Overhyped and Overpriced - Won't Be BackRating: 2 stars
I went to The Taco Stand this weekend, invited by friends, and unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype at all.
The place is super popular, which means no street parking and very limited seating both inside and out--expect to wait or eat standing up if it's busy. They have locations across San Diego, Las Vegas, Miami, and beyond, and they do make their salsas fresh daily, which sounds great on paper. We sat outside, which was partially shaded and thankfully the weather was perfect, but it was a battlefield waiting for a table and chairs. People were starting to get cutthroat, and your food takes like 20 minutes to be ready, adding to angst and frustration at this location.
The menu focuses on tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and classics like that. I ordered the Surf and Turf burrito (no tomato, as requested). For around $15, I was really underwhelmed. There were only two or three shrimp in the whole thing, the steak was overcooked and tough, and the filling was mostly just cabbage--no rice, no beans, nothing to make it substantial or interesting. It felt pretty boring overall.
The salsa bar is a big selling point, but none of them blew me away. I ended up dumping a mix of all of them on my burrito just to add flavor. The black one and the habanero were probably my favorites, but the chipotle and cilantro cream ones tasted off--like they were made with cheap seed oils. They were thick, creamy, and left a weird coating in my mouth that I really didn't enjoy.
We also got churros for dessert. They were okay--not greasy, which was a plus--but a bit too bready and nothing special.
I'm not sure about the ingredient quality here. The next day, I woke up bloated with a puffy face, which makes me suspect cheap fillers, MSG, or something similar.
Overall, this place seems to ride on hype for all the wrong reasons. I've had way better Mexican food at better price points elsewhere. I wouldn't recommend it, and I definitely won't be going back. 2/5 stars.
