Where to Find the Best Hot Chocolate in NYC | Eater NY

"This Soho-based chocolatier and macaron shop offers a hot chocolate that is a celebration of both of its dessert lineages. Blended with a mix of dark chocolate beans, the drink is lightly sweet, chocolaty, while not being too heavy. What makes Thierry Atlan’s offering particularly inviting is the accompanying mound of whipped cream, created with West African dark chocolate, finished with one of Thierry Atlan’s signature chocolate macarons." - John Tsung

Made entirely of chocolate, the over three-foot-tall egg utilizes a moving platform bringing it to life. Thierry Atlan - Review - Soho - New York - The Infatuation

"Skip the lines at Ladurée and head down the street to Thierry Atlan when you're in the mood for macarons. This tiny jewel box of a shop is operated by the only Meilleur Ouvrier de France chocolatier working in the United States, and you can tell. Anything made with chocolate is going to impress, from perfect truffles to an extraordinarily well-balanced cup of hot chocolate that's served at just the right temperature. The macaron flavors are classic but expertly done. We especially love the violet cassis." - Carina Finn

This place was recommended to me by a friend. I tried it once and loved it ( Rocher and dark chocolate mint are my favourites). They have great chocolate selections and pre packaged options for gifts! Their macarons were also delicious.

Chef Thierry had made three thousand rose champagne hearts for Valentines Day and ten were left when I went to the store yesterday afternoon. Naturally I bought six. Beautiful heart shaped boxed filled with macarons and chocolates of all sizes were for sale. This store has the finest macarons in all of New York City. Resistance is futile for me. Invariably, I buy both macarons and chocolate. A variety of chocolates are available from bars, barks, chocolate coated almonds and hazelnuts, pistachio clusters to name a few. Rich hot chocolate is popular and as Antoine told me ice cream is starting next week. It’s a boon that I don’t live in the area as I would become fatter and penniless!

Google
First time in the store and was helped by Sisi. She was absolutely amazing, knowledgeable and friendly and put a smile on our face and macarons in our belly. We bought a lot and will definitely be back. Go birds!

Google
The best macaroons I tried in the city 😋 I even cannot choose, which one I like the most. Every flavor was special. I also tried the chocolate and it was really good as well. If you are in NYC, don’t miss this place.

Google
Thierry Atlan is a french chocolatier hailing from Paris. It is important to note that they are a MOF (Meilleur Ouvrier de France) which is effectively the #1 rank/winner across all of France in a certain craft / specialty. It translates to “Best Craftsman of France”. I did not appreciate this until I was on a food tour in Paris and we learned what MOF meant. There are competitions for everything from cheese mongers to chocolatiers to basket makers, etc. The chocolates and macarons are delicious. Both my wife and my favorite chocolate in ALL OF NYC hands down. The service has always been top quality. Anthony is a true gem & is always in a friendly & welcoming spirit!! The rest of his staff have always been a pleasure to deal with as well. Highly recommend Thierry Atlan - whether for a simple hot chocolate, macaron ice cream sandwich, or their flagship macarons & chocolates. Merci!

Google
This place is phenomenal. Awesome staff!! This was the first time I ever had a macaroon. This place had that authentic French feel. Very clean aesthetic and design. The flavors seemed almost endless and the texture, taste and consistency was perfect. I will be back

Google
This store is wonderful! I recently went in for the first time and the employee that greeted my friend and I was so kind and friendly. He also offered us samples of the macarons. I'm not big on the salted caramel flavor, but the sample I had was so good! I bought vanilla, nutella, cookies and cream, and birthday cake macarons and they were all so delicious. You can't go wrong with a vanilla macaron, but I really enjoyed the nutella and cookies and cream ones. I'll definitely visit again next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Dubai Chocolate has become an international sensation. Around the world, there are many versions including in America. I have sampled quite a few but I have yet to find one where the chocolate too plays a star part. Today I found it at Thierry Atlan's chocolatier in SoHo. Chef Thierry has inaugurated his Dubai Chocolate Collection with a bar, a macaron and an ice cream. I had all three. Love at first taste. The macaron looked more like a cookie and each bite was toothsome and flavorful. Each spoonful of the ice cream had texture with the creaminess, the crunch of the pistachios and the chocolate shell and shredded kataifi. Most of all the high quality of the chocolate shone and made each mouthful memorable.

Yelp
I came back and tried the strawberry, lemon, and rose lychee macarons and liked them all! The Rose lychee was my favorite on and the strawberry was so cute with little seeds on the shell that made it look like a strawberry!

Yelp
Small macaron shop located in SoHo. They also have other pastries and gelato. The shop is beautiful and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. I'm not a big fan of macarons but came here with someone who has never tried it before. They have many different flavors including seasonal flavors. My favorite was the caramel and hazelnut. The caramel macaron was a bit chewy and so deliciously decadent! The other flavors I tried were just ok. It comes in a beautiful box.
google avatar

Ro R.

Yelp
Omg. They have new items here. Anthony is always so personable. I love the yuzu and passionfruit macarons here. They are now offering macaron ice cream sandwiches!!!!!! Two of my favourite things combined.
google avatar

Jen W.

Yelp
Amazing! Their fruit flavors are the strongest and most enjoyable. My favorite are the in passion fruit and yuzu lemon. They have seasonal flavors as well. Pumpkin spice is strong and will punch you in the face of you're not a fan. Champagne Rosé is just enough that it's not overpowering. I enjoyed the strawberry verbena, plus they are all visually beautiful. The flavors are strong and you know exactly what flavor it is. They also have chocolate which is visually appealing and tastes good too. I used to go to the other place nearby but I like this place better. The staff is friendly and offered me samples as well, which is why I got the champagne Rosé. They had a Boston cream one as well, and if you enjoy Boston cream donuts you'll enjoy this too. Definitely worth checking out if you have a sweet tooth.

Yelp
The name "Thierry Atlan" simply reeks of elegance...like the name of a fancy watch. In this case, though, it's confections. Inside, you'll encounter a small but efficient and beautiful venue with helpful employees to guide you through the panoply of delectable options. If you are grabbing a meal in the area, it is worth skipping dessert at the restaurant in order to peruse the offerings here. You'll encounter everything from dark chocolate bars/truffles to coffee and pastries to unique ice cream flavors.

Yelp
I've been thinking about Thierry Atlan since I finished the last of my goodies in early January, and muuust make the trip back downtown to pick up more truffles and chocolates soon. My boyfriend insisted we stop in while we were walking around, on my birthday! How could I refuse? He spoiled me with a 9pc assorted chocolate bon bons/squares + 15pc assorted macarons + 25pc classic truffles box (Look, I'm the humble one and and only wanted the small 9-piece box!!) Thierry Atlan's story is awe-inspiring. The blonde woman helping us was so bubbly and helpful, even 30 minutes before close. She went above and beyond with her kindness and attentiveness for my birthday. Incredible selection of chocolate items including fruit bark, various chocolate-covered nuts and fruits, whole bars, clusters, etc. lots of grab & go options. They offer an eclectic assortment of square chocolates and macarons on display for the build-your-own boxes. I loved that they had multiple dark chocolate choices. Gorgeous, luxurious looking packaging; top notch choice for travel or gifting to those you loooove. Online shopping is available on their site. The "Gift Collections" tab offers something for every type of recipient. Enamored by the chocolates surrounding me, I didn't even realize they offered gelato until i looked through older Yelp photos?! Truffles had a thin, delicate shell with a sinfully decadent interior. I could probably eat 50 in a sitting and hate myself later. The few dark chocolate bon bon pieces were heavenly.. same with the macarons. Every single one was just.. ?! easily the best macarons I've ever eaten. Sooooo light, so airy. The fillings are FLAVORFUL! Exactly as each name implies. I stopped myself from eating 3-4 at a time because I wanted to savor them. Oof. Perfection.
google avatar

Yelp
Decent and beautiful confections, perfect for any occasion; to enjoy for oneself, or as a gift. Nothing particularly exceptional or out of the ordinary, but a good accompaniment prior to or after a meal.
google avatar

Charlene Y.

Yelp
I think Thierry Atlan has better macaron and better service than the other macaron shop 3 minutes away. The box closes, and there is a plastic that protects the macarons. Really helpful as I was walking all day, using the subway, and moving the box of macarons when I travelled in the bag. So, I really liked coming in to choose the berry flavors. I chose the 6 piece box. I think I picked Lychee, Strawberry, Raspberry, Violet Cassis, Passion fruit, and not pictured is Blueberry. The macarons are delicate to bite and fun to eat. I really savor the macaron slowly.
google avatar

Caroline N.

Yelp
My friend gave me a box of macarons as a gift. The box top was wrapped with a ribbon as a gift. It was a very nice touch. The macaron flavors really come through and it's not overly sweet. I can't wait to check out this place in person.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
These are some of the best macarons I've had! I love how there is a variety in flavors and it's not overly sweet. The 50 piece macaron box comes well packaged. I also had the orange chocolate sticks, they were also delicious and not overly sweet.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Best macarons around! My previous macarons spot closed down and I have been searching for a new place to bring my young daughter to who loves them. Boy am I glad I found this spot! She approves They also have an assortment of gelato. The Banana Passion fruit gelato was divine!

J D.

Yelp
Loved the macaroon gelato! Decently unique flavor. Very fast service. Store is small but nice.
google avatar

Liz K.

Yelp
These macrons are yummy and the shop is beautiful! There's a wide variety of flavors (mostly traditional). My only gripe is that some of the macarons are *not* vegetarian - they contain gelatin, which you'd only know by reading the ingredient list on prepackaged ones. The raspberry macaron is vegetarian, the vanilla is not.
google avatar

Yelp
I was just strolling around soho when I saw this super fancy shop and had to check it out! They have a whole bunch of macarons and chocolates and ice cream as well. The macarons were all displayed so nicely I had to get a small box to sample! I got the pistachio and omg that was so good! I also got the earl grey and the rose one. And the passion fruit one too. Macarons were all good and packaged so nicely so it'll be a great gift to someone as well. Will definitely come back to try some other flavors and get other stuff!

Yelp
Luxurious, very elegant and clean store. I love the layout of the store once coming in. The counters are on the right side complete with an espresso machine for coffee orders. I'm surprised that they offer samples (for macarons + ice cream). They offer bundle prices for macarons and chocolates. It's soooo refreshing, all the sorbets. They also had strawberry basil sorbet which was an interesting taste. I wanted to try the macaron madness ice cream but it contains dairy (recommended by store employees) T.T I decided to go with the small chocolate box ($10) and one scoop of mango sorbet ($5~). The colorful round chocolates had caramel and a burst of flavor in them. Orange- passionfruit caramel. Green- lime caramel. There was also a mix of dark and reg milk chocolate to choose from. I love the fact that once I opened the box, it was carefully and delicately presented and had a cute card in which all the chocolates had more in depth information. This store recently opened up right by Dominique Ansel Bakery here in Soho (literally around the block), do check out both locations when you get the chance! C:

Yelp
Friendly staff who will assist you with choosing macarons. I usually do not care for these but they were surprisingly not overly sweet. The price is also reasonable. It makes a wonderful present.

Yelp
Extremely impressed with this lovely shop. I was greeted immediately upon entering the shop. Everyone was friendly. The shop is clean and bright and the display cases are full of a mix of macarons, chocolates, and freshly made gelato. They also sell an assortment of other chocolates including chocolate covered almonds, chocolate barks, etc. The woman helping me was so lovely, she offered me a taste of a macaron (I chose the blood orange). It was fantastic, perfect texture, and so much flavor. I even told her that it was as good if not better than the macarons from Pierre Herme. I decided to go with a box of 4 (blood orange, apple, cookies and cream, and salted caramel). The cookies and cream was ok, I felt it needed something. I also grabbed a container of Fuilletine clusters. When I mentioned that I love Fuilletine, she kindly gave me a piece of the Fuilletine from the case (not the ones I purchased). It was delicious, it tasted fresh and it was so crunchy. I definitely will stop by again when I'm in Soho.

Yelp
This place is absolutely splendid! It's very elegant in every since of the word. The glass that encased the goods had literally no streaks or finger prints on it and it smelled like chocolate heaven. The space is a little tight if there are more than about 6 people in there, but don't let that deter you from going in! The man behind the counter last night was absolutely awesome and helpful. He was very knowledgable about the products and they also have chocolates, gelato and pre-packaged goods. This review is about the Macarons which were AMAZING! We got a box of 6 Macarons and which was only $19 before tax!!! We got the Cookies-n-Cream, Earl Grey, Lavender, Pistachio, Boston Creme, and Rose Lychee. Although we haven't finished eating all of them (still to eat: Rose Lychee and Boston Creme) - the others were ALL amazing and perfectly made macarons! The exception to this was probably the Lavender - but solely because of the flavor, everything was perfect. I am a huge lavender fan and it tasted very artificial. The pistachio, cookies-n-cream and Earl Grey tasted exactly like they should! I will absolutely be going back if I ever find myself back in NYC!

Cari R.

Yelp
After seeing someone visit on TikTok, I added this to my list of places to visit in NYC. I am very selective about my macarons and these were easily the best that I've ever had. World's better than Ladurée. The gentleman working was so welcoming and friendly. He offered us samples. Everything was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Stores like Thierry Atlan are what make NYC magic, special, and a delight to explore. While exploring West Village, I stumbled across a fairytale-like, ethereal space with beautiful decor and even prettier confections. TA makes a variety of desserts, but are probably most well-known for their macarons, chocolates, and ice cream. The intense chocolate was some of the finest chocolate ice cream I've had! Decadent, luscious, smooth, and a long lasting flavor. It's not overly sweet, yet it is well-balanced and makes you want more. The macaron (I got pumpkin spice for the season), was great. Beautifully colored and shaped, and more importantly, the texture was just great. Very soft, yet chewy, and you could really taste how fresh it was.
google avatar

Marietoni R.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place as we waited for restaurant reservations. Tried the gelato for a quick snack and it was divine. Got the cookies and creme small for $5, couldn't stop eating it after the first bite! So smooth and definitely an authentic cookies and creme flavor. Will go back to try their chocolates!
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
We did not plan to stop here, but their aesthetic storefront pulled us in. Their macarons were some of the best I've ever had. The sweetness was not overpowering and each bite was perfectly soft. My favorites of the bunch were the strawberry champagne, lavender, and lemon yuzu.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow!!! So happy I got to experience a business like Thierry Atlan! I would recommend this place to friends who are visiting NYC and want some macarons or chocolates. I haven't tried their full-sized chocolate products yet but had a sample of dark chocolate and it was absolutely delicious! Would go back to get some gifts for my dad. I was also not aware of the Meilleur Ouvrvier de France Chocolatier label and its significance, but I suggest you google it because it's an impressive title that Thierry has earned!! I tried their macarons and they come in nice gift sets. I dare say that their macarons are better than the ones in Laduree. The shells had a slight crispiness on the outside with a good crunch and are not too chewy on the inside. I really had a wow moment when I tried a sample in the store!! For flavors, you can't go wrong but I would stick to the flavors that you prefer. I'm not a fan of rose-flavored products because it sometimes feels like you're eating fragrance, but their rose lychee had a subtle rose flavor and I was pleasantly surprised. I also love the pistachio and birthday cake as well. I'm going to make it a goal of mine to try every flavor while I can as I'm only in town for a month. The inside is very clean and has a neat, modern decor with great lighting. The service is fantastic. My first visit was with a blonde gentleman and he was very patient while I was trying to gift a macaron set for a friend's special occasion. On my second visit, it was great with another lady sales associate but I do have to say that I was given a bag that was clearly used and scratched. I didn't realize it until I was in the subway and took a closer look. Luckily I didn't need that bag since I bought goods for myself, but I would hope to have new bags next time..

Yelp
Quickie review: I wanted ice-cream while art gallery-hopping in the area. The Cookies n Cream ice-cream is unusually powdery, but otherwise creamy and rich. Methinks that's real cookie powder on top. Also, the French guy behind the counter was the absolute nicest server ever.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Really yummy macarons! We got some of the Valentine's Day specials- the heart shaped strawberry champagne, the earl gray, the violet raspberry. Of the three, the earl gray was my favorite. All three macarons were really strong in their respective flavors and had the perfect chew to the cookie. I liked these better than Laduree because they were significantly less sweet. Service is so sweet here. Upon walking in, the lady offered us samples and we could choose between four flavors of macarons! I feel like that almost never happens at a nice macaron shop.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Such a cute addition to this neighborhood! I love macarons and by nature was very tempted to stop by and try these! I'm greeted right away by the colorful assortment of macarons ($2.90 per piece). I tried the earl grey, Boston creme, lavender, and passion fruit and all were delicious! I also tried a piece of their chocolate and it was delectable! I will have to come back to try some more flavors!
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Excellent bonbons. The chocolate is tempered to perfection, and the flavors are well balanced. The staff was helpful and engaging. The site itself was beautiful, bright, and clean. This was my first visit to the shop and won't be my last. I've tried chocolate from around the world. These bonbons are top tier.
google avatar

Patrick A.

Yelp
I walked in here randomly. Thee best! macaroons I've ever had and legitimately the most perfect cappuccino I've ever tasted. The espresso didn't taste burnt, the oat milk was cooked perfectly. The gentleman recommended the blood orange macaroon and it was incredible. The store felt very boutique and I loved that vibe, small clean and to the point.
google avatar

Angie T.

Yelp
This is a newly opened boutique in soho offering a wide range of macarons, different chocolate products, and a small selection of ice cream. I decided to go for the latter since it was warm out. The Strawberry Basil flavor was pretty refreshing. They top it with a macaron shell, which is a nice detail. The staff was attentive and friendly. I got to try a couple of flavors beforehand, including their 'Macaron Madness', which was pretty good! It's a more upscale store, good for gifts as their product is high quality and nicely packaged. I would like to come back to try the chocolates next - they're from a world famous master chocolatier after all!
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
I'm thrilled to have discovered this shop as they have exquisite French macarons, an assortment of delectable chocolates & ice cream (though I didn't get any at this visit). The attendant that assisted me was very friendly & helpful with putting together custom boxes of macarons & chocolates I selected as some were gifts. Each box came with a small QR code so you could see which flavor of each confection is. The aesthetic of the store is sophisticated & bright & I'm looking forward to return visits next time I'm in SoHo.
google avatar

Madeline R.

Yelp
Super friendly staff & amazing dessert options! Such a great place for gluten free! Will definitely go back!

Christopher S.

Yelp
A group of my friends was visiting NYC for the day,and was walking in SOHO and happened to stumble upon this GEM.To our delight of the window display,we were drawn in they had so many flavors .The young lady was so helpful and very educated on macaroons. I give them a 5 stars on taste and presentation, price is average with others....but worth it.a must see spot when in NYC...

Michael K.

Yelp
Compared to other chocolatiers of the same price points This was by far the worst, the chocolate was not fresh or improperly stored, the flavors were nothing spectacular, I was incredibly shocked at how little I enjoyed both the large milk, chocolate assortment, and the smaller, dark chocolate assortment
google avatar

Thy L.

Yelp
The macarons here are dare I say better than a well known nearby Parisian shop. We happened upon this beautiful shop while walking through SoHo. The macarons have the perfect texture and flavor and look impeccable! We always get vanilla and salted caramel and they come in a fancy "magnetic" box! Would definitely go back to try the chocolates and coffee as opposed to another place ;)
google avatar

Ren F.

Yelp
I suppose living in NY for the past 20 years, I've become disillusioned by store aesthetics. If your product isn't good, no amount of glitz and presentation will improve it. Their chocolates may be good back in Paris, but whatever they are doing in their Moonachie, NJ factory is not working. I got the simple chocolate bars...not good. Well-tempered chocolate exudes a certain sheen I've been told, nothing sheening here. I guess you can put your store in Soho and get all the suckers walking in oh and using soy lecithin as an emulsifier you'd think it would taste better. I'll stick to Bonnat for my chocolate fix!!

John L.

Yelp
Beautiful and clean store with amazing macarons. The staff were really nice and patient as we picked out our macarons. The packaging is very nice and keeps the macarons well-protected while shopping in soho until you are ready to eat them.

Edward S.

Yelp
Wow!!!! Came across as we were walking in the area and stopped in and tried the fresh mint chocolate - amazing! Came back next day and got 5 boxes to take home. Super friendly, beautiful shop. Amazing find - must try!

Celia I.

Yelp
Thierry Atlan's chocolates and macarons are the best in NYC. The boutique is super cute and super clean! My 7 years old daughter loves it and she usually is hard to please! I highly recommend it! Enjoy it!

Rebekah M.

Yelp
Everything is so delicious and it it's adorable! It's a tight squeeze but completely worth it. The macarons are divine and the ice cream is amazing. Don't skip over it!
