good fish and chips This place is part of my regular lunch places and it is always good I've tried a few options and all have been good. Especially the sliders. But I always come back to the cod as for me nothing is better The fries are fresh cut and cooked perfectly
google avatar

Tyler C.

Yelp
The halibut toast was fantastic. The slaw was very tasty! The jalapeño added depth without a lot of spice.
google avatar

Vickie R.

Yelp
Right down the street from Cartopia Tall boy sliders are so fresh and delicious I literally had one an drove back a few hours later. This is a must if you are in the area.

Yelp
No chowder down. I ordered the clam chowder and yes it has real clams in it. Nice fresh clams and whole peppercorns was the best part of the soup. It is really watery and doesn't have enough potatoes. Celery and other ingredients. I waited 30 mins for two bowls of soup. The man didn't know how to multi-task so he did orders on by one. It was like watching paint dry. Won't be going again
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Stumbled on Tall Boy today, what a great find. Hot and delicious fish and the fries were perfect tossed in their spices and I thought a great price as well. Delicious.
google avatar

Tricia O.

Yelp
Delicous! A great lunch for a warm spring day! The seasoned fries and lemony tater sauce are a nice touch of flavor. Not a fan of the coleslaw, it had fruit like mango pieces and a taco or Carribean spice. I could see the appeal, or why it might be a favorite. I'm just more of a traditional creamy coleslaw kinda gal. It wasn't bad though, I had no trouble finishing it! Love the sparking lemonade with mint and fresh jalepenos ... Yum! A great way to taste the flavors of a jalepeno without the heat. All the sweetness of the lemonade made it not spicy at all.

Tim J.

Yelp
Fish was cooked well but tasted store bought. The fresh were delicious. Didn't receive half my order those delicious clams I keep hearing about never made it to my bag or the uber diver ate it idk
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
Great food . He was a really nice guy too. Wish we didn't have to drive back to la. Best fish and chips I've ever had . Clam chowder warmed me up good too' Thank you for amazing food .

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Food was great!! We had fried pacific cod, fries, Cole slaw and chowder. I would not hesitate to recommend!!

Karen L.

Yelp
This is a bite size fish nuggets and shoe string fries cart. Not a fish and chip establishment. The prices are inflated the slider is a white sauce and coleslaw mess that tastes like mayo. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Olivia O.

Yelp
The best gluten free fish and chips I think I've ever had. Most gluten free batter or breading isn't quite the same as the normal stuff, but this was absolutely perfect. The batter was light and crispy, the fish was moist and tender. I had to stop myself after my first two pieces to take a picture before I gobbled everything up. The fries were cooked and seasoned to perfection as well. I also ordered the Tall Lemon, a delicious and refreshing twist on lemonade. It paired perfect with the fish and chips. I can't wait to come back and try other items on their menu!
google avatar

E Joni M.

Yelp
Just received from delivery. Still warm and was pleasantly surprised for ordering outside of my box. Looking for good fish (w/out chips) order the 3-piece without chips extra lemon and extra tartar. A bit spendy but that's the normal price going forward but was very very happy with what I got.
google avatar

Alexis Z.

Yelp
omg absolutely perfect fish and chips!!! i have had two perfect fish & chip experiences of my life. this (tall boy fish & chips and seafood) cart at the asylum- near cartopia also, was one of those top 2 experiences in my life with fish & chips. fish = perfect batter = perfect fries = perfect so go go go !!!!!!! you will be very happy that you did my only regret was not seeing that they made clam chowder and i did not try it with my meal. i have high hopes though that it will also be amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Tall Boy is an affordable and reliable spot for greasy eats. The fish is some of the freshest cod I've ever had. The inside is so soft and hot that it really just falls apart in my hand. The batter is crisp and just thin enough to where the flavors of the fish shine through. Great sauce, and the fries were seasoned to perfection. I don't care much for the slaw, but that's very minor, all things considered. I am glad to have found this place and am looking forward to trying their clam chowder (my all-time favorite soup) as well as their fried zucchini so I can tell myself it's technically still a vegetable. Gotta get in those daily veggies! The fish n chips portion is more than enough to make me full, and the price tag is justified by the quality.
