Food:
We ordered Gem Salad, Sugarkelpt Pita, Roasted Squash, and Pork Coppa. Overall, the food felt lazy and uninspired, especially given the prices.
The Gem Salad we ordered didn't have any gem lettuce despite the name. It was romaine (which is fine; just call it a romaine salad). The apple garnish was all clumped together looked like it was hastily ran thru a mandolin and flung on top. The chef could have at least took the time and care to separate out the julienne pieces. Flavor was fine, but presentation just felt lazy.
Sugarkelp Pita was actually interesting. Pita was soft, yet with a nice chew. Kelp added a subtle umami and pleasantly oceanic flavor. Carrot shoo was also unique and interesting.
Squash dish was a bit under-seasoned, and otherwise blasé. But there is a twist - Romaine lettuce made a return in this dish! Inexplicably, this roasted squash and lentil dish included wilted, cooked romaine lettuce. Did the chef want to include braised Swiss chard and management said, "we're too cheap for that, so use the romaine lettuce from the 'gem' salad instead"?? Chef, blink twice if you are held against your will...
Pork Coppa was okay. A bit on the dry side and also a bit under-seasoned, but otherwise not offensive. The sauce (maybe some kind of a pluot reduction) was tasty and paired nicely with the pork. Minor point - It was garnished with furikake. Not sure if this added anything to the dish and/or was necessary. I saw furikake on at least 4 of the 12 dishes on the menu. I guess the chef loves furikake on everything.
Service:
We arrived at the restaurant on a Sunday evening with a reservation. There were 2 other groups ahead of us, and no one even acknowledged our existence for at least 10 minutes (it sounded like the groups ahead of us waited even longer). Those groups eventually said they were able to get a table across the street at a different restaurant and left. We decided to stick it out and give Greenwood American Bistro a shot.
We were eventually seated. The waitstaff for the remainder of the evening was perfectly nice, but service was slow.
I understand restaurants are often understaffed and get slammed. And I understand service can be slow sometimes. Bu please, just acknowledge the crowd of people waiting at the door, and let them know that you'll be right with them instead of ignoring them until they leave...
Atmosphere:
Overall atmosphere was pleasant. However, it feels like Greenwood American Bistro has a bit of an existential crisis. The atmosphere and the clientele skews more neighborhood/casual. The food tastes casual but is presented like a home cook trying too hard to plate/garnish like fine dining. And the menu is priced like high-end dining (e.g., please don't put beverage and wine menus in sticky plastic sleeves like Applebees, unless you're trying to be a neighborhood bar and grill - if so, the menu and pricing should reflect that).
Needless to say, I was disappointed by my experience. According to other reviews, lots of people seem to have had positive experiences. Maybe it was an off night.
