Deeply Disappointed by Disturbing Experience at The Mission - North Park
Dear Mission Team,
I'm writing with a heavy heart as a longtime regular and supporter of The Mission in North Park. For over a decade, I've loved and celebrated your food, your staff, and the welcoming environment that has always made your restaurant feel like a second home. Even after moving up to North County, I've made special trips down just to dine here--like I did this past Friday, July 11th, for a long-anticipated lunch with a friend.
What I witnessed during this visit was not just disappointing--it was deeply upsetting, and it has shaken the trust and love I've had for this establishment.
At around 11:00 a.m., while the restaurant was quite busy, a large man sat at the bar wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with "Trump" and two raised middle fingers. This already struck a jarring note in what has always been a safe, inclusive space. But what followed was far more disturbing. A man who appeared to be the manager was catering to this individual while other guests and staff worked around them. I then heard this same man yell what I can only describe as a deeply offensive and inappropriate comment to one of your Hispanic staff members--"speak English and something along the lines of "we're gonna call ICE on you" and "send you to alligator island."
I have no idea what context this was said in, but let me be clear: there is no acceptable context for language like that. To hear that kind of threatening, dehumanizing rhetoric in your space--toward a visibly uncomfortable staff member who has been a familiar face for years--was beyond disheartening. It was grotesque.
The atmosphere was tense, the staff looked distressed, and I completely lost my appetite. My friend and I ended our meal early, stunned and heartbroken. This is not the Mission I've known and loved. This is not the place that has stood as a beacon of diversity, care, and warmth.
To experience this level of disregard for your community --and for the inclusive values The Mission has long stood for--was more than a disappointment. It felt like a betrayal.
As of now, I no longer feel comfortable returning or recommending your restaurant, I truly hope that this behavior will be addressed, and that your staff feel safe and respected. My hope in writing this that the values you once stood for have not been abandoned.
