An Essential Guide to Eating Your Way Through Alberta | Eater

"The Banff Grizzly House is an institution. The Nordic, wood-clad restaurant has been warming up wilderness seekers with big pots of fondue — Swiss cheese-and-kirsch, bagna cauda, or Alberta beef — for nearly 60 years. Let your eyes wander over to the exotic game section. The restaurant is known for serving up hot rocks for grilling rattlesnake, wild boar, maritime lobster, and alligator, alongside a rotating cast of other rarely seen proteins." - Kate Dingwall

"Dining at the Grizzly House is an experience. As soon as you walk in, it's obvious the place hasn’t changed much since it first opened decades ago. The interior is dark, and the wood-paneled wall is lined with taxidermy trophies. But the novelty of cooking at your own table makes up for it all. The food ranges from decadently simple—cheese, oil, and chocolate fondues—to exotic, like rattlesnake or alligator meat. The only thing more novel than preparing your own food is the rumors of the restaurant’s history as a swingers' joint. Whether the stories are urban legend or not is hard to say, but telephones at each table that allow you to call any diner in the room seem to suggest there's some truth to the gossip."

I’ve walked past Grizzly House so many times while visiting Banff, and I’m really glad we finally decided to check it out! We went on a Saturday evening, and luckily we had a reservation, this place gets busy, and I can see why. The vibe is super quirky and fun. The whole restaurant kind of feels like a time capsule, with cool decor and music that totally adds to the experience. It’s not your typical dinner spot, and that’s what makes it special. We went for the fondue experience and got to try some really interesting meats we’d never had before, definitely a culinary adventure. Cooking everything right at the table made the meal feel interactive and memorable. The staff were awesome too—friendly, helpful, and super patient with all our questions. And I have to mention the chocolate fondue at the end… seriously, it was next-level delicious. If you're in Banff and want something different (and fun!), I’d absolutely recommend giving Grizzly House a try. It’s a great mix of tasty food, unique atmosphere, and genuinely great service. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in town!

The buffalo steak was really juicy, fresh, and tender. Nice staff, but the restaurant's atmosphere is not particularly enjoyable, as the entire facility and equipment are too old and worn out. From a cleanliness standpoint, it is below average. The air-conditioning system can't keep up with circulating the air, and the smell of oil permeates the entire space due to the fundo/Korean BBQ style cooking. All in all, the condition of the place prevents me from returning or recommending it, even though the food was good.

If you're ever in Banff, you'll have to stop by at least once. It has a very exotic interior with quirky characteristics, like phones at the tables so guests can talk with other tables (see your menu for numbers). This place is best for it's steaks and fun fondues that the family will enjoy.

We came to the restaurant as walk-in customers since all reservations were full, and luckily, we were able to get a seat on the patio after waiting only about 5 minutes in line. The food was quite good — the fondue experience was especially fun and worth trying. However, our experience with the service left a lot to be desired. While we understand it was a busy night, we noticed a lack of attentiveness from the staff, particularly from servers who were not directly assigned to our table. We politely asked for finished plates to be cleared because our table was getting full, but the request was ignored. Additionally, our soup and salad were forgotten and only served alongside our main dish. What also stood out was how the service felt inconsistent. We were already seated on the patio and eating our meal when it started to lightly drizzle. A different table was offered a spot inside. We understand there might have only been one table available — but it still felt unfair that no one else on the patio, including us, was offered the same. We had a mushroom fondue with hot oil, and the rainwater dripping into it made the situation uncomfortable and concerning. We hope this was just an off night and not a reflection of how guests are generally treated. Again, the food was enjoyable, but the service and atmosphere unfortunately impacted our overall experience. Suggesting to book a reservation! 🤍

It’s an icon in Banff and I’m glad we experienced it once. The food was generally okay but it was a great social experience for the family. The ambiance was nice but it was way darker than we expected - so prepare your eyes if you visit on a sunny day! Don’t expect to finish dinner in under 1 hour here, the whole process takes a while. Glad we made a reservation because it was super busy when we went (3pm)

This is somewhere I wanted to go so badly but my expectations weren’t met. We entered a very dark restaurant and sat waiting for our server for nearly 10 minutes. We eventually ordered the 4 course meal. The Caesar salad was good, exactly what you’d expect. The tortellini wasn’t bad just a little bland. The cheese was unique. Keep in mind that this is authentic Swiss fondue, not American fondue. As such, the cheese fondue was more sharp and alcoholic. It’s not for everyone but it grew on me and I actually ended up really enjoying it. The main was a wide array of exotic meats. There was only a little amount of each meat so it was literally about two bites of each. Cooking it was a nightmare and the oil was getting sprayed everywhere, all over the table and even on our clothes. The sauces were actually really good. The dessert was a small serving of chocolate along with some fruit. I appreciated that it was a lighter dessert. The service was slow but got better as the meal went on. What really irked me was the espresso martini. The cup was seriously half full and we even asked the server who said it was a measured pour. As much as I understand that piece, I wish they had served it in a smaller cup that fit the drink then because serving a half full cup is an abomination for a $13 beverage. Also, it was mediocre at best so that didn’t help either. Overall, the experience is worth doing, but don’t get your expectations too high and wear clothes you don’t care about.

A Must-Try in Banff! I’ve always passed by Grizzly House in Banff, and I’m so glad I finally got to try it! We went on a Saturday for lunch, and despite how popular the place is, we were accommodated right away. The experience was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. One of the highlights was getting to try exotic foods that we had never had before—it was such a unique and exciting culinary adventure. The restaurant itself feels like a museum, with an incredible atmosphere that adds to the overall charm. I also loved the music they played in the background. The service was outstanding. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel welcomed throughout our meal. Unfortunately, we didn’t have room for dessert because we were already full, but that just gives us another reason to come back next time! If you’re in Banff and looking for a one-of-a-kind dining experience, I highly recommend Grizzly House. Great food, amazing ambiance, and top-notch service—it’s definitely worth a visit!

Come here for the experience and not for the food. We got the dinner fondue and it took 2 hours for everything to be served! TL;DR: for the price and portion, you're better off going to a KBBQ or steakhouse Service is extremely slow. We walked in at 3pm and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. We got menus and water instantly but it took another 15 minutes to flag down a server to take our order. There was only one person managing our section so I think it's an issue of being understaffed. The food itself was a hit or miss. - The meat portions were very small (as pictured). The exotic meats tasted similar to beef and chicken (not very unique). - For the soup and salad - you'll either love it or hate it. The salad had mint in it, which I did not like. The chicken soup tasted like generic chicken soup - nothing much to comment. - The cheese fondue did have a heavy alcohol flavour and would have benefitted from some seasoning (they did provide some roasted garlic). - The best thing was the chocolate fondue. The chocolate was delicious...kind of like Gianduja flavour. The restaurant needs better ventilation. It was very smoky inside from the hot stones, which made our clothes smell. The oil/butter also coated the entire table and our faces.

Yelp
While casually strolling through the town of Banff, we came across this restaurant. We were looking to dine and celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The Grizzly House is a famous fondue serving restaurant and has been in business since 1967. The menu features Alberta beef, buffalo, chicken, rattlesnake, shark and wild game. We were so intrigued by all the choices. I walked in to inquire about eating here and saw a sign that reservations were recommended. I took a chance and asked the hostess if they could possibly fit us in. She reviewed the reservations and told me they could. We were seated at a nice table and ready to enjoy an interesting meal. When we sat down we noticed a phone on the wall. We asked out server what the phones were about. He explained that back in the 1970's, this was actually part restaurant and part discoteque. The phones were used to call table to table. I guess you could have called someone across the room and asked them to dance. Ha! Ha! Funny we noticed they still play music from the 1970's as well while you dine. We started with the Classic French Onion soup that had a Swiss cheese melted topping and a Caesars Salad. We moved onto the next dish which was the Cheese Fondue for two. Our server was so good to show us exactly how to eat the cheese and don't forget to scrape the bowl as he informed us this is the best part of the cheese fondue. For our main course, we ordered the Beef and Lobster fondue. It is interesting how they serve the meal. A very hot stone is placed on your table and they bring you the meat and fish. You cook it to your liking on the stone and then dip in the fondue sauces provided. Our dinner was delicious! We had so much fun trying the sauces. The Alberta beef was so very rich and tasty. The lobster was also so savory. Since we were celebrating, we went all out and ordered the chocolate fondue for dessert. Lip smacking it was! Lots of fruits to dip in the hot chocolate. Our server was truly the best. He was very attentive helpful and available whenever we needed him. When he served our dessert fondue, he brought out a sparkler to commemorate our anniversary. A very nice touch that we appreciated. Overall our experience here was five stars and from the moment we walked in to walking out the door.

Yelp
Had a wonderful dinner there tonight with my love. We each had the onion soup you start and then a full Monte four course fondue dinner. She had the beef and chicken and I had the 'Alberta fondue' choice which consisted of beef, bison, elk and venison. Added a couple of oz of ostrich meat. First course was the cheese fondue which was amazing! Then the main, followed by chocolate fondue with fruit. Everything was stellar. The atmosphere inside is great and the staff is very knowledgeable and super helpful explaining the whole experience before you get into it. The two of us were utterly satisfied and will be back ourselves and recommend it to anyone we know.

Yelp
Food: most ordered the fondue. Very small portions. Unseasoned meats, unseasoned oil. I ordered the ribeye, temperature was spot on, medium rare, mostly gristle and fat, roughly 1/2 edible, very plain seasoning. Should have sent it back but from the time we sat until entrees delivered was over, not exaggerating, over 1.5 hours. Noticed 3 other tables seated 15- 30 minutes after us were served first. No comparison to the melting pot chain in the US. On a positive note, the Rosti potato patty and vegetables were very good. Ambiance, very dimly lit. Waitstaff was so-so.

Yelp
If you're a fondu fan this is a good spot. The cheese reminded me of Switzerland and the the fondu there. Sadly I'm not a fondu person but I can appreciate the authenticity and the consistency of the the product served. Great experience with the grilling of the meat, along with the yummy bread, and dipping them in the melted cheese. It did get a bit Smokey in there so don't where clothes that you dont want to get Smokey. It's a Good spot for a date or a group. Not sure about a large party.

Yelp
Good thing we made reservations as that's what had priority. It's our first visit here. We thought to give it a try since people are hyping it up. We got the dinner fondue. My wife and I ordered soup for starter. It was good but it was a little on the salty side. We chose the cheese appetizer. Bread was stale and the cheese was so bland. Also, the cheese fondue was so bitter. The main course we had were chicken, beef and shrimp. Beef was good! Perhaps my favorite. We also enjoyed the chocolate fondue. It was just super dark. We can barely see our food and each other haha. Our server, Nick, was excellent tho. Overall, we think that price is too high. Would not necessarily keep coming back. It's just good to try.

Yelp
Such a great experience! The Complete Fondue Dinners are the way to go. Not too often do you get to have exotic meats like alligator and ostrich! The different courses were timed very well and service was great. Would recommend upgrading to the French Onion Soup for a couple dollars more for the starter. Also, if you like Caesar cocktails they make a great one here.

Yelp
Disappointing Experience at The Grizzly House I wouldn't recommend The Grizzly House to anyone. We came in excited for fondue and some meat and asked our server for recommendations. She suggested the Hunter Fondue Bourguignonne. But don't be misled by the word "fondue" - there's no fondue involved. Instead, we were given tough, sinewy meat with some sauces. We didn't even overcook it; the quality was simply poor. And if you're expecting bread to come with your meal, think again - it's an extra $5 for four dry pieces. When we asked why there was no fondue with the dish, the server casually told us it wasn't included. Maybe there was a miscommunication since we're tourists, so we decided to order a separate fondue appetizer for $36. Unfortunately, the cheese was bitter, and when we mentioned it to the staff, there wasn't an ounce of empathy, nor were we offered any alternatives. The manager was firm on their no replacement or refund policy, which added to the disappointment. For what was essentially a lackluster meal and poor service, the bill came to $99 - far too pricey for the experience we had. If you're considering dining here, I'd advise you to keep walking.

Yelp
Without a doubt, Grizzly House is the best fondue restaurant I've ever been to - and I've been to quite a few, all over the world. They've been open since 1967, and are still doing things the same way - the right way. The flavors, ambiance, and service were all completely on point. We got the mushroom appetizer, which had many awesome different stuffings you could fill the mushroom with before dipping it in batter and frying in oil. We also got the cheese fondue, which had a delicious wine and Gruyere cheese combination. The flavor was strong, sharp, and totally delicious. The portion sizes were just right and significantly larger than other similar restaurants I've been to. They also had a hot rock option for the meat and seafood that we ordered. We tried this out, and it was awesome with the garlic butter frying up the pieces of meat, shrimp, and lobster tail fresh. Winding everything up for dessert was the chocolate fondue, which they served special because we had a birthday in the party. The chocolate was just awesome and was not super sugary sweet like a lot of chocolates you get. It had a right balance between savory and sweet that made it really irresistible. Our server had a very friendly and upbeat attitude, and was very helpful in explaining the different types of cooking options, and how to use all of the implements. The decor of the restaurant was a hand carved wooden theme that really looked like it was straight out of the late 60s in early 1970s. The old-school feel only added to the awesome environment. I heard other people talking about how they drove several hours just to come to this restaurant, and after the meal we clearly understood why. Five stars easily, and I would give it to six if I could. Highly recommended.!

Yelp
My husband and I are only in Banff for 2 days and wanted to try something different. We stumbled upon this place on accident and we are SO glad we did. The food was spectacular. We sat outside on the patio and got to people watch and enjoy the views of the mountains. The cheese + bread was amazing, and the soup was fantastic. Cooking your own meet in the oil was a fun experience and super tasty. Our waiter Billy was so helpful in explaining all options and suggesting good things for us to try. We chose to do the traditional fondue (oil in a pot) instead of hot rocks. We ate the Hunter Fondue (Venison, beef, and Wild Boar) + the exotic fondue (Alligator, Rattlesnake, Ostrich, Frogs Legs, Buffalo, Venison and Daily Exotic Fish) Thank you Billy for being so great! 10/10. It was probably the best dinner we have ever had. We both left so happy that we ended up there. Don't hesitate to try this place!

Yelp
My wife and I last ate at the Grizzly House in 1998 during our honeymoon. 25 years later we visited again! The place was just like we remembered it (phones on the wall to call other tables in the restaurant, darkly lit dining areas and the smell of fondue). We had a very attentive and friendly server who took great care of us. My wife ordered the beef and chicken fondue meal while I got the beef and scallop meal. This is a four course meal with salad or soup, cheese fondue with bread cubes, entrees and then a chocolate fondue with various fruits. You can choose between oil (canola) or a 600 degree hot rock. We opted for the hot rock to cook our meat. The sauces and meats were good. I probably enjoyed the cheese fondue appetizer the most while my wife loved the chocolate fondue. It was really nice to re-visit the Grizzly House. We left quite full and ready to take on the Banff National Park.

Yelp
dim lighting. reservations recommended. we got the exotic dinner which came with four courses, left us full. an incredibly interesting experience unique to banff. super friendly service, although it is somewhat slow. be prepared for a 2 hour meal. obviously some meats (kangaroo, for instance) weren't the best tasting, but it was worth the experiential factor
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch after going to the gondola. We each ordered a burger. They were extremely over cooked. The potatoes are actually just hashbrowns completely devoid of any flavor. I'm really disappointed we wasted our time here. We sat inside and it was so dark I had to use the flashlight on my phone to read the menu. Keep I mind this was at 1100 am. The 2 stars I've given them is purely for the service. Our waitress was amazing as was the host that sat us.

Natalie S.

Yelp
Very smoky, dark, and loud inside. The cheese fondue only comes with bread (no vegetables, potatoes, nothing). We spent a lot of money for a small plate of meat for our entree. We had originally planned to order dessert, but it was so smoky we had to leave! The cheese fondue tasted good, but not much to it but bread and cheese. I will say, fantastic service. Everyone we spoke to was incredibly friendly.

Yelp
The food was amazing, service was good and had good selection of items on menu. Spicy tofu and Almond cake were my favorite.

Yelp
What a fun and perfect spot for dinner in Banff! It is incredibly popular so would 100% try to get a reservation. Their patio is first come first serve, we waited 40 minutes for a table but got a drink while waiting. The fondue four course meal is a phenomenal deal and the steak and lobster was fabulous! The chocolate fondue was the only part we didn't love, never got that warm on the flame
google avatar

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
Super duper overpriced for the portion size. We had to order a side steak. Super mid food
google avatar

Cyrille B.

Yelp
Enjoyed a variety of different entrees and appetizers. The different tartars were complimented well by the toasted bread. We also had the 4 course meat fondue, and we chose beef, lobster, and scallops as the meats. The overall experience of cooking the meat on a hot stone was fun!
google avatar

Yelp
We were so lucky to be able to be seated on a walk-in basis and the servers are so friendly in assisting you in your choices! Everything was amazing! We opted for a appetizer and chocolate and we could not of picked a better lunch combo! It was the perfect amount for two and when I tell you we like cheese, WE LOVE CHEESE, and it was enough! The ambiance was very country and service so friendly. Again dessert that was the perfect amount as we rolled out stuffed to the brim and ready to walk the Ave! Thank you Grizzly House for an awesome experience. I hope to come back here one day for dinner!

Lori H.

Yelp
It smells so good when you enter which is why we made reservations. We were 1 hour early and as they have no bar area we were happy they were able to seat us. It was very dark, very noisy. We needed to use our flashlights to read the menu. Great service. Very helpful. We shared a ribeye and ordered numerous sides. The steak was good but we do better ourselves. ALL of the sides were room temperature. Overall, not impressed. And it was quite Smokey from other tables cooking their food. We would not go back.

Yelp
The Grizzly House popped up as a must-try when traveling to Banff, best known for their stone block fondue grills and exotic meats. I made a reservation in advance and was promptly seated the minute I got there. My first impression is that this place is definitely busy, and not to my surprise, the service here was just okay. It takes forever to get the attention of your server, to the point where my boyfriend and I made bets on whether or not we would get the bill before 7 pm (it was 6:30 pm when we made the bet.. lol) But to much of my surprise, once you get their attention, everything comes out super quick. Now to the food. I was excited to try some exotic meats just because how often do you get to eat snake, ostrich, bison, etc? Here you do! However, I very soon found out that the exotic meat wasn't anything special and hard to differentiate. Grilling on a hot stone was fun though. Bonus, we also ordered drinks and they were heavy on the juices, not on the alcohol. I would definitely recommend this place for the experience, but not so much for the actual food or service.

Yelp
Cool experience. Variety of game meats with fondue. It's an experience really. Something that you probably only can get in banff since I haven't seen any restaurants like this anywhere else in canada. I always enjoy elk. Not a fan of other things but it's fun to try. Go with a group since it's very pricey and you can try it. The fondue is a bit much for just 2 people. The grizzly bear statue out front is always a nice photo op. It's a cool place if you want a unique experience since it's been there forever (since I was a kid) and it's probably one of the oldest restaurants in all of banff Town!
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
We came here all for the experience of doing the 3-course fondue. But was it worth it? I don't think so. The food was just okay. The serving size is not that much too for the price. And we had a not-so-great experience with our server. Very dismissive and inattentive. The only time he lightened up a little was when it was time for us to pay the bill and give a tip. The ambiance was okay although from where they sat us, it was too dark.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
the whole experience at this place felt like work. I ordered a Caesar salad and ask for chicken on it but was told I'd have to cook it on a hot stone myself? I also got steak tar tar and was given a bunch of seasonings to add myself (hot sauce, mustard, worechestershire, tereyaki). I order things in a restaurant because I don't want to have to make them myself. If I did I'd stay home.

Yelp
3.5/5 I believe you go to Grizzly House for the fondue experience rather than the food. My friends and I made a reservation for 5:30 pm on a Sunday and were happy to have been seated in a little sectioned off area (which we really liked). It is pretty dark inside the restaurant, so your eyes need to adjust when you're entering and leaving the restaurant. We each ordered the Original Fondue dinner. Our server recommended dipping the bread into the soup broth first and then into the cheese fondue and it was honestly game changing! It was my favorite out of the four courses. Everything else was okay. The beef and chicken didn't blow my mind and I also had the same feeling about the chocolate fondue. It was fun to cook our meat on the stone slab, but that's about it. Besides the food and ambiance, the service was great! Our server had great recommendations for how to eat the fondue and she even gave us recommendations for things to do in the area. Again, I'd come here if you would like the fondue experience, but I wouldn't expect much from the actual food.

Yelp
We ordered beef and lobster combo, hunter , and exotic. Horrible food!!! 1. The amount is too small. The beef and lobster combo which price is $59 , has only two pieces of beef and two pieces of very thin sliced lobster . We had to confirm with the waiter where our beef was. 2. We were told to cook the meat each side for several minutes, the time were all different. We have to watch the clock ? They mixed the meat together, no one can remember what are they. The meat were cut in different shapes. It's hard to cook evenly. Some meat was raw after long cooking. 3. We are three people, but they only give us one piece of hot rock for cooking. My son only eat beef and lobster, he felt bad because he must have eaten some of strange meat from my order. They are huddled together, and the room was so dark. It was such a small piece of rock, the meat kept falling out of it. So dirty. We had very nice dinner in Banff last night. We wanted to try another restaurant, we chose grizzly house. It was a big mistake. We will never come back. Don't be fool by the restaurant.

Yelp
Came for the fondue experience only, which is what this review is based on. Our server Dave was very pleasant and attentive. We were never lacking anything to complete our meal. The salad and soup appetizers were good and fresh. The additional apps we ordered were not great - the escargot is buried in a small pot of mushroom. We were expecting them whole in-shell. The raclette was dry and was less about cheese, but rather tasted like a breakfast hash brown. The fondue courses were fun and engaging. Love the scrape of the caramelized cheese after that course - best part! The meats were good, but we expected more per serving. We elected the hot stones, which have to be constantly slathered with garlic butter. Don't expect this to be a calorie-friendly meal! Finished off with the chocolate fondue. We were certainly full when we left.

Yelp
Here goes - - - Negatives: Cleanliness of tables, cutlery and menu was questionable. Only thing offered for cheese fondue course was bread, only fruit offered with chocolate fondue course. Chocolate watered down so much it didn't stick to fruit. Terrible wine selection. We are in Banff for heaven's sake. Positives: Server was outstanding. Protein cooked on stone with butter and garlic a great suggestion by server. If it wasn't for the server, I'd rate this place 1.

Yelp
Although the food was mostly decent in my opinion, I'd give Grizzly House a 4 for the unique experience I'd definitely recommend to anyone visiting Banff. Walking in, you're hit with a rowdy, dimly lit cabin feeling. Although it's loud, the experience feels very intimate. It was our first time enjoying fondue and we opted for the complete fondue for ease in ordering. The soup was quite tasty and our favorite was definitely the vegetable fondue appetizer and dessert fondue. The main course, a meat hot stone, wasn't that impressive given I eat kbbq quite regularly and I found the chunks of meat kind of tasteless even with the sauce. One review mentioned only receiving fruit and thin chocolate for the desert fondue but that wasn't our experience at all as we also received wafers and the chocolate was the perfect consistency. My only qualm is I wish they had darker chocolate, rather then a milky chocolate. The service was great, refilling our water and checking in regularly. It was fun to try the exotic meats (even though most of them tasted like beef tbh haha). Make sure you're wearing something you're ok with getting really smelly. The ventilation is quite poor and you can feel the grease on the wooden floors in the main dining area.

Yelp
Not really sure what all the positive reviews are about... The experience? Hardly. It was loud, it was dark (too dark to see the quality of the meat -- was that by design?), it was smoky (and the smell stays on clothes for days). The service? Please. Nothing but rehearsed phrases. Actually, the service was downright unacceptable for a $$$ restaurant -- zero rapport-making, nil enthusiasm, and half the time not even audible above the background noise. The food? The worst we had in Banff. The "soup of the moment" was a salty French onion, the only redeeming quality to which was the rim of crusted cheese. The Neuchatel fondue was not our thing (I would've preferred a straight cheese fondue), and the bread it came with was...cheap. The main course was a flat rip-off. 4 pieces of chicken & 3 of beef in my husband's Original Fondue -- hardly worth $49 even with the other 3 courses. I did get the Exotic -- which selection doesn't even make sense for Banff -- consisting of 2 bites each of alligator, kangaroo (they didn't even have their signature rattlesnake!), ostrich, buffalo, venison, and mahi mahi, plus 1 single scrawny frog leg. That for $66...! The Toblerone fondue for dessert was honestly the best part of the meal, which is awfully sad considering I could do it with better fruit at home. Needless to say, the "uniqueness" of the place did not make up for any of the above. Sadly, what I imagined would be a special birthday dinner for the hubby ended up making him the total opposite of pleased. And the restaurant's "birthday special" was nothing but a sparkler stuck on a piece of strawberry with the dessert fondue -- which burnt out before I could even take a photo. In summary, those exotic meats aren't worth it -- don't be yet another victim of this overrated place.

Yelp
Love love love this restaurant and is a MUST if you are visiting Banff. They offer a lot of options and the food is simply amazing. It is a bit on the expensive side, but worth it. Plus, the portions are perfect so nothing (or barely anything) goes to waste. Will definitely be back !

Yelp
We were looking for cheese fondue spot since we never had it before and this spot kept popping up everywhere we looked. Once you step foot inside it feels like your transported to a cozy cabin. Luckily we just walked in and were seated right away We only opted for the cheese fondue for two. Silly us we thought we were going to be served wine with the fondue but turns out they just mix it in the cheese. We opted for apple juice instead. Doh. The cheese was a bit sweet probably due to the apple juice and the bread was just bread. Also there was a phone on the wall next to our table, super random! Overall, I wouldn't come back. Maybe I needed to try other things, but for cheese fondue alone I'll pass.

Yelp
The Alberta - Beef, Buffalo, Elk, Venison with mushrooms and potatoes. Opted for the pale ale over wine. Thank you Ashley for excellent recommendations. Made the meal complete with Maple Parfait and cappuccino. Great experience, very busy, so thankful for fitting me in without reservation. - From Texas

Yelp
When traveling to Banff (despite what every blog says), do NOT heed advice that suggests you should dine at the Grizzly House! Regrettably, our experience was marred by a multitude of unsettling factors. To begin, the service was abysmal. Dinner lasted 3 hours in total. Not to mention, the waitress was seemingly passive aggressive and patronizing while we inquired about the menu. The presence of oil was pervasive--from the food to the furniture (and now our clothes and hair), it was like dining in a deep fryer. The restaurant's darkness seemed to obscure the filth that undoubtedly surrounded us--cue the handling of raw meats at the table, and it felt like a biohazard waiting to happen. In light of our experience and feeling bamboozled after reading such pleasant reviews from blogs/bloggers, we're compelled to caution travelers against dining here!

Yelp
I feel like the town of Banff tried to really dig into its Swiss roots here with all the fondue but unfortunately came up short. For starters, be prepared to be in for a very strange place if you come here. The food, of course, exhibits a wide variety of exotic meats like Kangaroo, Rattlesnake, Ostritch, etc. And accordingly, the pricing is quite expensive. ~$50+ per person for an order of fondue. Essentially they come out and grill the meat at the table for you which you then dip in the fondue. There is a small outdoor seating area with around 10 tables. Otherwise the inside is ... terrible. It's so dark you can barely see - I wonder if the place ever gets cleaned. It gives the feel of a serial killer's home with the extremely dark sort of red/yellow lighting. The air also felt stuffy and had a strange smell likely caused by all the exotic meats regularly being cooked there. It was not a comfortable ambiance by any means. The food is also .... eh. We stopped by for a light meal just to try things out and got the Fondue Neuchatel Dinner ($30 per person). This includes fondue with bread and vegetables and a salad or soup. The salad was light, fresh but very simple. The fondue was pretty lacking (although better than Ticino's). A mild flour taste that was distracting and the wine/kirsh didn't really bring out too much of the cheese flavors. The bread was also pretty poor - something you'd see at a low quality bakery section of a grocery store - no flavor. I'm almost tempted to say that the best thing we had were the raw vegetables that came with the fondue. Service is alright. A little rough around the edges.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The atmosphere was extremely interesting. The service was above and beyond. It is a must see in Banff.

Yelp
Great ambience if you like rustic and a couple mounts on the wall. Pick up a phone and call your neighbor. Friendly staff on the move. This place is busy. The food was delicious and of course the Alberta game and exotics were delicious.

Yelp
We had such a great dinner! They were so nice. They food was fantastic. We hadn't had fondue in years and they politely walked us through everything. I highly recommend!

Yelp
food was not good & not worth it. also, midway through the meal, the staff was bringing through a huge trash can, squeezing it through my table & the back of the chairs of the next. i lost my appetite at this point. never coming back here.

Yelp
We went here bc of the high reviews. However, we ordered their premier signature dishes for appetizers, main and dessert. All three were horrible. Grease, bottom tier cuts of meat, slow and terrible waitress. It was a truly horrible experience. Everything was dirty. Even the restaurant itself is dirty, cobwebs, greasy dirty ceiling tiles down to the floor. In my 65 years this was the absolute worst dining experience I've ever had and I'm not exaggerating. It is repulsive.

Yelp
The server was condescending, gruff, and unhelpful. The food was the worst any member of our group had consumed in years (steak had no taste; chicken was bland), and three of us left feeling nauseous. The food is borderline inedible, causing us to DoorDash from another restaurant while we were eating! The ambiance was the lone bright spot -- it was a fun themed restaurant that looked like something out of Disney. Some people hype this restaurant as a key place to visit in Banff, but you are better off avoiding it!

Yelp
Always a favorite tradition when coming to Banff! You can't miss this place! The many options for traditional fondue have gone out the window and this place offers a variety of different local and exotic plates to treat everyone's wild side. I had the Alberta plate, which consisted of beef, bison, elk, and venison. All of which were great. My boyfriend had the exotic plate, which had alligator, kangaroo, frog legs, venison, bison, ostrich, and tuna! Surprisingly, his favorite was the ostrich, but I liked the kangaroo. You also get a starter soup or salad, a cheese or vegetable fondue appetizer, and a chocolate fondue for dessert!! Don't be rushed here. It's an all night affair. Also, learn the history about the phones at each table and in the bathrooms to have a bit of fun and trickery!

Yelp
So much fun! I took my teen because they have never had a fondue dinner and we really enjoyed it. Our waiter was helpful, fun, and friendly and shared some fun facts about the history of the restaurant :) We got the four course dinner and I got the house salad, and the Hunter option with duck, buffalo, and elk. They were all delicious and it's just the right amount, especially after eating cheese fondue. I need to mention that I'm gluten free and our waiter was knowledgable and brought my child a large spoon to dip use to pour the cheese over their bread so it didn't contaminate the fondue. I brought my own bread from a place in town called Wild Flour. After I had a bit of the fondue I let my kid have the rest so they could have the fondue dipping experience, especially since we chose the hot plates to cook our meats. Our waiter also knew exactly which sauces I could have with my meats. I can't tell you how wonderful that is for someone like me. It truly makes the night 10x more enjoyable. My teen got French onion soup and the Exotic meats and was so happy with it. We both decided that the kangaroo was the best. For me the elk was second and then the buffalo. My teen said the tuna was spectacular. I'm not a huge chocolate fan and I rarely like it with fruit but it was delectable! The waiter also brought the non-gf cookies on the side but we were so stuffed my teen didn't even touch them. Overall it was a wonderful dinner and experience and I'm so glad we did it. It's definitely worth the money.

Yelp
Right on the downtown Banff strip, you'll find Grizzly House! My sister and I had just canoeed on Lake Louise and were headed to a horseback riding experience, but in desperate need of some quick food. Grizzly House seemed to be busy the night before so we stopped in for lunch. Our waitress was incredible and worked with our quick time crunch! We got two caesar salads and a french onion soup to split. The French onion soup was the best that I've had since a trip to Manhattan two years ago. The service was quick, the water stayed flowing, and we were happy girls!! From a glance at the menu, it looks like the main attraction at Grizzly House is fondue. I even noticed interesting variations like rattlesnake fondue - would definitely give this adventurous menu a try if I had more time.

Yelp
Another great restaurant we went to when in Banff! We just got done with a long hike and stumbled upon the Grizzly House. Right away they greeted us with smiles, but I have to say our server Billy was amazing! Not only was he very kind, but he also told hilarious jokes! Dinner and a show? .... We think yes The steak tartare was very good, although we wished it had more texture than completely ground. The French onion soup was amazing, no critiques there! And our seafood dinner platter was amazing as well! We just wished we had more to eat!!! Overall a great place to relax and have a nice dinner with friends and loved ones! If you come here, request to have Billy as your server you won't regret it! Dan & Lexi

Yelp
Awesome French onion soup. Cheese fondue was delicious , great flavor. Meats for entree were subpar (wagyu, and scallop and beef)

Yelp
The outside looks small, but the restaurant was huge. As you walk by you can smell the meats grilling inside. We had heard from others to try this place out and we had a wonderful experience. Our group of four decided to share everything and chose one option each from their complete fondue dinner menu. It was a fun experience to have. The food was nothing too special outside of eating elk and boar, but it was a satisfying dinner to have.

Yelp
Just wow. This restaurant was quite an experience. The food was amazing. My friends and I weren't brave enough to try the exotic meats but the traditional meat, cheese and dessert family style meal was delicious. It was lovely to take our time and cook our own food. I also loved that this restaurant used to be a swingers bar and still have all the old working phones hung up around the restaurant. Definitely ask your servers about the history. They're more than willing to answer your questions. I would highly recommend checking out the grizzly house. You'll also need to call ahead for reservations!
