18 Charleston Bars and Restaurants With Impressive Outdoor Views

"What was once the vodka-soda-stained hangout for bachelorette parties and undergrads is now a nice stop for folks looking for sophisticated cocktails and rosé by the glass. The pre-sunset crowd at the Vendue Rooftop is a quiet bunch peering at the sight of the Charleston Harbor from above. The post-sunset crew might get a little rowdier." - Erin Perkins

"Of all the rooftop bars in Charleston, Vendue probably has the best view. Like the others, it's part of a hotel, but the scene here is more casual. It's a large space, split into a few levels—walk up to the very top for an unobstructed, 360-degree view of Charleston, which is well worth the steps. In addition to patio seating, Vendue has a few nooks outfitted with wicker couches that are perfect for groups. They also serve lunch and dinner, and have live music every Sunday from 4 to 7pm."

The Rooftop Bar At Vendue Review - French Quarter - Charleston - The Infatuation

"Rooftop bars follow a simple logic: Drinks? Good. Drinks with a view? Even better. However, they also have a tendency to attract people looking to relive their frat days. But the Rooftop Bar at Vendue is quieter, more casual, and way more affordable than other rooftop bars in Charleston and still provides you with great views of the nearby harbor. This is a good spot to stop by for a drink right at sunset or if you need to escape from the overly crowded bars in the French Quarter." - Emily Yates

Nice atmosphere. Rooftop is okay. You really don’t see much. First floor has lots of art to enjoy and photo opts. Food is good. Service was slow. We went at 1:00pm so it was poppin. Over all a good place to stop off to grab an appt & drink.

Google
Be aware there are two levels to the rooftop. When you get off the elevator, turn left and go up the stairs.. that's where the real view is. Also the Mahi in the fish tacos is decent but the "slaw" looks like the peel from the carrots you normally throw away. I guess they get complaints about this regularly but don't actually improve it. Our waiter Nehemiah was very kind, attentive, and I give him five stars!

Google
One of my favorite downtown spots! 2 rooftop decks, amazing food and specialty cocktails, and awesome service at the bar!! Beautiful view and nice breeze is an added bonus! Ask for Kayce at the bar and tell her I sent you!

Google
DANA was amazing!!! So beautiful on the rooftop, food was great, service was awesome, very friendly!! Would definitely recommend to anyone stopping by Charelston :-)

We only had drinks one afternoon. Definitely a great place to visit for views and relaxing. Definitely hot on top of roof but fans were there.

Google
Even tho the bar was pretty packed, the patio was open so we sat ourselves and Milan came to take care of us! He did such a great job being attentive even while running around! Even the beer he recommended was so good! 10/10 will come again!!

Google
Such a cute place! Dana was an absolute rockstar. She even gave us recommendations of other places in the area. Food was yummy and drinks were tasty and reasonably priced

My husband and I stopped for a drink at the rooftop bar and had the best bartender. His name was Tim. He was so accommodating and super kind. Also, Georgia, one of the managers in the restaurants was so nice to my husband and I was arrived. Great place.

Yelp
As usual, the food was excellent. Rave reviews for the burger and Mediterranean salad. Our server, Max W brightened our day with great service.

Yelp
A bit of a strange setup- you just go up and choose an empty spot. Luckily there were some, so we sat despite the tables being dirty. Our server was on top of his game, though. I don't even think he wrote anything down and there were 7 of us. All the drinks were made correctly and the food we got for the table was pretty tasty. I wasn't the biggest fan of the espresso martini I ordered, but the coconut drink I had made me feel like I was on the beach. Definitely enjoyed the company and the service. And the truffle fries. Not much of a view from where we were, but it was nice to be up top.

Yelp
Great spot . Kitchen closing I think 9:30 pm . Fast and sweet service from Alicia. Great cocktails options , non alcoholic options available. It's pleasure to sit at 10 pm and watch night Charleston vibe .
google avatar

Yelp
We sat outside at the Rooftop Bar when we first got there. The only food we had were truffle fries, because we had reservations for dinner. The view was spectacular. We couldn't stay outside for very long because it was 32 degrees and unfortunately they don't have heaters for the outside seating. It got really cold, so we went to the inside area of the bar at sat dir awhile. There were heaters there so it was definitely more comfortable. Justin was our server and he was amazing.

Yelp
We came in for drinks and had a great experience! The rooftop offers a great view of historic Charleston and the weather was perfect. Service was good and helpful. To drink, I got the Blush martini. I love anything with gin and lavender and it was lovely. Our group also did green tea shots and we liked them a lot. This is a fun place to relax with some food and drinks.

Yelp
Amazing views of the entirety of downtown Charleston. I'm sure this place is the place to come for the weekends and sunsets. The drinks were good, however the food was terrible. We ordered simple chips and salsa/ dips appetizer and they had to be the worst we've ever had. I'm sure other things are good, but I'm not sure how you go wrong on chips. The servers were friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Marieke S.

Yelp
Grabbed a nice, casual lunch near one of the open windows (but thankfully in the shade, we were hot!). Our server was very attentive and nice, she quickly checked in on us various times but it never felt like too much! We had the chips and trio of dips to start, and the BBQ chicken sandwich. Came here with a GF-friend and she had a decent selection of food to choose from, but also chose the BBQ chicken sandwich, no bun and sauce on the side. We both enjoyed our meals! I liked the mix of mustard BBQ and fig jam, personally think there could have been more of the jam. The fries were crispy and yummy!

Yelp
This place could have gotten 5 stars if the service had been more responsive and other staff had catered to a better dining experience. The location and rooftop view is beautiful, it's absolutely worth checking out just for that! The food was good and seemed to be priced fair for the area. The main detractor was the slow service. It seemed like there was only one wait staff member for the entire rooftop, which definitely should be increased. One of our drinks didn't arrive until we were done eating our food, and we also waited a very long time for the bill when it was time to go. Water was not refilled and it just overall felt like guests were forgotten about. Many tables around us experienced the same things or worse then what we did. I also thought Ketchup packets was an interesting choice. Overall I think this has the potential to be a great experience. Perhaps they were just understaffed tonight. I would certainly recommend it even with the draw backs in mind. It's such a pretty view of the cityscape from up there!

Yelp
This was a nice experience for dinner! Came here with my in laws looking for a good place to eat and enjoy the city a bit. We're glad we came because we all enjoyed the food and drinks here. Nice views too.. we got the Greek mezze platter to start, it was a good and healthy choice. For dinner I opted for the lobster roll and it was pretty good. My MIL got the burger and my BIL got the fish tacos. All was tasty! Definitely come here for a positive experience!

Yelp
They have some great views of the town and the water. We went on Monday , and it wasn't packed . I'm sure it fills up on the weekends. I had a shrimp quesadilla, it was tasty. Our server Skyler was friendly and gave us tips on where else to go to . She was knowledgeable. Make time to come and chill here with a drink in hand .

Yelp
Food, service and ambience was out of this world. I believe the bartender was Chris he was very attentive and makes amazing drinks. We sat at the bar on the rooftop and had the following: Caught In The Rain (Mock-tail) Coconut Puree, Lime, Pineapple Margarita Shrimp & Cucumber Boat Blackened Shrimp, English Cucumbers, Avocado Mousse, Smoked Buttermilk Dressing Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Salad Feta, Kalamata Olives, Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Artichokes, Chopped Lettuce, Greek Vinaigrette We were actually going to the Bohemian rooftop but the views were not good at all. The gentleman at the LowCountry Olive Oil Store highly recommended this rooftop and we were so impressed. The bottom hotel art is really cool on the way to the elevators. #charlestonrooftop #rooftoplounge #rooftop #rooftopbar #thevendue #venduerooftop #Revival #Revivalrooftop #visitcharlestonsc #impossibletraveler #charleston #charlestonsc #southcarolina #lowcountry #chs #explorecharleston #mountpleasant #charlestonlife #sc #chucktown #downtowncharleston #northcharleston #lowcountryliving #chstoday #charlestonsouthcarolina

Yelp
I've been to the Vendue multiple times and each time the service was fantastic! drinks are tasty and not too pricey. Last time had the Greek salad and it was AMAZING! And who doesn't love a rooftop and beautiful views of Charleston ?
google avatar

Tina G.

Yelp
The one point is for the view . Food is pretty bad, drinks are .... I've no words! Horrible . Stick to the beer and maybe fries. Such a shame! Why can't you have good food at this beautiful roof top ?

Linda W.

Yelp
Went for Happy Hour well priced wine and cocktails. Regular food menu. The cucumber shrimp boat was tasty except for the cucumber part-which was not so much. Chicken sand was ok. Enjoyed the rooftop venue. Service was great.

Yelp
I've visited Vendue frequently and have always enjoyed the views it offers and their cocktails. I'll be honest, I would skip their food menu. It's not the best and for the price you're paying it doesn't add up to the quality. The only issue I have with their drinks is that their nonalcoholic is the same price as the alcoholic which is laughable. Ok let's get back to the good. I've always had really good service. Tara was my most recent server and she was the absolute sweetest and so attentive. You can tell she works hard. I swear they need to pay their servers more for how crazy busy they get and the hustle these gals put in. This is a great spot to grab a drink and watch the sunset as it was a beautiful view of the city and bridge.

Yelp
My mom requested a rooftop bar for their last visit and we went with the Vendue since it's mentioned so many places as a great spot. On the whole, won't plan to return unfortunately - much better options in Charleston. The upper bar was closed when we were there on a beautiful Sunday afternoon so that cut off significant views. On the lower bar, you're looking a other buildings that's aren't cool or interesting. The service was fine - not fast but not slow. Everything comes in plastic cups and most of it is single use which is super concerning being so close to the water. The drinks were fine but for the prices, not worth it. The flatbread was really good but on the smaller size for the price. The fries were solid bar fries.
google avatar

Yelp
The entrance is...definitely strange. The elevator they ask you to use is a bit scary, and rides very slowly. There was lots of seating available so it seems great for large groups. Most mixed drinks are $14, and the ones we tried weren't particularly strong. I'd stick to bottles! Tables were pretty messy and sticky. The views were nice, but I don't know if I'll be back.

Yelp
Great atmosphere inside! I stopped in for a quick drink with family out of town after Thanksgiving. We received great service. Appetizer and drinks were outstanding! Will return for the rooftop view when it's warmer outside!

Kevie N.

Yelp
The place was very busy, and the staff was trying their best. We ordered orange crush and mixed drinks, and an appetizer, which took awhile. We had the Meze Plate appetizer, which was excellent. Very enjoyable sitting outside.
google avatar

Mary Y.

Yelp
Not at all impressed. The service was great, fast and friendly. The food however, was subpar. Being a rooftop bar was clearly the draw here not the food. Our picks: Cucumber shrimp, boat appetizer. The shrimp were very small and not good quality tasted very fishy. Mediterranean grilled chicken salad. The grilled chicken was way overcooked, dry and hard.

Yelp
The two level Rooftop at the Vendue is a pretty good bar with beautiful rooftop views. They have a wide range of cocktails along with beer and wine. Their food menu is limited, but the food is pretty good. The service is friendly but a bit disorganized. The Rooftop is spread across two levels, an outdoor, top-floor covered balcony and a true rooftop above, with a bar on each level, and a mix of bar seating, lounge seating, and more restaurant style seating. It can be a little confusing when you're supposed to go to the bar and when you're supposed to wait for table service. The servers don't always recognize whether you're there for food or just drinks. At one table we sat at, the waitress didn't seem to realize that we were in her zone. Since they're friendly about it, it's not a big deal... You can just flag someone down and ask. But, be prepared to flag someone down. Pro-tip: Usually, the top floor is nicer since it has the panoramic views, but the lower level shields you from the breeze better on days when that's important.

Yelp
Service | chicken sandwich | orange crush Service - overall, the service was really good. We went for a late brunch after landing and getting our hotel room. The place was half full, which was slightly surprising given how hot it was, highlighting its popularity. We sat at the bar and got food. The staff was very efficient. Chicken sandwich - I have had the chicken sandwich with fries. The meal was a great value given the size and location of the restaurant and the view. It was the perfect meal for someone hungry but not starving. I would gladly get it again and highly recommend it. The fries were classic southern fries with a sea salt that wasn't quite old bay sauce. Orange Crush - I had the orange crush, which was okay at best. I was disappointed because it lacked any character and was extra sweet. It Didn't have orange parts or juice with pulp or orange soda. Additionally - the sweetness level was too high. I would not recommend it. Why not 5 stars - the issue was the drinks weren't very good given the location and price point . I had the orange crush that was super sweet, didn't have actual crushed oranges or even orange juice with pulp, and wasn't mixed well. Monica had the cucumber margarita - and it was drinkable but not enjoyable.

Yelp
Came on a Thursday evening. Was pretty empty but beginning to fill up as we were leaving. The area we sat in didn't really have any views. The top floor was blocked off. The sun was setting and it would've been really cute to have sat there. The drinks were good. We shared the guac, salsa, and queso trío. Let me just say... coming from Texas... I would simply suggest staying far far away from all Mexican food in Charleston. We used extra limes, salt and pepper to spice up the guac and salsa. Overall, a chill area to grab a drink

Bradley W.

Yelp
Went to get drinks on NYE. They ended up charging $10 a shot for cheap Fireball. Never seen a more outrageous markup on a cheap liquor.
google avatar

Lily K.

Yelp
So, a bit confusing. There are bathrooms as soon as you walk in. Anyone can use. You don't have to feel guilty using the bathroom and not eating there lol. But after those you'll see a sign for the rooftop and there is an elevator. Only goes to the rooftop. It was fairly empty but took a minute for someone to take my order. Although when they did, it was pleasant service and quick. I got a cucumber margarita and loved it. I did not know but there is a higher rooftop than where the bar is and there another bar there. It's super cute and STUNNING sunset views of the city. Menu is short and sweet not many food options. I didn't eat here but not many gluten free options unless they have corn tortillas or tortilla chips. If so you can eat pretty much most things So very nice ambience. Good service, just takes a minute. But if you want to go and be left alone it's perfect. That was my vibe today I just wanted to enjoy the sunset and have my drink. So it was perfect.

Yelp
We were out walking and stumbled upon the Vendue while killing time before heading to Fort Sumpter. The hotel entrance is very grand with blinding white walls combined with modern design elements. We hopped on the little elevator to the rooftop and found ourselves the last table out in the sun. After sitting for a few minutes, we realized how lucky we were to have gotten a table because all the tables quickly filled up. Our server was great, she had a lot of tables to serve and was still attentive and came back to check on us. The cucumber margarita was amazing, super refreshing and light. We ordered two of those, and also had the strawberry basil lemonade, which I liked a lot but the cucumber marg was soo good and the clear winner in my book. The fried pickle spears were pretty good. I loved the tomato mozzarella caprese, the mozzarella and tomatoes were fresh and juicy. My fiancée had the barbacoa tacos and loved them, he kept saying with every bite how tasty it was. It was a great place to stop for an hour to grab some drinks and food before exploring Charleston.

M C.

Yelp
Our server, Dana, was outstanding, and it was nice being up on the rooftop of a pretty cool building, but the food was disappointingly mediocre and the loud construction noise on the neighboring roof (of the one aesthetically pleasing adjacent building) made this a stop I wouldn't go out of my way to repeat.
google avatar

Jeremy H.

Yelp
I came here on a suggestion and was happy with the place. The views are decent; however, most of the place does not have views of the water. There is a bunch of covered seating, which makes this place a great place to take a break when you've been walking around Charleston. They do have local beer; however, nothing is on tap. The service is great and I did enjoy my stop here.
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
It's just not good. You can tell the food is not made in house. It taste like it's from Costco. I have no idea why this place is highly reccomended.
google avatar

Liane S.

Yelp
They used to have the best salmon filet salad but no longer in the menu.. great views, partially open air rooftop bar. Great downtown location. Quirky. The hotel is interesting and showcases different artists work in lobby and across the street where they also have rooms.. I think their alcohol menu could be better
google avatar

Yelp
This was a very fun place for a casual dinner! The view from the top deck was fantastic, and, if weather permits, I recommend sitting up there. It was too windy for us so we sat at an open air table below, and had a great experience. We loved our waitress who was pleasant and genuinely friendly. Service was excellent. Our cocktails were both delicious. Food is reasonably priced and the portions are moderate -- in a good way! It was plentiful enough that I was able to finish my entree and feel comfortable, not stuffed-- perfect for someone who was taught to finish everything on her plate. Lol. The food was made with quality ingredients. I had a Greek salad with chicken which was lovely -- the chicken tasted brined and was a bit too salty, but it was grilled to perfection. The greens, cucumbers, etc were very fresh. My husand had the grilled shrimp quesadilla and he loved it. He also said that the ingredients tasted very fresh. Overall, great experience for a fun casual happy hour-like dinner at reasonable prices. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Good, not great. First impression: drinks are served in plastic cups. That isn't the end of the world, but it is the feeling that maintained across the experience. First round of orders: sangria, cranberry mule, and loaded fries (don't judge me, we just got off a flight and I was hungry and I didn't get the loaded fries at the airport and I wasn't passing it up twice!). All of it was fine. Mule was a little sweeter than I would have liked (that's nit-picking honestly), and the sangria was good. Fries were...just fries with melted cheese, raw onions, and some bacon bits. A combo you can't go wrong with, but also none of it blew me away. Also, 5 packets of ketchup on the tray with the fries. Take that for what it is. Second round of orders: both got Sunset Spritz and fried portobellos. Drinks, again, were good. The mushrooms were tasty, the sauce was all wrong. Should have been a ranch or aioli, definitely not the bottled sweet chili sauce it came with. I will say, our server was very nice. Views are ok. For a rooftop, I'm not particularly impressed. That's probably more of an issue of the general height of buildings in Charleston all being the same, but also the patio is on the wrong side of the building to get a good view. Solid 3 star. Not saying I wouldn't come back if I lived here, but wouldn't be on my list of recommendations to another tourist.

Vince H.

Yelp
Outstanding views, great drinks, good food, and amazing service. We enjoyed it so much we visited twice. Our bartender, Brendan, was the absolute best and ensured we had a great time.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
We came here at the recommendation of our tour guide who suggested it because they serve a drink that has that special vodka made from that special ingredient in Mississippi. I am realizing that is not helpful at all so I will do some research now. HONEYSUCKLE. That's what it is. It turns out, many places offer pretty much the same beverage with the same vodka so you don't need to come here to try it but there is the added benefit of a nice rooftop space. We popped in in the late afternoon and there was plenty of available seating. For reasons that still escape me, GF wanted to sit at the bar. On a rooftop. The bartender was very friendly and took excellent care of us. We tried the honeysuckle vodka drink. It was a lemonade beverage. It was pretty good, nothing earth shattering.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here on vacation and this place was referred to us by a local family member. It has a great bar the service was great friendly staff and the food was delicious! Definitely recommend coming here for a drink and bit to eat.

Yelp
Composed of two levels on top of the buildings, the Rooftop offers one of the best views of Downtown Charleston. You get to see the port, the spirals of several churches in the distance. And even at night, as we got to enjoy it, the glimmer of the city's lights near and far add a beautiful glint of elegance to the moment. Pictures are also amazing. We ran into a wedding party, and just like us, they were in awe of the view and taking pictures. They were friendly enough to take pictures of us and we reciprocated the favor. Then the drinks kept flowing and the conversations continued. Our bartender was incredibly professional. His drink combinations were executed to perfection. I had several Negronis, and the consistence was evident, and appreciated. Highly recommend it!
google avatar

Gwen C.

Yelp
Gorgeous views nestled in Charleston. My husband and I loved the atmosphere and our drinks. It was a Friday night so they were pretty busy but our server was still very attentive. Overall 10/10

Scott W.

Yelp
Great drinks. Friendly staff. Good vibes all around. View isn't necessarily the greatest, but a rooftop bar is always a good thing in warm weather.
google avatar

Georgeann T.

Yelp
We visited last week for lunch from out of state. Dana served us and she was very pleasant and friendly. Our drinks and food came quickly. It was some of the best food we ate while in Charleston. Dana even took the time to write down some of her favorite spots to visit and dine at while there!
google avatar

Avery G.

Yelp
Cute rooftop bar! Wish we had went closer to sunset, but it was a nice little spot to grab a drink. The upper part was closed for a private event, but we were able to snap a pic there and then have another view on another part of the bar.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
We had a great lunch at The Rooftop at the Vendue when we visited Charleston. The food was really good and our server Dana was amazing! Highly recommend it!
google avatar

Yelp
Drink / Atmosphere review only. By far the best rooftop view I've found so far. Well worth the visit to have a drink and enjoy the views. I challenge you to count the church steeples. There are many! The bartenders I've met have all been very friendly and the cocktails have always been good. Beer is cold. A must if you're in town for a visit and like roof top bars.
google avatar

Mary Kate D.

Yelp
Perfect spot for watching the ocean while having a breeze. Drinks are expensive but food is delicious.
google avatar

Rachael H.

Yelp
Don't let this place fool you. Even though there is construction downstairs and not really any welcoming sign telling you to just go right up in the elevator, just do it anyway! They are open and it was an enjoyable experience. We stopped in to rest our feet and have a quick drink. This place has a great atmosphere. The service was decent. Not over the top friendly but friendly enough. I ordered a red moon margarita hoping it would fulfill my craving for something a bit spicy. It was good, but I didn't taste any jalapeño or any spice flavor. We didn't order food but everyone around seemed to be enjoying their food and it looked delicious. The rooftop all the way at the top has a partial view of the harbor, though a lot of the tops of the buildings there prevent you from seeing too much. I'd still recommend it for a drink. Cheers!
google avatar

Lori T.

Yelp
Great rooftop bar, fun atmosphere! We really enjoyed the views even though a storm was coming through.
google avatar

Darrin L.

Yelp
Plastic chairs and tables - not a great view. Expected higher end furnishings based on the beauty of their actual hotel.
google avatar

Kendur H.

Yelp
Got the steak frittes, asked for medium and it came out overcooked and dry instead, super small portion. Tried the chips and the lobster roll and overall it was mediocre. Decent view but very overpriced especially for plastic tables and chairs. Service was fine, got our order taken and food delivered in a timely manner. Mid place overall, forgettable.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Came here during a trip to Charleston. They accept walk in's, and we were immediately seated. I had heard about how this is the best rooftop bar in the city. I thought that the multi-level layout was unique. Their furniture and chairs are whimsical and eye-catching. I ordered the aperol spritz, and it was pretty standard. It came in a plastic cup, and I would have preferred a glass one. I thought the views were ok...there were too many surrounding buildings to get a good view of the water. Service was on point.
google avatar

Tasha F.

Yelp
Great ambiance, and perfect place to go have drinks and overlook the Downtown Charleston skyline. Take a hat and shades if the sun is shining bright, just in case you don't get a table with an umbrella.
