Where to Drink a Guinness in the Milwaukee Area This Winter | Eater

"See and be seen in one of the Third Ward’s most famous taverns. Besides serving Guinness on tap, this lovely bar and restaurant also makes up some inventive cocktails. The Wicked Hop’s food options are equally tempting, with brunch dishes like a Cajun-spiced potato hash with crawfish and Andouille sausage or a foot-long grilled cheese at lunch or dinner. At any time of day, finish your meal with a skillet cookie or house-fried cinnamon sugar doughnut holes." - Jeanette Hurt

A Salmon Sandwich That Conquers! I recently had the opportunity to visit this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by my experience. I opted for the salmon sandwich with a side of fries, and I must say it was an excellent choice. The salmon was cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavor, complementing the other ingredients in the sandwich wonderfully. The fries, for their part, were crispy and delicious – the ideal accompaniment. Beyond the food, the ambiance of the place was very pleasant, which made the evening even more enjoyable. Furthermore, the service was impeccable; the staff was attentive and friendly at all times, contributing to a very positive experience. My only observation would be the variety of the menu, which I found a bit limited. However, this doesn't detract from the quality of what they do offer. If you're a fan of good salmon and are looking for a place with excellent ambiance and service, I definitely recommend giving the wicked Hop a try!.

Stopped in for a bite to eat after getting caught in the pouring rain — perfect place to dry off and warm up! The food was delicious, and the service was great. We’re already looking forward to coming back on a nice day to enjoy the outdoor

I finally went to the Wicked Hop on a weekday evening, snd the atmosphere was quite kosher. However, the food was even better. I had the bbq chicken wings, garlic green beans and fries. The food was amazing, but the service was even better. Check it out. . .

Google
The fish fry was very tasty, fresh, and crispy. The panko crust was very thin not overpowering the fish. We tried both Cod and Perch and glad we did, it is impossible to choose, both were delicious. The outdoor seating was also a bonus. Although it was raining but the covers overhead were perfect. Highly recommended.

Wait time on a very busy Saturday brunch time was max 15 minutes quoted 45 minutes which was very cool. Got our server Andrew he was ready to go quick with getting our drinks and food order right off. Andrew checked in several times to make sure we had what we needed and we had drinks full. Got the salmon bagel and then the eggs Benedict both were worth the price. Sometimes you get fancy restaurants that over price both were made with precision and would highly suggest to anyone looking for a good place in Milwaukee. Ask for Andrew also!!

I came here for lunch and it exceeded my expectations. The prices are fair, get menu variety, awesome atmosphere, fantastic music and wait staff was all so attentive and took great care of me. The food was very good portion sizes and tasted amazing. Thank you, Elizabeth & Andrew, for the wonderful experience! I highly recommend The Wicked Hop!

Google
Highly recommended by a friend who lives nearby, & rides the city's free shuttle to their door. We showed up at 6:11pm on a Saturday night, pd $18 for 2hrs of pre-paid parking, then walked in with our party of 5, to hear "45min for a table". At 50min, we (including my short wife with a cane) were taken up a flight of stairs, and seated at a high-top table, (hard stools for her to get onto, & then her legs dangle). * Lessons learned: call ahead to make a reservation, and include any special requests like "ground floor, & not a high-top". Otherwise, food & service were pretty good!

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick sip and a bite on the way to the train station. Bloody Mary's are even better than they appear in the photos (omg the cheese). We split the West Coast Breakfast plus egg) and where quite. Food great, service great. I look forward to returning

Yelp
I'm not sure what happened this night, but we were charged extra for everything we didn't order. We came on a Tuesday around 5pm for their happy hour deals. It initially wasn't terribly busy at that time, but then around 5:45 or so, it started to pick up. We initially ordered 2 drinks off the happy hour menu, an old-fashioned sweet and a daiquiri. After the drinks came out, we ordered tenders and the cheese curds with marinara (cause we don't eat ranch). The wait was probably like 20-25 minutes for the food. The service was a bit slow, but we didn't mind as we did see a lot of people come through. However, our only problem was that when we got the tab, our appetizers were full-priced, we were charged extra for ranch, and our old-fashioned had an upcharge for whiskey. I'm not sure what happened there. We are more than happy to order food as-is with no substitutions, given that it's discounted for the happy hour deal. I'm not expecting 5-star service or food, but all of these little charges were unexpected. They did change our food prices to reflect the happy hour pricing, but left everything else the same.

Yelp
Last Friday night, we decided to have dinner at Wicked Hop. It was a bit late, and the place was packed. The host took a while to greet us, but that's okay. We asked for a table outside, and he said it would be about 15 minutes. We sat at the south bar, and the bartender was really friendly and attentive. The host said our table was ready and brought us outside the main door in the enclosed outdoor area. We waited for a while, and then a few other tables were seated. We sat there and waited, and the servers seemed really busy taking care of the other tables. I finally asked a female server if anyone would be taking care of us, and she said she'd check and never came back! After 20 minutes of sitting there, we decided to leave. In my opinion (I've been in the restaurant business for a long time), they weren't super busy. And the servers seemed really grumpy and uninterested in helping us. I wouldn't recommend going there late, especially if you're hungry.

Yelp
Taste of the food was excellent. Service was fast and efficient even with splitting the bills. Ambiance was cool nice to see the 3d art on the walls.

Yelp
I was headed to a show at the Skylight Music Theater and wanted to grab some dinner prior. There's quite a few eateries on Broadway within walking distance of the theater and The Wicked Hop is one of them. I had never been here so decided to give it a try. Because the show was on Saturday evening, I made reservations and was thankfully able to be seated straight away. The theater is about a five minute walk from The Wicked Hop and after doing some research online and seeing that they mostly specialize in pub fare, I figured giving myself and my dining companion 1.5 hours to dine and then make it to the theater would be plenty of time (and we actually even arrived at the restaurant a few minutes early to be certain). They were busy but not overly so (empty tables, etc) but the service was super laggy. We waited over ten minutes just for our beverages (which were just a soda and a cold brew) and then when she came to deliver them, she forgot the cold brew. I ordered the grilled cheese which comes served with tomato soup and she also forgot that. Soda and waters were never refilled, etc. In the end everything was taking so long when she came to pick up the check, I had to mention that we were in a bit of a rush which thankfully was the one and only time she didn't disappear for 15+ minutes at a time. Turns out, 1.5 hours was almost not enough time. So something to note if you're on a schedule. From a service perspective, it was pretty frustrating. The food itself was good though! As I mentioned, I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup with a caesar salad on the side. The grilled cheese dipped in their chunky tomato basil soup was delicious. The salad was crisp and fresh and presented well with an edible flower on the top. The food was a solid 4 stars. The service was 1-2 stars. So, three stars it is.

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan of the food at The Wicked Hop but I love the location and the outdoor seating- right in the heart of the Third Ward and across the street from the famous Milwaukee Public Market. In my opinion, this is a fun spot to stop for a drink with friends but it doesn't have the best tasting food. For the most part, it's typical bar food. Quesadillas, cheese curds, wings, tacos, grilled cheese, burger, some salad options. It's also noisy inside the restaurant. I've had a black bean burger and fries from there. It was good but not memorable.

Yelp
Horrible service on a Saturday afternoon. When we walked in they prefaced our seating with they are only serving apps for the moment. They sat us down and we probably waited a good 15 minutes before a server came over. In the meantime we asked and they said they would be there shortly. We only ordered drinks and cheese curds. The drinks were good, the curds were disappointing. These were the first I tried in Milwaukee and the worst. They were not cooked enough despite their appearance of golden brown. The restaurant name is pretty cool and I had higher expectations, but was definitely let down.

Yelp
Review speaks to experience on Saturday November 30, 11:45m. First visit to The Third Ward and The Wicked Hop, second visit for a friend who brought me as she wanted another signature Bloody Mary. She had this a couple weeks back and has raved about it since. Olives, a shrimp, no celery, but yes to cheese. You read that right - there are several strands of cheese in this beverage. She had this down before the appetizer came. Beer chaser. $12 I ordered from the weekend brunch menu, starting with the donuts for sharing. They were fried hot with the tiniest amount of powdered sugar, neglible as it added no sweetness. The chocolate sauce is Nutella and was served room temp. The raspberry coulis was a better dipper. $10 for not more than 10 donut holes. My entree was the West Coast breakfast which was avocado toast. The bread was not actually toasted. Just cold bread. I neither saw pepper nor picked up any flavor and only one bite seemed to have basil. The halved cherry tomatoes totalled about eight tomatoes. The avo spread had no flavor. Salt? Lime? Just plain and not enough anywhere to sink one's teeth into for a creamy bite. $11. Friend had burger and it was just so so overall. She was there for the drink. Service could not have been more disinterested. Slow to clear the old plates and we were seated at a small two top high top so space was limited. All in all, not a place I would return to. If you are a Bloody Mary fanatic maybe this is worth a visit. I

Yelp
Best bloody in Milwaukee. Love coming here just for a quick drink at the bar because there is a great atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
Super friendly service , food was pretty good but not earth shattering would definitely go again but try something different. We both had wraps one veggie and one chicken , fresh ingredients big portions. I will say fries were great gauc was good but lacked seasoning tortilla chips were awesome thinking they made them in house . We did run out of gauc before chips we thought they should have an option to get both gauc and salsa We will try them again over all pretty good and fast service which is always a plus

Yelp
We decided to try this place out which was recommended by a bartender so we said let's give it a try . We order the cheese curds chicken nachos and pretzel platter. The cheese curds was delicious the pretzel was hot and soft the nachos was the star on this order good amount of chicken and topping. Our waiter was good. Drinks was a great price they also had a dj and a bar in the next room which we stay and had a couple of drinks overall good food and good music I would recommend giving this place a try

Yelp
Unfortunately, The Wicked Hop left us less than impressed. I will say they were fairly accommodating with our large group/reservation. It could see it being a good place for a beer/app to watch a game but that's about all. No one in our group loved what they ate and a few people had some floating things that the staff called "cheese" in their water. I'll be trying someplace else next time I'm in town.

Yelp
A solid... just okay. It was a loud place with an okay meal, but we didn't experience anything special where we need to tell friends or family that they need to check this place out. Menu's got the basics but again didn't see anything unique or special. Food was fine but we left not dying to go back. Great location and shorter than expect wait was a plus for a Saturday night dinner. Not sure the waiter ever gave us eye contact. Didn't receive the "how's everything tasting" check-in, or "can I get you anything else" before the bill.
google avatar

Adrienne N.

Yelp
Our waitress was very nice and food came out fast. I'm a little picky on my cheese curds and thought they were okay. The Cajun chicken and pasta was also decent but not my favorite. The food overall was good. People on other reviews really hype up their brunch so perhaps I'd be more of that menu than their regular dinner menu. Overall it's cute and has fun street side seating.

Yelp
Brunch Review - Wicked Hop was bustling for brunch! The service was pretty good and there wasnt a wait for brunch which was nice. I got the crossiant breakfast sandwich - the sandwich was good but tough to eat as the plate was pretty full. Cheese curds were just ok in my opinion, as were the breakfast potatoes. Overall, brunch here was good. My friend enjoyed her benedict as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Just went for the first time to sick outside and have a quick drink. I was able to get an amazing bloody mary fully loaded for 12 dollars. Amazing cheese curds, smaller portion but a good snack for drinking. Had an amazing server who answered all our questions and had great recommendations when we were unsure.

Yelp
A local favorite of MKE. Offers local beer and dishes out delicious bar food that compliments the beer. Service staff is great. Family went here to have lunch on weekdays therefore it's not crowded. Fast service and friendly atmosphere. It gets crowded as weekend nears and popular spot for weekend brunch and night out dinner. When in MKE check it out.

Yelp
Overall was a cute brunch place! The waitress did let us know about a chicken sandwich deal they were having on Tuesday. However, my friend and I decided to both share the Buffalo wings which were great! We also both got the turkey &Swiss sandwich with fries! Portions were large and the ambiance of the place was cute as well. Would come back here to try other items, especially their Monday brunch deal!

Yelp
This spot always looks busy when we venture by. Finally decided to stop and got a table for 2 immediately. The Bloody Mary's are great and their seasonal cocktail list also had some fun drinks. We split the biscuits and gravy (they did 2 plates and there was a small split fee) and the donuts. Really delicious and large portions. Good spot to watch the games on a Saturday afternoon.
google avatar

Yelp
Killer Bloody Mary all fresh ingredients and made in house! Just look at the picture. Stopped in for a quick drink, enjoyed the convo at the bar, and the bartenders were all great! Good spot in the 3rd Ward. Dig that area! Enjoy

Marco W.

Yelp
The service is atrocious. The manager should be fired. Seated for 15 minutes as zero wait staff stopped by. I suspect they are losing money and/or poorly managed.

Yelp
I love Wicked Hop! It's a nurse heaven place! Great food, drinks and ambience! Everyone there is super nice and friendly! One of fav spots to go to!!!

Yelp
Even though they were super busy with it being Irish Fest weekend, we were still able to sit outside on a Saturday for dinner and our waiter gave us great service!! We had an appetizer of VonBruenchenhein Pretzel Platter, and it was good (nothing special). My husband had the foot long grilled cheese and he had fun trying to dip it in his cup of tomato soup and eat it. I really enjoyed my Butch's New Casino; it had such amazing flavor and the steak was super tender, but the size of the steak was kinda small compared to the hoagie roll.
google avatar

Yelp
We've always passed by this place, and finally decided to eat here. A couple steps away from the Milwaukee public market, street park, and parking area for the public market is about a 3 minute walk. The place was super busy when we went, so we didn't get to eat outside. I got the Bloody Mary and my bf got the beermosa. The bloody looks really good, but not my taste. It comes with jerky, a pickle, an olive, and mozzarella strings which are a little salty. The hoodoo voodoo hash is a bed of potato's with poached eggs and crawfish tails. It was really good, are the breakfast tacos were exactly what you think. Shrek was playing in the back, and different music in every section so it's a little loud in there. All in all, it's a good pick if you're in the area.

Yelp
Bar tenders were social and we enjoyed college football on the big screen. Great service.
google avatar

Navatnie E.

Yelp
The ambiance is great. We often come here for drinks and to enjoy sitting outside in the patio. We often stop in before events at Summerfest grounds. I have yet to order any food. This last visit was a little disappointing as our server didn't know what was available on the menu and wasn't sure what they had on draft.
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
Good place overall. I usually visit during warmer weather and love to sit outside and people watch. It's a bit chilly for that today so we sat inside and had a drink. I only ordered a draft beer and I did enjoy it but when I asked our server what was on tap for an IPA she said uhhh idk lakefront something. How do you not know??? It's a limited draft menu lol
google avatar

Yelp
went to the Milwaukee night market with friends & we were overwhelmed by the amount of people! After walking through, we walked over to wicked hop and had a bite to eat. We got seated outside immediately. The outdoor seating is surrounded by heaters, which is nice when it's chilly but I was SWEATING. I asked the hostess if there were any tables less directly under heat & she said she could turn it down specifically near our table so that was great and allowed me to be comfortable. The cheese curds here were great-- good cheese to breading ratio. My friend ordered the chicken strips kids meal with fruit & asked for veggies on the side. It was a pretty good sized meal for being on the kids menu! She also ordered the pretzel platter, which I did not try but she said tasted great. I ordered the southwest salad but with grilled chicken instead of blackened. Our waitress was very friendly & happy to make a substitution when I asked. The salad was a big portion and was exactly what I wanted. I also had the cucumber refresher cocktail, which I LOVED. I could have ordered 3 more.
google avatar

Ana T.

Yelp
Haven't been to the Wicked Hop in ages. The establishment did not disappoint. Yesterday, having lunch at Wicked Hop was nice. We were seated on the 2nd floor. I enjoyed the view. The service was courteous and most of all professional. Ordered the "Hop Burger" with a side of fresh fruit. My burger was plentiful. The portrait of Gene Wilder as Wonka was a cool touch!
google avatar

Molly D.

Yelp
Late night tacos at wicked hop we're such a good night cap! I wasn't expecting too much but they were super good. Right next to their outdoor bar on the patio, and the huge grill smelled so good. They were only serving chicken and steak and I got to try both. For $2 each it was a good steal! Loved the steak the most super juicy and loaded high with lettuce tomato cheese and a chipotle sauce. Loved the lime on top too! If you're walking around the third ward late at night stop by for some good food!
google avatar

Matthew A.

Yelp
Met some friends fo brunch as it was close to our hotel. We were seated pretty quickly considering how busy it was. The bloody mary was really good, except the beer chaser it came with was warm. Not sure if that's a Milwaukee things but I wasn't a fan. The breakfast tacos were delicious. My wife had the Rose Bowl which she enjoyed. Overall nice atmosphere and good food, worth a stop.
google avatar

Daniela B.

Yelp
I tried their fish fry during lent and it was amazing! I hardly ever see bluegill on a fish fry menu and I had to get it and I wasn't disappointed. A good option for work lunch!
google avatar

Gary G.

Yelp
Stopped here for a bite to eat after shopping at Milwaukee Public market. Saturday and Sunday afternoons, they usually go off their brunch menu. I had the Potawatomi burger with home fries ...very hot & delicious. Our server was very courteous and attentive. Prices are reasonable, and there's plenty of parking. Full bar available.

Yelp
Great place in the historic third ward to catch a sports game on their various, and large, screens and have some hearty, warm food. We've been here a few times, mostly later at night, but we recently went with family for brunch after my brothers UWM graduation. We did have a reservation, got seated upstairs and it was pretty packed, but our waitress was wonderfully attentive. They also have a bunch of outdoor seating in the front when the weather is good. This is a perfect place to get a delicious loaded Bloody Mary. Perfect flavor and when you ask for it to be spicy, they deliver! My favorites from the brunch was the French Toast Berries Garcia and the Eggs Benedict and the Sunday spuds. The Hot Toddy was fine, but had too much honey in it it was extremely sweet. They offer pretty large serving sizes which is great, but they tend to rely on salt as their main "spice/flavor" in most dishes. Not too unusual of a nitpick for an American food place but sometimes disappointing as it's just standard. Free Wi-Fi just ask for the password, I wish I remembered so I could add it here. My only real negative is that is gets loud and hot in there very fast. Not an ideal place to spend a lot of time as they are very busy or have conversation. Getting up and having to walk around for anything or to the bathrooms is dodging people and trays, definitely recommend just staying in your seat.

Kristel G.

Yelp
Wicked terrible service. So sloooooooowwwwwwww. Only two stars because the drink tasted good.

Jayne S.

Yelp
The food and overall vibe were good. However, upon a request for gluten free bun, I was given regular bread. While I am not celiac, so I wasn't incredibly sick, it still wasn't the best experience. Additionally, their gluten free selection just wasn't good. I would say that if you have food allergies, be very cautious of this place.
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
It's a requirement that you come here for brunch. Highly recommended the Bloody Mary and breakfast tacos! They have a huge menu so you can't go wrong. It's so much fun to sit outside and get the full experience of the Third Ward. Even at 10 AM on a Saturday, you are guaranteed a great spot to eat. You must try!
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
The Wicked Hop is well known in the area, and as a visitor when I asked for a casual place with good food, it was one of the first suggested. First the beer selection is great, and very diverse, take this opportunity to be a bit adventurous in your choice(s)! Of course if you like Bloodies, try their - it's almost a meal in itself! Appetizers are BIG - we got the nachos with chili one time, and chicken fingers a second. Almost enough for an entire meal for two people! But that didn't stop us. We didn't get to any desserts, but the Ruben and the Club Hopper are excellent - we needed boxes to take home leftovers and they were still tasty the next morning. Enjoy!
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Best bloody in MKE A meal in itself. see photos Outdoor seating Added grilled salmon I asked to have it medium rare And guess what it came out medium rare! Thank you The ceasar salad with creamy dressing needed an extra serving but it was tasty too JYW recommends !

Yelp
Well, the service is great but the food wasn't all that great. Really liked the fried cod and fries but the burger was just okay for the price ($18). My kiddo didn't like the the buttered noodles at all - flavorless. Most disappointing was that they charged me $2 for an extra little cup of tartar sauce. Not cool. Cool decor here though. Good music and fun pinball machines. Overall a good vibe here. They are known for their bloody Mary's and most people seem to vibe here for that. I'm just not into bloody Mary's.

Yelp
Here's a good people watching spot. If the weather is nice and folks are out on the street, this is the place to be, but make sure you get a table on the street. If there are no outside tables available or it's not a great outside day, go somewhere else. There are so many choice in the area with a similar menu. You're not really going for the food. The service is very good for the type of restaurant this is, and the food is pretty good american pub food. I've eaten here a few times. The burgers are a solid choice. This week, someone in my party had the seared tuna over a salad. I thought that was a courageous choice for this type of establishment, but it was good... I tasted it. Someone at our table had the fish fry (Friday night). I did not try that, but she said it was not a beer batter, just bread. I think she was a little disappointed. Frankly, I'm not sure I'd have known the difference. I had the clam chowder. That was very tasty, if not a little heavy on the potatoes, but I'd order it again. Bottom line. It's a great place based on location. You deal with the street noise, have a mimosa and enjoy.

Janie B.

Yelp
Came here for dinner and a drink and it was great! Chicken sandwich and Alfredo were both very good. Was somewhat busy but still got fast service. Would come back here again for sure!

Yelp
Service is has always been good. (I live in the neighborhood). It's definitely a stomping ground for locals and visitors alike. Bloodies are yummy and they have a good selection of pescatarian and meat options. Good place to people watch if you're into that but there's also indoor seating if you'd prefer to be away from the crowd. (Outside area is dog friendly.)
google avatar

Alyssa K.

Yelp
This place is good. normal American food. It's always packed. Servers are definitely and understandably busy and fraught with tasks. It's fine, but if you're stuck on a balcony on a nice day when it's overcrowded, it's not pleasant. I would go back for a patio seat and a drink but not for atmosphere and food. Just my opinion.

Keegan L.

Yelp
These cheese curds are miles better than the "best cheese curds in Milwaukee" over at Lakefront Brewery for sure. Expensive but super solid place to eat!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Went here for after dinner drinks and had a great time. The unexpected dj added to our already fun evening, as did the smaller dance floor and artistic bar. The outdoor ice bar was beautiful, connected to a covered space with tables, heaters, and a corn hole set. Had there not been a blizzard during our visit, we definitely would have spent more time outside.

Yelp
Amazing weekend brunch spot, Hoodoo Voodoo hash so good, 12yr old loved the eggs Benedict XVI. Dont forget to order your brunch cocktails!
