The 5 Best Hotels in the Cotswolds, According to Vogue | Vogue

"The market town of Charlbury is close enough to London to make this first-rate pub with rooms unusually reachable as a weekend escape: it’s a single train from Paddington and a 10-minute walk from the station. Inside, a pared-back restaurant with exposed beams, open fires, and plaster walls gives way to ten bracingly simple bedrooms with little artificial light and a neutral palette, yet plenty of creature comforts—standalone baths, radios, woolen blankets, and rainfall showers; families can also take over the two-bedroom Loaf Cottage down the road (children aren’t allowed in the other rooms). Founded by Phil Winser and James Gummer of The Pelican and The Hero fame, it draws people in for traditional British food, much of it grown on a nearby farm in Chipping Norton, so do book dinner at least once. The mood is lively on weekends, amenities are kept to the essentials (restaurant, bar), and the house pies are the thing to order—best with a heaped bowl of roasted potatoes and a green salad." - Jo Rodgers

The 16 Best Restaurants & Pubs In The Cotswolds - Cotswolds - The Infatuation

"The Bull knows it’s cool. Dish descriptions are like the monosyllabic grunts of a teenager (“pork chop, apple”), mud-free Land Rover Defenders are parked out front, and the garden on a sunny day is the sceniest place for miles around. Like its sister spots in London—The Hero and The Pelican—this Charlbury pub is the stuff of glossy food magazines. Less bashed-about Frazzles, and more gurnard and fennel." - sinead cranna

The Bull - Charlbury - Review - Charlbury - Cotswolds - The Infatuation

"The Bull knows it’s cool. Dish descriptions are like the monosyllabic grunts of a teenager (“pork chop, apple”), mud-free Land Rover Defenders are parked out front, and the lighting is so seductively low it'll make you want to bulk-order candles for home. Like its sister spots in London, The Hero and The Pelican, this Charlbury pub is the stuff of glossy food magazines rather than messy piss-ups. Think bar snacks of courgette fritters rather than bashed about Frazzles. The food is delicious, the dining room will make you feel like an extra in a Guy Ritchie film, and the garden on a sunny day is the sceniest place for miles around. photo credit: The Bull video credit: The Bull photo credit: The Bull photo credit: The Bull video credit: The Bull Pause Unmute" - Sinéad Cranna

The Bull

"The duo behind The Pelican in London have returned home to the Cotswolds to open this 16C pub that oozes character and boasts flagged floors, timbered ceilings, plenty of exposed Cotswold stone and twin open fires. There is a relaxed and intimate feel to the place, and an understated quality to the simple, traditional cooking. Dishes like cured trout with green tomatoes use first-rate ingredients and deliver bags of flavour. Dining here is a hearty, satisfying experience, while bedrooms in The Barn are the icing on the cake." - Michelin Inspector

A stunning pub in a stunning village. Myself and my partner were lucky enough to be able to spend one night here on a cold November evening. The room was perfect. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. The pub/restaurant area was very cozy. Everything was candle lit which gave it that extra bit of cosiness. We had drinks by the log fire followed by the most amazing three course meal. We were served by a young girl named Izzy who was absolutely incredible. She went out of her way to make sure we were well looked after an asset to the team at The Bull.

Had a fantastic experience here. It’s a beautiful pub with a relaxed atmosphere. Wonderful for a winter’s day with the roaring fires. We went for lunch and the food was exceptional - everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed their meals - I highly recommend the pheasant! The service was professional, attentive and friendly. If I could give the place 6 stars I would and will definitely be making it into a regular haunt!

We came for dinner and it did not disappoint!! The staff were so knowledgeable about the meno and even the full cooking process! You could tell how fresh everything was and the fact they grow all their own fruit and veg really showed!! My mum and I shared the pheasant nuggets, chicken bull pie, beetroot dish and frangipani tart to finish. All incredible!! I would highly recommend!!

We had dinner at The Bull last night and overall really enjoyed our experience. The food was really good - we especially loved the carrots, which were outstanding, and the pheasant. Service was also genuinely friendly and impressively quick. A couple of small things to mention: some dishes could have been served a little warmer, and a touch more seasoning would have elevated a few elements. For example, the potatoes were wonderfully crispy, but they lacked a bit of flavour. The pub itself is very cosy and charming, but because it’s so popular, you do feel the fast turnover. It felt a bit like being moved through the experience quite quickly - almost as soon as you finish, the next step comes. It slightly takes away from the relaxed, lingering atmosphere the place otherwise has.

Charming and cozy and delicious. I had the best venison I have ever had, better than I ever thought possible. Vegetables straight out of the garden were amazing. Cutest and sweetest servers, particularly Charlie. We also had a chance to speak to the amazing head chef, Max, who went out of his way to spend a little time with us. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Had a fantastic lunch here yesterday. Food was excellent; as well as some more traditional starters and main courses there are a selection of thoughtful and interesting vegetable-bases dishes which could make up a meal on their own or form sides to go with the mains. Service is friendly and very knowledgeable - all the staff could describe the dishes in detail. Somewhe we look forward to returning.

Had dinner there on 28 Nov 25. Excellent service. Main course was very good - Pork shoulder done to perfection served with potatoes and veg. The sweet let it down a bit though. Sticky toffee pudding with a very plain sponge base and generic toffee sauce.

We spent our third year anniversary here & what a magical, romantic & charming pub this is. Dinner - sublime. If you happen to dine here when their pie of the day is on, please don’t hesitate (see photo) Izzie walked us through the menu (detail second to none) and served us throughout the evening. Thank you - impeccable service. We also had the pleasure of an extra special night cap courtesy of the mixologist. We hope to see a Sundial on the menu in the future. Topped off with a warm welcome at breakfast. One of the best pub breakfasts we have enjoyed in the Cotswolds Thank you all, A & R

Yelp
A very cozy pub with wonderful service. The food was the best we've had in the UK so far. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Without any hesitation I'll state that I had the best burger of my life here, the Bull Burger! A substantial burger in itself accompanied with fries. What stood out most was the quality of the beef, the most tender, succulent cut of ground meat you can ever hope for, and grilled to perfection. I don't get overly excited about burgers, but this was the apex and I thought I had died and gone to burger heaven. All this is a very charming, tasteful pub in the Cotswolds countryside. Comfortable, cozy and oh so pleasant. We came for lunch just after noon at seated in the restaurant. We were given a choice of that or the pub/bar section. I washed it down with a pint of Cotswold Pale Ale... a great choice with the lunch. Service was professional, friendly and fun. They were very engaged and thoughtful and I highly recommend going out of your way to visit and enjoy this establishment.

Yelp
Great experience! There is parking, exterior court where you can eat/have a beer. Friendly staff. Good wine and decent food. The pub is clean and well organized. We felt warmly welcome. The owners were very nice to us. We had Room#5 with a bathtub and really liked it. Bed was a little soft and we could hear a little the neighbors upstairs but we would go there again without any hesitation. Overall a great experience :)

Yelp
This pub come bb/ hotel is located in the heart of Charlbury in the Cotswalds. 1) The pub side of things. This is not your old style - Queen Elizabeth used to roast peasants here kind of pub - it is nicely modern....not too modern mind. It is clean and the atmosphere is genial. A good mix of young and old patrons. 2) The Hotel side of things Checking in and out was a doddle. The rooms were clean and modern....everything worked as it should. You have a TV and a choice of DVDs (admittedly not many) in case you get bored at night. Frankly I just spent it in the pub though...much better. The breakfast was just what the Doctor ordered...well maybe not the Doctor who looks after your heart or arteries and stuff but come on....its the countryside you deserve a proper full english breakfast - I did. The staff are really nice and friendly. The lady who makes the breakfasts was happy to get up at whatever time requested to make the breakfasts - no fuss no complaints...she was bang on time, the breakfast was great....... and she wore tasteful boots...ahem but I digress.

Yelp
We popped on for dinner on a Wednesday night and sat in the bar since we hadn't booked a table. It was cozy and comfortable. The staff, both on and off duty were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and priced as expected for a gastro-pub. The fish and chips, £12, was really, really good. Not overly greasy and with a lot of flavor. The cauliflower soup needed a little salt but was good. It is made with almond milk and is vegan. The mozzarella and tomato salad was also tasty. Not sure where they managed to get tomatoes with flavor in October! They didn't have any stout available so we went with a local amber ale. It was okay. A little hoppy for me. We finished with a lemon posset (sort of like firm custard or pudding) with mixed berry compote. Yum. Overall a very satisfying meal.
