The Annex Kitchen remains one of Fresno's true culinary gems, and after my most recent visit, I was reminded exactly why the drive from Clovis is always worth it.
I had made a reservation and was initially disappointed to learn that only "pizza counter" seating was available. To my surprise, it turned out to be a highlight of the evening. For smaller parties (2-3 people), I now highly recommend it. Watching the chefs craft pizzas and other dishes for the stone oven felt like dinner and a show (an insider's secret that makes the experience even more special.)
The Annex strikes a perfect balance between upscale refinement and a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. The low lighting, thoughtful design, and lively buzz make it equally suited for an indulgent weekday dinner or a celebratory night out. For a Tuesday evening, the restaurant was absolutely packed; but that's no surprise here. The consistent crowd speaks volumes about the level of execution and hospitality.
Our server was attentive and warm, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness. He checked in regularly without ever feeling intrusive--a small detail that elevated the entire experience.
We began with their seasonal mushroom pizza, blistered beautifully in the stone oven with a crisp yet tender crust. It paired wonderfully with a curated charcuterie board of artisanal meats and cheeses. For the adventurous, I highly recommend the bone marrow; this was my first time trying it here, and it was outstanding. Rich, silky marrow spread onto toasted sourdough with a touch of butter was decadent without being overwhelming.
For entrées, the braised steak (cooked a flawless medium-rare) arrived with tender Italian-style broccoli, offering a rustic yet elevated combination. The Fresno State corn pasta was another standout: bright, sweet, and creamy in a way that showcased the quality of local produce.
To complement our meal, we enjoyed a bottle of wine, but I have to highlight their house-made soft drinks. The blood orange soda in particular is fantastic; refreshing, slightly tart, and a perfect non-alcoholic option for designated drivers or anyone who prefers to skip the wine list.
From the kitchen staff to the front-of-house team, The Annex consistently delivers excellence. It's no exaggeration to say this is one of the top restaurants in the Central Valley. Whether you're a local or just passing through Fresno, do yourself a favor and make a reservation. Trust me--you won't regret it.
