The 15 Best Restaurants In Cape Town - Cape Town - The Infatuation

"Walking down bustling Bree Street, you could easily miss this place completely. And that would be a huge shame, because Tomson stands out in a city where the options for Chinese food are relatively one dimensional. The co-owner did a stint in Shanghai, and now serves up South Cantonese dishes like wontons floating in rich chili broth and delicately steamed hake in a ginger and spring onion sauce at this City Centre spot. By the time you finish your meal, you’ll be so glad you didn’t walk right by." - mary holland

"Walk past Tomson, set along the city’s buzzy Bree Street, and you might miss it. The Cantonese street food restaurant is small but oh-so-mighty. Owned by Andrew Kai, who named the restaurant after his father (as in Tom and son), the menu features a collection of moreish meals like pork and shrimp wonton dumplings, crispy pork belly, and roast Cantonese duck served with pancakes. Make sure you stop by for a glass of bubbly at the neighboring Leo’s Wine Bar beforehand." - Mary Holland

Really delicious Asian food! I was craving a bowl of broth noodles and saw that this place serves wonton noodle soup. So glad we came here! What a gem!! 💎🌟 We ended up ordering lots of dishes to try. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I had to stop myself from over ordering. What we ordered: house kimchee braised aubergine 🌟 Pork spring rolls 🌟 Chilli beef noodle soup 🌟 Pork wonton noodle soup Morning glory greens 🌟 Bowl of white rice The braised aubergine was extremely yummy! The food was all cooked fresh! We came on a Monday evening and it was busy! They didn’t have a table inside so we sat at the bar outside watching the kitchen. Service was great! The waitresses were friendly and polite. The chefs were also very nice. I asked for some chilli oil 🌶️ and they gave me a really big bowl of it! Very generous! Would love to come back and try other dishes on the menu! The white Chenin wine we had was also super tasty! 👌

Great Location, Food and Service! We had some of the starters and the Chili Beef as a main. All of the food was amazing and the Service was great. Will come back for sure!

My boyfriend and i went to Tomson about a week ago on a rainy day, we each enjoyed a delicious bowl of Wonton Noodle soup! Warm, umami and so satisfying! Would highly recommend!

My partner and I used to come here quite a lot and it never disappoints but this time sadly, it did. One of the reasons I love coming here is because of the intimate feel and decor. Duck was on the menu and some other new items. Most of the new items were not available but this rice paper roll was delicious. The dumplings are always consistent and tasty but it really fell flat with the duck and especially the pork. The pork was quite bad. As you can see in the picture, the pork belly isn’t cooked properly. It honestly tasted like cold fat. This used to be our favourite dish so we were disappointed. We got a duck wing and the couple next to us got the duck leg which is the cut you would usually serve. Don’t know if you can charge the same price when someone gets the wing and another gets the leg, two completely different cuts. I understand wastage is a factor but the wing was unpleasant. Just wasn’t great and would obviously have preferred the duck leg which I’m sure would be more tasty. Don’t think we’ll be back again and we used to go every second month 👎🏼

SO SO GOOD! The food was delicious and it was so fast. We sat at the bar and it was fun to watch the busyness in the kitchen. The smacked cucumbers, salt pepper prawns, duck dumplings, and Mongolian chicken were all phenomenal. Can’t wait to come back again.

We had the best time ever, as an abnormally large birthday group for Tomsons' intimate seating plan yet we were accomodated and looked after with such care and attention!. Our waitress - Phie was amazing, and we never went hungry or thirsty. We will all be back for sure!

The chilli beef noodle soup was really mediocre and full of sadness. The beef was tough, dry, and tasteless, and the soup base lacked taste and only had a few small scraps of cabbage floating in it. After having spent a month in Hong Kong and tasting the food there I was excited to learn that there was Cantonese restaurant in Cape Town. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case when it comes to noodle soups.

We’ve been loyal customers for quite some time and regularly order takeout—often once a week—as we live just upstairs at Tomson. We genuinely love the food and appreciate the quality and consistency that keeps us coming back. However, I feel it’s important to share that tonight’s experience was disappointing. The service we received from one of your long-standing waitresses left us feeling extremely uncomfortable. Her energy was noticeably unwelcoming—smiling in a way that felt forced and passive-aggressive, creating an atmosphere that made us feel as though our presence was a burden. This is not the first time we’ve felt this way when she’s served us, and it’s reached a point where it affects our overall experience. We want to continue supporting your restaurant because the food is truly excellent, but consistent negative energy from service staff makes it difficult to enjoy a meal out. We hope this feedback is taken constructively, and that some attention can be given to ensuring all customers feel genuinely welcome. Rather have friendly staff that’s suits the quality and standards xx
