The Best Mediterranean Restaurants In SF

"Just a block away from the 16th Street Mission BART station is our go-to for giant falafel and shawarma wraps. The structural integrity of lavash gets tested with every one of these tahini-lathered roll-ups stuffed with onions, tomato, thinly shaved slices of chicken, lamb, or fried orbs of chickpeas. Our favorite is the Deluxe, which comes with all the fixings plus potatoes and chunks of eggplant that have been bathing in meat drippings. For a lavash-less deconstructed version, try the plates (only slightly less messy to eat). Seating is limited with a few indoor stools and a couple outdoor tables. We suggest asking for extra napkins and eating on the go." - ricky rodriguez, patrick wong, julia chen 1

One of SF’s Most Popular Falafel Shops Opens Second Location - Eater SF

"Truly Mediterranean, owner Walid Zeidan’s 'Mediterranean Delicatessen with a Special Touch,' has a second location to add to the 16th Street original he’s operated since 1992. The new shop is also on 16th, but way down in Mission Bay, at 900 16th St (between 7th and Mississippi). There, its menu of wraps, combo plates, and falafel appears the same, though the atmosphere is sleeker in a shiny new building." - Caleb Pershan

Google
I’ve eaten here a few times and have not had any issues up until tonight. The flavor is good until I bite into a big chunk of onion and tomato - very unpleasant. I don’t remember chunks of onion and tomatoes for all the times I’ve ordered the chicken shawarma. If the chunks are here to stay I’m not returning any more. The person who prepared it tonight needs training.

Google
This place has certainly improved their quality over the last few years. I will be going back the falafels are wonderful. I like the fact that I can eat a wrap and it doesn't drip all over. this time It didn't do that

Eihway Su

Google
Great regular falafel wrap. Appreciated nice service and just wrapped in aluminum and paper bag without excess packaging. Had falafels from here years ago, and it was great then, too. Unpretentious place. Looks like what I'd want in a mediterranean restaurant.

Google
Small narrow shop serving the best super deluxe falafel wraps. Light and crispy falafel. Egg plant, roasted potatoes. 12.99. Trust me on this. I can’t include pictures because I already ate it all

Olive Soap shop

Google
Have been here around 57 times and they Never disappoint, one time they accidentally forgot the falafel in my falafel wrap but fixed the order and it was no problem. I’m a big fan of the falafel lux (spicy) , everything about this place is great ! It’s healthy it’s delicious and high quality.

Google
We came here for the first time thinking it would be good. Over priced, didnt even get right order, chicken was some what cooked and we asked for pickles in the shawarma and what did we get no pickles and we asked them to not put hummus and tomatoes and you already know what they put in the shawarma. This is not the shawarma i know. Would go somewhere else unless its a last resort and you need shawarma reel bad.

Google
This place's name speaks for it's self. I dated a Middle Eastern woman, so I can identify the authenticity.🔥🔥🤌 This food is not to die for it's to live for

Google
Best Mediterranean food in have had Get the lamb kebab plate, just superb

Yelp
Stop in to grab a bite to eat before a show next door, and the food was so amazing and the service was great. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
excellent and great service , friendly staff , and delicious chicken wrap , strongly suggest the combo plate .

Yelp
What happened?! This place used to be my favorite. Now their servings have been split in half and prices have doubled. You pay for extra and you get nothing. Are there new owners or something? I know you have to pay your rent but you will LOSE CUSTOMERS when you have these kinds of business practices. We have gotten used to a certain quality of service in 20 years and this ain't it!

Yelp
Food 4/5 Was expecting a softer kind of pita bread wrap but it was on the harder/crunchier side. Got there around 3:30pm on a Sunday and they were out of the lamb already :( chicken was average and they put a lot of sauce in the wrap. Wrap has chicken, tomato, onions, and sauce. Definitely a place to stop by for a quick meal and will satisfy your cravings for Mediterranean food! Service 5/5 Service is great here! Everyone is helpful and they even gave us a falafel to try! Ambiance 4/5 A very small shop with ~6 counter seats. There are a couple tables outside but the street is very busy and a little smelly (mission area).

Yelp
SF Vegan Falafel Hunt : Used to live nearby 5+ years ago & wasn't impressed w/ the falafel. Two Problems (aside from staff not seeming happy to be there): A) Unfortunately flavors have diminished more since [smaller size, no more hint of coriander seed, tasted of oil, no longer offer pita as an alternative to lavash]. Didn't hate it but was more like a veg sandwich-- not reminiscent of a falafel flavor-wise. Cucumbers are always my least favorite filling. The hot sauce & tahini were the only saving grace B) Tabouleh.More pissed at myself for not asking to see the container. Umm-- THAT IS *NOT* 1 pint (16oz). SEE PHOTO . I generously filled the tub to the brim of which my salad was loosely packed. Not even close to 15 oz. Can't believe I spent 10 bucks.. nearly the cost of another sandwich for a scant serving of salad!! Not cool. Even worse.. since when did they start adding cucumber to Tabouleh (cheap filler). Not cool. Not a Truly Mediterranean thing to do to tabouleh. C) Insult to injury. There was a fee to use my card??

Yelp
Solid late night spot, that's reasonably priced. Parking nearby can be hard to find, and the limited seating makes it more of a Togo spot. That being said the falafels are quite good and they generally come out piping hot. I always get the plate either chicken or beef, tried the shawarma but liked it less. Pro tip: when ordering a combo plate ask for half baba ganoush and half hummus, the variety is nice. Service is always friendly, they typically give you a free falafel while you wait, and normally this place is pretty quick which I can appreciate. Probably not your date spot, but a good late night drunchies spot. Recommend.

Yelp
Got the deluxe lamb schwarma wrap. It was a pretty huge wrap stuffed with plenty of meat. I got the deluxe because I was intrigued by the fried eggplant and the fries that are added in the wrap. It was good but i'm just a tad disappointed there wasn't much of it. I also tried the chicken version and I'd say I prefer that over the lamb. The lamb wrap had a tough bits I was not very fond of texture-wise.
google avatar

Kamy T.

Yelp
A go-to place in the Mission for a lamb shawarma wrap! Falafels are fresh and the owner sometimes gives you a free falafel while you wait for your food. The inside space is a bit tight, but there are a few tables outside to sit at. There are some homeless people around who may aggressively ask you for some food. Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
I rarely order Mediterranean since I never remember which restaurant is my fave. Writing this review so I have it logged. BEST FALAFELS!! What I Ordered: + Lamb Kebab Plate; 3.5/5 + Falafels; 5/5 + Tabouleh; 3.5/5 I love falafel and tabouleh, probably my favorites in Mediterranean cuisine. Their FALAFELS are crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. If oil is the secret, then I don't wanna know. The paper bag it came in for my delivery order was soaked in oil. The TABOULEH is good, but the cucumber chunks are too large. There was another Mediterranean spot that made better tabouleh where the ingredients were chopped to a finer degree. LAMB KEBAB PLATE was on the drier side, but I kind of expected that, so I wasn't disappointed. The hummus is amazing! After looking at the pictures on Yelp, I'll be trying the lamb shawarma plate next. Or maybe the wrap.
google avatar

Jory H.

Yelp
Had food delivered. Food was Just ok. I like the lentil soup and the lamb meat was juicy but my gyro was lacking lettuce, sauce and other toppings. It felt like I was eating straight meat wrapped in pita bread. Also, no silverware or napkins -had to run out to get some.

Yelp
Let me tell you about my dad. He immigrated to the United States in the 80's for college, went back to the Middle East, started his life, married my mom and had my oldest brother and I. We moved to California and we've seen the culinary terrain evolve and the excitement of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors boom. Truly Mediterranean has been around longer than I have, and every time I go I'm met with not only a massive hit of the most amazing smells I've smelt, but one of the kindest staffs ever. You can tell when a staff is happy, if the line goes out the door, they're slammed with orders, and everyone's laughing, having a good time, and is serious about the food, you know you're in a well run establishment. Skip going to western falafel spots and get something true and authentic. The house sauce for the falafel is amazing and rivals a classic tahini! I always go for a chicken or beef wrap and I take some falafel and tabbouleh home! With limited indoor and a small out door seating, I'm always more than happy to eat as I stand. The amazing Anthony Bourdain has come and shared such good words about truly Mediterranean, and if that means anything to you, you should experience it for yourself. The vibe is amazing, the flavors are impeccable, and if you ever walk by and see a line out the door, go stand in it!

Yelp
I've been coming here on and off for years now whenever I visit the bay . And hands down one of the best falafels I've ever had. Maybe before they were a bit bigger and stuffed more , but still a good size and filling ! Usually quick Freindly service , inside is pretty small so I usually take a seat outside and take in the atmosphere. It does seem to be some changes that happened but overall I'll continue to come here whenever in town for a delicious falafel wraps

Brooke F.

Yelp
Used to love this place but last two trips here changed my mind. The food is so bland. Is there a salt shortage? Lamb was DRY. So DRY. Tabouli was mushy and lacked lemon. Didn't come with tzatziki or hot sauce as usual. Also no napkins. A waste of money. Won't be back.
google avatar

Ed G.

Yelp
This place NEVER disappoints. The food here is always fresh and taste great, in my opinion this is the best Arab Middle Eastern restaurant in the city hands-down, its always consistent so you can always the same quality and taste. I ordered shawarma plate, chicken was cooked perfectly and rice to meat ratio was great. The only thing that I can think of is the portions of baba ghanouj and tabouli was bit small. I ordered late night so maybe they were out of it, also they forgot they put the sauces I requested which is not a big deal. This is honestly a staple of SF, if you ever come visit you should def give them a try. Also, forgot to mention the owner is a nice guy! Very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my go-to order place through Grubhub nowadays. I love their wraps. I've been getting food from them since the 90s (the days of flannel and dial-up). My loyalty has been richly rewarded over the years, with barely a misstep to mar my experience. Normally exceptional food. I've hardly ever been disappointed. Favorites have been Chicken Shawarma Wrap, Deluxe Lamb Shawarma Wrap, Feta Cheese Wrap, Falafel Regular Wrap, 1/2 pint of hummus, and 1 pint of Lamb Shawarma Meat. I discovered their Feta Cheese Wrap by accident when Grubhub delivered the wrong order to me. I know it doesn't sound like an exciting wrap, but Wow! It was amazing, and I got it for free. Occasionally their lamb could be overcooked and dry, but for the most part they have been consistently great! I haven't gotten better Mediterranean food anywhere else in San Francisco.
google avatar

Sofia R.

Yelp
This place has amazing falafels, I was in the mood for some quick mediterranean food and found this place on yelp. Thank you yelp, this place was such a gem. Great food, quick, tasty and well priced. The hummus had great flavor and tasted homemade, so good and the portion was just right.
google avatar

Eric N.

Yelp
It's my 7th year in San Francisco, and these guys still make 'The Best Hummus' in town, which gives me a reason now to get down to it and Yelp about it so that this not-so-hidden gem could be your next best find to beat that awful hunger sinisterly capruring your mind! It's the kind of typical boutique Lebanese or Turkish corner grill - Which had successfully survived the pandemic - serving hungry people in a lively neighborhood offering them options to experience serious deliciousness for such good prices in the concept of fast-food while not compromising a bit of the nutritious quality you would realistically want to set your expectations of anticipation on a reasonable level, from such fast prepared food, including but not limited to various dips, falafel, shawarma, kabab platters, wraps and so on and so forth!.. Therefore with regards to their style of SERVICE, if you are in a hurry or experiencing the kind of hard-to-manage hunger, then in those cases you might want to be a little prepared and order enoughly ahead of time to prevent the possibility of blaming them for their pace as your hunger turns into hanger! Bear in mind that there's a serious DEMAND for this business; and you won't be the only one waiting to be fed; so please order ahead. Would you please give me your WORD to not ever upset such dedicated, generous (Simply place an order and see their portions for yourself) and hard-working food service workers by reflecting your inability to manage your hunger on them? I thank you all in advance as a food service veteran, myself. And know that if I do thank you, that I TRÜLY do.

Abed N.

Yelp
The staff and owner was amazing very humble and great customer service very good food

Yelp
This place probably has one of the best falafels I've had in my life. It gives off a very hole in the wall type of vibe, but the food is great. I ordered some falafels a la carte, with some pita, hummus, and tabbouleh. The falafel is perfectly crispy and has that vibrant green color that a falafel should have. It comes with tahini and spicy tahini sauce which pairs great with the falafel itself. The hummus is super flavorful and creamy. The tabbouleh is nothing really special, just a refreshing side to have along side of your falafel. As for the pita, it was a bit of a disappointment. I found the pita to be a little tough and flat. It was more of a lavash if anything. Other than that, the falafel is to die for!!
google avatar

Brandon H.

Yelp
Warning: portion sizes for sides are FALSE AND MISLEADING We ordered an order of falafel, pita bread, 1 pint of rice, and 1 pint of the lamb shawarma and upon getting home and checking the container they were put in, we realized that the containers looked small. This triggered me to pull out a measuring cup and upon dumping the contents of the container into the measuring cup (and filling the container with water and repeating the process,) we realized that the containers only hold 3/4 pint. At best, this is a case of severe negligence in choosing the proper sized container (though I'm fairly certain when you buy these, they tell you the capacity) at worst, the owner is purposely scamming people. Given the containers top out at 12 oz, you can't even use the excuse of "maybe you tamped down the food you got to make it more dense." I was going to leave it at 1 star, but the food was tasty (rice was seasoned well and the falafel was great,) and so I'm going to give them 2 stars, but the scamming on portion sizes is not cool.
google avatar

Atosa T.

Yelp
One stars goes away only because today was rainy in the city and this place did not cover their patio with umbrellas , we sat under the rain and ate our food. Food is good , please try lamb shawarma.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
Wanted to update my review as this has quickly become my go to take out spot. Everything you'd want in a grab and go takeout spot: great prices, good food, big portions, and quick service. Out of the Mediterranean restaurants in Mission, this is one of the only casual no frills spots around. It offers consistently good food at a great value. I especially love their hummus, and their tahini and hot sauce makes any dish better!
google avatar

Steph K.

Yelp
Delicious healthy meal! Ordered the Chicken Shawarma Plate which comes with hummus, taboulee, roasted tomato and sauces. Added pita. Lamb shawarma wrap was tender and nicely seasoned. Highly recommend the house-made lentil soup! Ordered Pistachio Bakalava for dessert. Delivery was quick and order was accurate. Will get dinner here again! Thanks!
google avatar

Omid K.

Yelp
I wasn't sure what happened last time I was there but it's because the old owners and managers are gone. That's why nothing is the same anymore except for the name.
google avatar

Kristen L.

Yelp
Came on a Sunday night with some friends. As we were waiting for our food, they gave us a falafel to try and it was one of the best falafels I've eaten! It was moist on the inside and had good texture and flavor. And really nice to them to give us a sample while we were waiting! I ordered the lamb kabab wrap, which comes with lamb, tahini, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers on lavash. The flavors were really good, and the wrap had a nice, comforting feel to it. The lamb itself was a little too tough, though, which made it hard to eat the wrap because it was hard to bite into the lamb. Overall, though, solid. The workers were so friendly here! There is street parking available, but we had to walk a couple blocks. It's a pretty small place and there is no seating inside, but this place would be good for takeout (which is what we did).
google avatar

Angelo C.

Yelp
------------------LOCATION: 5/5---------------- --------------------FOOD: 5/5------------------- Conveniently located in the Mission and it's perfect because of its close proximity to bars and it being open until midnight. -------------------SERVICE: 5/5------------------ Very friendly staff -----------------ATMOSPHERE: 4/5--------------- It's a tight space, but my partner and I ended up eating outside instead --------------------PRICE: 5/5-------------------- Very affordable food and it's also tasty! I had their chicken shawarma wrap and it was filling. =============OVERALL: 4.8/5.0=========== I'd highly recommend going here and I would definitely come back. Oh, try their falafel.
google avatar

Jon E.

Yelp
This place is probably the closest to an England chipper / New York food truck approach to a shawarma / kebab that I've had in my 15+ adult years in San Francisco. I'm a huge fan of middle eastern flavors, and I lived I England, visited France and Germany a lot. I think if you're looking for a more Israeli approach to this cuisine, Beit Rima, Oren's, and others are more that style. For me, Truly is my jam and absolutely a delicacy. Though the potatoes could be closer to French fries ;)
google avatar

Bassam S.

Yelp
Food: lamb shawerma is good. Chicken not so good Service is five stars Ambience: not suitable for sitting down for big groups but u can eat there on bar chairs
google avatar

Jaq O.

Yelp
Falafel and shawarma shop located in the heart of the Mission. Although seating is limited, we've always seemed to luck out on a seat. They offer free falafel as you order, which is kind of them. My go-to order is the kefta plate. The beef is super tender and their hummus is SO good
google avatar

Sky S.

Yelp
Came here and the food was incredibly salty though I give them credit that their food is fresh tasting. The amount of salt they add to their food is very unpleasant. You can't really enjoy the dish. I did get their house fresh carrot juice and that was pretty good.
google avatar

blaine s.

Yelp
Good food, small portions mezze plate. Need more if everything in larger container. Fresh and tasty appetizer combo.
google avatar

Nick W.

Yelp
This place is exactly what it seems, quick ez simple I got the lamb shawarma and it was doppppe. Hands down one of the best Mediterranean food places in the mission. Didn't give me napkins or utensils. But provided them upon asking. Was delicious
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
Truly Mediterranean is truly tasty. Must order: Chicken shawarma plate or chicken shawarma wrap. It's a LOT of food that will for sure fill you up. FYI they do not serve pita bread with the plate entrees. I must've missed it on the list of extras when I placed the order on Doordash... but just know that it's an extra cost. I believe it's $1 per pita, which isn't bad at all.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Amazing chicken shawarma deluxe wrap - the wrap was so thin yet fluffy and slightly crunchy, never had eggplant in a chicken wrap, definitely added a nice touch. Eggplant itself was very soft and worked well with everything inside. Got the spicy version that ended up more mild than spicy, but was delicious nonetheless. One star deduction - wish they charged the same amount as they advertised on the menu - the menu showed $12.99 but it's actually $13.99. No biggie but wish they would update their menu accordingly.
google avatar

Raian N.

Yelp
The falafel here is so crispy!! We were craving a quick late night snack and the falafels were the perfect thing to get. We got hot & fresh falafel made right in front of us and we enjoyed it so much!
google avatar

Sandra R.

Yelp
Very cute hole in the wall with nice decor! Not much indoor seating but they have a few outdoor tables. Amazing falafel! Very fresh and delicious. Service was so friendly and even gave us falafel to try for free while waiting in line! Recommend!!
google avatar

Elly R.

Yelp
Food is really good! Calling in on some evenings can be challenging but they are quick! Food is great, the people work here are warm and I would would always recommend.
google avatar

Amber R.

Yelp
I have finally made it to this place! After hearing so many good things! As soon I walked in I was tested with hot fresh flafel.the best I have ever had! The staff were super nice! The tall guy there had the most sexy eyelashes I've ever seen! I chatted with him I was staring at his gorgeous eyes n eyelashes as long I could. Besides that. On professional note thier flafle wrap and side of hummus is heavenly excellent and it's my lunch spot now!
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
This place is so good! It's definitely more of a grab and go type place because of the busy neighborhood and limited seating but my small group of 3 was able to snag a table outside! The food was amazing and the staff was very nice as well! I'll be coming back--via transit because parking is a nightmare
google avatar

Ivan V.

Yelp
The food was inedible. The falafel deluxe had some sort of grit in it, as if the the cook mopped the lavash with the floor. The hot sauce tasted more vinegary than hot and was distasteful. At THE BOTTOM OF THE WRAP, I FOUND CHICKEN IN IT! Very off putting for a vegan. To add insult to injury, the cashier charged me a $.53 surcharge to use my debit card, yet NOWHERE in this hole in the wall posted about the surcharge. The place has gone to the dogs since COVID. The tall attractive swarthy young man years ago was personable, always smiling at and treated me as if I was a regular customer. I wasn't. He's nowhere to be seen like the posted sign about a $.53 debit surcharge. Maybe it's under different management because at the entrance an electronic ordering machine stands and makes the place less ADA compliant than it was before. It confused me because I didn't know whether to order at the machine or at the counter. The counter unintellince beckoned me over to the register. I called the restaurant about an hour later to query him about whether they put chicken in the felafel deluxe now. He claimed the felafel deluxe was vegan and acted incredulous about my claim. After I told him I wouldn't be back, I hung up. I won't be back. Buyer beware and wary. Btw, if every custom pays an undisclosed $.53 surcharge because the management passes this bank fee on to 50 customers daily, they make an extra $50. Quite a scam to do business without disclosure and for customer convenience to use debt cards.
google avatar

Madhu J.

Yelp
One of the traditional, no frills middle eastern restaurants in San Francisco. Even the great Anthony Bourdain has checked out this place and it still remains a hole in the wall kind of place.
google avatar

Assad S.

Yelp
First time eating at this place and it's not good at all the falafel sandwich all it had that cucumbers and a little bit of hummus in it and two pieces of tomato we bought three sandwiches and three dozen falafel was over $90. What a rip off.

Kaitlin C.

Yelp
Ordered the Kefta Kebab Plate and Chicken Shawarma plate. Both came with a cucumber or tabouli salad, and hummus. Overall solid plates where all pieces were appropriately portioned and worked in harmony. The sauces to me can make or break the dish, and they were delicious (I would probably ask for more next time since they were kind of small taking them to go)! Very friendly staff who gave me a sample falafel while I was ordering - made me wish I ordered the falafel! Limited seating, some diner style indoors and a couple of tables outdoors. Sitting outside in the afternoon looked like the move. I'd visit again!

Nick R.

Yelp
Not great. Total rip off price wise. 18$ for kabob?!! Makes you not want to tip. This place was waaaaay better pre-CoVid
google avatar

Tareq M.

Yelp
Five stars all the way from a Middle-eastern person who knows what Falafil is...!!! I had flail in a lot of Arabian countries, and I can say this place Falafil and Shawarma is by far the absolute BEST...!!!!! The food is always fresh and made to order. The place is super clean. The staff is very friendly. The food is delivered fast. I come here every Saturday and crave their food all week long. This place is the highlight of my weekend. I got to meet the owner a few times, and what an amazing gentleman he is. If you want an authentic Arabian food experience, this is the place to go to. I highly recommend this place :)

Ramzi A.

Yelp
When you go in for lunch. You're mostly eating the meat left over from the previous day. Their baklava is nasty and the staff isn't friendly.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Ordered two deluxe wraps - one chicken and one lamb. Deluxe means that eggplant and French fries are added to the wrap, but barely! I watched him add the deluxe additions, and it was so little! Literally 2 French fries were added. Feel like I was cut short in that regard. Both were good but the chicken was far more superior. The onions could use more cooking, and there could be more tomatoes added to cut the heavy taste from the spreads and meat in the wrap.

Ash M.

Yelp
Great food. You get more than you pay for. I love this place. The Chicken Shawarma is fantastic
google avatar

Zonda F.

Yelp
Way overdue review, I have been enjoying this place since 1997 and it's one of the very few spots where you can get a truly tasty authentic Shawarma. It's the best whole in the wall SF bay area can offer. Staff are usually very nice and friendly.
