Nestled in a strip mall, Tokyo Kalbi serves up exceptional grilled Japanese barbecue with charcoal-cooked meats and tasty appetizers that delight.
"Tokyo Kalbi is a little far away from the action on Sawtelle Blvd, but that shouldn’t detract from the fact it’s the best yakiniku option in the neighborhood. Apart from its gaudy Louis Vuitton x USDA Prime Beef wallpaper, there’s nothing super unique about this Japanese BBQ spot–it just serves high-quality cuts at an attractive price. For under $40, you can get a kalbi combo with marbled slices of short rib, skirt steak, and buttery rib eye that get dipped into a light shio sauce. And make sure to tack on the housemade gyoza and massive daikon and nori salad drizzled with kewpie mayo to your order. " - Brant Cox, Sylvio Martins, Arden Shore
"Tokyo Kalbi's yakiniku menu takes a variety of high-quality cuts and offers them in various prepared marinades, including spicy miso and a soy-based marinade. The meat quality is comparable to that of Tenraku in Koreatown, and the menu of yukkejang (spicy Korean beef soup) and bibimbap are definitely mighty familiar and the banchan are a little precious. But the meats are grilled over actual charcoals (a relative rarity) and a healthy bevvy of Japanese appetizers (don't skip the shishito peppers) will help get one’s yakiniku experience off on the right hoof." - Euno Lee
