Tensho

Tensho occupies the former Kagaya location. While it offers the required A5 Wagyu cuts, their prime cuts are marbled and have a very tender consistency; plus an expanded seafood option for the hot pot. Unless you want to take a chance, reservations are highly recommended.

Unreal meal! Same as in Japan shabu, even better than next door sushi!

Female owned and operated, service & food are excellent. The appetizer and dessert were the main home runs for me. I got a sweet tooth and a thing for small delicious dishes like the monk fish and king crab that are one bite dishes. As for the main entree it's as fresh as it gets, price is for a set meal so it's worth it. You'll definitely feel stuffed by the end even if it looks like not much. The scallops and shrimp are my favorite 🤤. Also, the creamy scallop on cucumber owner special was a great start to service. ☺️ My only feedback for the soft opening would be to reword the requirements for sharing a set meal.

Amazing experience at Tensho. Wonderfully attentive staff and delicious dishes. Especially recommend the Wagyu Sushi that just melts in your mouth. Great for a special night out in Little Tokyo!

One of the best restaurants my friends and I went to during our LA trip. Agumi, our server, was bright and attentive despite us coming in near closing time. We are so thankful for the wonderful experience and DELICIOUS food. The apps that were part of the hot-pot course meal were filled with so much flavor. Next time I come to LA, I’m definitely going to try their nigiris because the wagyu nigiri we ordered was mind-blowing!!

Have known of this place for quite a while, but only recently stopped by. The experience I had here was really good! The menu itself is designed to be a set menu, with courses coming out as your table finishes. Each course came out quickly and the service in between was amazing. My tea/water was almost always topped off without me asking and just overall very attentive to our tables needs. So you must be wondering why the 4/5 * (I'd want to do 4.5 if I could).. Unfortunately it's because I found the soup (just water?) used for the shabu had almost no flavor. This became more apparent after we cooked everything in it, and the broth essentially still just tasted like water. This affected part of the course, when they create either a rice porridge or udon soup (udon soup ended up being better). Both came out with minimal flavor and the ponzu was the saving grace of this second to last part. Overall, I think this place is great from top to bottom (especially the apple pie) and I don't mind having a light flavored meal, but I just felt for the price point there could at least be some more to the broth. I don't know maybe I'm just uncouth with how it's supposed to be. I'd def still give this place a try if you haven't had.

Great atmosphere and service and great food! The waiters were very attentive and quickly refilled my tea whenever it ran low. They constantly checked on us during our visit which is a 5/5 in terms of service in my books! At first glance, each order doesn't seem like a lot but after they cooking everything in addition to the dessert, we sure were stuffed! Definitely enjoy coming here!

My parents and I came here on Christmas night (6:45 PM reservation) to celebrate Christmas and an early birthday dinner for my mom. I had mentioned the birthday in my reservation and they were kind enough to bring out our dessert with a candle and the staff and customers all sang happy birthday. It was super sweet and thoughtful! We ordered the USDA prime beef and seafood shabu shabu option for $108/person and we opted for the rice soup after we finished our shabu. The meal came with three starters, our meat and seafood, the rice soup, and dessert. This was a very traditional shabu shabu experience and it was our first time here since they changed restaurants. It was previously Kagaya (also a Japanese shabu shabu), not sure if it's just different management. When the meat came out, I genuinely didn't think I would be full because there were only 5 slices. The seafood and veggies do eventually fill you up + the udon / rice soup you get after you're done with your meat. There were only two servers working the whole night and it seats about 4 parties at the tables and maybe 10 people at the bar. Only thing we were kind of bummed about was that we weren't seated at the bar, so remember to mention that when you make a reservation if it's something you want.

This is an old school Japanese shabu restaurant in J town. Interior is minimalist and clean. Menu had a good selection but limited to shabu meals. We tried the wagyu shabu and seafood meal and USDA prime beef set. Service was hit and miss as there was only one server for the whole restaurant and she was running around to assist a larger group and the entire restaurant. The wagyu was amazing tender and fatty. Vegetable selection and udon as expected. There is choice of dessert with the set meal. Overall expensive restaurant and food and service not really memorable. Not a repeat for me.

This place was a great experience with how each dish was presented and how well the sushi was prepared for each course. I think the service was very nice and friendly with the waiter constantly checking on us if we liked the food. The ambiance was like an izakaya and felt very traditional. The food was overall very solid and melt in your mouth for the price point that you're paying. Would reccomend to take a group of friends to enjoy something so good together and reflect on the dishes. Dessert was amazing and worth coming here just for that.

Had a really good meal here! We missed the traditional shabu that we had from Japan and this hit the spot! The service was impeccable and everyone was very friendly. I will say though that this place was very very hot when we came especially when everyone's pots were on. But the food and service was so good that we didn't even care about it being hot.

We had such an amazing experience at Tensho. The service was amazing and the A5 wagyu was absolutely delish. I would describe it as a premium/upscale shabu experience in a comfortable setting. There were two of us, so we got one portion of just the A5 Wagyu and one potion of half seafood/half A5 wagyu. The seafood was pretty good, but if we ever go back we'll probably just get 2 portions of the A5 wagyu at it was just unbelievably good. The meal comes with 3 appetizers, your selected meat dish/veggies, rice or udon cooked in your shabu broth, and a dessert. It was the perfect amount of food. They also have a great selection of sakes and wines. Overall it was just an amazing Japanese shabu shabu experience, and the servers are super attentive, friendly, helpful, and happy to answer any questions. I can't wait to go back!

The wagyu and king crab were super fresh and tender, best we had so far. The appetizers are awesome too, Im curious how they made everything so tender. We had 3 desserts luckily, on top of the famous banana pie, the matcha pudding was very good too. The cream brûlée didn't surprise me tho. Looks like small portion, but was more than enough for me and my husband. Which we went with one combo with extra people, not 2 orders. Service was great too, she would kneel down to explain everything before we order, and gave my baby free meal with extra dessert. Also we walked in without reservation, and had our seat no problem. Great experience.

Reviewing ONLY happy hour specials: $6 malt draft beer and $2.50 oysters (as of July 2024). I first stumbled into this restaurant while waiting for a table at the ever-busy Sushi Gen next door. Before 7pm, they have awesome deals for oysters and beer. I loved the oysters! They're small, but super sweet - I didn't ask what type of oysters they are, but judging from the smoothness, size, and taste, I'd say they're west coastal (similar to Kumamoto or Hama Hama). We tried both the raw and baked. I would recommend the raw for an overall better fresh taste and their toppings are delicious. The baked, I didn't care much for the sweet soy, but baking the oyster made the meat taste sweeter which was also delicious. Definitely can't go wrong with the HH menu whether you're just stopping in like me or kicking off a shabu shabu meal. Been here for HH twice now and service is superb. No complaints and can't wait to be back!

Magnificent!! Truly a memorable experience celebrating our anniversary. The quality of their Deluxe A5 Wagyu is unsurpassed; it's beautifully marbled, a melt-in-your-mouth kind of beef. I've eaten it many times in Japan and can't get enough. We also ordered the USDA Prime Beef as a comparison. This was delectable as well and certainly well priced. The dashi broth and the goma (sesame) and ponzu (Japanese vinegar) だれ (dare) complemented the beef perfectly. The quality and presentation of the dishes in their set course is what I'm accustomed to. I felt as if we were dining in Japan!! It included many delicious appetizers and was very filling. The sake flight choices were awesome and I definitely recommend ordering it. Ayumi, was a pleasure and her attentiveness was impeccable. I really can't wait to return. Thank you Tensho!

It's pricy but so good. The wagyu beef is melting in my our mouth. It's a such a nice experience.

I was a big, big fan of Kagaya back in the day (my review was ROTD!) and was sad to find out it sold and changed names, thinking that the quality and service must've changed. But fret not! Everything is the same as it was. I've been twice since the name change and the only issue was once, the rice porridge was way too salty but the next time, it was perfectly seasoned. The wagyu melts in your mouth but the USDA Prime Rib is delicious enough. The food is still amazing in taste, freshness, and quality, and they still have the best banana pie. Still a 5-star experience! Parking in the strip mall it's located in was free on my last two visits.

Shabu shabu!! My favorite food of all time haha. Tensho is located in the Honda plaza and for $6 cash u can park ur car in the lot. Came here on a Friday night and there was a bit of a wait but not too bad. You can of course make a reservation though. We were seated at the bar top and served immediately. We got the set menu with beef and seafood and although we thought it wouldn't be enough food for two people, it was totally enough. The shabu was authentic and really great! For me though, it definitely was on the pricier side but if you come for fantastic quality meats and seafood then you get your money's worth. I'm happy I got to try it finally!

Excellent experience with exceptional service and food quality. We sat at the counter so we watched them prepare the food with so much precision and attention to detail. I absolutely loved it and will go back again. Best part, no cellphone rule which means respect guests and establishment by not talking inside the restaurant and doing a food photo shoot.

TL:DR It's high quality, authentic Japanese shabu shabu but you pay for the food/experience. We came here on a Saturday night because it was packed most other places in Little Tokyo even at 5pm. We were a little skeptical going to a spot which wasn't packed (although it was busy by the time we left) but it had good reviews (thanks Yelp!) and so we thought we'd give it a try. The "share" menu is a little confusing since you have to order your protein anyway but we each ordered the beef/seafood combo and just asked for all crab instead of the other seafood. You get a series of appetizers, which included sashimi, seabass, and a seafood soup. Loved the melt in your mouth tuna and the delicate but flavorful seafood/mushroom soup. The seabass was gummy in texture and was probably the worst thing they had which still wasn't too bad. And then onto the main course. Now this isn't your Americanized shabu shabu where you choose a broth like Tom Yum or miso. It's a traditional shabu broth which is just a kombu (kelp) dashi broth. So it's all about the ingredients and the dipping sauces. They give you a ponzu sauce and a sesame sauce which was savory but had a little sweetness and a little spice. Pretty addictive. The beef was tender (make sure you don't overcook it!) and the king crab just needed a quick dip in the broth to warm up but was delicious. The veggies add a nice contrast and freshness but we ate most of it. This is a healthy portion of food so come hungry. After we finished, you could choose udon or zosui. Udon seemed too heavy after all that so we picked the zosui which is just rice and egg cooked briefly in the broth you had so it mixes all that yummy flavor. It was a nice ending to the main course. AND THEN came dessert. I got the banana pie with ice cream which was bananas in cream sandwiched between two thin layers of wafers and ice cream on top. Pretty good but would've preferred the bananas to be softer. The pace of serving is timed well but you can easily spend 2 hours here so make sure you're not in a rush. The service is great and the staff was really nice. We ate at the counter which was also a nice experience. Really loved this spot BUT it doesn't quite reach 5 stars because it was pretty pricey. While I get why it's so expensive, growing up, shabu shabu was a casual meal for us and so mentally it's hard to get around a $100+/person shabu meal. I think if you want an authentic shabu shabu experience, this is the spot but I'm guessing most people would go to an AYCE spot and just indulge there.

Such a great spot for date night or over all gathering. Service is 100 percent friendly and efficient. Shabu Shabu meat quality is literally melt in your mouth! Prime rib eye is a great choice if you're not into super soft melt to touch wagyu.

5/5 top notch shabu. Highly recommend counter seating as watching the chefs work is so entertaining. Would recommend getting the wagyu, king crab, seafood combo for a first visit. The meal is quite filling! We started our meal with oysters, which were half off before 7. We had fresh oysters and baked oysters. I preferred the fresh. The set hotpot meal came with an amuse bouche of sashimi over shisho leaf. The shisho really complemented the freshness of the fish. We then had some sort of soft tofu dish. I wish I knew what it was called because it was my favorite dish of the night. Maximum umami. Then came the shabu shabu course which included a huge plate of veggies like cabbage, enoki, a second kind of mushroom, some sort of water cress or water spinach, spring onion, tofu and glass noodles. The meat platter included a generous portion of wagyu, 3 giant king crab parts, a prawn, 2 scallops and an oyster. The wagyu was perfect and needed minimal time in the hotpot. Went really nicely with the sesame sauce. The seafood went quite nicely with the ponzu sauce. After finishing our hotpot the chef took the broth and made an amazing rice soup and udon soup. One of the highlights of the meal. Finally, we finished with dessert. We ordered the matcha crème brûlée and the banana pie but the chef also threw in a chocolate cake for free. Everything was amazing and the service was excellent as well. Highly recommend and we will be back.

Excellent food and service!! We are so glad to see the same menu items from Kagaya! We celebrated our anniversary there, the servers were so attentive and warm, going above and beyond to provide a wonderful dining experience.

Two friends and I decided to give Tensho a try to celebrate a birthday. Not only was the food superb, the service was excellent and thanks to Ayumi-san, our dining experience was perfect! Highly recommend the live king crab and A5 wagyu. The desserts are also so delicious. All three of us agreed that we look forward to going back again soon!

Still top notch. I strongly recommend to up the budget a little bit when you visit Tensho (ex- Kagaya.) The Wagyu and live crab are just at the different level. They run out of the live crab pretty often. It's better to call to reserve them if needed. Appetizer - tie. Wagyu and seafood set - still exceptional. Porridge and noodle - tie. Deserts - amazing - this is the section really surprised me and I see many level of upgrades. I am glad the best shabushabu is back!

Not as good as before they changed ownerships. The side dish or appetizers where better and more creative in the past when it used to be Kagaya. We had 2 beef and seafood platters, 1/2 dozen raw oysters and 2 alcoholic drinks and the bill was $314 after tax and tips. Was it worth it? Not really. We had better meals with that price tag.

We had Japanese meat shabu-shabu and king crab shabu-shabu. I thought it would be mainly meat, but was surprised to find that the king crab was more delicious than I expected. The crab was very sweet! I wish I had ordered more crab!

I was lucky enough to find myself staying in a hotel on the edge of little Tokyo and Tensho showed up when I was looking for food in the area. I loooove Shabu Shabu, so it instantly got my attention. I'm so used to the all you can eat style places, I forgot how good serious Shabu can be. They do it in an omakase style with multiple courses, and each one was more phenomenal than the last. I got the prime beef and it was so tender and delicious I can't even imagine how good the Wagyu must be. The staff was friendly and took their time answering my questions and did I mention how yummy it is? I will def be back next time I'm in the area! Update- I just got back to my hotel and opened up the bag with my leftovers. This is how they're wrapped- I feel like I'm back in Japan.

Excellent service. Located in a plaza that has parking for $6! Make a reservation as seating is limited. The shabu shabu here is very upscale and premium - serving wagyu and seafood. They $188 course gives you three appetizers, two plates of meat + seafood and either rice soup or udon soup to finish the meal. I really loved the desserts! Order one of everything if you can. I highly recommend getting the sake flight - each sip was so sweet and refreshing. Service here is wonderful - thank you Ayumi for being so attentive even though she was taking care of all the other tables on her own.

It was good but way overpriced for what it is. Ordered the AAA wagyu and seafood (one of their most expensive plates) and as you can see a majority of the beef looked lower quality than the two pieces on the right side which are clearly AAA wagyu. Not sure if they cheated me or they just cut the beef from a different piece, but the fat content in the beef looks completely different. Service was good and the people are nice but since you're spending $300+ for dinner for 2 I guess they should be nice, right? Another thing I noticed was they said they gave a discount of $20 but the prices on the receipt were $20 more than the menu price... so the discount simply brought the price down to what it was supposed to be.. fake discount lol. Not that it matters to people who can afford to eat at a place like this. Probably won't go back.

I've been a regular for more than 10 years at Kagaya. I was so happy to see that Tensho, despite the rebranding and ownership change, remains similar and better service and quality. And no... no comparison to any other shabu house in LA. Absolutely amazing service and quality. Highly recommend!

Formerly known as Kagaya - Tensho not only upholds the exquisite service and hospitality experience but the food is phenomenal. Today's appetizer courses included sashimi, unagi egg custard, roast beef (June promotion), and Chilean sea bass with baby peach. Best meal I had in a while! Worth every penny for such high end ingredients. Rice porridge is a little different than before, it's called rice soup now - but same flavors & still delicious. They brought back the apple and banana pie which was a delightful surprise today. I just left and I can't wait to come back again for more.

Been trying so many times to book this most famous shabu shabu restaurant at Little Tokyo in vain ! for today. Luckily, I got the booking so I can with my friend Betty ! had a really nice time. Enjoy their ambience - we order Wagyu beef , king crab leg, and seafood, draft beer ! everything it's so delicious ! the service is really one-of-a-kind , friendly and considerate, especially they use the leftover soup to cook the congee for us along with the Japanese pickles and the preserve the plum to help digestion! really nice ! we are so full that we thought we can't have anything more. But when the desert comes. It was another amazing surprise ! apple pie with vanilla ice cream, separated by the Filo doll, homemade sorbet raspberry, healthy and delicious. It was such a wonderful night the best to shabu Shabu I ever had in Los Angeles.

Wow wow wow. Service is absolutely amazing and the most hospitable place. We booked the last reservation not knowing we were coming in at closing time and they absolutely catered to us. The food was phenomenal. The workers were so kind to show us how to enjoy every course and did not make us feel unwelcome one bit. I 10/10 will recommend this place to all my friends and will be returning for years to come. Thank you Tensho for an amazing experience.

Intimate, authentic hot pot experience which literally made me feel like I was dining in Japan. The service is super nice and welcoming, and they explained the menu and selections to us Westerners. Some of the flavors were a bit too "foreign" for me, but I tried everything nonetheless (some I liked, some I didn't care for). High marks for the excellent draft beer and the sake we ordered; delicious! The sushi appetizer was extremely high quality, with almost a sweetness to the tuna (two types). Cold roast beef appetizer with onion sauce was very tasty, but I wish they had cut the pieces smaller. Let's talk about the main course: the hot pot (shabu-shabu). We all had the USDA Prime Beef. Meat was all sliced to order (incredible!), along with a mountain of tofu, mushrooms, and green leafy veggies. The meat was tasty, if plain, but the two sauces added some nice flavoring, used sparingly. Noodles and rice soup (your choice) come after, and then the dessert. This is not a place for the masses and not a good choice if you're on a budget. You're going to spend a solid $125 or more per person, easily, plus tax and gratuity. While not every flavor was in my normal wheelhouse, it's a totally unique experience for many of us. If you're adventurous, give it a try; you'll learn a lot and enjoy the experience.

Finally got the chance to come to this place! Located in the same plaza as Tea Masters and Sushi Gen. We made reservations and was seated promptly. Unfortunately we had to share a pot, but that wasn't a big deal since we shared a meal and hotpot is meant to be eaten together. The staff is exceptional, they are super welcoming and helpful. The appetizer were really refreshing to start: - squid and radish: super light and tasty - halibut and uni: also light and there were so many flavors (salty from the seaweed, freshness from the uni, and this slight natural brine on the fish) - steamed egg with king crab: simple but it was the best app *chefs kiss* We opted for the usda cut + king crab + seafood. I found the meat to be soft yet chewy. The seafood was interesting, not my favorite. The king crab took it away, natural sweetness and so much meat! It comes with rice porridge or udon and usually I would get the udon, but the veggie plate came with noodles already. And I am glad I got the rice porridge because it was super nostalgic. Huge rice and soup fan, so this hits home for me. The dessert was a bit of a let down. I was really excited for the seasonal orange sorbet, but it extremely filled with texture of orange peel? Yuzu? Something...but it made the sorbet super pulpy and bitter. My partner got the green tea creme brulee and that was okay. Green tea was great to end the meal! Glad I got to try it, but don't think I'd be back.

Everyone else is ravin bout the shabu shabu (valid) but the happy hour oysters and draft beer were super refreshing after a long day of work. The service was top class and the conversation with other guests at the bar capped off the experience. On my list of must return

I took my wife here for her birthday and it has been one of the best if not the best dining experience I have ever had in LA. We felt right back in Japan when we dined at Tensho. The service was amazing, the server was very kind as the Chef was as well. The chef did an amazing job handling the food as we were able to watch him since we sat at the counter which I highly recommended because it gave a more better experience. Now the food was absolutely amazing, from the course of the appetizers to the shabu meal, then the Chef made us a closer meal, then the amazing dessert menu. Honestly I was so excited that I forgot to take a photo of the main course. But here's some appetizers and dessert. The ambiance of the place was very relaxing, very much to how you would feel from a nice mom and pop shop from Japan. Definitely will be coming again soon! Our new favorite spot.

Disadvantages: Expensive and mediocre environment. Advantages: The seafood is very fresh, the Wagyu beef is pretty good, but the portion is a bit small, and the service is very good.

Absolutely amazing experience, everything tasted amazing and was as good if not better than Kagaya. The best part was probably the beef and dessert, but everything was amazing. Likely the best dining experience I've had in a long time, 10/10.

Authentic fine dining/ shabu shabu. I would say that the meat i chose was a bit overpriced since I thought i would get more crab. The restaurant was small and homey which is perfect for shabu shabu. The service was the best I've experienced in Little Tokyo. Everyone who works there looks like they're passionate about what they're doing and are always down to make your experience better. My pot went entirely black when the clam unleashed a black cloud of sand. They got me a new pot, vegetables, extra crab, and an extra dessert. Will be back for more beef and the positive vibes.

Keeping the Kagaya spirit alive, came back to see if Tensho can live up to such a legendary owner, and Tensho did not disappoint. We had the prime shabu. The appetizers that came with the meal was elegant, artistic, resulting in delivering a superb dining atmosphere for our palette. The Wagyu sushi was a very generous potion. The shrimp paste with a flan texture was such a unique dish experience. The fact that the new owners are able to continue, and even create a new taste experience only provides a progressive approach to what is an iconic restaurant to Los Angeles.

One of my favorite restaurants in the whole city. Best Shabu Shabu you can get in LA. Super friendly servers. I've been coming here for years (dating back to the days the restaurant was called Kagaya). Not cheap but definitely worth the money. I would highly recommend this place!

A bit pricey, but worth every single penny. Great service + fresh & clean ingredients! What else is better than a Japanese hot pot for dinner in a cold evening?! Be aware, try not to stuff yourself at the beginning, because there will be a noodle soup at the end of your meal. The desserts are light but very satisfying, ended the dinner with a perfect finisher. Oishii!!!

The first time I experienced Kagaya was in 2004. I have been a frequent customer since then. When Masa chose to leave back to Japan, I was devastated. Best Shabu Shabu experience I ever had. Then I found out an employee was taking over the restaurant and I was so happy! Everything is the same, same amazing servers and the back house. Food is still fantastic and the new chef puts his own twist on the appetizers. Perfect place for a romantic date or special occasion. Some say it's pricey, but you get what you pay for.

I came here today to celebrate a birthday and everything was impeccable! Lovely appetizers, tender beef, and the udon soup was amazing! Keisuke, Ayumi, and Posh provided the best service! I cannot wait to go back!

I was worried. When I heard Masa sold Kagaya, my heart dropped. Not only was Kagaya my favorite Shabu, it's also my favorite restaurant. We decided to give Tensho a test drive. It's the same location. A lot of the same staff. Mostly the same menu. It's delicious. And the new twists to same of the classic favorites are spot on. We will miss you Masa. Wish you luck on your future endeavors and travel. Thank you for 20 years of happiness. Tensho new owners and chef are firing on all cylinders and am happy to enjoy some new flavors while simultaneously getting the continued quality and classics I'm used to.

It was hard for me to enjoy this place because its vibe did not match its price. When I asked the waitress for her dessert recommendation, she gave me this weird face and attitude. The table next to us was laughing and talking sooo loud plus music playing in the background that I had a hard time hearing what my friend was saying... it was quite exhausting to dine there... Always thought Japanese restaurants take pride in their service and quality, but I didn't experience that there ;(

As alFloridians, it's always been our go-to restaurant whenever visiting LA. The meal is unlike anything we can get in Miami and KaGaYa had always been a staple of ours throughout the years (since ~2004). Happy to report that Tensho is every bit as good as it's former. The experience remains as interesting and delicious as it's predecessor while bringing new tastes, presentations and beautifully crafted desserts. We miss you Massa, but happy that many of the original staff have remained, and that the experience has maintained every bit of its masterfully curated experience. Thanks for leaving in such great hands. We look forward to our next journey.

The beef was the star - ceramics - the glassware for sake and really everything is stellar - side dishes - divine really good and beautiful. - chicken side dish - strange, tasty, scary. - oysters - really meaty. Order if you like big oysters - green tea cream brûlée - really really good. Best of the bunch imho. - Mu Sake - really good option for a full bottle sake, slightly sweet and good. Sit at the bar and watch chef takumi-San cook. Worth it. If you had been to kagaya come back you'll be happy you did.

Was recommended Kagaya by many friends and upon arrival realized there's new ownership and a new name. Overall amazing experience especially the service. Everyone was super attentive and everything came out at perfect timing. The food also was very delicious and had a very unique taste. My husband and I shared an entree and there was a $50 charge which was understandable. We both got to experience appetizers and dessert. Will definitely come back next time we're in LA
