Unpretentious restaurant fixing up plant-based versions of classic Chinese dishes.
"You might think that taking your dog to a vegan restaurant will make you their least favourite parent. But at Tofu Vegan, you can get some delicious housemade silken tofu in Sichuan sauce, mock meats like Chongqing chicken, dim sum, and more plant-based dishes that may surprise you—and your dog-child—with how impressive they are. It’s a big-ish space, with tables spilling out onto the pavement, and it’s an excellent option when you’re around the Angel end of Upper Street." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"All day The mega popular vegan Chinese spot has a few locations (including Spitalfields and Golders Green) but it’s their original location in Angel where we find ourselves enjoying tofu and mushroom xialongbao most often. While their soup dumplings are good, if a little thick, it's Tofu Vegan’s wontons in house special sauce that are the must-order dim sum item. Thin wrappers packed with a mix of tofu, king horse mushrooms, and water chestnuts form the wonton while the sauce—a neon red chilli concoction—is fizzing, moreish, and completely gluggable." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak
"Tofu Vegan is a Chinese spot on Upper Street that’s heaving seven days a week, as everyone tucks into house-made silken tofu in Sichuan sauce, mock meats like Chongqing chicken, and dim sum like tofu and mushroom xiaolongbao. The space is big, so much so that it spills out onto the pavement, much like the sizzling fish-fragrant sauce that will likely fall from your greedy spoonfuls. " - jake missing
"This vegan Chinese spot on Upper Street is heaving seven days a week, as everyone tucks into house-made silken tofu in Sichuan sauce, mock meats like Chongqing chicken, and dim sum like soupy xiao long bao stuffed with tofu and mushroom. And it’s all really, really good. The space is so big that it spills out onto the pavement, much like the sizzling fish-fragrant sauce that will likely fall from your greedy spoonfuls. "Islington’s ingenious all-vegan Sichuan restaurant is about much more than tofu. This place takes mock meats and vegan substitutes to the next level, heightening dishes with peppercorns and chiles in the same way the city’s great non-vegan Sichuan restaurants have done over the last decade. Don’t miss Dongbei sweet potato noodles, hot and fragrant deep-fried asparagus, Chongqing-style “chicken,” Xinjiang-style cumin “lamb,” classic mapo tofu, and salt-and-pepper king oyster mushroom. The entire menu is lip-tingling umami heaven for vegan diners." - Adam Coghlan, Anna Sulan Masing, Chloe-Rose Crabtree
