The 15 Best Restaurants In Cape Town - Cape Town - The Infatuation

"Walking down bustling Bree Street, you could easily miss this place completely. And that would be a huge shame, because Tomson stands out in a city where the options for Chinese food are relatively one dimensional. The co-owner did a stint in Shanghai, and now serves up South Cantonese dishes like wontons floating in rich chili broth and delicately steamed hake in a ginger and spring onion sauce at this City Centre spot. By the time you finish your meal, you’ll be so glad you didn’t walk right by." - mary holland

The 18 Best Restaurants in Cape Town, South Africa | Eater

"Walk past Tomson, set along the city’s buzzy Bree Street, and you might miss it. The Cantonese street food restaurant is small but oh-so-mighty. Owned by Andrew Kai, who named the restaurant after his father (as in Tom and son), the menu features a collection of moreish meals like pork and shrimp wonton dumplings, crispy pork belly, and roast Cantonese duck served with pancakes. Make sure you stop by for a glass of bubbly at the neighboring Leo’s Wine Bar beforehand." - Mary Holland

This isn't a review, this is a love letter to the greatest restuarant in Town. So many people across different backgrounds can agree that Tomson has great food. This hole-in-the-wall focuses more on the food, rather than the aesthetics. There is so much to choose from and each dish is guaranteed to be delicious. Tomson is loved by Capetonians and is evident in it always been fully booked. I recommend you make a booking in advance should you wish to experience dinning here. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Asian food that's value for money.

Visited Tomson with a group of friend. A couple of us (including me) ordered Crispy Pork Belly. It was burnt and lacked flavor. Considering Tomson say they know what they are doing, please see the pictures - the fat is burnt to a point that the fat layer is hard. I told the host/waitress who then brought me to the counter to check with the check and the chef said that’s how they usually do it. Despite me saying that they were wrong, they still maintained that their food was fine. The other food ordered around the table was mid but not as bad as the pork Belly. For a R155, this was a sham.

Best Chinese in town with a great wine selection. 10/10 would recommend popping by :) Favs are: kimchi (best I’ve had), spring rolls, turnip cake, steamed fish, contonese chicken & wontons!

The food was incredible, especially the pork belly - so perfectly cooked. The lowlights were the drinks that were not cold enough (we ordered white wine and a beer) and the service - waiters were a little confused and kept forgeting our orders. Aside for that, it is completely worth the visit!

Decent Asian cuisine (yes, biased as I've lived in SEA for a while) in a cutesy small restaurant with outdoor seating. Our waitress wasn't exactly impressive in part because her response to our question of whether the tofu/shiitake wontons were vegan was 'yes, there's only a little egg in the dough's 🙄 Our plates/meals also arrived very out of sync from each other. I, for example, got my steamed rice 20min before I got my main course to go with the rice. Overall, an alright experience but not one of my top picks for Asian cuisine or restaurant experience in CT.

Really delicious Asian food! I was craving a bowl of broth noodles and saw that this place serves wonton noodle soup. So glad we came here! What a gem!! 💎🌟 We ended up ordering lots of dishes to try. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I had to stop myself from over ordering. What we ordered: house kimchee braised aubergine 🌟 Pork spring rolls 🌟 Chilli beef noodle soup 🌟 Pork wonton noodle soup Morning glory greens 🌟 Bowl of white rice The braised aubergine was extremely yummy! The food was all cooked fresh! We came on a Monday evening and it was busy! They didn’t have a table inside so we sat at the bar outside watching the kitchen. Service was great! The waitresses were friendly and polite. The chefs were also very nice. I asked for some chilli oil 🌶️ and they gave me a really big bowl of it! Very generous! Would love to come back and try other dishes on the menu! The white Chenin wine we had was also super tasty! 👌

What a fun, lively spot! Tomson has an amazing vibe and the place was buzzing. The Cantonese food was incredibly flavorful, and we had some great wine with our meal. We were gutted they ran out of the crispy pork belly, but it just gives us a solid reason to come back soon. Highly recommend!

Unfortunately the food was really not good! Noodles overcooked, supermarket Lao Gan Ma Chili Oil and all in all it was far away from good chinese (fusion) kitchen! The whole concept seems pretty cheap, like not having a fridge etc. which is also kind of vibe but then the prices need to match and they absolutely don’t for this quality of food. Also any good chinese restaurant should offer additional chili and vinegar on the tables!
