Fundamental LA - Review - Westwood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"One might assume casual wine bars are a dime a dozen in Westwood, but one would be wrong. And for that reason, Fundamental LA is one of our favorites. If you’re looking for a midday buzz, the extensive beer and wine list will certainly provide it, but it’s the food that’ll really keep you coming back. Everything from the chicken torta to the orzo is excellent, and with the daily “Power Lunch” special, you basically get all of that and a cookie for $15." - Brant Cox

On the Grid : Fundamental LA

"With a belief in the basics, Fundamental LA places a precedence on fresh ingredients, locally sourced food, and creating an intimate atmosphere where you would be able to have great conversations with some of your favorite people. The wines that they sell in store are actually made by farmers and will often pair their food with some fine wine selections - even offering a wine club known as the "tippler club". The modern space is simple and elegant - allowing its beliefs in the fundamentals to speak through the food to the decor." - Grace Duong

Mar 2025 There is a little place just south of Wilshire. It’s unassuming and you could miss it if you drive by too fast, but you would be missing a lot. They say that they sell “French tacos” but it’s really so much more. The wonderfully warm wraps that they make have some of the best flavors I’ve ever had in a hot pocketish format. The brea of the wrap is unique and that flavors inside were so good that I didn’t even use the sauce that comes with it. I had the G.O.A.T. and the Basilica. Grilled Chicken and the rest. Highly recommend. The owners are the real deal. Both French and hard working. Give them a visit. You will not be disappointed. Dis is some great Grindz.

Google
Some seriously delicious French burritos. Actually, I would say it’s in between a burrito and a Panini. They use large flour tortillas, then you choose your ingredients to go inside and then they put it on a press so it has the best of both worlds. The guy working behind the counter was extremely polite and very helpful. They have a fairly small menu, but it has some great selections on it. They don’t have dedicated parking, but it’s easy to find street parking in this part of town, depending on the time of day. Pricing is also very fair and the sizes of everything are very generous. They have some tables inside, but most people seem to order to go, which is what we did for our meal as well. For my first time, I tried the GOAT and especially loved the goat cheese inside. It mixed with the honey and made for some great flavors, and I would definitely order it again. We also got a side of fries, which are also included inside the wrap, and those were great as expected. Overall, I think this is a great fast food option and I plan to be back in the near future to try more items.

Google
Food ordered from door dash. All food arrived warm including the cold dessert. The fries were exactly like the ones I got in elementary school back in the 80’s. They sent the wrong flavor of tiratwist that wouldn’t be so bad if it was anything other than Nutella flavor. I can’t stand Nutella. The ranch dressing is bottled and not homemade. Would never order again, wouldn’t ever recommend.

Google
The French Way was delicious and a great place for lunch. The server/chef/cashier was wonderful. Really nice and she clearly cared about her job, the customers, and the food. I ordered the Paris signature and it was definitely the right choice. So good! I will be back.

Google
I absolutely love this place! I ran in here looking for a quick snack, not only did they make the food quickly, but they made it with so much love and care. The food here is amazing, specifically their signature dish the French role. Service is spectacular, authentic French cook and workers all speak French. If you’re just visiting Westwood or are a UCLA student, I highly recommend The French Way!

Google
First thing you need to know about this place is that is owned and operated by a French guy who came to the US recently, and he prepares the food the same way they do it over there! This is not one of those places adding the word french in their name to make their sub-par food appear fancy. He's the real deal, and he's a really nice guy. With regards to the food, this is not high class, but it is one of the best to-go food I ever had. Yum, yum, yum. If you haven't tried, please do, you'll be happy you did.

I want exactly sure what to expect, but I love trying new places. Check this place out! A really unique take on French Street Food. We got the small size French folds and they were delicious and filling. Great service, great little spot.

Tried the Paris Frenchfold and it was great!! The chef is recently moved to the US from France and is very sweet; the place also offers a discount for UCLA students.

Yelp
Delicious! I usually start feeling gross 3/4 into a burrito because the flour tortilla is just too much for me. This was not the case here. Everything was delicious! For the "protein" choices, I've tried the fried fish, fried chicken, grilled chicken, and egg roll. Of the 4, the grilled chicken is the only thing I wouldn't order again. I was surprised I liked the veggie egg roll because I usually don't like it on its own anyways. But the fish was my favorite and I'd order it again and again.

Yelp
I tried the Paris and the Burger for a quick fix at night and they were beyond my expectation. The flavors work overall, and the sauce is quite more-ish, cutting through the heaviness of fried nuggets and potatoes. These French tacos are by no means highest quality of food out there, but as far as fast food goes, hearty, quick, and tasty. I also enjoyed my conversation with the owner. Very friendly. Will check it out again in the future - and would recommend to give it a try too, especially if you are looking for a unique fast food or something for the late night.

Yelp
I didn't quite understand the concept at first, but once I did, I was able to fully appreciate this place. It's basically a French-Algerian street food restaurant. Such a unique concept. It's definitely got "comfort food" vibes. Located in a little spot with a fair amount of parking in the front. The owner is actually quite cool, and I know that he works really hard. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for some unique comfort food in the area. I've had their fish, chicken fingers, and burger wraps. My fav was the burger, but my boyfriend liked the fish best. Very unique for LA, and I appreciate that. ;)

Yelp
It was late at night and I was hungry for a easy and quick eat. The photos of the foods piqued my interest. I went ahead for a pickup order of the small French Fold ($7.90) which comes with your choice of 1 protein, sauces, and toppings (extra $). I was wondering what it would taste like with the interesting combination I chose: chicken nuggets, ranch, and barbecue. It ended up tasting better than I thought it would! I loved how soft and chewy the tortilla was and how savory the wrap was. The sauces blended together with the meat and it was very yummy to keep on eating. I also got an order of french fries ($3.30). The fries were plain and alright; the sauce on the side helped make it taste better. I think it's because they wrap aluminum foil around the fries for takeout to keep it hot and warm (which it did), however I think the steam moistened the fries and made it on the soggier end. So keep that in mind! But yeah, the rest of my drive was satisfied chewing a yummy meal!

Yelp
I wanted to like this place because service was nice, place was nice and clean, they are new and . . . maybe because since I moved to the US, I've become a bit of a Francophile, like many Americans. But alas, their meat- and-potatoes burrito or wrap ( they call it the French Fold) was bland. (I had ranch sauce in it.) That nice melted cheese in their picture -- that is extra charge. And maybe, if I paid extra to get that cheese, I would have a French Fold that is not bland. But, really, it should taste good to begin with . . . especially for a product that is presented as the flagship. And if you want it to taste extra good, then pay extra for the cheese. The extra charge is not much but it is the principle. Their fries was mediocre. I did choose their Algerienne sauce on the side. I had it on the side bec they warn you that it is spicy. That is good (about the warning). But it was not unbearably spicy. And it was actually tasty. So if I come back to this place, I will have that Algerienne sauce inside my French Fold instead of their bland ranch sauce. This definitely is not a 4.5 star place. I believe those people who gave them high ratings are Francophiles and were grateful to meet friendly Frenchmen. In summary, this is a 3-star place at best.

Yelp
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Interesting French street food experience that's worth a try. I read about these guys in the LA Times a little while ago and decided to check them out after a visit to the Hammer Museum nearby. It was a pleasant, surprisingly spacious shop, and was not busy on a Sunday afternoon. I got their Fish and chips (only one size, as it's one of their "signature" items), and the hubby got a small veggie. They were out of bottled water so we had to get a soda. When the food came out the sandwiches were piping hot and pretty good-sized. I call them sandwiches, but I believe they call them a "fold", and no longer a French taco, which caused a mild controversy. Anyway, health food this ain't, but it was yummy, if a little bland. The hubby got his with a "spicy" sauce but we couldn't really detect any heat or visible veggies, lol. I think I liked mine better than my hubby. I wouldn't mind trying them again, but not sure he would.

Yelp
Friendly service, tasty food! I tried the veggie French fold with a side of fries and both were very good. The food was ready in no time (5-10 minutes) and the guy running the store was adorable. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
If you're looking for something totally unique and amazing. We have been craving French Tacos since trying them in France and England. This is BETTER than both places we tried. Generous portions enough for two meals or more, depending on your appetite. AND they can make butter beer, 4 different flavors of "twisted tiramisu" with Nutella (instead of coffee) and speculoos cookies, for example. There are Oreo ones too. If you're vegan or vegetarian, they can do this with Impossible meat or spring rolls. In the photo: French fold with chicken nuggets, ground beef, bacon, onion rings, fries, special cheese sauce, Monterey Jack, and goat cheese. Don't miss the goat cheese for amazing flavor. The staff is awesome and attentive. Location is perfect with decent parking south of Wilshire near UCLA.

Yelp
The restaurant is charming and is cozy! This is latest trend from France, the French fold or French taco. There is a choice of protein coupled with fries, sauces to choose from all stuffed in a tortilla with a cheesy sauce. It's is unique but at the same time familiar tastes. Favorites were the buffalo chicken, the GOAT and fish n chips! A must stop if you are near the area! Got to talk to the owner as well - great guy and fantastic cook, originally from France.

Yelp
The gentleman at the front was very nice. I had never been here before and recommended. I tried the Paris. It was delicious. I'll definitely be back to try more food. I think the only thing that would make the review a five out of five would be nicer dining tables for ambience, but other than that delicious food.
google avatar

Yelp
The cashier working on Saturday night was so kind and patient with my friend and I when we were deciding on what to get here. There wasn't anyone else in the restaurant at the time but he carefully packed our orders for us! The Paris signature was really great and filling, I was able to save mine as a little snack for the next day. It was sweet and tangy with the bbq sauce and the inside sort of reminded me of a warm chicken bake! I'm glad I stopped by when I was visiting Westwood!

Yelp
I love this place! The French fold is somewhat similar to a burrito but with a unique twist. I loved getting to experience the French food and culture in an authentic way as the two owners are from France. The food arrived quickly and was very delicious. The employees were very kind and made the experience enjoyable. There was a great atmosphere in the restaurant and it was walking distance from UCLA's campus. I will definitely be returning! I wanted to try all the options on the menu.

Yelp
Amazing wraps. People ask me if these are burritos and I say "...kinda? And they're delicious!" Great prices and even better staff. I appreciate the love and care they put in their craft. Their place is super cute too!

Yelp
I have ordered from here several times & it never fails to hit the spot! Always good. I like building my own wrap & their ranch dressing is tasty.

Yelp
This was my first time going to The French Way and I would definitely come back again. I got The "Paris" for my lunch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting the Algérienne sauce to be spicy but I really liked it! The gentleman who made my meal even included a lollipop in my to-go bag, which I thought was really sweet (no pun intended).
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful place. I have been a couple times. Service is always awesome and helpful. Prices seem high but it filled me up for hours and had an amazing taste. Definitely worth it. It is an easy walk down from Wilshire. I prefer this to most of the places in Westwood Village.

Yelp
I am genuinely puzzled by the high ratings on Google and yelp. When this place first opened, I didn't know what a "French Fold" was at the time, but later learned that this place sells "French Tacos." I can only assume they renamed them to avoid mockery, given how seriously Angelenos are about tacos. To date, I have tried a French Fold with every protein option they offer. The guy working the counter is friendly, but I've found that the meat is consistently bland and unseasoned/minimally seasoned, even the marinated-looking pork, and frozen chicken nuggets/tenders, and the fries are flavorless and soggy. The only real flavor comes from the sauces. I typically went with a combination of algerienne and something else. The algerienne sauce is thankfully decent (not particularly "spicy" IMO, but I've had "spicy" food in Amsterdam and uh... I can see why it would be labeled as such here, I guess), but it's not enough to flavor the entire thing. I've had excellent French dishes (mostly in Tokyo, for some reason), from fish pies to galettes, so I've been pretty let down by this. I don't know if it's inherent to this dish. In my limited experience, this is just a worse version of dönner kebab. From the other reviews, it seems that these are more or less authentic to French Tacos in France, which originated from a dönner kebab vendor. I'm curious.... if you had the option, why would you choose French folds over dönner kebab? I've had dönner kebab in the Netherlands and Italy and they've been consistently delicious and cheap. Personally, I would like for the meat, especially the ground beef, to be seasoned and the fried should maybe be salted and cooled on a cooling rack for a bit first to prevent getting soggy. Conceptually, a French taco is just American fast food as a wrap. It shouldn't taste bland, and that's really my main gripe. The food is filling and reasonably priced for the portion size, but for something that's so unhealthy anyway, it should at least taste good. My last order was a fold with the pork about 7 months ago. The pork looked like it was marinated but ended up being bland and rather dry, so I was really disappointed with that one and haven't been back since.

Jeffrey J.

Yelp
Awesome French casual food. Like a burrito but French. Owners are super nice and the food is made fast and fresh. My daughter is completely hooked so they know us. Hope it catches on with the UCLA crowd as they deserve it. They would probably catch more college kids if they were in the village vs Persian square. But happy they are walking distance from me.

Yelp
I happen to see this place, as I was cycling by and knew I had to try it! Today's the day! =D. Stopped in on my way to work. Inside has an industrial feel with high ceilings and open space; I like it. To business!! The gentleman behind the counter happily assisted me in ordering for the first time. Because I can't have just one thing, I ordered the fish and chips and the burger. The fish and ships was awesome, amazing and delicious!!!! Huge wrap, fresh off the grill goodness!! He gave me spicy mayo to try, which incidentally, went very well with the fish and chips! Devoured half of it without any effort! I can't wait to try the burger wrap! I'll update my pics when I do try it! The gentleman explained that this is French Street Food =o, WoW!! It's a must try, people!! They're open late! Both of my choices are from the Signature menu and cannot be beat!!!! Hits the spot after cycling hard, lol and worth the effort!! French Street Food in Westwood y'all, come check it!! =D

Yelp
Overall, I enjoyed my fold (their signature French grilled wrap / taco). I opted for a limited-time-only signature fold that had chicken, pesto sauce, french fries, and pepperjack cheese. It was a solid amount of food but I just didn't think it was all that tasty, fairly bland actually. And although I liked the texture of the grilled tortilla, the fries didn't add as much texture to the filling as I would've hoped. I didn't try the fries on their own, I'll need to go back and do that -- I'll certainly try another fold too. It's a small operation, only one of the owners (he was nice) was working at the time so I had to wait a solid 15-20 minutes after ordering at the counter, but there was plenty of seating and it was nice enough inside. It certainly feels like they're still setting up, a bit sterile, dark, and quiet but eating there was not bad. They're got a cool picture of the Eiffel Tower hanging against some faux vines above a bench which I thought was cute. I will definitely be back, just not super blown away by the taste on my first try.

Yelp
Have you ever had a French burrito? Now you can, thanks to The French Way. They specialize in FrenchFolds - your choice of meat, cheese sauce and fries, wrapped in a tortilla and grilled in a panini press, served with sauces on the side. As I took my first bite, my first thought was, "Whoa, this is amazing." That was quickly followed by, "This would be the perfect food to eat while drinking!" I ordered a medium with chicken ($9.95). It was the perfect size for me (and I have a large appetite). Unlike a burrito, it didn't have much filler (like rice and beans) and was primarily big chunks of chicken in a cheese sauce, with a sprinkling of fries. I chose ranch and BBQ sauce as my sauces (BBQ being the better of the two choices since it offered more of a contrast). My husband got his with Impossible Meat, which cost an additional $1 (which is a bargain for an Impossible substitution). The meat had the addition of spices, which made it more flavorful than just straight up Impossible. He got the BBQ and the Red Hot Buffalo sauces (his preference was the Buffalo sauce). They also have salads, but you want to order the FrenchFold (unless you can't do gluten or are trying to eat healthy). I ordered my food online for takeout, though they do have room inside for dining. Metered street parking on Westwood Blvd. I'd give the food four stars, but it's a pretty good bang for my buck, so I'll bump it up to five.

Yelp
Love these french folds! Had a beef one tonight, it was excellent, had a tasty white sauce inside and was fairly hefty and filling. Will be back!

Yelp
My mom sent me an article about this place and I was so excited. I loved tacos when I lived in France and never thought I'd ever have them again, especially not in America. Although the tacos are not the way they are in France, which use kebab meat and spicier sauce, they are still really good and utilize other flavor combinations I haven't had since France. I hope LA people take a chill pill and will be willing to try a sandwich with french fries, meat, cheese and sauce because it'll be well worth it.
google avatar

Rea T.

Yelp
Came here after a late night movie Glad there was something open late in the area. Staff was friendly and seemed to do it all on here. From taking the order, cooking, to serving. It's fast food joint vibe. Clean inside. So kinda like chipotle concept where you select the meat, sauce, and anything extra. I got one with ground beef, Thai chili, and mozzarella. My husband got veggie spring roll, house French way sauce. We also got fries which was ok. It appears as though most of the food comes from Costco - that's okay for fast food.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I really liked this place! It was super unique and really tasty. It's basically a French/meditteranean burrito so kind of fusion but I really like the flavors and how filling it was. It's a little hole in the wall but I will be back for sure! Super friendly staff and also willing to help out for your first time since I was really confused
google avatar

Raymond G.

Yelp
Fun concept that I hope gains some traction. Great hangover or late night food. Go nuts and enjoy a burrito disguised as a fat crepe
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Honestly don't know why this place has 4.7 stars on yelp. The food is fine, but every little thing is an extra charge. I stopped for a quick cheap bite and it ended up costing much much more than anticipated. Also, the flavors seem pretty nuanced, as if they are gatekeeping the seasonings somewhere in the back. I would put 4 stars but had to take off an additional one since they didn't offer any tap water. You had to buy it by the bottle... They also ask for a tip yet you have to get up and grab the food yourself as well as buss your own table... odd. It could have been worth it if the place was cute but it was pretty dull inside.
google avatar

Teva B.

Yelp
Don't usually leave reviews, customer service super nice guy. But man I could barely get through eating this. Guess this type of food not for me. I'm sure for others it may be

Serge E.

Yelp
hmmm, the Frenchfold is abosulety delicious. it reminded me of all the sandwiches back home in France. Thank you Guillaume

Brea B.

Yelp
Recently tried the French way for the first time and it was so good!! We got the mini burger and the Thai spring roll. My boyfriend is very picky and thought he would only like the mini burger but ended up loving both. They were warm and comforting, a great meal for cooler weather!
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
I like the "French folds" for an occasional snack. They're cheap and simple, and very tasty. Also it's apparently a thing in France... I had no idea! Everything is prepared to order which is great. Haven't anything that I didn't like, the sauces are good. It's usually quiet inside, but I always see a lot of people coming in and out for takeout orders, so it must be popular. They're open late which is nice for the students nearby.
google avatar

Max B.

Yelp
What a fun little find in Westwood! I have spent a lot of time in France and had heard of French tacos (o'Tacos is *everywhere* in France) but never actually had one. It's definitely comfort food -- if you're seeking something warm, cheesy, and carby, you've come to the right place. I had a small chicken French Fold, very filling for the size. The two guys working were really nice, I think one was the owner. They're a great alternative to Fat Sal's which is where we often order from. I love supporting small businesses and hope they stick around, it's the kind of food that would be great after drinking or when you have late night munchies. My only suggestion would be to include more veggies on the menu -- I think since this is LA, people would really enjoy the option to add caramelized onions, red and green peppers, jalapeños,maybe even sautéed zucchinis or avocado for a little California twist on this French dish. Bonne chance, guys!

Yelp
The best kind of "fast food"! The service was great, ambiance was chill and the food was incredible. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Super friendly dudes cooking up French Folds, which is a concept that I never heard of until I really walked in the door. Guess I do be a silly American. The fold I got was stacked with chicken (I got a double) which was shreaded. I should have probably headed a bit of advice and gotten more cheese or sauce inside the fold in order to counteract the dry nature of the shredded chicken and potatoes inside the fold. For sure, I'll be back to try out more and new combinations.
google avatar

Roman R.

Yelp
First time here today, fries were delicious, felt like i was in a bistro in Paris, the sandwich was really good, looked like a fusion between a panini and a burrito, i paid less than 9$ and i was full Will come back for sure
google avatar

Cindy P.

Yelp
I really appreciate the fresh ground meat in the French fold. My husband and I went there the first day they opened and have gone back continuously to support them. The folds are addicting!
google avatar

Mario G.

Yelp
Ok so reading the reviews You can expect low quality food but it's cheap! So I ordered Uber eats which seems like it's a tad inflated on the delivery app so I suggest go there. The burritos are odd - the French fries are bad (poke some holes in the to go container so they stay crispy!) Just can't grasp this concept - taking over the fundamental LA location that was know for amaIng but fattening sandwiches - I was hoping for a yummy sandwich ! It could use lettuce & tomato maybe ? I dono gassed on this experience I won't go back but I think college students might like it. Chicken strips 5 stars! If I were 18 and on a student budget maybe 4 stars...
google avatar

Simon D.

Yelp
This place clams to be serving an authentic French "sandwich ". I have family and friends born and live in France, no one has ever seen anything close to it. To be fair I did try it, it's a burrito with a French name and it's not that good.
google avatar

Jenique H.

Yelp
I was starving and looking for some comfort food in the area. Found this spot, did the impossible burger with crispy onions and their special sauce... DELICIOUS. Since childhood, I've loved putting fries on any and every sandwich or burger so I'm sold here! Enjoyed it so much, I went back a couple days later for the Fish and Chip sandwich. Delicious! The size is great for the price, it's hefty and loaded with goodness.

Yelp
Bland. Ordered the Hamburger special as per the guy behind the counter when I asked what the best thing was there. It was ground beef and french fries in a tortilla. With sauce. But the whole thing was tasteless. Maybe something else would be better? There was no seasoning. Wouldn't order this again. Interesting concept though.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Westwood. It's a bit of a walk from UCLA but you can't beat the price! The pair running the place are great and so is the food! For being wraps that can be filled with fast food items like fries and nuggets, they don't feel greasy or heavy at all. Satisfying and on the cheaper side, and I think it's a really cool concept worth trying out!! I love changing up the sauce and filling every time I go, and the only thing that could make me go here more is if I wasn't lazy to walk. Highly recommend :)

Yelp
This place was so delicious! My boyfriend got the Paris and I got the small French fold with chicken tenders with bbq sauce. The folds do come with fries inside already. I highly recommend this was to anyone. The small is great if need a light meal but I was a little hungry after so I wish I went with a medium size instead!
