How to Spend 24 Hours Dining and Drinking in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"A Broadway sandwich shop from chef Page Pressley that elevates lunchtime with house‑baked focaccia and imaginative combinations—the Parisian (white asparagus, truffle honey, Parmesan, arugula, black pepper custard), the Chronicle (roasted beet root cream cheese, dressed beet, hazelnuts, sprouts), and the Gazzette (stracciatella, mortadella, seasonal fruit, pistachio butter)—set in a contemporary interior of sleek marble and blond wood, with an attached vintage store for browsing while you wait." - Brandon Watson

Best New Restaurants in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"Former Austin chef Page Pressley and partner Dez Rodriguez lead this journalism-themed sandwich shop on the bustling Broadway corridor. The light offerings include salads, bowls, pastries, and toast, but the focaccia is king. Order it stuffed with hatch chile pimento cheese, braised Texas Angus beef, or a farm egg salad. While waiting, spend a few moments browsing the deli’s attached vintage shop, aptly named Obituaries. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Brandon Watson

Been looking forward to coming here for a while and it did not disappoint! I’m super jealous of everyone who works in that Jefferson bank building because I’d be there everyday haha. I loved their really unique selection of drinks and especially enjoyed that they had jasmine tea. The jasmine cream soda was delicious. For food I had the tribune which was sooo good. They def didn’t skimp on the portions. The meat was super tender and everything worked really well together. It’s a messy experience but worth it.

Visited for the first time—such a charming spot with a great vibe and aesthetic. We ordered a cappuccino and an iced caramel latte. Service was fast, and both drinks were excellent. The cappuccino was outstanding, and the caramel latte (ordered half sweet) was perfectly balanced. The coffee was smooth and flavorful without any bitterness. Prices are a bit on the higher side, but given the location, it’s totally justifiable—and definitely worth it.

I love the chill vibe here. I parked in the building's parking garage and the cashier was able to explain how to validate my ticket so it was free. I had a delicious oat milk lavender latte. My friend tried some food and she enjoyed it. Even when it's partly full of people, it really didn't get loud, which I appreciated.

Google
Absolutely love this little coffee shop/Newstand! Their coffee cake is chef’s kiss and pairs perfectly with a cozy cup of coffee. It’s my go-to spot, great location, amazing vibe, and perfect whether I'm studying solo or catching up with friends. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area!

Google
I am a frequent flyer and a huge fan of Dez and Page. Page is a genuinely amazing certified chef, and I have loved all the sandwich collabs with Curry Bros, the surprise quiche weekend, and that sea salt on the chocolate chip cookie. I have gluten sensitivity, but can eat (within moderation) the Barton springs mill flour. For me, this is game changing, like discovering a diamond in the rough. I’ve been aiming next to go to the disco mornings. Proud Mary coffee also was an instant love. I’m such a pour over girlie and I have found my match! Dez is the best and brings so much fun energy to the coffee shop. She genuinely cares about people and I am writing this to hopefully brighten up her Monday! I genuinely feel better after leaving here.

Google
The coffee was delicious and full of flavor! I also tried the egg sandwich — it was so rich with eggs and the bread was incredibly tasty. The atmosphere of the place is lovely, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a great spot to relax and enjoy a good meal!

Google
Love! I had a cold brew that was so tasty and my sister got a pink latte that was both delicious and so cute! The bagels were delicious and warm and the service was friendly and quick! The prices were very fair and we will be back!

Google
Since the building is being renovated it was hard to find, not going to lie. The inside is cute but small. The staff were great, they helped and explained everything. The cinnamon roll was very tasty 😋 and large portion. The coffee was really good I had the “paper route” I had some of my friends avocado toast, it was really good.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere and service. Marco was so helpful when I couldn't come to a decision! The Newstand has the best matcha latte ever. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Don't let the scaffolding outside fool you! We have been to the Newstand a few times and each time has been excellent. The service is quick, the staff is friendly and helpful, and everything they make is intentional and high quality. Even the paper bags they use for to-go orders are both aesthetically pleasing and practical. The prices can seem a bit high ($12 for a breakfast sandwich) BUT the amount and quality of the food you get is well worth the price. Also, their hours make it an accessible treat for those of us who don't work a traditional 9-5. 10/10 would definitely recommend

Yelp
This is an very expensive latte. A 12oz latte with oat milk and an extra shot is $10!!!. And I it take me to the moon and back. It is not worth the money. For people who thinks a $10 oat latte was an extra shot not expensive, feel free to pay it, but I would not go back.

Yelp
The food was amazing! You can tell the ingredients are super fresh and everything we ordered was delicious Coffee was great too! The only negative was the construction happening around the building which made it a little difficult to find the entrance
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was nice inside. Menu was a lil different than what I am use to, but food came out good. Prices are higher than similar places. Great vibe...very upscale. Setting felt like you were in NYC.

Yelp
Here's your Newstand is a fantastic spot for comfort food, baked goods, and coffee in a laid-back setting. I tried the Times sandwich and an Americano coffee during my visit, and both were excellent. The Times sandwich was packed with flavor--a perfect balance of meats like salami, mortadella, and capicola, combined with fresh iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion, and provolone. The Duke's mayo and oil and vinegar tied everything together beautifully. The bread deserves a special mention--it was homemade, fresh, and absolutely delicious, elevating the whole sandwich. The Americano was smooth, strong, and exactly what I needed to accompany the meal. Their coffee clearly lives up to the same high standard as their food. The restaurant has a laid-back and clean vibe, making it a comfortable spot to enjoy a casual meal or coffee break. The friendly and helpful waitstaff added to the positive experience. With such an appealing menu, I'm already looking forward to returning to explore more of their offerings.

Yelp
I went back today for breakfast after my workout and all I can say is WOW. The Almanac Hash was absolutely delicious! And I made sure to let them know. Added a hot matcha with a splash of oat milk. The best

Yelp
The sticky bun was so delicious and dreamy. The drinks were top notch and made with love. The salmon bagel and thick onions which was the only call out otherwise 10/10 flavor! The breakfast sandwich half way through had a very overwhelming salt taste. However the bread was so fluffy and buttery so loved that. The place was a packed and a little busy but the staff was super friendly and helped clean off tables quick. Music playing in there was nice and there's free WiFi to study here if needed.

Yelp
We visited for the first time today! The ambiance is great and I would say the staff are nice and patient. The food was super yummy, we also got the yogurt bowl which was great. I had "the tribute" which I really enjoyed along with my one year old! This place does not seem toddler friendly but they are! They had a booster seat with a buckle stashed away! You just have to ask them for it.

Yelp
The outside of the building has scaffolding. It almost doesn't look like a functional business! The scaffolding makes it seem like we were in New York. There is only street parking available. We parked a few blocks over next to an apartment complex. We got a latte with sticky bunz syrup and a latte with pink syrup. Each drink was around $9, which is pretty expensive relative to other San Antonio coffee spots. The server described the pink syrup as rose and pomegranate. It was delicious! The rose did not taste like a perfume. The inside decor is retro and very interesting to look at. They also have vintage clothing on sale.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried the cantado with vanilla syrup 9/10. In a small cup but here it seems its for quality and not necessarily to fill you up but nevertheless a gem! The cantado is espresso with milk foam so a stronger latte? Great for brunch, snacks, drinks!! Menu is small but it gets the job done for providing a great atmosphere for friends and family! I would definitely go here with friends for sure! Parking was a bit confusing but they do have a strip of free parking for customers--if not there are garages around that you may have to pay. Also good location as it is close to the pearl!

Yelp
My friend and I had a great time here on Monday (Labor Day). The staff is phenomenal, the vibe is fun, and the food was delicious. Sadly, I forgot Monday was a holiday and therefore not a weekend date, so I wasn't able to order the beef cheek sandwich I'd been eyeballing, and it wasn't 10:30 yet, so I couldn't order my backup (egg salad sando). The breakfast options were a little limited, so I ordered the avocado salmon toast. Props to the cashier for being incredibly patient with me! (I'M SORRY!!) First off, for the location - the prices are pretty decent. The closer you get to the Pearl and Downtown the more expensive things are, but this was kind to my wallet. I also ordered a cortado, a flat white, and a mimosa. My friend ordered yogurt, a mimosa, and black coffee. While the food is decently priced, the coffee is a smidge on the higher end. The coffees were excellent. The cortado in particular was divine. Very smooth and velvety! Even the black coffee was really good. I'll need to buy a bag of beans next time. My toast was deceptively filling - two long, thin pieces of bread. One with smashed avocado and salmon, the other with some sort of salmon spread, both topped with fresh sprouts. One of the toasts was enough to fill me up, and I ended up taking the other home. I also picked up a cookie for my sister. When we shared it that night, it was very soft and decadent. A+ cookie. My maps app took me to the corner of Grayson and Broadway, but the cafe is more on the corner of Josephine and Broadway. Just a heads up for anyone trying to find them. This is a place I feel really shines on the weekends, so perhaps next time a visit on Saturday or Sunday is needed. Regardless, my friend and I really enjoyed meeting up here.

Yelp
Came here with a work friend and had a lovely time! I got the cottage cheese and toast with a side of bacon and my friend had gotten the avocado toast. Mine was delightful! Her hot coffee was served in a sweet pink glass. Everyone was kind between the service and description of the menu. A great spot for meeting up with friends or a new date.

Yelp
This place is soo cute so many sitting options & a small shop in the back, staff is friendly & coffee was really really good but a bit pricey!

Melanie S.

Yelp
Officially opens 5/7!! I went in today and had the pleasure of ordering a coffee as the team is still working on getting set up for their grand opening. They were so sweet and I look forward to all the menu items they will be offering sandwiches, pastries, and snacks. The inside is sooo cute to sit and spend time with cozy bench seats, a loft, and even a little nook with vintage clothing for sale.

Sergio D.

Yelp
We got the bagel sandwich, avocado toast blueberry muffin- all were really good. Very fresh Coffee was great Chill spot Friendly staff
google avatar

Eddy R.

Yelp
Place was packed for good reason. Was not able to taste the food because every table was taken so I got there's seasonal apple pie latte. It was a decent latte and tables did open up by the time I received my drink. If you're just there to drink a latte I would go somewhere else. You're there to try the menu this place looks great but still have not tasted their food. The vibes are there and I did enjoy looking at the vintage clothing they were selling. I appreciate it that it was men clothing for the most part. I would give it a 3.5 however since I cannot put .5 I will go up to 4 as the staff and ambiance was nice.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Easy parking and really cute and yummy drinks! I got this matcha latte, and I finished it within a few gulps. I'm usually someone who takes her time drinking coffees too, so that's how you know it was good. Really cute aesthetic, and the workers are very nice. This seems like a good place to get some work done!
google avatar

Clarrisa N.

Yelp
The place is a little small with booth, table, and high top seating. Breakfast items range from cereal to breakfast sandwiches. The service was was good and friendly. We tried the breakfast sandwich, which we could have probably shared, and coffee. No complaints on food. Parking garage is available and they will validate your ticket so remember to take it in with you.
google avatar

Camly T.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. The vibes are great inside with all the sunlight and windows. I love that they have real food on their menu. I haven't tried their snacks that they have later in the day thought but they sound yummy. It is definitely a place to indulge. The people working have been great. Even though I ordered breakfast right after the kitchen closed for breakfast they accommodated my order. Will be in my staple rotation.
google avatar

Doretta W.

Yelp
Decided to drop in for a simple drink. Was excited that they made their own Chai but disappointed they were out of ingredients. So I went for the sweet cream coffee ... iced. It had a strange taste .. almost like kalhua. The service was nice. The location is crazy busy and hard to find parking.
google avatar

Wilber S.

Yelp
This coffee shop was such a vibe! You come for the coffees but you stay for their sandwiches!! Omg they were so so good! The staff helped us pick the right sandwiches for us by describing how they are and their bread is amazing. We even left with a fresh bag of beans for our set up at home! This will definitely be one of my go to spots for lunch and coffee.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
At 11 on a weekday they were packed & it was so loud! I had anticipated a quiet coffee shop to read my book. The crowd is incredibly eccentric. Staff & patrons all were joyful and respectful; great people watching. My sandwich was massive; eating it was messy and awkward. As a baker myself I found the bread to be slightly over baked. Menu is a tad pricey.
google avatar

Gyu S.

Yelp
i don't think i've been to a cooler looking coffee shop! the decor and interior is S tier and has amazing vibes. i got an iced london fog with oat milk and it was one of the best i've had. my only complaint is that i waited 10 minutes for my drink and it wasn't even busy at the time. although i don't mind too much since the worker was kind and very polite
google avatar

Vero T.

Yelp
This is around the block from my home and that can be dangerous because I love coffee and I love sweets! Both are very good here. I have purchased from this store via Too Good To Go and also on my own. I have tried several items and I've liked it all. Cookies, brownies, cucumber melon salad., overnight oats, and blueberry muffins... they have it all! It has a chill vibe with friendly servers. I will definitely continue going back to try their other food.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
I was pretty disappointed with the coffee here. It was pretty late into my journey to try different coffees in SA. I paid over 10 dollars for my latte with almond milk, my fiancé paid over 8 dollars for his, this is the most that I've paid for a latte in SA. The lavender latte and the vanilla latte just didn't work out for us.

Ximena C.

Yelp
Super yummy Vietnamese coffee and fresh fruit yogurt bowl. The staff is always super nice and the it's a nice place to have coffee with a friend.

Yelp
From the versatile creativity of the shop's interior design to the vibrant high grade quality of Proud Mary's coffee blends they serve. The Newstand does an outstanding job with delivering top quality friendly customer service from all staff, as well serveing delicious authentic quality driven Sandos(Sandwiches) with fresh daily baked focaccia bread designed by a professional himself. Do yourself a favor and check out The Newstand for a drink/coffee, a glass of wine, a snack, a sandwich, or just to absorb the amazing ambience to study or get any form of work done that you wouldn't want to do trapped at home. P.S. tell the owner Dez or Page, Andre sent you ;)

Sonya H.

Yelp
The coffee was fantastic and the food was delicious. Ava Grace was so nice and welcoming. She checked on our table and made sure we had everything we needed. Everyone was great!

Yelp
I've been waiting to try this place out ESPECIALLY since I know they're serving coffee and pastries! I went on the day they were to open but there was a delay so I made it in today. Let me just say the ambience.....I felt transported out of San Antonio! It definitely had an Austin-esque vibe and I LOVE it! This place is located in the corner pocket of the beautiful Jefferson Bank building. Parking is free for 30 minutes in the parking garage of Jefferson bank. Upon entering you're immediately uplifted by the clean refreshing feel and vibe of the place. You know by the look of things that everything is going to taste good. They serve sandwiches, coffee drinks, snacks, wine, pastries and soda drinks. To the rear of the shop is another room where they sell clothes, candles, etc. I ordered the chicken salad and an iced vanilla latte with almond milk and their house-made sweet cream. EVERYTHING was delicious. Had the free parking been over 30 minutes I would have stayed longer. The service was super friendly...even the cute chef was beyond helpful. I'll definitely be back, and not just for the cute chef!

Yelp
Great food, great coffee, great atmosphere! The tribune sandwich is a 10/10. Really unique, reasonably priced vintage clothing pieces also.
google avatar

Angelo C.

Yelp
Got the Bella Loca matcha and The Union sandwich. Holy crap the sandwich was soooo good. I was a little skeptical because of the salmon smear but it complement the whole sandwich so well. Now my standards for sandwiches have increased, thank you newstand. The matcha was a perfect balance between being sweet. The ambiance was super cool. Right across the Pearl. And I think they had like cocktails as well. Next time I go I would love to try the tea. Oh! I also got this little carrot cake scone? The texture was really nice.
google avatar

Yelp
What an incredible concept with a gracefully hospitable staff and exquisite food. I worked for Paige a few years ago and always admired his drive, passion and unwillingness to conform to the world. I learned so much from him in our short time working together but he was a major inspiration for me to change my career path and truly find something I was passionate about. By extension in working with him I had the honor of engaging with Dez and always admired her spunk, authenticity, beauty, and boldness. They are a powerful combo and they have created a place that reflects them both in equal parts. If you are looking for a nostalgic coffee shop, homemade pastries, an iconic large sandwich, a vintage pullover or even just to a place to settle for the day, the Newstand is for you. It truly has it all. And know that by supporting the Newstand you are supporting a unique, beautiful piece of both Paige and Dez and that is an essence that could never be replicated!
google avatar

Sarah V.

Yelp
Was try yummy the sticky bun. I used a coupon for it and it was cheap. It's good with coffee so get a coffee
google avatar

Nina K.

Yelp
vibe is so cute! prices are a bit high but not impossible and i love hanging out here it's so pretty! there's a parking garage around the corner and it's walkable from the pearl parking area as well!
google avatar

Luigi B.

Yelp
Honestly the best sandwich I've eaten that I did not make! I enjoyed the Inquirer, a combination of roasted pork, veggies, and a cheese sauce that really brought the whole sandwich together. AND, can't go wrong with everything between a fresh focaccia. The service was very good but things were a little difficult to find, I.e. napkins. A good steady clientele really lets you know the place is a must visit. Pity they had run out of certain items that would have added to the lunch (chips). Overall, go and enjoy one of the best sandwiches you will ever have.
google avatar

LeRoy K.

Yelp
Visited for lunch within a few days of opening. Good coffee and loaded, creative sandwiches. They were out of a few items we wanted to try but service was good and items were fresh. Hopefully they will have a bit better idea of the daily customer flow so more choices will be in stock. Nicely decorated little spot.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Friendly welcome and good looking place. Ran out of most things to eat, sandwiches. Can say the cheese board was wonderful. Parking is a challenge and the patio is a work in progress. Several parking spaces across the street and on the street, but limited. We plan on going back to see what develops. Needs something to sell.

C K.

Yelp
Such an amazing coffee shop/restaurant! Everything here is so good from coffee to breakfast sandwiches to bakery items. Thank you for bringing delicious food and coffee to San Antonio!

Katherine N.

Yelp
Super cute atmosphere and the food was great as well! We tried their new brunch menu (the bagel sandwich and breakfast sandwich) and everything tasted delicious. Staff were very nice as well.
google avatar

B B.

Yelp
The coffee is 5 stars. Would definitely swing by again for the coffee. The food is okay. We were not big fans of the bread. The sandwiches were okay. The chocolate chip cookie was good, especially if you like a cookie dough or soft cookies. The location is in a beautiful building. Parking in the garage was convenient. Kind of close to the pearl, you could probably walk there in the day, if the weather permits. The people who work there are very nice.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Coffee and sandwich were great! Good selection of vintage items as well. Everyone was very nice, highly recommend:)
google avatar

Synneve L.

Yelp
We ordered the Post, the Times, a vanilla flat white, and an Americano. The sandwiches were good and the coffee was great! The natural lighting in the space is also really nice.
google avatar

Juliett D.

Yelp
They have a chocolate chip cookie syrup! Owners are super friendly and great location.

Avalyn G.

Yelp
So glad I found this place and can now say that I've had the best avocado & salmon toast in my life!!! I also ordered some sweets to go and they did not disappoint. The staff is friendly and the just a great ambiance overall. Will come back next time I'm in San Antonio.

Kelli K.

Yelp
We loved their sandwiches and the Sticky Bun. The bread taste delicious! Very fresh! The iced caramel latte tasted a little burnt.
google avatar

Zoey G.

Yelp
Super cool place - limited coffee choices but definitely worth the visit ! The sweet and creamy was my fav , and I ordered "the times " which was an egg salad sandwich with other goodies in it . The music playing the whole time was banger after banger , and the presentation of both coffee and food were immaculate! Definitely visiting again

Matt M.

Yelp
First let me say the vibes in here were amazing! It's such a cute little coffee shop near the Pearl and they even give validated parking! I got the matcha with sweet cold foam and that was one of the best cold foams I've ever had! The workers were amazing and were super friendly. I just wish they had more flavors! Side note: if you're looking to be here for a while to work the seats are a tad uncomfortable after a while, but not too bad!

Yelp
The ambiance at The Newstand is casual and inviting. The restaurant has a cozy and laid-back atmosphere, making it a great spot to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal. Whether you're dining alone or with friends, you'll feel right at home in this charming establishment. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring that your dining experience is nothing short of perfect. I had the tribune with braised beef, so tender and delicious. I let the cashier recommend a coffee and she was spot on with her pick. The pastries are perfectly sweetened without being overly sweet. 10/10 would recommend and I can't wait to go back and try the other sandwiches. My son tried the union salmon sandwich but I wasn't able to snap a pic before he bit into it and was able to get an aesthetically pleasing photo
