I'm not going to lie... I came here with pretty low expectations expecting it to be some sort of novelty restaurant -- I mean what is a pizza cone anyway?
In fact, I thought I'd outsmart the system and stay away from the cones altogether, especially after noticing most of the complaints I read about were about the "hard cones".
But low and behold, what is sitting there with my wedge salad? A cone!!
I'm not sure which reaction came first, my surprise in seeing a cone when I tried so hard to avoid them. Or my puzzlement in the fact that I paid $7.99 for a Caesar wedge salad and it came out looking like a 1/4 head of lettuce with a side of jar dressing. I thought to myself... I could buy a whole head of lettuce for a buck fifty and they're charging me 8 bucks for this? Not even any bacon bits?
But then I tried it...
First the cone. It was warm and chewy with a nice crunch on the outer edge. The sour level of the sourdough was legit. I'm from the Bay Area, so I know my sourdough and this is good sourdough! So much so that I had to give my compliments to the owner, and ask him if there's a way to buy bread from them and why don't they make some killer sandwiches?
In all fairness to the aforementioned complaints, when I tried the cone again later on, maybe 15-20 mins later, it was pretty tough to chew. Gotta be objective here. So if you order a cone you gotta eat it while it's fresh out of the oven.
Onto the boring (so I thought) salad. But the dressing on this salad wasn't what I was expecting! It wasn't a jar sauce at all overrun with jarred garlic flavor. It was bright and fresh and citrusy and danced on your tongue.
Next we tried the wings, with buffalo sauce on the side. What I told my son after I tried them was "these wings are elite". How often do you pair the word "elite" with wings? Exactly. Never.
They were so hot and fresh, and the fry was to a masterfully crisp. To take it one step further, they gave it some edge by adding just the slightest dusting of corn starch (I think it was, or maybe potato starch), but whatever starch it was, just gave it that next level crispness but without heavy batter. I tell you.... elite.
I might have to get those for Super Bowl no joke.
The pizza didn't really get a fair shake from me, because I was sort of full by then. I ate two squares and raised the white flag. It was very good, but the wings and salad impressed me so much, it was hard to follow that act.
So I walked in a skeptic and walked out a fan. Can't wait to try more items next time and of course... more wings!
