Tsumo Review - Kips Bay - New York - The Infatuation

"A night at Tsumo in Kips Bay can feel similar to most of the budget-friendly omakase spots in the city—they charge a pretty low $58 for the whole experience. After waiting in a room that’s dressed in a bamboo and Japanese wood joinery facade, you’ll be brought into a room with two 12-seat sushi bars, which is pretty different from the tiny, 8-12 seat shoebox counters you usually see at under-$100 omakase spots in the city. Over a short-feeling hour, they serve 12 pieces of nigiri garnished with things like fried shallots and a pickled yuzu condiment, and a toro hand roll. The sushi is just fine, but if you’re looking for an inexpensive spot with a decent sized group, Tsumo is a good option. photo credit: Will Hartman" - Will Hartman

Had an absolutely amazing omakase experience here! 🍣✨ Chef Henry is incredibly skilled and thoughtful — from start to finish, every dish was perfectly balanced and beautifully crafted. The fish was unbelievably fresh, the knife work so precise, and the seasoning and textures were spot on. Each bite felt like a little surprise of flavors. What I really appreciated was how Chef Henry took the time to introduce each course, sharing the story and inspiration behind the dishes. It made the whole experience not only delicious but also meaningful. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it easy to relax and fully enjoy the meal. Highly recommend booking here!!

Google
Tsumo Omakase was such a great experience! We did the omakase and everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Henry was our sushi chef and he was amazing — super friendly, explained every piece in detail, and made the whole experience even better. The sushi he prepared was absolutely delicious, and you can tell he puts a lot of care into his work. Next time we come, we’ll definitely ask for Chef Henry again. Highly recommend him if you visit!

Every dish was absolutely delicious! Chef Andy thoughtfully explained the preparation of each piece of sushi, making the experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant surprised me with ice cream for my birthday, which was a lovely touch. The ambiance was great, warm and welcoming. Highly recommended!

Google
It’s one of the best omakase experiences I’ve had. They also got us an ice cream at the end because I told them we were celebrating our proposal. My partner is allergic to shell fish and they were able to accommodate, which was great! So a lot of people will be waiting at the same time as you, that’s because the omakase is held in batches and people are seated together. It lasts for about an hour. Do try the drinks, they are good, pairs well with the food. The atmosphere might seem intense at first with all the people facing each other, so I’d recommend going with someone. Almost everyone was in a pair, and I don’t think I say any big parties. Our chef was amazing, they serve 4-6 people at a time. We paid a fixed amount, had an option to buy some of the rolls after the courses. Overall 10/10

Google
Tsumo was recommended by a friend and we did the $58 omakase - 13 pieces. It was so delicious we ended up ordering more so we exceeded that $58 easily. Jonathan was our sushi chef and he was great! The atmosphere was good however it can get really loud at the waiting area when everyone arrives at the same time. Highly recommend!

I celebrated my birthday here just two days ago with my bf. This was our first omakase experience and I’m happy to say the bar is now very high. Our chef Ken took great care of us and provided high quality service both in food and in conversation. He was very kind and pleasant to talk to. Ken was very knowledgeable and was able to provide insight to everything we ate and answered my boyfriend’s MANY questions haha. I got to try Uni for the first time here and it was delicious— some might even say sushi ice cream, which is true! They even brought out some ice cream to sing me happy birthday which was nice. Thank you for making my day special! 🎉🎂🎈🙂‍↕️🍱🍣🐠

Google
Highly recommended! Me and my friends had a very lovely night at Tsumo. Our chef was so friendly and fun to chat with. He was also enthusiastic about each piece he served. The staff were extremely attentive and kind. And OF COURSE!! The fish was extremely fresh, had great texture and taste, and I nearly cried at how lovely they were. The yellowtail, lean tuna, and chu toro blew my mind. If you’re looking for an affordable and high-quality omakase, this is the place! Of course, the bill goes up if you get a la carte at the end, but it is not necessary to do so. I definitely indulged, though. Too good to pass up!

Google
I celebrated my birthday here and was seated at Chef James' section. Every course was amazing. He spent so much time and put so much care into each course, it was all so meticulously well-prepared! He was even able to translate the names of the dishes into Chinese for my mom and I. He notified our waiter that it was my birthday and they even gave us an ice cream to end the night. The ambiance was perfect, the fish were fresh, the rice delicious. I looked forward to every course, and each delivered. I'm so glad I came to Tsumo for my first omakase experience!

Yelp
Went here for the first time on 5/8. The food was so delicious and Chef Simon was a vibe! For the price of $58, it was one of the best omakase i have had. I got the Wagyu Caviar Truffle a la carte.... to die for!!!!! Will be coming back soon with more friends to introduce to Tsumo. Here are some pics!

Yelp
This was my first time trying omakase...and I got to admit it did not disappoint. I tried the 11-course menu for lunch and the price was reasonable for omakase. The fish quality was superb and I would definitely go here again! I recommend if you are still hungry to get extra rolls. The chef was so nice and great at explaining each sushi. He was friendly !! You should make a reservation and overall great vibes.

Yelp
One of my first omakase experiences and definitely a good start. This is some of the best for a good deal in New York. For 13 courses, 12 pieces, and 1 handroll it came out to about $63 after tax and tip. Which really you aren't going to find better anywhere for this quality. Toro is always my favorite, so naturally, the chu toro stood out to me as well as the kanpachi, and of course, the toro handroll. I really don't think any of the add-on pieces are necessary. I was comfortably full when leaving, not overdone at all. The dining experience takes about 60-70 minutes but that pace felt appropriate and not dragged on to me. I would recommend and would consider going back.

Yelp
I had a pretty disappointing experience here. While the price was good for what we got, the servers kept rushing us to finish our food -- they would stack multiple pieces of sushi on our plate to make us eat faster, come around multiple times to ask us if we were done with our sake and try to pour more in our glasses even when we said "we are taking it slow", and would mumble some of the description of the pieces to us while me and my friend were still chatting to sort of just "do their job" of explaining what the piece was without giving us a second to enjoy our food. On top of that, I said I do not like ebi, and they replaced it with kanpachi... which is not only a piece that is cheaper than the Ebi in price, but also is a repeat of another piece on the menu! I ended up eating two kanpachis (the only different was a small topping), which I was pretty disappointed by. Typically, when I cannot eat a certain fish, the chef replaces it with something else so I can get the true omakase experience, instead of having me eat two the same piece. Lastly.... the rice was extremely loose and kept falling apart.

Yelp
Tsumo was a vibe for sure. Unexpected and unique in its own way, yet still very different. The price for an 8-course meal was still reasonable for a night out, despite being in the heart of the city. Have I had better? Yes! But was the dining experience worth it? Absolutely! Our chef was also very friendly and made our experience even better.

Yelp
This place was quite the experience. I came here with a party of six because this omakase was recommended by friends and social media. Food: 5/5 We were excited to try all the varieties of sushis and nigiris. My favorites were the chu toro and Wagyu. The meal with drinks came out to about $80 per person which was great given the high quality of fish and the attention to detail the Chef puts in. If you come here, I recommend getting the Omakase. Service: 5/5 The chef was great and explained all of the sushi and the accompany toppings. The food is made right in front of you so it is a dinner and a show. Our waiters were attentive and refilled water once our glass got empty. I recommend coming here for the omakase but also take some time to admire the delicacy and attention to detail when handling the fish. Ambiance: 5/5 This place was perfect for omakase. It was small and intimate yet big enough to seat large parties. I would recommend this place for a date night or to celebrate special occasions.

Yelp
Nice sushi bar with good atmosphere. Sushi is fresh and tasty but little small. Maybe it's for lunch menu. Also, the rice is falling apart every time we pick up the sushi. Service is good and attentive. Not bad for a quick lunch.

Yelp
$58 for 13 courses - a solid NYC Omakase place! My group of 3 had a reservation for 7:30pm; we came around 7pm to checkin and they put us in this front waiting area. Each dinner wave is 75 minutes and they serve checks to people after their limit has been reached. The staff were friendly: definitely on the younger side. We also got a Yuzu Cocktail and Lychee Cocktail; both were very sweet and you couldn't taste much of the alchohol. Sashimi was fresh and my favorites were O-toro and Chu-toro! Their flavors are more basic but still good quality.
google avatar

Melisa M.

Yelp
sooo good!! Everything that they gave us was so yummy. There is a 90 minute timed service so make sure to finish eating before that 90 minutes is up. There is only 9 seats inside so it's not the biggest but it was the perfect amount of people. Make sure to make reservations beforehand as well. The sushi chefs were so sweet and did an amazing job. Also BYOB at this place. Will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Return or not return? Return. Mandarin speaking staff, polite and professional. Expect to still feel hungry when you leave the 60 minutes efficient 13-course dinner service. For price, $58 + ~$10 in some absurd NY tax, can't beat it for NYC. The last 2-courses were clearly the weakest. Wagyu blah. Kanpachi and Toro were faves. Regardless, clear attention to quality. Last thing you notice is if you're over 30, you'll be on the old side for demographics.

Yelp
A solid spot for affordable omakase -- $58 for 13 courses, best deal I've found. They're pretty traditional (fish, wasabi, rice) but have fun toppings like onion crunch, fried leek, pickled daikon. My favorite bites were Chu Toro Truffle, Scallop with Yuzu Chili, Salmon with Leek -- everything was great. The chef here was clearly an expert at his craft and so fun -- we love Simon! Bonus points for printing out the menu in order because I like knowing what I'm eating.

Yelp
1st time here, 2nd omakase experience. 5/5 11- course omakase ($48)- This was filling enough for us, but may not be for most other people 5/5 seared o toro- sooo buttery, rich, heavenly, melt in your mouth- foodgasm. 5/5 seared- yellowtail - anything seared is amazing cuz of that smoky flavor 5/5 kanpachi w/ crispy onion- The crispy onion tastes like sour cream & onion chips, so good. 5/5 salmon w/ dried leek - I love anything onion, scallion, leek, chive flavored. 4/5 botan ebi & scallop- wasabi too strong 3/5 ikura- strong & a bit salty cuz of the roe. Everything else was also really good: madai, zuke akami, unagi & toro hand roll. I'd def go back.

Yelp
I came here for my birthday! Overall good experience - fish was fresh and tasty. Great deal for the price - we were not stuffed but satisfied.

Yelp
Probably the best 13 course omakase you'll find for this price! We've had more expensive omakases that deliver the exact same level of flavor and dining experience. Service was attentive & the chefs were both friendly and knowledgeable. The mood and setting was perfect for date night. Highly recommend if you are on a budget!
google avatar

Yelp
I want to say for the price it was a good deal, as far as the quality it was average. We paid $58 for the 13- course omakase. You can also do a la carte after if you want, they have specials to choose from. We opted out. Considering the chef was meh, not really personable as other chefs around us. My top 3 favorites was the botan ebi (creamy texture for sweet shrimp ) , zuke akami & o toro. The staff was pretty quick with getting us water etc. the atmosphere was modern and spacious. There was 3 other tables next to us probably for about 30ish people ? With 3 chefs per pod I want to say. I've heard great things about other locations but thankfully NYC has plenty of other omakase options to try!
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to snag a reservation for dinner on a Saturday night. I don't usually opt for omakase just because I find it's super expensive for not that much food. Tsumo was affordable (as far as omakase goes) especially for the quantity of food + ambiance. Fish was fresh and it was fun watching them prepare each dish in front of you!
google avatar

Yelp
Located in Kips Bay, this is a solid omakase spot, and I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. I booked mine two weeks ahead, which wasn't too difficult, but I'd suggest reserving 1-2 weeks in advance to be safe. For lunch, it was 11 courses for $48. After tax and tip, it came out to around $62. The entire dining experience lasts about an hour. - Madai - Yellowtail - Botan Ebi** - Ikura* - Scallop* - Kanpachi - Zuke Akami - O Toro* - Salmon* - Unagi* - Toro Handroll *Favorites I'd definitely come back, but I'd also be eager to try out other places.

Yelp
A great bang for the buck. Presentation great fish fresh service spot on. Interior as minimalist as it gets.

Yelp
$58 for 13 course omakase! This place is so worth the price. All the pieces were fresh and a good size cut. The only thing I didn't really like was the uni, they said it was from Maine. My friend said it's usually Hokkaido uni, so I was a bit disappointed that they changed it to Maine uni that evening. I also asked to substitute the ikura piece and he gave me another salmon w/ fried leek piece which was delicious. It was my friend's birthday as well and she got a scoop of coffee ice-cream which I found strange, at other places, it's usually either vanilla/chocolate/strawberry/green tea. My friend did also mention that the UWS location gave her friend a handroll for her birthday, which is def more worth. The servers were nice and they constantly refilled my water. The place was dimly lit and they have plenty of seating. Overall great omakase spot, will definitely be coming back.

Lauren L.

Yelp
The omakase was good for the price, but the service was honestly terrible. The portions are very small. The chef was kind and welcoming, but the rest of the staff were rude and dismissive. I was celebrating my best friend's birthday and we brought a cake. We were the last reservation of the night, and it felt like they couldn't wait to get us out. At the start, the waitress took the cake from us, so I assumed (like most omakase spots) they'd bring it out for us later. Instead, I had to ask for it at the end--and they handed it back still in the box. No plates, no forks, no knife. Luckily the cake came with a plastic knife and matches, so we used that and ate it with our chopsticks off the cake platter. The whole experience left a bad taste. Good food for the price (very small portions), but the service ruined the vibe.
google avatar

Parker L.

Yelp
Food - I won't go into each dish since it was 13 courses, but just know every single piece I had sent me through a cataclysmic experience that my mind has never seen before. I'm usually not a fan of ikura and uni bc I've only had low quality versions of it before. But it was so good here I honestly enjoyed eating them, which is saying a lot. Each piece was extremely fresh and had a light springy texture. My personal favorite was the chu toro. Service - tbh the service here is kinda mid. The servers don't really seem like they want to be there and the chef doesn't really talk to any of the customers. This isn't to say that the service was BAD, but I think service is held to a higher scrutiny during omakase as it's usually a more quiet, and more intimate environment. I say this because the positioning of the seats in omakase is around the bar, so it's more difficult to converse if you go in with larger parties so your option is to talk to the chef, and if the chef isn't as interactive it leads your experience quite secluded. Ambiance - typical for an omakase restaurant, modern japanese interior and their menu was really cute Overall, I'd come here if I was looking for good food, but if you're looking for an experience maybe this isn't your joint. But as I always say, taste is king and they get a 5/5 because even with the alright service the food was so insanely good I'd honestly give it a 9.5/10.

Yelp
Tsumo Omkase | 132 E 28th St, New York, NY 10016 Price: $58 pp for 13 courses What a fun experience!! I loved the interior and we were seated pretty much immediately since reservations are required. I'd recommend to book in advance as spots fill up fast! Service was so attentive and servers were hilarious continuously pouring our sake shots haha It's definitely worth the price point for omakases in New York for sure and you WILL get full. The konpachi and salmon were sooo flavorful due to the onions and shallots on top! Ikura blew my mind away since I normally find it waaay too salty but it was sweet here, never had that experience before and made this super memorable. I'm definitely going to start ordering ikura from now on just to compare it to here. Watch my entire omakase experience on TikTok: deadmochi IG: foodieleena

Yelp
Omakase in the heart of Murray Hill is kinda crazy but after seeing this place all over my social media feed a few friends and I had to check it out. This place is a steal with $48 for 11 courses it's truly unbeatable. My favorites were the madai, scallop, kanpachi, and zuke akami. The fish is incredibly fresh and I would come here time and time again for this omakase lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
My daughter raved about this place and wanted me to try it, so we went last night for an early mother's celebration. TSUMO is just as amazing as she mentioned. The decor is nice with 2 large sushi counters, enough for 35 people. The staff was excellent, her water glass and my delicious genmai tea cup were refilled throughout the evening. Simon, our omakase sushi chef was excellent! He was patient with my picture taking, and answered all of my questions about each course. All courses were delicious, from beginning to end. The fish taste so fresh and flavorful. We added 2 specials, Uni Ikura Don and Hokkaido Uni Handroll - they were heavenly. Thanks for the wonderful experience, Simon. I will be back for more!
google avatar

Katrina T.

Yelp
Tsumo was absolutely amazing for the price point. Every piece of fish was huge, juicy and tasty. The rice to fish ratio was great while the actual rice itself was not too sour or sweet, just right. I would have to say my favorite piece was the salmon and leek, it was so interesting I've never tried anything like it before. The uni was super sweet. The eel was so tender, actually a little too salty but besides that amazing. I loved the truffle piece too. Absolutely lovely. The ambience was good and seating was in a timely manner.
google avatar

Mable C.

Yelp
Came here for the lunch special - 11 courses for $48. We were seated right away at opening time 2pm. The room had only counter seating so I was able to see all the other customers that were seated at that time. We were introduced to the menu and explained each course one by one. It didn't include all the premium pieces like uni or wagyu but had a fair variety of fish. They served my favorites, which were scallop, otoro, and roasted eel. I really enjoyed all the different pairings options like yuzu, truffle, and garlic chips. Although quite small, each bite was very tasty and after 11 pieces, I actually ended up being pretty satisfied. I never felt rushed during my hour long meal and the wait staff was very attentive.
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
I went for the lunch special and it was great for the price we paid. All the pieces were really good and really worth the money considering it was half the cost of many other cheaper omakases. I loved their take on different sushi pieces. Servers were very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. Ambiance was really nice and great for a date night or even a few of your friends.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
You can't beat the price here! $58 for 13 pieces? Initial impression walking into the restaurant was that it was crowded. I've never been to such a crowded omakase spot before and also noticed that the crowd was a bit younger. Makes sense given the affordable price tag and how massive the space was. There were two counter tables and each table probably seated close to 15 people, so collectively I would assume that there were about 30 people waiting at the entrance to get seated. We each had Madai $8 yellowtail $7 botan ebi $10 Ikura $7 Scallop $7 uni $10 kanpachi $7 zuke akami $8 Chu toro $10 o toro $16 Salmon $ 8 Unagi $6 Toro handroll $10 I asked to get the uni replaced and they gave me salmon, which I thought wasn't an equivalent trade but it's chef's choice so what can you do? Either way the meal was so affordable that it was still worth it. Every piece was packed with flavor and it wasn't small. I like that they also had speciality cocktails and non alcoholic options. My favorite pieces were chutoro, madai, yellowtail and all the other tuna pieces. There was no wagyu included in the omakase and no dessert but we had toro. You an order special pieces to get the wagyu but they cost about $25 a piece. My friend ordered three special pieces and it came out to the price of another meal. The restroom was clean and the place was comfortable. I would definitely love to go back, it was a great experience!

Yelp
The fact that I'm already making excuses and reasons to come back to Tsumo and try all its partnered spots says it all. My husband took me here on a date and we were looking for a simple omakase as part of our evening in NYC. We were blown away by the flavors and how much we enjoyed for the price of the Omakase. Definitely the quality for its price was very matched if not exceeded. Top pieces we enjoyed were the chu toro, madai, yellowtail, and o toro. My husband who normally doesn't like uni even enjoyed the piece they prepared at Tsumo. All the bites were delicious, making us plot quickly which ones we were going to go for in the optional a la carte portion of the omakase seating. It's amazing how quickly 75 minutes goes but we made sure we got our top picks, and a wagyu not on the omakase, to try as well. Melts and has a truffle too? Wow. We splurged on a bottle of sake for the experience to really celebrate our love on this date. Additionally the staff was kind enough to give a small coffee ice cream with a candle since we were doing a date for my birthday (yes if you read my other reviews, my husband REALLY wanted to celebrate my birthday multiple times in multiple cities). Every bite was prepared so carefully and beautifully. They were also very good about accommodating my allergy to chives, onions, and scallions without compromising the quality. We loved chatting with our chef for the night, Ken, who has been with Tsumo since it opened a year ago. He made us feel welcomed and rounded out the full experience with his hospitality. Even if it's mostly the same pieces next time, we want there to be a next time. One of the best omakases we've ever had and we'll NEED to come back. Cheers!
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
The restaurant was extremely clean with a beautiful interior. The chef was very nice and re-explained courses if we couldn't hear him. Food was lovely! My favorite was the toro, but the uni was a bit bland.

Yelp
Luv luv luv!!! What a find! Been 2x now and is a Must every time I'm in the city! The team at Tsumo has made us feel so welcome each time. Accommodated my requests and treated us to really good food, sake and service. The sushi is excellent! The Chefs are all very professional and dedicated to their Craft. They keep the ball rolling since it's a decent size tasting menu and we need time after that to indulge in extras!! ;) There are 2 seatings a night (I believe) and it's a communal atmosphere which makes it casual and fun. For the very nominal price, we feel it is a great experience and my guests have all been very happy. Wish we had one in Boston!! Hint hint... :) Arigato, Erica DeMarco

Yelp
Amazing quality sushi. This omakase was more than my money's worth. I wish I had enough room to order the uni wagyu at the end but I was so full. Amazing service it was fun to watch each piece being made and then described to us. Very friendly sushi chef. Very comfortable seating and nice ambiance. I would love to come back again.

Yelp
You can't beat a $58 pp, 13 course omakase in New York! The price is amazing for the fresh and great quality sushi you get. They also have a la carte options in case you want to try things off the omakase menu. I definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Tsumo Omakase in Kips Bay, NYC Wanted to gatekeep this place but it's too good to not share $48 for 11 courses (lunch), $58 for 13 courses (dinner). Make a resy (s/o to Josh)!!! But everything was sooo good for its value Instagram - @joangela.eats

Yelp
Amazing quality and service! Overall such a bang for your buck. The service here was amazing, from the start of checking in to checking out. The chef really takes their time to explain every single piece. This felt more like a quick spot for quality bites rather than the usual take your time and enjoy omakase experience. Though it went by pretty quick, you never feel like you're rushed. We even opted for some a la carte pieces after and they still let you enjoy and take your time with it. Overall, definitely visit!

Yelp
Super affordable omakase - $58 for 13 courses! Multiple time slots for lunch or dinner and a small waiting area in the front - make sure you show up a little early. Very spacious and aesthetic inside. Bar/counter seating. Love how there is a menu (with pictures!) for reference during the experience so you know what you're getting. Fish tasted super fresh and all the pieces were very creative. Each one had a different topping/finisher (i.e fried onions, truffles, caviar, yuzu) which made this restaurant stick out from other omakase spots we've tried. The timing of the experience was great - you weren't rushed to finish and you weren't sitting waiting too long and getting hungry. There was a great variety as well over 13 courses, You can also order a la carte at the end. I would totally come back as this is a fresh sushi spot for an affordable price!

Leslie L.

Yelp
The service was awful. We were rushed out by the staff even though it was only five minutes past closing time and we were the last reservation. I brought a cake to celebrate my friend's birthday, and if they had provided basic utensils--plates, forks, or a knife--we would've been able to leave much sooner. Instead, we had to eat the cake straight off the platter using chopsticks, which made everything unnecessarily difficult. When we asked for utensils, they said no they "do not have." The food was okay for the price. Portions were extremely small and the rice kept falling apart. Omakase should be about both the food and the overall experience, and unfortunately, the service completely ruined ours.

Yelp
Saw this place on an influencer's reel and decided to try cuz it seemed like a great deal. Absolutely glad I did! I came for lunch last week. Made a super last minute reservation with no trouble. Upon arrival, there's a small waiting area at the entrance. You wait for someone to check you in and they'll seat you when it's time. The sushi chef assigned to the group of 4 diners I was in was very friendly. He asked if anyone in the group had allergies. I informed him of my caviar allergy. He prepared all our courses seamlessly and efficiently. He substituted the two pieces that had ikura and caviar with other toppings for me. My only gripe was one of the pieces had a decent amount of caviar and my substitution did not seem equal to that value. Other than that, everything was good. After the last course, he asked if we wanted to order any a la carte items. I ordered the uni. It was solid. It was 11 pcs for $48. The a la carte uni was $10. All in all, an excellent value. The service from wait staff was not good. All they really had to do is take drink orders and make sure they keep your water/tea filled. They were not attentive at all. They were just congregating in a corner chatting rather than doing their jobs. Had to ask for my refills. They could definitely improve on that.

Yelp
My favorite pieces from the course at @tsumonyc are the chu toro and o toro pieces as the tuna fat were flavorful and tender. Overall it's about what I expected for a budget omakase sushi, but the experience would have been so much better if the shari rice were properly prepared instead of being too hot and sticky that they completely overpowered the flavors of the seafood.

Yelp
I love this place. I believe I've been here about 3 times now since summer '24 (since hearing about it) and I've been a fan since. First off, delicious and high quality fish... for a fraction of the price for omakase. And I've had great service every time I've dined here. Most recently had the sweetest chef who made an effort to chat with my mom (visiting from CA) and I! I also love the the layout of this restaurant-- clean, sleek, easy to maneuver around. Great use of space.

Yelp
Visit date: December 2024 All bar seats - everyone gets to watch them prepare the sushi. Sushi rice was perfectly textured and seasoned lightly. Great value for $58 omakase Madai - loved the texture of this fish and the quick flame over it. Yellowtail - standard Botan ebi - shrimp was very fresh and wasabi gave it a nice kick Ikura - surprisingly sweet and did not taste salty at all Scallop - wasabi was a bit too overpowering on this one, but scallop was very soft Uni - creamy and oceany, taste lingers in mouth Kanpachi with crispy onion - fish was chewy Zuke akami with radish - fish melts in mouth and it reminded me of mashed potatoes Chu toro with black truffle - black truffle was thick and gave the Chu toro an earthy flavor. Fish was a generous portion and had good texture O toro with caviar - fish was seared and topped off with caviar! Full of umami, easily my favorite bite. Had to get another piece Salmon with fried leeks - standard, leeks gave it a nice hint of sweetness Unagi - eel was torched, seaweed could be toasted more

Yelp
Service: 4.5/5 Food: 4.4/5 Most omakase places are roughly the same. Same fish selection, same toppings, maybe some variability in the freshness. I found Tsumo chefs actually had SOME creativity to their pieces. Practically dead for the early seating on a Thursday night. Also, my eating partner bonded with our chef, because they both speak mandarin haha. We also made friends with the couple sitting next to us. Fav pieces: - ikura: usually I don't like this piece, but this one wasn't salty AT ALL - kanpachi: love the fried garlic topping - salmon: love the fried leek topping - eel hand roll: eating partner's favorite

Yelp
Amazing value, high quality fish, would definitely recommend for an omakase in NYC! 13 courses for $58 was one of the best deals we found while searching for omakases. No apps or desserts, just nigiri, and all were great. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned, we could smell the vinegar from the moment we stepped in. The fish were all high quality, uniquely delicious pieces. I appreciate how they included a lot of premium cuts in the omakase like uni, eel, chu-toro with truffle, and o-toro with caviar - these were all super good! After you finish the 13 courses you have the option to order additional add ons, some from the tasting and other options too. It's a nice, but not stuffy vibe. They actually seat a decent amount of people at once so there's a buzz in the dining room. Servers were attentive, chef was very nice, although I did have a hard time hearing him explain the pieces. Overall it's a, relatively, very accessible omakase!

Yelp
Managed to snag a last-minute reservation 2 days prior for this incredibly affordable and fast omakase! 13-course omakase, 90 minutes, $58 per person - an amazing deal considering the quality and variety offered. While you can order additional a la carte items at the end, we found the omakase itself to be perfectly satisfying. Though the fish is pre-sliced, each piece still tasted fresh, and the chefs took care with every detail. They do incorporate some interesting toppings, though I sometimes felt that the sushi shone best when left simple. My favorites were the madai and o-toro with caviar. The space is large, with multiple sushi chefs, all of whom were friendly and engaging. It was a bit packed, but the casual vibe made it feel lively rather than overwhelming. MUST make reservations and arrive on time or even a bit early, as they have a strict 5-minute grace period before offering your spot to walk-ins.

Yelp
An extremely affordable omakase option with a decent selection and quality of nigiri pieces. The pieces are pretty basic but classic - they do not add much pizzaz to each piece like you'd see in other omakase place. But they still had uni, toro and scallop, which hit the spot! The Ikura, which i am usually pretty wary of was also not fishy at all. Service was attentive, but the chefs keep it pretty fast paced because they have seatings every 90 minutes and are adamant about staying on schedule. The pieces could have been a teeny bit bigger, but I still left pretty satisfied. Overall, tsumo is a great option if you're looking for a casual omakase that won't break the bank.

Yelp
Fresh, yummy flavors, efficient dining and affordable. There are so many more omakase spots opening up around nyc but I would definitely come back to Tsumo. The chefs were friendly and the pieces were prepared with a lot of detail. My friends and I also liked how spacious the seating was but still intimate. My personal favorites were: the madai, scallop, yellowtail and salmon.

Yelp
This is a no fuss, casual but very delicious omakase. For the price of $58, you really can't complain about what you get here. You get 13 pieces including pieces of uni, chu toro and otoro. At the end of the meal, you have the option to order additional pieces. I opted for the $25 wagyu and uni hand roll. I'd probably skip this the next time but I have no regrets. I left the place feeling full. Would definitely come back. I think you do need a reservation before coming!

Yelp
Overall, I would give this place a 3.2/5. Most of the pieces were delicious but not as fresh as I would've like it to be. I especially enjoyed the amberjack, shrimp, and uni. The scallop and salmon however was not as good as others I've tried. I also like to eat the pieces with my hands but the rice fell apart more easily. Another downside is that this omakase place is definitely not a quiet, intimate place and accommodates a lot of people. It was disappointing how quickly they served each piece because we were done with the meal in less than 45 minutes. We felt rushed in that sense and wished the service was slower. Other than that, the service was good and the selection of sake that they had was also nice. The chef was kind but not as friendly as other omakase places I've been to. I think it's worth the price but I'd rather pay a bit more for better service and quality of food.
