On the Grid : The Little Chartroom

"It was always Shaun and his wife (the head chef) Roberta's dream to open a restaurant. Their experience in fine dining is the backbone of this more laid back bistro. It’s the sort of place they’d like to eat on their days off. The decor is stripped back, a royal blue runs through the space accented by nautical features and crisp white wood paneling. If you’re lucky, you can grab a space at the bar overlooking the kitchen pass. In his own words “it never fails to amaze me how many times people come into the restaurant and know people at other tables”, emphasising its local appeal. A great addition to Leith’s burgeoning local food scene." - fourcolourblack

The Little Chartroom

"The buzz at this popular restaurant is addictive. Grab a drink in the chilled-out bar before finding a spot in the modern, pared-back dining room; the seats at the counter are the ones to go for. Original dishes have deep, bold, yet delicately balanced flavours, and are inspired by the local larder." - Michelin Inspector

The Best Restaurants at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022 | Where to Eat | Eater London

"One of Edinburgh’s best new restaurants is on the walk out to Leith, in a tiny, blue room. Dinner is a starters, mains, desserts structure, so a good bet for anyone not enamoured with small plates, and the food is of that quietly brilliant kind that weighs its cleverness with nourishment. Dishes might include an exquisitely wan and green cucumber gazpacho with white asparagus, or a sea trout dish with brown shrimp and butter that gets its surprise from smoked aubergine. Book, and early." - James Hansen

20 Best Restaurants in Edinburgh | Condé Nast Traveler

"A wee neighborhood bistro located on Albert Place, at the top of Edinburgh’s Leith Walk, The Little Chartroom is run by husband-and-wife team Shaun McCarron and Roberta Hall-McCarron (formerly the head chef at Castle Terrace). Small and welcoming, with navy fabrics and handsome art, the restaurant has been garnering rave reviews and buzz since it opened n 2018. The food, French-British cuisine, is highly seasonal. The Little Chartroom takes simple dishes and adds Scottish twists here and there; for instance, a sausage roll enlivened by haggis and mustard dip. Lunch and dinner are fishy, meaty affairs, with menu items that range from mackerel ceviche to game broth to plenty of vegetables, too. Pudding could be a hearty malt loaf or an apple and ginger cake. The epic brunch promises everything you could hope for, including smoked fish kedgeree with poached eggs and almonds." - Caroline Eden

I was there last Friday, and the food was exceptional! I hadn’t been back in a year, and the freshness in ingredients and innovation in the dishes was still present. I went for the set lunch menu. Duck was cooked to perfection! Oysters’ carrot kimchi sauce was a highlight. The blonde waiter was very nice to me. He took time to explain the dishes and seemed happy to be doing his job. At some point, his colleague took over and she made me feel very unwelcomed. She did not explain any of the dishes, and made it obvious that my presence was a nuisance to her day. Highly recommend for the food! It’s very obvious that the people working in the kitchen are passionate about what they do, beautiful work!

Had the pleasure of being dining here last night. Food was incredible. Sat at the counter and watched Roberta and her team work their magic. Artichoke pudding blew me away. Thank you for an incredible evening.

What a great little gem! Brilliant food, full of flavor and very high quality ingredients. We particularly enjoyed the fish dishes, but everything was great. I would also strongly advise to try their cocktails, their signature negroni was to die for!

Very lovely little restaurant, with excellent staff, a wonderful ambience and beautiful food. We had the 3 course dinner, sitting by the kitchen bar, which was very enjoyable watching the chefs prepare our food. Between the two of us, we were able to try each meat/seafood option, with the monkfish probably as our favourite. Would highly recommend as a special experience.

We arrived to a cosy warm restaurant which everyone in our party of eight really appreciated. Our table was great with comfortable banquette seating. Being a large party, we more or less had everything on the menu, and everyone was buzzing. It was delicious in the truest sense of the word. One party member was gluten-free only and the restaurant did a marvellous job of accommodating her. Often, higher end restaurants can't quite support certain diets, but TLC bent over backwards and it was so appreciated; thank you! I'd recommend this beautiful restaurant to anyone and everyone.

A truly magnificent lunch today at the Little Chartroom .We opted for the set lunch and loved every bit of it,we tucked into Caramelised onion custard which was sublime, followed by Chalk stream trout and St brides guinea fowl. A lovely cheese course of Cashel blue paired with nectarine tarte tatin and honey. Finally our dessert was blood peach mousse which again was absolutely delicious. The sommelier talked us through the paired wines on each course which was so interesting to hear. A definite recommendation for anyone who is looking for a meal of exceptional quality at very affordable prices.

A great experience at The Little Chartroom. Had never been before and was not disappointed. For me the highlights were definitely the lamb saddle and the oysters. The oysters were so fresh, and almost creamy... could've eaten about 20 of them! The lamb was also perfectly cooked, and just delicious with a subtle blend of flavours that really allowed the lamb to shine - highly recommend! The venue itself was finished to a really high standard and gave a very sophisticated almost Scandinavian vibe. There wasn't too many other customers when we went and the staff were fantastic. Making sure we had everything we needed, being prompt cleaning up finished dishes. Will definitely be back!

Wonderful, small, cozy restaurant serving modern, elevated dishes with fresh ingredients. Three course set menu option (5 course option also available). Wine pairing also available. Particularly enjoyed the partridge main dish. Service is top notch. Classy, charming, helpful. Really top marks for all the staff. Cocktails offered, as well as a rather quirky wine selection. The place is quite small, only a few tables available. So you must book ahead. Very warm and cozy interior, with modern design. A very enjoyable dinner. Will return!
