Did a little staycation with a friend at the Beekman thanks to his Amex Platinum benefits, so we got to make use of 1) a $30 per person credit for breakfast here and 2) a $100 credit for another meal of our choice.
Ambiance: The Beekman is a beautiful, iconic NYC hotel. When you do have a meal at the Bar Room at Temple Court, look up and marvel at pyramid skylight and the seemingly infinite balconies. Each meal time is very busy. In the morning, we saw a steady rush of hotel guests eating breakfast and lunch (one even in a bathrobe, ha), and in the evening, it was frenetic and the "place to be" for dinner and/or drinks. Everyone was dressed impeccably. Note that if you enter from the back (the hotel side/elevators), you need to walk up to the front of the restaurant (street side) to get seated by the host. Note that if you're seated in the middle section, there are a lot of plush couch/sofa-type seats: you end up leaning back from the table. If you have a lower back problem, you might want a bar seat or a booth. This combined with the general noise level makes it hard to hear those with lower or softer voices. Restrooms are downstairs, separated by gender. There are multiple stalls and full doors for slightly more privacy.
Food-wise, everything tasted good, but I think it felt more palatable because of the food credits. I think if I were forced to pay full price, this would be another "one and done" fine and dining experience.
Breakfast was particularly overpriced. The smoked whitefish benedict was $27 and a cappuccino $7, and I was upsold some $10 sourdough toast (2 pieces :p). I get that it's a fancy place, but in this economy, this still feels like a crime.
For our other meal, we decided on a very late lunch - order before 4 PM. This felt a bit more worthwhile. My friend and I each got a hangar steak (no complaints here, perfectly cooked) and the shaved Brussels sprouts salad (surprisingly HUGE for an appetizer). I also tried the Penicillin cocktail. This is one of my favorites which is hard to find made correctly, even in NYC - the bartender did not disappoint. After tax and tip, our total was ~$159.
Bottom-line: if you have Amex or a similar benefit for the Beekman, enjoy your dining experience here. It's nice for couples doing a staycation or for an anniversary celebration. If you are coming on your own just to dine and are not fabulously wealthy, it's worth at least one trip for the 'gram, but not necessarily a repeat destination.
